LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP
Dear Friends, WELCOME TO THE 28 TH ANNUAL GRIDIRON GALA! For nearly 45 years, United Way and the National Football League have huddled to improve the lives of youth across the country. Here, in our community the New York Jets, New York Giants, and United Way of New York City, along with all of you, gather at the Gridiron Gala to celebrate the impact of this partnership and the incredible work we accomplish together. This year has been a year like none other. When last year’s Gala was affected by COVID-19, none of us imagined that 365 days later we would still be adapting to this global health crisis and the social problems it inflamed. Yet through the devastating pandemic, the heightened focus on racial injustice, and unprecedented economic and educational challenges, our community has banded together— stronger than ever. Our COVID-19 Community Fund raised an incredible $17 million and impacted the lives of millions of New Yorkers with emergency food, eviction prevention support, books and educational supplies and resources, funding to support vital small businesses, and access to healthcare, testing, and vaccinations. The NFL, corporate partners, foundations, and individual donors—many who are in our audience tonight—were instrumental in supporting relief and recovery efforts. In fact, the New York Jets made the first corporate gift to our fund, with the New York Giants just behind them through the NFL Draft-a-Thon. We are incredibly proud to honor these teams as this year’s Hometown Heroes along with our Community Quarterbacks from 2021 and 2020. Thank you to our sponsors, and Gridiron Gala Committee for your loyalty and dedication—none of this would be possible without you. And of course, a tremendous thank you to each of you. It is your continued generosity and support that have raised more than $32 million at the Gridiron since 1994. Tonight, we celebrate and reflect on the accomplishments we have achieved in partnership with the New York Jets, New York Giants, and all of you and we fuel our passion to continue our drive down the field. Thank you and enjoy the evening,
DONALD F. DONAHUE Board Co-Chair

ABOUT
UNITED WAY OF NEW YORK CITY
United Way of New York City (UWNYC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping low-income New Yorkers make ends meet and lead self-sufficient lives. With many of the barriers to achieving self-sufficiency and improving economic mobility, stemming from decades of systemic racism, our work has and continues to be deeply rooted in racial equity and social justice. Our Mission: To help mobilize our communities to break down barriers and build opportunities that improve the lives of low-income New Yorkers for the benefit of all. Our Vision: We envision a community where all individuals and families have access to quality education and the opportunity to lead healthy and financially secure lives. A community that is increasing reading proficiency for children, building career pathways toward employer-driven jobs, expanding the emergency food system, and helping to reform the criminal justice system— all to provide a more equitable chance at future success. Overcoming the challenges that our city faces is no easy feat and to solve those challenges we must shift mindsets, practices, and policies in neighborhoods of concentrated poverty—and citywide—to implement and scale what works. We empower cross-sector partners to break down the systemic barriers that have historically and currently limit communities of color from accessing equal opportunities in education, job training, food access, healthcare, and essential resources. No one organization can do this work alone. It’s why UWNYC helps to mobilize the resources of our corporate and employee partners, NYC residents, community based organizations (CBOs) and government authorities —aligning, strengthening, and forging these unlikely partnerships. This ability to integrate and coordinate corporate, philanthropic, and government actions against common challenges is what makes UWNYC unique and a critical component to our city’s success.

HOMETOWN HERO
FOLORUNSO FATUKASI Defensive Line New York Jets
Folorunso Fatukasi, a Defensive Lineman from the University of Connecticut, was drafted by the New York Jets in the 6th-round of the 2018 NFL Draft. During his tenure with the Jets, Fatukasi has established himself as a leader both on and off the field. A native of Far Rockaway, New York, Fatukasi was the first player in Beach Channel history to go directly from graduation to an FBS/Division I-A school. In his 29 career games with the Jets, he has registered 74 tackles, 3.0 sacks, four passes defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. In 2019, Fatukasi was selected by the Jets staff that regularly interacts with the players as the 2019 Kyle Clifton “Good Guy” Award Winner. Most recently, in December 2020, Fatukasi partnered with the Jets Academy, an afterschool enrichment program that provides elementary school students with enjoyable learning experiences that enhance their literacy, math skills, creativity, community awareness and self-esteem. Together with his fellow teammates, Fatukasi participated in a virtual, holiday shipping spree with 10 local students from East Hanover, New Jersey. Football is part of the Fatukasi bloodline. Fatukasi has two younger brothers who currently play football at Rutgers University. “It’s a surreal feeling having all three of us playing in New Jersey,’’ Folorunso told the New York Post during the 2020 season. “We didn’t expect this. It’s kind of cool how all three of us are here together.’’

JETS IN THE COMMUNITY
The New York Jets take great pride in a long-standing, year-round commitment to our community. Programs funded by the New York Jets Foundation look to positively influence the lives of young men and women in the tri-state area by supporting youth football, preventing bullying, and promoting social justice, particularly in disadvantaged communities. This past year the New York Jets and the Johnson Family made a $1 million joint donation to multiple local United Way agencies in an effort to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic, which included $500,000 to the United Way of New York City. “The United Way continues to improve lives around the world and we need community-based organizations more than ever at this moment,” said Jets CEO Christopher Johnson. “Everyone has been impacted by this invisible enemy and the United Way is meeting it head-on at home, helping those disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and the economic consequences of the outbreak.” Additionally, the Jets launched the first Girls High School Flag Football League in New Jersey with eight teams. This, along with our annual $50,000 contribution to the New York City Public Schools Athletic League Girls Varsity Flag Football program, demonstrates our dedication to give more opportunities to females to participate in sports. In addition to our focus on youth development, the Jets support the efforts of the Lupus Research Alliance, numerous established charitable organizations and causes sponsored by the NFL.

