Two decades ago, V3 Magazine released its first issue.

That’s a surreal sentence to write for this middle-aged man. It’s an achievement that evokes a lot of emotion for me, so while I usually keep this segment brief, I’m going to stretch my legs and stay a while this month.

These last twenty years have seen a lot come to pass, and I have these little notes I write each month chronicling my journey. In that time, I’ve gotten married, been divorced, seen two of my three children finish high school, one finish college and find myself wishing there was a way to slow down the clock on my 10-year-old's race to follow them out the door.

My personal journey is tied to this company that I was initially pulled into by two of my best friends, Anthony O W N E R & C E O Ian Griffin Barba and Neal Howard. I was engaged at the time and home visiting Rome while living in Charleston, South Carolina. I got their cocktail napkin pitch while sitting at the Waterfront Grill and Bar. I was looking to come back to Georgia and actively looking for jobs in Atlanta, but those two sold me starting a magazine, and 6 months later, I was back in Rome.

That was December 2005.

6 months later, we put out our first issue. All three of us had writing experience, Anthony had business experience and Neal had the vision for the magazine. I was good at talking to people, so I handled sales/marketing. Neal handled editing and layout under the tutelage of the late Robert Weed (whom we would have never finished issue 1 without), Anthony handled the books, helped me with marketing and knew everyone in town, so he connected the dots to say the least. We collectively dreamed up the content and found ourselves wearing more hats than we ever intended to while we worked ourselves stupid. It was a project of passion and that passion helped us survive those first few years.

Both those gentlemen moved on to other ventures, but I love them dearly and am lucky to still call them friends. We willed this monthly magazine into existence together, and I am forever grateful that they invited me to be a part of it. It wouldn’t exist without them.

During that time, Jeff Miller became our sales manager and charmed everyone he met, while spearheading our first Atlanta Steeplechase Tent Party. If you know, you know. They were the best time on the turn and brought new meaning to the phrase “I haven’t seen a horse all day”.

Jeff made connections with advertisers that are still with us today. He had 100 ideas a day and at least one of them was a winner. He is another dear friend and while his time with V3 was relatively short, his impact has endured.

I was then lucky enough to have Chris Forino hop on board the V3 train and help take the company to new heights. Chris started with sales, but his energy and versatility were just what V3 needed when it needed it most. He has been a partner for almost a decade, and I appreciate his hard work and friendship so much.

It's been a steady trend that the right people would find their way to V3 at the right time so when a young lady from Summerville, Georgia named Shadae Yancey walked in my office and wanted to sell ads, I trusted the process and said what the heck. While I didn’t know what to make of her at first, she was a beast on the sales trail and an advocate for V3 everywhere she went during her time with us and even after she moved on to her own ventures. Our creative energy opened a lot of life-changing doors...to say the least, she was a game-changer.

Again, as time went on, when we needed them most, the right people walked through the door looking for an opportunity. Graphic Designers, Robert Weed, Brittany Howes, Ellie Borromeo, Laura Allshouse, Elizabeth Childers and Katelyn Roman have all found ways to establish our style, move it forward and keep it relevant over the years. From our events to the issues, their creativity has fueled our success.

As talented as they all are, their design work and layout wouldn’t have shined as bright without great photos and while the contributing list is too long to run down, Sabrina Wilson, Derek Bell, Cameron Flaisch, Andy Calvert and Ivan Felipe have all left their mark on V3 and help tell the stories we print with their outstanding work.

Then there are the writers and the editors that managed them. I’d need two more pages to list all the writers, so I’ll stick to the editors. After Neal moved on, Tannika King helped us through a transitional period before Oliver Robbins took the reins and later Paul Moses moved into the role. They are all wonderful people and while I appreciated their grammatical abilities, I admired their ability to nurture up-and-coming writers the most.

They were great teachers, with an abundance of creativity, patience, and compassion. They loved telling the stories of NWGA and it showed in our finished product.

Our columnists are a whole different group of characters. The late Bryant Steele’s Cents and Sensibility column always ruffled feathers, but were hard to shoot holes in, Holly Lynch always has her finger on the pulse of Trends and Traditions, Marc Surovic’s quick wit and thick sarcasm are guaranteed to make you think so hard you’ll laugh, and Nina Lovel’s passion for life and adventure are always felt through her words on the page.

