We proudly support United Way of New York City and its dedication to our city’s most vulnerable communities. Congratulations to tonight’s honorees!
We are thrilled to be a part of the 30th Annual Gridiron Gala.
Linda E. Johnson & Bruce C. Ratner
As president and CEO of Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), Linda E. Johnson leads one of the nation’s most historic and most innovative library systems. The 61-branch public library system is the fifth largest library system in the country and the ninth largest cultural institution in New York, operating with an annual budget of $150 million while serving 2.7 million residents. Linda has overseen BPL’s transformation from an analog to a modern library with state-of-the-art technology available for free to all patrons, working with elected officials, private foundations, and library stakeholders, to ensure ensures that underserved and underrepresented communities have access to knowledge on every platform.
Under Linda’s leadership, the Library’s presence and impact in the community have expanded beyond the confines of its 61 branches. BPL now hosts collections at nearly 200 off-site locations and provides services in 552 outreach sites, including schools, homeless shelters, senior centers and correctional facilities. The Library’s Outreach Services Department has developed new and nationally recognized resources for immigrants, seniors, veterans, the incarcerated, the homebound and other vulnerable or marginalized patrons. This past year, BPL launched Books Unbanned, an initiative designed to give youth who have been impacted by the alarming wave of book bans throughout the country, free access to BPL’s digital collection and learning databases. Combating censorship is at the core of the Library’s work and is one of the most important issues Linda has grappled with during her tenure.
Prior to joining BPL in 2011, Linda served as president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, CEO of the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation, and president of JCI Data. Currently, Linda sits on the boards of Hamilton College, Sing for Hope, and the Curtis Institute of Music. She is also an advisory director on the board of the Metropolitan Opera.

GRAHAM GANO Placekicker New York Giants
Gano has embraced New York City as his own and has been winning the hearts of New Yorkers with his actions off the field just as much as he does on the field. Since joining the Giants in 2020, Gano and his family have dedicated themselves to supporting the New York City Police Foundation’s (NYCPF) Far Rockaway Giants. This NYPD-led program provides tutoring, mentoring and the opportunity for boys to play flag football while being coached by police officers in Far Rockaway, Queens. Gano has contributed thousands of dollars to support the program and dedicated countless hours of time with each of the boys and police officers. Gano was part of the Giants player group that inspired the program to expand into Harlem and hopes to have the program exist in all five boroughs. During the 2022 season, he teamed up with MetLife to spread awareness and help raise over $80,000 for the NYCPF program. In Week 13 of the NFL season, Gano represented the NYCPF and Far Rockaway Giants for My Cause, My Cleats, the league-wide initiative that allows players to share causes that are important to them.
As a team captain and leader in the locker room, Gano used his jersey number swap with Kayvon Thibodeaux, the Giants 2022 draft pick, to provide $50,000 of support to Puppies Behind Bars. This nonprofit organization trains incarcerated individuals to raise service dogs for wounded war veterans and first responders, and facility dogs for police. The contribution funded the training of five service dogs, which is a personal number to Graham and his wife Brittany as they have five children.

Broadridge celebrates the 30th Annual Gridiron Gala and United Way of New York City
We are proud to team up with United Way of New York City and support its mission to break down barriers and help improve the lives of low-income New Yorkers. Let’s help accelerate change and create new opportunities for the deserving members of our community. Together, we can make a difference.
GIANTS IN THE COMMUNITY
The New York Football Giants have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to support the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area since 1925. “We are extremely proud of our longstanding relationship with United Way of New York City as they tirelessly work to provide the best future for our community,” said Allison Stangeby, Vice President of Community & Corporate Relations for the New York Giants.
In 2016, the Giants launched their partnership with United Way of New York City (UWNYC) and Character Playbook™— a character education curriculum. This past year, Giants players Xavier McKinney, Casey Kreiter, Matt Peart, and Nick Gates, met virtually with students to discuss their own life experiences through the NFL’s Character Playbook and Mental Wellness Basics curriculum. Stangeby continued by lauding UWNYC and its “holistic approach to supporting our community through their in-depth programming for people of all ages. It is an honor to work alongside them to provide opportunities for all community members.”
The Giants also partner with UWNYC for other events including celebrating Black History Month through their annual Historic Black College and Universities (HBCU) panel event. In 2022, Ashley Lynn, Director of Player Engagement; Steven Price, Pro Personnel Scout; Michael Becton, Senior Producer of Content & Production; and Giants Legend Antoine Bethea, who all attended HBCUs, joined UWNYC to discuss their college experiences with high school students. Additionally, Xavier McKinney hosted his All-Star Bowling event with several teammates to raise funds for UWNYC’s ReadNYC programming. The Giants also worked with the NFL Foundation to provide a $15,000 digital divide grant to UWNYC to support students in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Through the Touchdown for Teens ticket program, Giants season ticket members donated over 1,600 tickets to UWNYC for youth to attend home games during the 2022 season.

