First Destination Report 2020-21

Executive Summary The UW-River Falls Career Services Office oversees the First Destination Survey data collection, analysis, and reporting. This survey documents the post-graduate outcomes for baccalaureate and graduate degree recipients who graduated during the 2020-21 academic year including August 2020, December 2020, January 2021, and May 2021.

This year continued to be marked by the global pandemic, which generated economic, social, and personal challenges that impacted our graduates and the university community in significant ways. It is reasonable to expect these challenges impacted our degree recipients’ post-graduate pursuits and transitions.

The data in this report came from several verifiable sources including a campus-wide online survey which invited graduates to provide information about their post-graduation status at regular intervals for six months following their graduation. In addition to the survey, data was also gathered from communicating with faculty, searching social media profiles, and calling graduates.

The Career Services staff extend our congratulations to graduates who have secured employment, are enrolled in continuing education, engaged in service roles, or other first destinations. We are proud of your accomplishments in these challenging times. Additionally, we extend our care and support to those who have experienced prolonged challenges and still may be seeking their next steps.

Methods Data Collection

The primary method used to collect graduate outcomes data was an online survey. Requests to complete the survey were sent approximately two months prior to graduation, at graduation, and monthly for six months post-graduation.

Direct surveys of graduates were the primary and preferred source of data, however, other sources of information were utilized when survey data was not available. For example, verifiable graduate outcomes reported by employers or gathered by departments were added into the data set. For survey non-respondents, Career Services made phone calls and searched social media sites including Facebook and LinkedIn. The staff utilized caution in our review of social media profiles and only captured data appearing to have been updated recently. Career Services provided department chairs with an individualized list documenting the graduates from their departments for whom data was missing as well as those indicating they were still seeking employment. The department chairs were asked to review this list and provide information for graduates. Data collection concluded on Friday, Dec. 31, 2021.

In total, UW-River Falls has knowledge of the outcomes of 80% of the 2020-21 graduates. The term “knowledge rate” defines the percentage of graduates for whom reasonable and verifiable information concerning the graduates’ post-graduation career activities is known. The knowledge rate is considerably higher than the national recommended minimum of 65%.

Confidentiality The privacy and confidentiality of UW-River Falls graduates is highly respected and protected throughout the process. All personally identifying information is removed from data presentations. To further protect confidentiality, salary data is only reported in aggregate.

Standards and Protocols The terminology, standards, and protocols of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) were utilized throughout this study. NACE is the primary national organization focused on the employment of the college educated.

Special Considerations Students with multiple majors are counted in each major so total number of graduates is larger than total number of degrees awarded.

Graduates receiving their MSE-School Psychology degree were removed as 100% will continue in pursuit of their educational specialist degree, which is a terminal degree. This decision was made in consultation with the Counseling and School Psychology Department and eliminates data being reported on the same students multiple times.

Hired Before Graduation WHITNEY Baehr

Every Falcon has a different path. For many, their UW-River Falls education is a significant stop on the path that leads to the workforce. Thanks to internships, networking, and global opportunities, numerous Falcons land full-time employment before they graduate.

HOMETOWN: Withee, WI MAJOR: Elementary Education POSITION: Fourth-Grade Teacher at Mazapan School in La Ceiba, Honduras “I went to Europe with the International Traveling Classroom, and it gave me the push to do more. I also participated in the Guy Healy Program where I taught English in Japan for six weeks,” Whitney said. The international travel, along with early classroom placements during her coursework, have given Whitney the preparation to thrive post-graduation.

As Whitney reflects on her time at UW-River Falls, she realizes how much she’s changed. “Coming into college I was a people pleaser. I didn’t really have my own voice. After my sophomore study abroad experience, I realized I can do my own thing. I don’t have to do what everyone else is doing. I took charge of myself because I have to live my life for me, and as a result I became more confident with my decisions.”

GINA D’Agostino

HOMETOWN: Appleton, WI MAJOR: Marketing Communications POSITION: Front Office Agent, JW Marriot-Minneapolis, Mall of America, Bloomington, MN Gina completed four internships to help prepare her for a career after graduation. “I worked in Career Services, which helped me gain the confidence and professional skills I needed.” she said. Gina attended the Career Fair every semester to strengthen her networking. Her early internship experiences resulted in obtaining even bigger opportunities in Florida with NBC Sports Group at the Golf Channel. This combined her love of golf (she was on the UWRF golf team) and marketing communications. To top it all off, she landed an internship with Walt Disney World the next year. There, she even found time to do an undergraduate research project about marketing, merchandise, and promotion.

