Dear UW Graduates, Faculty and Staff, Family, and Friends,

Welcome to the University of Wyoming’s 2025 Spring Commencement ceremony! Thank you for being here to celebrate one of the most significant and memorable milestones in your (or your student’s) academic journey.

To our graduates: when you began your path toward earning a degree, none of you could have fully imagined the journey ahead, the triumphs and challenges, the unexpected moments of growth, and the resilience you would develop. Along the way, you celebrated successes, overcame setbacks, forged meaningful relationships, and immersed yourselves in the rigor and thrill of academic discovery. Each of these experiences has helped shape the person you are today and has prepared you for what comes next.

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter, one only you can write. With your degree in hand, you are stepping confidently into the future. Your education, knowledge, and experiences belong solely to you and will serve as both the culmination of your time at UW and the foundation upon which you’ll build what’s next.

You are my tenth graduating class as President of the University of Wyoming, and I can say with complete sincerity that every commencement is uniquely special. The dreams, ambitions, and accomplishments we honor today are as distinct as each of you. It is my great honor to celebrate this day alongside you. I share in your joy, excitement, and—for some—your nervous anticipation of what lies ahead. I’m so glad we can be here together to recognize your achievement and share this moment with those who supported you along the way.

To the faculty, staff, family, and friends: thank you. Your support, encouragement, and belief in these graduates have played a vital role in their success. You have helped make this moment possible, and I know your continued guidance will be just as important in the future.

Graduates, today you join the ranks of our alumni as a Cowboy for life. You are now part of a global community that includes all those who have studied, taught, researched, and worked at UW. This community is strong, supportive, and ready to walk beside you in the days and years ahead. Your addition makes it even stronger.

Congratulations, Class of 2025! I am incredibly proud of you and can’t wait to see what your future holds!

Wyoming Territorial Seal

The University of Wyoming provides a transitional chapter in the history of the central Rocky Mountain frontier. In 1886, when the university was founded, the Wyoming Territory was nearly two decades old. The territorial seal is reproduced in beautiful stained glass above the west door of Old Main, the first campus building.

In the upper half of the seal, a railroad train is set against the mountains. In the lower left, a plow, a pick, a shovel, and a shepherd’s crook are depicted. An arm upholds a sword in the lower right. Above the Norman shield appears the inscription Cedant Arma Togae (let arms yield to the gown).

In 1890, when Wyoming became a state, the official state seal was adopted. Historically, the university seal bridges the territory and the state. It symbolizes educational excellence and complements the growth of the state it serves.

Alma Mater

Where the western lights’ long shadows Over boundless prairies fling And the mountain winds are vocal

With thy dear name, Wyoming. There it is the Brown and Yellow Floats in loving loyalty, And the College throws its portals Open wide to all men free.

Refrain

And so our songs we bring. Our Alma Mater sing, To her our hearts shall cling, Shall cling forever more.

Yonder we can see it standing, Circled by the purple hills, While the flaming fire of sunset Every western window fills; ’Tis the College! Ah, we know it!

Shrine of many joys and tears, And the rays that light upon it Are prophetic of its years.

UW

of English and Philosophy (1905) First woman in the United States to head an academic department (1915)

Ragtime Cowboy Joe

He always sings raggy music to the cattle as he swings Back and forward in the saddle on a horse (a pretty good horse!)

He’s got a syncopated gaiter And you ought to hear the meter to the roar of his repeater How they run (yes run!)

When they hear that he’s ‘a-comin’, Cause the western folks all know, He’s a high-falootin’, rootin, tootin’

Son of a gun from ol’ Wyoming Ragtime Cowboy, (talk about your cowboy), Ragtime Cowboy Joe.

Fight, Wyoming, Fight

Come on, Cowboys, gold and brown!

Show them how, boys, hold them down! Start right now, boys, don’t delay, Break away, win today. Take that ball, and one, two, three!

Carry on triumphantly—Come on and fight! Fight! Fight, you Cowboys, fight! Come on and fight to victory!

Academic Regalia

LAcademic regalia originated in the oldest European universities. Many of these institutions continue to show great diversity in their academic dress. In contrast, American colleges and universities adopted a uniform dress code with the following descriptions:

Processional —Doctoral candidates precede master’s degree candidates. Marching order of the faculty is according to academic rank and tenure.

Mace Borne in UW processionals by the marshal, the mace is symbolic of the president’s leadership and authority. The short, club-like staff of gleaming metal originated in medieval England. High-ranking officials were accompanied by bodyguards who held the formidable weapon ready to protect the dignitary. The UW mace is crowned with a cap of flames, signifying knowledge and enlightenment.

