STUDENT SPEAKERS
The following students have been chosen to represent their respective colleges at today’s ceremony. These remarkable individuals, all graduating seniors, radiate a profound sense of Falcon pride, deeply rooted in their connection to the UWRF community and their transformative experiences at the university.
Madison O'Donnell
Madison O’Donnell chose UW-River Falls for its scenic campus and well-structured social work program.
O’Donnell, who hails from St. Paul, Minn., decided to pursue a degree in social work because she wanted to engage with people and provide support in meaningful ways. She values the opportunities the social work profession provides to connect with clients and assist them in achieving their goals.
During her time at UWRF, she gained valuable experience both inside and outside the classroom. One of her favorite academic experiences was a field internship at Red Wing High School where she worked with students receiving individualized education program (IEP) services. In addition to her internship, she also conducted undergraduate research about mental health perceptions on campus.
O’Donnell has been actively involved in campus life, participating in organizations including the women’s soccer club and the Student Social Work Association, where she served as president. She also worked as a resident assistant for two years and as a residence life community assistant during her senior year.
In her spare time, O’Donnell enjoys spending time with friends on campus, attending events organized by resident assistants in her building and reading new books. Reflecting on her time at UWRF, she expressed gratitude for the opportunities, friendships and support that helped her pursue her goals.
Katie Zimmer
Growing up on her family’s farm in Glen Flora, Katie Zimmer developed a deep passion for agriculture and a love of learning. Driven by her desire to contribute to the agricultural industry, she decided to attend UW-River Falls. Following her first year, she served as a Wisconsin FFA State Vice President. After completing her term, she returned to UWRF to continue pursuing a double major in agricultural business and agricultural education.
Throughout her college career, Zimmer immersed herself in campus life, participating in a wide range of organizations. She was active in the Agricultural Education Society, Alpha Tau Alpha, the National AgriMarketing Association, Sigma Alpha, Collegiate Farm Bureau and the Student Government Association. Zimmer also served as a Campus Ambassador and Student Advisor for Agriculture Future of America, where she helped lead programming for college students across the country.
Zimmer’s college experience included multiple internships, a study abroad trip and numerous conferences, all of which helped her grow both personally and professionally. These experiences fueled her passion for making a difference in the lives of others. Upon graduation, Zimmer plans to pursue a career educating others about agriculture and helping shape the next generation of leaders.
Jack Schindler Van Hoof
Jack Schindler Van Hoof is an English and creative writing major and journalism minor from Hudson. Since 2022, he has served as editor-in-chief of the Student Voice, the UW-River Falls student newspaper, covering public affairs, feature, financial and business news.
Van Hoof has written 37 stories for the Student Voice. His favorite stories include a 2024 article on a UWRF Dance Theatre concert, a 2022 feature on Textbook Services and a 2023 article about a UWRF alum who directed a street art project in River Falls. He has also written many of the newspaper’s editorials on topics including the need for mental health initiatives on campus and the essential role of student employees. For these contributions and more, he has received several awards from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and the UW-River Falls Chancellor's Award for Students.
Van Hoof has participated in other student organizations, including “Prologue,” the UW-River Falls literary magazine. He has also worked as a student technician for the Division of Technology Services. In his free time, he enjoys writing fiction and poetry, running, listening to podcasts and spending time outdoors.
CHANCELLOR’S AWARD
The university had long honored academic achievements but lacked recognition for non-academic contributions. In 1977, the chancellor and Student Affairs staff sought to change this by creating the Chancellor’s Award.
This award, a bronze medallion on a red ribbon, is a smaller version of the chancellor’s official medallion and features the university seal. It comes with a certificate from the chancellor.
Given primarily to upperclass students, the award recognizes service to the university rather than academic performance. It is usually presented at the all-campus awards reception but may be granted at other times.
Names with ◊ in the program designate Chancellor’s Award recipients.