All of them, larger-than-life personalities and all of them a huge part of V3’s success.

That leaves two other groups to thank for these last 20 years...our advertisers and our readers.

We couldn’t keep the lights on or print these pages without the investment our advertisers and clients have made and continue to make with us. Those investments allow us to tell the stories of the people, places and things that make our region thrive, and that is something all the people mentioned or alluded to above took ownership in. That ownership shined through in all aspects of the stories printed in each issue of V3.

We’ve been far from perfect, but it was never from a lack of effort or intent to deliver content that was true to its subjects and enjoyable to those taking the time to read.

For me, it's been a wild ride and an absolute blessing to be a part of. I couldn’t name all the names, but please know I appreciate every photographer, designer, writer, sales rep, delivery driver, advertiser, reader or supporter of any kind more than words. Thank you all for a beautiful 20 years.

The Forgotten History of V3 Magazine This month, Rome, GA’s most unqualified investigative journalist sits down with Owner and CEO Ian Griffin to discuss V3’s legacy and impact on our community. Guaranteed to contain 30% facts and 70% shenanigans.

MARK: “Congratulations on 20 years of V3 Magazine. Tell us a little bit about how it all got started.”

IAN: “No.” [From the look on his face, he immediately regrets this interview.]

IAN: “The company started with four guys having a vision for telling the stories of Northwest Georgia in a professional way.

In the beginning, it was Chris Forino, Neal Howard, Anthony Barba, and me. Anthony and Neal aren’t with us anymore.”

MARK: “What is the motto for the 20th anniversary?

MARK: “I assume the phrase ‘aren’t with us anymore’ means that both Anthony and Neal are dead, and at some point, you fought each other with swords, and whoever was left standing absorbed the powers of the previous co-founders, like in a small business version of the 80s movie The Highlander. Is that what happened?”

IAN: “Next year, the magazine can legally drink alcohol.”

MARK: “Now that the magazine is 20 years old, are you worried that actor Leonardo DiCaprio may try to date it?”

IAN: [awkward pause]. “Yes.” MARK: “Have you considered adding a fourth V? My suggestions would be Vanquished, Vociferous, Ventricular, or Xylophone.”

Mark Suroviec, M.Ed., is the Chief Ambassador of Fun at WorkPlay Solutions, the author of Forever Sisters, and the Vice President of the Children’s Museum of Rome. He hopes you pity laugh at his humor and satire stories, especially the ones that aren’t funny.

2. What is the origin of the three Vs? Where did they come from?

A) In 2005, the West Rome Sam’s Club had a closeout special on the letter V. Ian and Chris filled an F350 Super Duty with the remaining supply. Only three of those original 256 Vs survived to modern times.

B) Julius Caesar said, “Veni, Vidi, Vici,” after quickly defeating Gannondorf in the Battle of Zelda. The Latin phrase means “I came, I saw, I conquered.”

Historians also believe the statement is a thinly veiled reference to the invention of Caesar salads.

C) “Vicky the Voluptuous Velociraptor” was a disturbing cartoon mascot of the original magazine. After pressure from advertisers, the character was discontinued in 2011 to make the magazine more family-friendly. However, the editors still sneak a reference to the bikini-clad dinosaur mascot into the magazine every month. (Hint: Read closely between pages 3 and 37) D) After the internet stock bubble collapsed in 2001, Ian snagged the website prefix “vvv.readv3.com” for pennies on the dollar.

IAN: “Xylophone begins with an X.”

A) May 2022 — V3 employees were extras in Season 4 of Stranger Things.

The studio’s NDA agreement prevented staff from using phones and computers to avoid spoilers.

MARK: “The letter X is just one V standing on the back of another V in The Upside Down. You know, the alternate dimension in the Stranger Things documentary.”

B) February 1991 — The Great Blizzard of ’91 single-handedly stopped the print edition from being delivered due to unsafe road conditions. Also, Ian and Chris were still in kindergarten.