SOLOMON THOMAS Defensive Lineman New York Jets
Hometown Hero Solomon Thomas is a New York Jets is a sixth-year defensive tackle signed in 2022. Selected by San Francisco in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, he played 82 career games for the 49ers, the Raiders and now the Jets. Thomas attended Stanford University where he appeared in 27 games over three seasons. As a senior, he was named a third-team All-America by the Associated Press and earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors and the Morris Trophy award.
Off the field, Thomas has a heart for helping people find hope when they are struggling with feeling emotionally lost. After the passing of his older sister, Ella, in January 2018, he began dedicating his life to sharing her story and working with nonprofit organizations to raise awareness and secure funds for mental health and suicide prevention work. A long with his family, Thomas founded The Defensive Line to honor Ella and bring a message of hope and help to other at-risk young people with their stated mission, “To end the epidemic of youth suicide, especially for people of color, by transforming the way we communicate and connect about mental health.” Solomon has been an impactful keynote speaker and panel member at events for American Foundation Suicide Prevention Gala, Mental Health America, San Francisco Suicide Prevention, NFLPA Super Bowl Players Summit, Kick the Stigma, Bring Change 2 Mind, and USC Annenberg Summit. He has also been the recipient of the 2019 AFSP Lifesaver Award with his parents Martha and Chris.
Most recently, Solomon participated in the announcement of the new 988 Suicide Prevention Hotline in a national campaign, served on a panel for Paramount+ Global, and continues to work with the NFL to improve mental health programming in the league.

The New York Jets create impactful programing that offers lasting legacies for our community. Initiatives funded by the New York Jets Foundation positively influence the lives of young people in the tri-state area and provide opportunity for disadvantaged communities. From launching football teams at urban high schools to fostering positive school environments, the New York Jets are committed to unifying our community for change and making a difference.
Last year, the New York Jets announced a $1 million donation to help aid the people of Ukraine. The donation is being split between various organizations, each receiving $100,000. “These donations will positively impact Ukrainian refugees and their families with essential supplies,” said New York Jets Chairman Robert Wood Johnson. “The need for resources is continuously growing. Our thoughts continue to be with the innocent lives who have been affected and all those who are suffering.”
Additionally, The New York Jets, Nike and Gatorade announced the expansion of their High School Girls Flag Football League, which will continue play this spring. The league expanded to over 100 teams in Long Island, the Hudson Valley and New Jersey, building upon the eight New Jersey schools that launched the league in 2021. The Jets, Nike and Gatorade believe girls should have the opportunity to play football. The Jets High School Girls Flag Football League provides character building, perseverance, teamwork, and dedication skills that empower girls throughout every aspect of their lives. This is the third year for the Jets High School Girls Flag Football League in New Jersey, the second on Long Island and first in the Hudson Valley.

THE NFL & UNITED WAY
For 50 years, United Way and the National Football League (NFL) have worked together to improve the lives of young people across the country. In New York City, United Way of New York City (UWNYC), the New York Giants and the New York Jets team up to impact children and families living in some of our City’s most-challenged communities.
Since 2016 United Way and the NFL have partnered on Character Playbook™ , an innovative digital social-emotional learning program that uses evidence-based strategies to educate students on how to cultivate and maintain healthy relationships during their critical middle school years. Schools across the country have had access to Character Playbook™ at no cost. The program has reached more than 1,000,000 students in over 12,000 schools across the nation in over six years.
Like our physical health, our mental health can be strengthened or diminished through daily habits. Understanding Mental Wellness introduces students to the topic of mental health and the ways in which they can implement coping strategies to manage their own challenging thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This course recognizes that students can be faced with external circumstances beyond their control which can impact their mental health.
Schools that teach character education report higher academic performance, improved attendance, reduced violence, fewer disciplinary issues, reduction in substance abuse, and less vandalism. The New York Jets partners with United Way of Newark and the New York Giants works with United Way of New York City to support students through this initiative.
Although the pandemic prevented UWNYC and the NFL from hosting some of their most beloved programs, it did not stop the teams’ unwavering dedication and support from shining through. From fundraising to volunteering, empowering youth, to helping increase awareness of community challenges, the NFL has used their influence, players, and team spirit to help New York City’s most-vulnerable neighbors.

INFINITY SONG Detroit, Michigan
Succeeding Detroit’s esteemed Boyd’s, band members Abraham, Angel, Israel and “MoMo” grew up in a home where musical and creative expression was fostered and encouraged at a young age, performing in front of audiences since Pre-K. Infinity Song’s members are not only singers but also songwriters, arrangers, instrumentalists, and music producers.
The band released their EP Mad Love in 2020 and followed with a deluxe in 2021 that featured lead single, “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” speaking to the group’s faith and quest for longevity and “Mad Love Remix” which features guest collaborators Tobe Nwigwe and Rapsody. The project includes sounds all overlaid with rich, intricate harmonies, warm vocals and additional, surprise collaborations with Jerry Wonda among others.
Since its formation, Infinity’s Song has consistently performed around NYC, cultivating a grassroots fanbase through pop up street performances in Central Park and the NYC subway stations. Singing on stages both small and great, the group has toured the U.S., been featured on National Television (NBC’s The Today Show and ABC’s The View), and frequently collaborates with other musical acts - most recently Kanye West, Jon Batiste, Tori Kelly and more. In the summer of 2015, the group released their first EP and in the fall of 2016 were officially signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Records.
