HOW TO FIND A JOB Job searching is time-consuming and can be overwhelming. Sometimes it can be difficult to get started when the possibilities are so numerous.

Be enthusiastic, self-confident, and persevering. You’ve got this!

1. Strategize: Break it into small, achievable goals.

Dedicate a couple of hours a week to your job search and identify your timetable. This keeps you on track and working towards your goal. Be realistic about the amount of time you are willing to commit to finding a job.

2. Narrow down your possibilities by answering the following questions honestly & identify potential opportunities by researching interesting employers.

WHO? Who do you want to work for? Who do you know in the field? Who are the other people you need to consider in your decisions?

WHAT? What size of employer appeals to you? What type of employer would you enjoy? What type of job? In what capacity do you want to work? If you don't know where to start, begin with who you WON'T work for.

WHY? Why would you take the job — future career goals, compatible work environment, opportunity for advancement, or more responsibility?

WHERE? Where do you want to live? Where do you want to start? Where do you want to go?

Where DON’T you want to live?

HOW? How will you start to look for a job? How will you identify potential employers? How will you evaluate opportunities and offers?

3. Prepare application materials.

Write your resume and a sample cover letter. *Remember you will have to adjust them to each job application.

4. Network! Connect! Engage!

Let people know you are starting the job search process. Ask them to keep a lookout for potential opportunities or contacts. Connect with companies and other professionals. Look on company websites for job postings, connect with professionals on LinkedIn or Indeed, ask for an “Informational Interview” and dedicate time looking for job openings.

5. Apply & follow up.

Tailor your resume and cover letter to each job description. Keep track of your applications and don’t be shy about following up with the company. *Remember to send a thank you note or email after the Interview.

Simply put, it is developing and maintaining professional relationships.

• Talking to your classmates or professors • Attending a student meeting or organization • Asking a professional in your field for advice about how to get your foot in the door

Elevator Pitch Prepare a few sentences to pitch yourself to people you meet. Learn more about creating an elevator pitch in SOAR! Connect and Engage Get involved in activities that interest you, form lasting and mutual relationships, offer assistance and support to others.

Be Enthusiastic and Positive in Communications Take the initiative. Present yourself well. First impressions can last a long time, and you never know where your classmates will be working in two years.

Ask questions and LISTEN actively Be bold and start a conversation. Ask open-ended questions to collect information.

Informational Interviewing Reach out to an employer to schedule an “Informational Interview” where you can ask for advice and insight from a professional. Explain that you are a student looking for recommendations and exploring career options. People are more open when they know you appreciate their expertise. Be prepared to ask questions to get the conversation rolling.

DON’T ask if they have any job openings. You are gathering information, not applying.

Learn more about informational interviewing in SOAR. Talk with Professors They have interacted with thousands of students who are now in professions. Where did some of them end up?

Ask your professor about their experience and journey.

Attend Events Search for workshops and events hosted by your college. Introduce yourself to the guest speaker. Attend conferences/ symposiums in your field.

Follow Up and Say Thank You! - You’ve made a contact; be sure to maintain it. Get their business card. Ask if they mind staying in touch with you. Smart job seekers maintain contacts with people in their field at all times, not just when they are looking for a letter of recommendation, internship, or job. Don’t take people for granted. Let them know you appreciate their time, help, and expertise. ALWAYS send a thank you.

Do you have a concentration or minor?

Stating an “Expected Graduation Date” gives the employer a clear view of your education timeline.

Highlight skills that pertain to the specific job or field of work. Listing skills and technology from the job description is important when tailoring your resume.

Location is a part of the experience.

Make sure you list city and state. If your experience was overseas make sure to list the country. Working in Paris, TX will be much different than Paris, France.

Starting your bullet points with action or skill verbs helps the employer see what you have accomplished in prior experience.

REFER to pages 20 & 21 for more examples.

If you have “Seasonal” experience you can list it by the season, dates, or (seasonal).

Be consistent with what you choose.

Section Headings will vary due to what the reader needs to know or the kind of job you are applying for.

Portfolios or websites can be listed in a separate section or alongside your contact information at the top.

APPLICANT TRACKING SYSTEMS (ATS) Formatting for ATS compatibility: 1. Tailor your resume to each job description.

2. Include a few, clearly defined sections. (make it easy for ATS to find and categorize the information)

3. Incorporate relevant, targeted keywords and phrases from the job description and common to the type of position you are applying for.

(Terminology & vocabulary particular to the profession)

What is ATS? Many companies use applicant tracking systems to streamline the hiring process. ATS scans application materials for information relevant to the position and then assigns each candidate a ranking compared to other applicants. The higher the resume ranking, the more likely the application will end up being reviewed by a human reader.

4. No images or graphics. Inclusion of any colorful graphics may be enough to “choke” some applicant tracking systems. Instead, include your LinkedIn profile address or website link.