IAN: “Documentary?”

C) April 2020 — Covid19 Pandemic. Apparently, you shouldn’t personally lick each postage stamp before mailing the magazine to subscribers.

MARK: “Moving on. Who were some of your favorite interviews for the magazine?”

IAN: “I’m a big sports guy, so interviewing Darlington grad and college football coach Will Muschamp was a dream. Especially when he was the coach of my favorite team, the Florida Gators, I’ll probably get some hate mail for that.”

MARK: “You will. Does Will still hold the Darlington School record?”

IAN: “What record?”

MARK: “The most Mus’s in a season. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be the Champ.”

Rehabilitation is one of the most daunting procedures to undertake. The stress involved in these treatments has prompted AdventHealth Redmond’s Sports Med and Rehab team to make the extra effort to design a “highly specialized, one-on-one, compassionate” plan of care for each patient.

AdventHealth’s primary goal is whole-person centered care, so directory of rehabilitation for AdventHealth Redmond John Crowley, and Jay Martin the manager of outpatient rehabilitation,

ensure that each part of the process starts and ends with the patient.

“When our team takes the time to get to know someone, what is important to them becomes important to us and that shapes their rehab experience,” says Crowley.

Understanding the patient’s goals, needs, and concerns helps them shape a personalized treatment plan. Each appointment is scheduled for a full hour so the practitioner can give all their focus to the patient they are with. Their work goes beyond

the typical treatment, though. While the primary goal of care is always effective rehabilitation, it’s the social, emotional, and communal aspects that define it.

“Listening to your patient can take you a long way,” says Martin. “You spend time with them… I feel like it’s kind of an easy thing to do.”

Even beyond general care and connection, they are always looking for ways to improve patients’ treatments.

Sports Med and Rehab currently offers a variety of rehabilitative services, from the basics of physical, occupational, and speech therapy to more specialized treatments for pelvic floor disorders, cancer, strokes, and Parkinson’s, with a program “that includes one on one rehab, group exercise classes, and community outings,” says Crowley.

And whatever gaps they find in their care, they quickly seek coverage for. Their practitioners regularly update their certifications to offer a wider variety of specialized treatments. These certifications also help them determine which practitioners are

most equipped to help each patient.

“We’re in the middle of a huge growth wave for building our Primary Care network,” said Martin.

AdventHealth has an amazing culture of connected care that supports patients on multiple fronts, with the practitioners best equipped to aid them.

In the same day you sustain an injury, you could speak with your general practitioner and be connected to a specialist. Their documentation system also allows them to retain medical notes from other members of staff, giving patients the extra assurance that everyone on their team has the same understanding of their condition.

“One of our service standards is ‘make it easy,’” says Martin. “Make it easy for our employees, make it easy for our patients.”

Sports Med and Rehab has always been eager to find new ways they can help their patients.

Before AdventHealth Redmond was established, they were already offering rehabilitative care to the larger Floyd County area. Crowley, Martin, and their

team of practitioners set a personal standard of patient-centered care, out of love for the practice and the community.

Jay Martin first became interested in physical therapy after tearing an ACL in a college flag football game. He’d been playing sports since middle school and sustained a few injuries over the years, but this experience made him realize he wanted to help people in the same way his medical team helped him.

He joined Sports Med and Rehab in 2013, where he began working with Crowley.

Crowley had a similar passion for the field of physical therapy as a practitioner, but when the offer to become director came, he wasn’t sure if it was the right fit for him.

“At first, I wasn’t sure if this was consistent with my calling but God showed me that by growing rehab services both in terms of services offered and quality, and by supporting our rehab teams I can have an even bigger impact on our community and fulfill my calling in this way.”

Have you ever learned a new concept, only to have it suddenly appear everywhere around you? It’s not actually materializing more often; you’re just noticing it more, because your brain considers it novel and important and thus brings it to the forefront of your awareness. This is called a “frequency illusion”, and a couple of these have been bugging me lately: double negatives and couth.

It started when a friend shared that at a recent high-end corporate dinner event, one of her table-mates had returned from the high-end corporate Italian buffet, plate piled high with a lovely assortment of pasta. Rather than savoring each dish on its own, he proceeded to stir the servings all together, resulting in a sort of reddish-green noodle casserole that he then consumed with gusto.

