UW Music 2012-13 Concert Season

Welcome Milestones, anniversaries, and collaborations have been repeating motifs in the planning of our 2012-13 season. The milestones present a wonderful symmetry, coincidentally occurring in multiples of fifty: we observe 50 years of Ethnomusicology at the University, the 100-year anniversary of the 1913 debut of The Rite of Spring, and the 150-year anniversary of the birth of Claude Debussy. Through our observation of these milestones and the many other exciting performances and collaborations with friends and guests from the region and from around the world, the UW School of Music shines as a major concert-presenting organization in the Pacific Northwest.

Our mission is to study and perform the greatest music from all time and to pioneer new directions in creating the music of today. This year, as every year, our faculty musicians bring together their dazzling virtuosity and deep understanding of music in performances at Meany Theater, with pianist Craig Sheppard turning his attention to the music of Claude Debussy (October 23 and April 16), pianist Robin McCabe and her sister, Rachelle McCabe, performing works by Chopin, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff (April 24), and violist Melia Watras sharing the stage with her colleague and former teacher, Atar Arad of Indiana University (November 5). Our entire jazz faculty go downtown on October 10 for an evening at Benaroya Hall, showcasing the incredible range of our Jazz Studies Program. The School of Music and the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media will debut an exciting new series, Music of Today, presenting groundbreaking performances by visiting artists such as Newband, featuring the Harry Partch Instrument Collection (November 7), a rare and unusual opportunity to experience the music of an innovative composer and inventor.

In addition to all of that, we proudly welcome our newest affiliate faculty member, Seattle Symphony Music Director Ludovic Morlot, to conduct our University Symphony on February 28, and we embark on the second half-century of our Ethnomusicology program with guest artist residencies by Kedmon Mapana (music of Central Tanzania), Srivani Jade (music of North India), and Thione Diope (music of Senegal, West Africa). In May, we celebrate the music of Charles Ives in a festival including performances and lectures by students, faculty, and guest speakers and performers.

These events and occasions are only a few of the highlights of our season, which promises to be among the most ambitious and eclectic we have ever presented. We invite you to investigate further, in the pages of this brochure, and in person at our performances.

Guest Artist Recitals OCT 14 (Sun) Master Class and Recital University of Texas Faculty Reed Trio

The University of Texas Faculty Reed Trio leads master classes with students from the oboe, bassoon, and clarinet studios and performs a recital of works by Mozart, Tansman, Spisak, and Villa-Lobos.

for his work with a range of top musicians, including Charlie Haden, Buddy Rich, Marvin Gaye, Frank Zappa, and the Rolling Stones. This event is part of the 2012 Earshot Jazz Festival.

In his May 2 lecture-recital, concert pianist Stuart Isacoff relates the story of the piano as it unfolded both in Europe and in a young America. Musical examples will include the first extant pieces written for the piano as well as music by C.P.E. Bach, Beethoven, Jerry Lee Lewis, Couperin, Ravel, Debussy, Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Prokofiev, Chopin, Gershwin, and others. Fifty years of Ethnomusicology The School of Music celebrates the 50th anniversary of the UW Ethnomusicology program in 2012-13 with several Visiting Artist residencies and numerous other special events. Hindustani classical singer Srivani Jade and her students present a concert of music in the North Indian classical form of Khayal, as well as traditional and folk-inspired music such as Thumri-Dadra, Tappa, and Bhajans. This concert is the culmination of Srivani Jade’s residency at the School of Music during Winter Quarter 2013.

May 21 (Tue) Ethnomusicology Visiting Artist Recital Srivani Jade and Thione Diope Music of North India and Senegal, West Africa

The Ethnomusicology program presents its annual concert of music from around the world. This concert features performances by Srivani Jade, a Hindustani singer who specializes in the North Indian classical form of Khayal, as well as other traditional and folkinspired music; and Thione Diope, a percussionist from Senegal, West Africa recognized for his powerfully expressive djembe performances.