5. Date formats: MM/YYYY or “Month Year”.

6. ATS approved fonts: Arial, Calibri, Cambria, Georgia, Times New Roman, Garamond, Verdana, Palatino, Helvetica, Tahoma

Submitting multiple resumes to the same company. Applicant tracking systems keep previous submissions. You can apply to multiple, related positions, but make sure the resume information is consistent, because the hiring manager will have access to the other versions.

Be honest. Don’t attempt to “trick” the applicant tracking system into selecting you with info that doesn’t apply to you. (Remember, the resume will eventually be reviewed by a human.)

File type. Microsoft Word (.doc and .docx) & PDF are recommended for files.

•

Check your email after applying online. Some applicant tracking systems acknowledge submissions, but these automated responses may be diverted to your spam folder.

Summary can also be referred to as an Objective or Professional Summary. If you are applying with a cover letter & resume then an objective is not needed.

This is a good place to mention a couple of skills you might want to highlight, or that are relevant to the job. This section should change for every position you apply for.

Coursework is often your most recent experience as a student or recent graduate.

Highlighting classes that are relevant to the job helps an employer see your experience in a field.

Resumes continually grow and change!

What you put on your resume as a freshman or sophomore may no longer apply towards the end of your college career. Take time to keep your resume current.

Focus on the skills you gained and how you used them. These skills may change for every position you apply to.

A Vita or a Resume? How do I choose? A vita, or CV, is typically used in academia, primarily for people with graduate and professional degrees, research, and consulting areas. Regardless, you need to make sure your most relevant qualifications appear on the first two pages.

Getting Started: As with resumes, there are widely divergent opinions about what is necessary and desirable. Consider all suggestions carefully and incorporate only those that make sense to you. Organize with the most relevant and powerful heading first, next powerful second, and so forth.

Identifying Information: List your name, phone number, and email at the top of your vita.

COVER LETTER BASICS A cover letter is an introduction to who you are and why you are applying for the job. It is your opportunity to elaborate on the skills or experience you have listed in your resume and speak of your enthusiasm for the organization. Cover letters are an important part of job applications.

How to begin — The layout of your cover letter should be professional and can be found on page 23 along with suggestions of who to address it to.

The best way to approach your letter is to think of responding to two common interview questions.

1. Why do you want to work HERE, specifically?

Research the company, show them that you are interested in what they do, and explain why you decided to apply for the position.

Hiring managers like to see that candidates have taken the time to research.

2. Why should we hire YOU, specifically?

Keep it brief and explain why you are qualified for the position, without just repeating your resume. Look at the job description and show how you have gained experience and the qualifications they are asking for. Make the connections for the reader!

Provide a little background on yourself, but not a complete biography. The employer is trying to get a quick snapshot of who you are professionally. Mention what drew you to the company, position, or program.

Talk about a weakness you have taken steps to work on such as, “I struggled with organization so I have a planner, and have seen positive improvement as I work on this weakness.”

3. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?

The employer is trying to determine if your career goals and ambitions align with the company or program. Prepare for this question by assessing your short and long-term goals and it’s okay to keep it general. At the very least, talk about the type of work you’d like to do or your leadership aspirations. “I’m excited about ... and hope to have the opportunity to ... so that I can ultimately ...”

4. Why did you leave your last position?

Bad mouthing a former boss or company will not endear you to the interviewer. If you cannot think of a good reason, simply say that you are looking for a new challenge or opportunity. Be positive, honest, factual, and confident.

5. What color/animal/superhero would you be and why?

“Fun” questions like these may pop up in an interview and throw you off. Remember there is no wrong answer in this situation. The employer wants to see how you think under pressure, how creative you are, or get to know your personality. Take a deep breath and feel free to be imaginative and funny if appropriate.

6. Why should we hire you?

This is your chance to make your final pitch. Consider what sets you apart and list the top reasons why they should choose you. Number them if you have a tendency to ramble: “The three main reasons you should hire me are....”

Typical reasons for entry level jobs are that you have the education, experience, and passion.

VIRTUAL INTERVIEWING TIPS & RECOMMENDATIONS Phone or virtual interviews are very common and are used primarily as the method of choice for the initial interview, especially if you are in a different location. Although you may be familiar with the virtual environment, here are suggestions to present yourself professionally.

•

Check (and double check) your equipment and WiFi signal - Find a location you can trust.

Libraries often have study/meeting rooms. Test it prior to the interview.

•

Environment is key - No Distractions (pets included). Background should be clean, uncluttered, and simple. Avoid bedrooms, cars, and busy locations.

•

Have good lighting - Put the window or light in front of you so it lights your face and doesn’t present a glare behind you.

•

Turn your camera ON - The position of your camera helps create a connection. The camera should be level with your head or a little higher. You don’t want to be looking down at it. When you talk, look into the camera, not at the screen.