Another friend relayed an infraction from a similar large event; this one, wardrobe-related.

Apparently, one of the organizers had had a bad-foot day, because she hosted the entire evening in her bare feet. Not only did this include her time at the dining table; she had even gone onstage to adjust a microphone.

Barefoot. So much for upscale professional attire.

I clasped my pearls. “Who does this? Were these people raised in a barn?”

The first friend, one who accepts all people as they are, just said, “I don’t know where they got it, but as my father would have said, “they were not without a lack of couth.”

My brain asked me for a moment. Not without a lack. Was this a triplenegative, piled on top of all that pasta? I have to take pause on a plain double one; this was going to be hard.

I diagrammed it in my head. “Not without” was a double-negative where the words canceled each other out, so that meant “with”. They had a lack of couth. They had no couth. What on earth was couth? Was it the opposite of “uncouth”, a favorite of my mother’s? Turns out, it is, and uncouth actually came first.

I thought of my mom, who sometimes said with disdain, “he is just so uncouth.” The activity prompting this observation could have ranged from wearing blue jeans to church to saying “yeah” instead of “yes, ma’am”, to talking with their mouth full. And Mother wasn’t a snob; she was a smart girl from the country who had embraced the niceties of the world. But she had never said couth. I mean, have you ever heard anyone say, “Oh, she is just so couth!”? Me neither.

Couth is a derivative of uncouth. Uncouth came first (rude, unrefined, socially unacceptable) and when someone thought it needed an opposite, couth was born. Google calls it a “back-formation”, which is interesting, but way beyond the scope of this column: I’m busy talking about tacky people right now.

Lest you consider me judgmental (I wouldn’t disagree), I credit the voice of my mom that taught me to frown on dinner-blending and barefoothostessing.

It took my loved and loving mother twenty-eight years of energy and patience to make sure I was Raised Right. She would have welcomed more time for this task, but God called her home way too soon. I did not always absorb her coaching with grace; she had to annoy me with it often, and trust me, it worked.

I was an outdoor-tree-climbing-bike-riding kid, not the tea-party-dressup type. My friends wanted Barbie and Ken to be boyfriend and girlfriend; I considered them simply good friends who enjoyed bouncing down the staircase at Five Mimosa Drive together in their orange Barbie and Ken Doll Hot Rod Sports Car. Over and over, and over again, I launched that Austin Healy down those stairs, and in a testament to the quality of Maplewood construction and Mattel manufacturing, no dolls, cars or walls suffered visible damage.

It was the sixties; girls hadn’t gone casual yet. Barbie’s tennis outfit was the most adventure-worthy outfit she had, and I dressed in wrap-around skirts.

Tomboy that I was, my style was to plop down into a chair without worrying about my ankles.

Why should I worry about my ankles, you ask? Because I kept forgetting to cross my legs at the ankles like a young lady with manners was supposed to.

Not at the knees, mind you: that was for boys, and it wasn’t becoming of a girl in a wrap-around skirt. To my long-suffering mother’s credit, it eventually became easier to cross at the ankles than to hear her constant reminders, so mom’s win at the time became my own as I proceeded through life, knowing how to sit down without being offensive.

Other appendages required my mother’s attention as well: my elbows just could not stay off the table at mealtime. If I heard “Nina Nina, well and able, take your elbows off the table! This is not a horse’s stable but a well-groomed dining table!” once, I heard it a million times. It would have been easier on all of us had I been an obey-in-advance kind of kid, but at least it got to where Mom only had to say “Nina Nina”, and down those elbows would go.

Other childhood indiscretions were easier for Mom to calibrate. It didn’t take but a few corrections to make sure I closed my mouth when chewing, swallowed quietly (who knew that was a thing?), and didn’t talk with my mouth full of food. Whether from nature or nurture, I have always found these behaviors offensive, and you can be sure that I passed appropriate mastication manners on to my own young ‘uns. They learned quickly too, with one exception: If a child ever asks you if you like seafood, the right answer is a very fast “NO!!!” You need to get this out quickly, before they open their stuffed little mouth so you can SEE their food. This thing is absolutely

kid-hilarious; I’ve never met one that didn’t embrace it with gusto. To the wise: if your child has never done this, don’t leave this magazine lying around where they’ll find it.