AUSTIN Webber

HOMETOWN: New Richmond, WI MAJOR: Computer Science and Information Systems POSITION: Cloud Support Associate, Amazon Web Services, Seattle, WA Austin gained invaluable IT experience working for the Division of Technology Services (DoTS) on campus. During his nearly four years on the DoTS team, he held four different positions getting background in many facets of IT. He also had the opportunity to attend conferences that allowed him to meet and network with industry professionals. “My work experience and these connections helped me get an internship with the software company, VMware,” Austin noted. The internship provided Austin with experience on the business side of computer science. The position with the Atlanta-based company was remote, but he still had the chance to meet hundreds of people.

“This position helped me find out where I fit best in a company,” Austin said.

SHELLY Schmitt

HOMETOWN: Somerset, WI MAJOR: Food Science and Technology POSITION: Talent Acceleration Program (TAP) Associate, Land O’Lakes, Spencer, WI/Arden Hills, MN Shelly hit the ground running at UWRF. She and some of her classmates restarted the campus Food Science Club. She also built her resume by completing multiple internships at Land O’Lakes. This gave Shelly a view of R&D and supply chain, which helped her land a job as a Talent Acceleration Program (TAP) Associate after graduation. She will spend a year at the Spencer WI cheese plant. Her second year will be spent at Land O’Lakes corporate headquarters in Arden Hills, MN. Shelly advises future Falcons to not be afraid to go after something new.

“You need to go after it if you want something,” she advised. “If you work hard, good things will come.”

BLAKE Anderson

HOMETOWN: Waunakee, WI MAJOR: Accounting and Economics POSITION: Tax and Audit Associate, CBIZ MHM, Minneapolis, MN Blake will be working full-time as a tax and audit associate for CBIZ MHM in Minneapolis. It’s a familiar place due to a Career Trek visit. “I talked to some of the employees there and gave them my resume. They reached out to me before the Career Fair. This led to internships and eventually a full-time position post-graduation.”

In addition to the Career Treks, Blake also leveraged the multiple offerings of Career Services. “Career Services helped me with my resume to get my foot in the door. Students should look into Career Services and all the available services. I can’t thank them enough for helping me start my career.”

ERIC Wachtendonk

HOMETOWN: Bloomer, WI MAJOR: Dairy Science POSITION: Crop and Dairy Insurance Agent, ARM Services, Barron, WI The summer after Eric’s junior year, he interned with ARM Services in Barron, WI. Eric was asked to continue working the following academic year and eventually was offered a full-time position. “During my internship, I learned about dairy insurance, and in my new position, I’ll be a crop and dairy insurance agent. I’m excited to get into the field to help farmers protect their bottom line.”

Eric recommends future Falcons get involved their first year. “I went to the Involvement Fair and was able to see what clubs and organizations were out there. Pick several different things and try them out. Take advantage of opportunities to learn outside the classroom,” he advises.

NEVADA Glackler

HOMETOWN: Mankato, MN MAJOR: Field Biology POSITION: Mammal Nursery Manager at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota, Roseville, MN Nevada spent her first couple of years on campus getting involved in clubs and organizations. She also worked at the Campus Information Desk in the University Center. “The job at the Information Desk helped me develop my professional skills,” she noted.

The last two years of her college career were spent focusing on internships.

Nevada interned with Assistance Dog Education Program and Training (ADEPT). Over the course of the internship, Nevada worked with four service dogs in training. Nevada attended the Career Fair where she interviewed for an internship with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, which led to a full-time permanent position post-graduation.

Alumni Career Satisfaction UW-River Falls Career Services partnered with the Career Leadership Collective consulting group for the second year in a row to conduct a national alumni survey. The National Alumni Career Mobility (NACM) Survey helps colleges and universities better understand the education satisfaction, career pathways, career satisfaction, economic mobility and community engagement of alumni 5- and 10-years post-graduation.

The survey was administered from November 2021 through January 2022 to university alumni who completed a bachelor’s degree in calendar years 2011 and 2016.