•

Dress professionally and fully - Just cause they don’t see it doesn’t mean it won’t effect how you act or feel.

Save the sweat pants for later.

•

Have job-related materials in front of you - Resume, cover letter, job description, company info, etc. You can bring a “cheat sheet” if necessary, containing anything that could help prompt you on relevant interview questions.

•

Connect with the interviewer - Greet them when you sign on ask how their day is. Listen attentively and look into the camera for good eye contact.

•

Take notes - Write down relevant information or potential questions for the employer. Make sure you get the names of everyone who interviews you for follow up and a thank-you note.

•

Don’t be thrown off by long pauses or silence after you answer a question - The interviewers are probably just writing down your answer.

DINING ETIQUETTE Manners, Professionalism, and Etiquette are presented in social behavior and start with the consideration of others.

Employers are looking for people who will represent their company positively beyond the office.

Taking job candidates to dinner is common in the interview process, or you may find yourself at a conference or dining with a client. Dining etiquette is essential in being professional.

Basic Manners: • Turn off your cell phone before sitting at the dining table and keep it off the table.

• Follow your host’s lead. When to sit, when to place your napkin, and the price of meal to order.

• Be polite to the server.

• Wait until everyone at the table has been served before you begin eating.

• Take small bites, cutting one bite of food at a time.

• Dinner rolls can be torn one piece at a time, buttered, and eaten.

• Utensils are placed in the order of use. Work from the outside in.

• Your bread plate is on the left and your drink glass is on your right.

Use your hands to help remember b on the left, d on the right.

• When you are done eating, place your utensils at 4 o’clock.

Be mindful of: • Be aware of how you are presenting yourself. (Posture, facial expression, elbows off the table) • Avoid foul language and slang.

• Don’t monopolize the conversation. Ask questions to draw others into conversations.

• Be polite no matter what topics arise. Be a good listener even if you don’t always agree.

• Stay up to date on the news of the industry.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS Are you familiar with your rights during the interview process, or do you have an understanding of what questions might be illegal?

The Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1964 is a federal law protecting the rights of applicants and employees during the interview, hiring, and employment process. Under this Act, it’s illegal for a hiring authority to ask applicants questions about their:

• age • the presence of a disability • gender • race • height and weight • religious affiliation

• citizenship • marital status • children • sexual orientation • or medical conditions • history of drug and alcohol use

Most employers do not ask illegal questions maliciously; they’re either unaware that the questions are inappropriate or are trying to learn information they view as important. It’s helpful to have some prepared responses if these questions come up during the interview.

Here are some ideas: – How does this pertain to the job?

– Why is this information needed?

– I do not feel comfortable discussing this topic in an interview.

– I prefer not to answer that question.

From there, let your intuition guide you in determining the interviewer’s intent with the question. If your gut tells you this may not be a welcoming place to work, trust that feeling! Continue with the interview, be professional and polite.

Hopefully, they will let you know the next steps, but it is okay to ask what is next in the interview process.

Reflect Write down what you want to remember.

Note what you felt went well and where you would like to improve. Give yourself credit for being invited to an interview!

Thank-You Letter Send immediately after the interview. Thank You’s can be handwritten, or you can send an email, particularly if email is how you have previously communicated with the interviewer.

Follow Up If you have not heard back from the employer in their proposed time frame, wait one day and then reach out to them. Keep it positive and short.

“I enjoyed our conversation on (date). Would you be able to update me on your timing or any potential next steps in the interview process for (position title)?

Thank you for your time.”

Receiving a Job Offer!

Let the employer know you received the offer (if it was an email or voicemail) and thank them. If you need time to think about it ask when they need an answer and then work to notify them of your decision as soon as possible. Don’t put off informing an employer of your decision to accept or reject the offer, as it could be rescinded before you do so.

Accepting an offer only as a precautionary measure is misleading to the employer. SALARY NEGOTIATION It may be tempting to just accept a job offer without considering salary and benefits, but doing so might cost you money and result in frustration. Salary conversations can be uncomfortable; make sure you’re prepared for it by understanding some terms and resources.

Salary: Do some research on what is normally offered in your field (using the resources below), keeping in mind factors like industry standards, variations based on geographical location, cost of living, and state income tax rates.

Benefits: While salaries are sometimes set in stone, other aspects of the job can be negotiable, such as health insurance and retirement packages, student loan repayment assistance, vacation and sick days, relocation coverage, and performance bonuses.

Perks: These aspects of the job, which usually don’t have monetary value, can make a difference in terms of your quality of life and job satisfaction. Ask about a company car, business travel expectations, professional development, access to a company gym, childcare services, or office size, remote work, and flexible hours.

Negotiation Basics Assess the market (using the resources below) to become familiar with salary ranges for your job title based on location, years of experience, certifications and training, etc. Use more than one resource to get a balanced sense of a range.