That was a tough one. I couldn’t nag it out of them; they had to outgrow it on their own, and I’m not sure it’s completely gone from the Lovel family tree. Some things you just don’t ask.

I say all these things with gratitude. For the countless times my mom made sure I had social graces and grammar (a whole ‘nother column for a whole ‘nother day), for both of my parents who brought me into this life of privilege, and for all of the caring people in my life who guided me to who I am, thank you. I love you all.

Do munching misbehaviors steal your appetite, or are you more tolerant than I? The next time you’re with a mixologist, a barefoot contessa, or someone who ensures you get to see (and hear) their food, just remember: these people are not without a lack of couth.

Sherwood Road is the perfect home for making memories. This classic cottage is built to be remembered. With its timeless beauty and charming versatility, any kind of person could see themselves here.

Located in the historic College Heights neighborhood, this lovely English country cottage combines an antique design with all the conveniences of a modern home. It offers a main home with 4 beds and 3 and a half baths, and a carriage house with one bed and one bath.

The first floor of the main house “includes a huge-yet-somehowstill-cozy, two-story great room” featuring high ceilings and gorgeous hardwood floors spanning the whole of the main and upper floor, and a wood burning fireplace.

Branching off of the great room is the dining room, which offers a lovely view of the backyard through the “four-sectioned, diamond-paned window.” And the kitchen is perfect for those who love to cook or bake. It has plenty of cabinet and open-pantry space, a center island with a gas cooktop and range hood, a double oven, a beverage fridge, and a staircase leading to the second floor.

For the bookworms, this main floor also includes a “sunroom/den with built-in bookcases and wet bar.” Lastly, it features the luxurious main bedroom and en-suite bath, which offers a double vanity, walk-in closet, separate shower and soaking tub.

A beautiful staircase lined with antique tapestries leads to the great room balcony and the second floor.

From here, visitors can more closely admire the house’s exquisite woodwork, including its decorative carvings, beamed ceilings, and crown moldings. This level also features three bedrooms, “two full baths, an office/study, and laundry room.”

The guest house is very flexible. Inside are a living space with a closet, a full bath, and a loft with a kitchen and a bedroom/living space.

It offers guests plenty of space, and could be used for extra storage.

In front of the main entrance is a beautiful rock wall and circular walkway. The yard,

Originally built in 1920 based on a design

by Robert Smith Pringle—the architect behind Atlanta's Cathedral of St. Philip, Darlington’s Old Main/Wilcox Hall, and the Fulton National Bank—this home carries the elegance and warmth signature to his style. Pringle designed many private residences, but 205 Sherwood Road is one of the only seven in Rome.

The current owners, the Harrises, have further enhanced the home's aesthetic by adding historically inspired pieces that lend to the house's existing style, such as an iron chandelier hanging in the great room, tapestries lining the stairwell leading to the balcony, and a recently recreated composite slate roof inspired by its previous World-War-II-era roof.

They've also maintained several of the house’s more historical features. A coal burning furnace sits in the upper level, and an iron shoot runs along the exterior, designed to store coal and run it back inside. While modern appliances have been incorporated, these pieces serve as mementos of the house’s history.

205 Sherwood Road is a natural conversation starter. The beauty, the history, and the space make it the perfect place for guests and gatherings of all kinds.

There have only been 4 owners of the house in its 106 year history. Jack Harris, the current owner, recalled the many Christmas parties his family held at 205, each with increasingly taller and more specially-structured trees standing in the center of the great room.

“The house flowed very well,” he said. No matter how many people there were, it was easy to make space for everyone.

Whether you prefer hosting or relaxing, though, 205 Sherwood Rd is a piece of history you can call your own.

“College Heights neighborhood is a wonderful neighborhood… It’s a great walking neighborhood. Neighbors are extremely friendly,” said Jack. “So I'm just glad that our family got to be a part of that history.”
