As members of Wyoming’s land-grant university, we offer an innovative, diverse, and challenging curriculum to prepare graduates for a life in music that reflects 21st century opportunities. { Bands at UW } Wind Symphony is our premiere concert band featuring the most proficient woodwind, brass and percussion musicians on the UW campus. Membership is by audition only. Symphonic Band is open to all students, performing the finest in large wind-band repertoire Community Concert Band welcomes all area residents for musical enjoyment, provides the opportunity of UW musicians to play on secondary instruments, and offers advanced conducting students an opportunity to conduct. Western Thunder Marching Band has traveled to several bowl games including the Famous Potato Bowl, Sun Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Holiday Bowl, Copper Bowl, and New Mexico Bowl. The band travels regularly to Mountain West Conference and nonconference football games.
{ Orchestras at UW } Symphony Orchestra has been honored nationally with an ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award from the League of American Orchestras and being selected for the Ford Made in America project. Works played include The Firebird, Pictures at an Exhibition, the complete Rome trilogy of Respighi, Scheherazade, symphonies by Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Dvorak, Sibelius, Beethoven and more. They have collaborated in works such as Carmina Burana, the Brahms Requiem, the complete Nutcracker Ballet, and operas such as Don Pasquale and Cosi fan tutti. Chamber Orchestra specializes in orchestral works for smaller forces. Symphonies by Schubert, Haydn, and Mozart, Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, the Purcell Opera Dido and Aeneas and Handel’s Water Music are but a sampling of their repertoire. These musicians can often be found accompanying UW’s choral ensembles, opera productions, and Broadway musicals as well. DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC » 5
{ Keyboards at UW } Performing opportunities for our keyboardists include: » Solo recitals, chamber music, and performing as a collaborative pianist with other soloists or vocal ensembles; » Playing piano, organ, or harpsichord as a member of an orchestra, band, or jazz group; » Competing to appear as a concerto soloist with the UW Symphony Orchestra in the biennial Dorothy Jacoby Honors competition.

The Music Department is housed in the newly expanded and renovated Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts, which includes studios, practice rooms, a beautiful 700-seat concert hall, a stunning 100 seat recital hall, rehearsal halls, classrooms, recording studios, and more.

Our Music Department is an international crossroads, with students from around the world studying along with students from Wyoming and across the US. Outstanding students from Europe, Asia, the Far East, and South America are part of our musical family.
World renowned guest artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Pinchas Zukerman, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Marilyn Horne have been part of UW’s guest artist series. Guests frequently offer master classes for UW students or perform with UW student ensembles, through the cooperation of the UW Presents office.

{ Jazz at UW } » Jazz Studies offers a full curriculum of academic jazz courses. » Hosts renowned artists that have included: Greg Osby, Joel Frahm, Adam Nussbaum, Terell Stafford, and Brian Lynch. » Features many outstanding performing groups including three big bands, multiple combos, as well as studio orchestra performance opportunities. » The Wyoming Jazz Ensemble, UW’s premier big band regularly performs in the region and has performed in New York City as well as Jazz Education Network Conference. » A Jazz Emphasis is offered for students wanting to focus on jazz while studying at UW. » The UW Jazz Festival is an educational festival that provides excellent music with a positive educational experience. { Chamber Music at UW } Vital to any music program, chamber music fulfills an important learning experience for all music students. Students may participate in many ensembles including: string quartets, piano trios, percussion ensemble, jazz combos, woodwind quintets, trombone ensemble, brass quintets and saxophone quartets, to list but a few.