HOMETOWN HERO
LORENZO CARTER Outside Linebacker New York Giants
Lorenzo Carter, an outside linebacker out of the University of Georgia, was drafted by the New York Giants in the 3rd-round of the 2018 NFL Draft. During his time with the Giants, he has established himself as a leader both on and off the field. Most recently, Lorenzo was a captain of the New York Giants/Brooklyn Nets Team of Teams group that partnered with United Way of New York City’s EducateNYC program. Throughout the 2020 season, Lorenzo led his team of players and coaches as they fought for educational equity in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Through their focus on the Brownsville community, the team adopted two schools, P.S. 165 and Brownsville Academy High School, and provided support to their students, staff members and families. This partnership allowed Giants players and coaches to mentor these students and encouraged them to pursue their dreams. In addition, the team provided these schools with PPE, food pantry items, Amazon gift cards and additional funds for resources. Lorenzo represented both United Way of New York City and Atlanta during the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats initiative to spread awareness for the mission of United Way. Carter also participated in a virtual Character Playbook event with United Way and Everfi to discuss with students the importance of communication and managing emotions.

GIANTS IN THE COMMUNITY
“Like United Way of New York City, the New York Giants are honored to be a part of this City’s great history and commitment to helping others,” says Allison Stangeby, Vice President of Community & Corporate Relations for the New York Giants. And it’s true. Since 1925, the New York Football Giants organization has shown a remarkable commitment to working for the betterment of those in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area. The Giants’ Community Relations team works diligently to create and implement programs that have established the club as a productive and contributing member of the community. During the 2020 season, Giants players partnered to learn about and address social injustice throughout the New York and New Jersey area. Each team, consisting of ten players and three coaches, was assigned to one of the following cities; the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens, Westchester, East Orange, Newark or Paterson. The teams then came together to discuss and select an issue they wanted to focus on with a non-profit partner organization throughout the season. The Brooklyn Team of Teams group, led by Lorenzo Carter, knew that educational inequities largely impacted underserved communities and they wanted to work on improving opportunities for children. After discussions with the UWNYC staff, the team decided to focus on the community of Brownsville, Brooklyn. Through the United Way of New York City’s EducateNYC program, this group of Giants players and coaches adopted P.S. 165 and Brownsville Academy High School to provide their students with over $60,000 of PPE, food pantry items, tablets, internet access and additional resources. On top of the financial support, the players and coaches engaged in Zoom calls to mentor the students throughout the season. Additionally, The Giants Foundation was created to provide grants that assist charitable organizations involved in education, health, youth-related services, and civic affairs. In 2016, the Giants launched their partnership with United Way of New York City and Character Playbook™—a character education curriculum. This past year, Giants players Julian Love, Lorenzo Carter, Oshane Ximines, and Jackson Barton, virtually met with students throughout the area to discuss their own life experiences through the NFL’s Character Playbook curriculum. Over the past 5 years, a total of 47 schools and 2,240 students have participated in the Character Playbook program throughout our community. The Giants are also appreciative of their long-standing partnerships with respected charities, including the American Heart Association, Make A Wish of New Jersey, My Sisters’ Place, Rock and Wrap it Up!, Covenant House, Special Olympics of New Jersey and many more. Stangeby says, “Our partnerships with charities like United Way of New York City allow us to effectively dedicate our time and resources to the most important causes in our community. The ability to be of service to our neighbors and to witness some of the truly great programs that are taking place is a tremendous blessing.”
THE NFL & UNITED WAY For nearly 50 years, United Way and the National Football League (NFL) have worked together to improve the lives of young people across the country. In New York City, United Way of New York City, the New York Giants and the New York Jets team up to impact children and families living in some of our City’s most-challenged communities. Since 2016 United Way and the NFL have partnered on Character PlaybookTM, an innovative digital learning experience that uses evidence-based strategies to educate students on how to cultivate and maintain healthy relationships during their critical middle school years. Character PlaybookTM has reached almost 500,000 students in over 5,000 schools across the nation in close to four years. Schools that teach character education report higher academic performance, improved attendance, reduced violence, fewer disciplinary issues, reduction in substance abuse, and less vandalism. The New York Jets partners with United Way of Newark and the New York Giants works with United Way of New York City to support students through this initiative. Although this year prevented UWNYC and the NFL from hosting some of their most beloved programs, it did not stop the teams’ unwavering dedication and support from shining through. From fundraising to volunteering, empowering youth, to helping increase awareness of community challenges, the NFL has used their influence, players, and team spirit to help New York City’s most-vulnerable neighbors.

After the first four running backs had gotten hurt, Rashad was called into the game where he ended up scoring a total of four touchdowns, two on offense and two on defense. Following that year, Rashad transferred to a private school, where he repeated his junior year and started to take full accountability for both his academics and athletics.
