How do you LIVE UNITED?” “My name is Mackenzie and I am four and a half years old. I LIVE UNITED by telling others to get involved. While she plans to walk in parades as a United Way representative in the future, Mackenzie has already attended several events and festivals in Burlington and Waterford. “I help United Way by wearing my LIVE UNITED t-shirt and giving kids balloons. When I grow up, I want to work for United Way.” “Every month I get books from United Way. My favorite book is The Little Engine That Could. I really like it when my grandma reads it with me.” Mackenzie is one of 360 children from western Racine County communities who receive free books in the mail each month as part of United Way’s Imagination Library.

HELP BUILD A STRONGER COMMUNITY For low-income families, the stressors of a weak economy, uncertain employment and concerns about how their children do in school can be overwhelming. For employers, these issues can lead to poor work performance and absenteeism. In Racine County more than 5,000 families are either living in poverty or earning wages too low to sustain their households. Children growing up under such circumstances tend to repeat the cycle of poverty so the problems continue generation after generation. United Way of Racine County’s community impact initiative, Advancing Family Assets, offers hope and help to low-wage working families through its intensive coaching approach that works with all members of the family in ways that respect their strengths while supporting them to be successful in key areas of their lives: ➤➤ Securing or improving employment ➤➤ Managing financial assets through budgeting and banking ➤➤ Gaining skills through school and training ➤➤ Maintaining healthy relationships and healthy lifestyles As an Advancing Family Assets first family in 2009, the Gipsons achieved many of their goals. Now, in addition to working stable jobs and managing their income, they are proud owners of a reliable vehicle. The Gipsons have done all that they can to ensure that their children have opportunities for healthy development with screenings and preschool. As a strong family, they manage to strike a healthy balance between the rigors of work life and home life.

Our Goal: By 2020, Advancing Family Assets will have measurably increased the financial and family stability of at least 500 families in Racine County, achieving a variety of positive outcomes within the families leading to increases in the number of reliable and productive workers, ultimately reducing poverty in our Racine County communities. Your United Way contribution helps Advancing Family Assets prepare families to succeed. Adults will be better prepared as good workers and great parents, and children have best chances for positive futures. Strong families are the cornerstone of a strong community. When families succeed, the community thrives. “The program [AFA] has been great for our family. It helped us become more goal-oriented.” – Dameaka Gipson