Gowns The gown for the bachelor’s degree is worn closed; it has pointed sleeves. The gown for the master’s degree may be worn open or closed; it has oblong sleeves with an arc cut away in front. Neither is trimmed. The gown for the doctoral degree is faced down the front with velvet, with three bars of the same fabric circling the sleeves. This gown may be trimmed in brown or gold.

Hoods It is customary in most institutions to dispense with the hood for bachelor’s degrees. UW hoods the master’s candidates before the processional and doctoral candidates as part of the ceremony. Candidates for the professional diploma wear their master’s hood. The hood is always brown. The master’s hood is three and one-half feet long. Hoods are lined with the official color(s) of the college or university conferring the degree. The doctoral hood is four feet long with side panels. Hoods are lined with the official color(s) of the college or university conferring the degree. The edge of the hood is velvet, and the color of the fabric indicates the degree subject.

Caps and Tassels Commonly known as mortarboards, caps are brown, and tassels are gold. UW Brown and Gold has been the traditional colors of the University of Wyoming since 1895, selected from the Brown-Eyed Susan, a flower native of southeastern Wyoming. They remain one of the most identifiable components of the UW Brand. Generally, the tassel is worn on the right front side of the mortarboard before the degree is conferred and transferred to the left afterward.

Graduates from the Honors College complete a rigorous interdisciplinary course of study, produce a significant independent research or creative capstone project, and receive a minor in Honors on their transcript. Extensive opportunities for experiential learning, financially supported internships, and study-abroad round out the Honors College experience. Throughout this program, the symbol “+” before a student’s name indicates Honors College and signifies graduates who have accomplished all the requirements for the Honors minor.

Speakers and Honorary Marshals

LOver the course of her career, Wyrsch has supported a number of non-profit entities, with a primary focus on the University of Wyoming where she has served on the Advisory Board of the College of Arts & Sciences and the Advisory Board of the Haub School. She currently serves on the University of Wyoming Foundation Board as secretary.

Jack Tennant ’10, Alumni Speaker

All ceremonies

Jack Tennant serves as the executive director of the University of Wyoming Alumni Association. Tennant’s journey with UW began back in 2006, when he arrived on campus as a student on a football and wrestling scholarship, later earning his degree in communication and journalism. He kicked off his career at the Cowboy Joe Club, where, under the guidance of his friend, mentor, and UWAA predecessor, Keener Fry, he rose from intern to a full-time position.

In 2013, Tennant joined the UW Foundation as a major gift officer, eventually stepping up as director of annual giving. There, he launched the Digital First Initiative and Donor Experience Program that boosted annual fundraising by over 30%. Today, leading the association, Tennant is all about connecting and celebrating alumni near and far with an incredible team, fresh ideas, and infectious energy.

Beyond work, Tennant serves on a handful of community boards and committees. He lives in

Laramie with his wife and UW alumna, Jenna, a physical education teacher, and their two boys, Todd and Vince.

At UW, Hagy has been recognized for both teaching and research. In 2007, she was honored with the John P. Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award. Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.) Honoris Causa L

Dr. Kenneth L. Robertson, M.D., F.A.C.P.

KennethRobertson has been a dedicated physician and educator in Laramie, Wyoming, for nearly five decades. A board-certified internist, he has devoted his career to patient care, medical education, and mentorship. His passion for medicine was fostered by a family background in healthcare and strengthened through the guidance of a mentor who encouraged him to specialize in internal medicine.

While not a Wyoming native, Robertson has been enamored with the Mountain West since a childhood Boy Scout trip took him through the Rocky Mountains on the way to scout camp in New Mexico. He graduated from medical school at the University of Maryland in 1972 and was able to fulfill his dream of heading back west when he moved to Denver to

complete his internship and residency at Presbyterian Medical Center.

Following his postgraduate medical training in 1975, Robertson served in the U.S. Air Force as the chief of internal medicine at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, attaining the rank of major. After completing his military service, he moved to Laramie in 1977, establishing himself as a trusted physician and hospitalist, practicing full-time until 2021.

Beyond clinical practice, Robertson has been a passionate advocate for medical education for over 40 years. He has taught courses for the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wyoming, mentored master’s and doctoral students, and contributed to research through his service on the UW Institutional Review Board. Additionally, he played an instrumental role in the WWAMI Medical Education Program, shaping the future of medical professionals in the region.

Robertson’s love for the west has only grown since his Boy Scout days. When he moved to Laramie, he established the Broken R Ranch, where he grew award-winning hay crops and continues to produce top-quality hay to this day. Until recently, he also guided elk hunters in the Northern Wind River Range every fall. Robertson also loves cowboy history, and when he is not teaching, practicing, or ranching, he can be found trading antique collectibles at Western shows.

A Wyomingite through and through, Robertson’s unwavering commitment to patient care, education, and mentorship has left a lasting impact on the University of Wyoming, the state of Wyoming, and beyond.