Music of Today Newband, featuring the Harry Partch Instrument Collection, in residence Nov. 6-8, 2012 Composer Harry Partch (19011974) was an innovative theorist, inventor of musical instruments, and one of the first 20th century composers to work extensively with microtonal scales. He created dozens of incredible instruments for the performance of his musical texts and dance/theatre extravaganzas based on everything from Greek mythology to his own experiences as a hobo.

Those instruments will be prominently featured in this concert

by Newband, directed by Dean Drummond, who studied and performed with Partch, most notably on both of the composer’s 1960s Columbia Masterworks recordings.

The concert will include three masterworks by Partch—Castor and Pollux, Eleven Intrusions, and Barstow—and pieces by Drummond and by Mathew Rosenblum.

The School of Music and the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) co-curate this series featuring groundbreaking new works and modern classics performed by renowned visiting artists.

The Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media presents a concert of music by graduate Composition students Ivan Arteaga, Hector Bravo-Benard, ShihWei Lo, Stelios Manousakis, Marcin Pączkowski, and Anthony Vine.

NOV 7 (Wed) Newband, featuring the Harry Partch instrument collection

Founded in 1977 by composer Dean Drummond and flutist Stefani Starin, New Jersey-based Newband is Artist Ensemble in Residence at Montclair State University. Since 1990, when the group gained custodianship of the original Harry Partch Instrument Collection (including all of the instruments built by Partch between 1930 and 1974), Newband has been involved with resurrecting Partch’s great works while commissioning new works for this unique collection.

In this concert, Newband performs works by Partch as well as pieces by director Dean Drummond and composer Mathew Rosenblum.

This program features the U.S. premiere of Branenwelten 6, by guest composer Robert Platz, among other works.

School of Music faculty host a variety of series spotlighting performances by special guest artists, colleagues, and UW music students.

French Connections

Artist-in-Residence Barry Lieberman, artistic director and founder of The American String Project, presents a series of recitals and master classes by noted performers, including Seattle Symphony players, touring symphony musicians, young innovators, and rising classical music stars.

School of Music Professor Robin McCabe hosts this series of performances involving faculty, students and guest artists honoring the 150th anniversary of the birth of Claude Debussy. Each performance—featuring works by Debussy and composers influenced by him—is preceded by brief remarks to contextualize the repertoire performed.

Festival of Ives May 6-8, 2013

MAY 7 and 8 (Tue and Wed) Two Distinct Evenings Celebrating Ives

The University of Washington School of Music celebrates iconic American composer Charles Ives with performances of major works, lectures, lecture-recitals, and master classes, all open to the public.

Organized by Ruth Sutton Waters Endowed Professor Larry Starr of the Music History faculty, the festival will welcome distinguished guests including renowned scholar Joseph Horowitz, an authority on the history of concert music in the United States and himself an organizer of previous Ives celebration-events; baritone William Sharp, who is among the most distinguished interpreters of Ives’s remarkable song repertoire; and pianist Cristina Valdes, who will perform Ives’s extraordinary and virtuosic “Concord” Sonata for piano.

The festival gets underway on Monday, May 6, with performances of works by Charles Ives by the University Symphony, with guest soloist William Sharp. Program details for May 7 and 8 will be posted to our website at www.music.washington.edu as arrangements are finalized.

The School of Music joins forces with UW Arts units in 2012-13 for events commemorating the 100th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s seminal composition Rite of Spring.

The University Symphony, conducted by Jonathan Pasternack, performs works by Charles Ives, including Calcium Light Night and Orchestral Songs. Baritone William Sharp is a featured soloist. See page 9 for full program details.

One evening features a unique multi-media recital/ presentation, centered around the songs of Charles Ives, accompanied by readings, projections, and dramatized material illuminating Ives’s life, music, and importance. Featured guests include baritone William Sharp, scholar Joseph Horowitz, pianist Cristina Valdes, and Professor Larry Starr.

The second evening features a performance by pianist Cristina Valdes Cristina Valdes of Ives’s Piano Sonata No. 2 (“Concord”), a major virtuoso work, and selected chamber works.

Collaborations JAN 18-19 (Fri and Sat) Faculty Dance Concert In Collaboration with the Schools of Drama and Music

Faculty from the UW Dance Program and School of Music faculty blend artistry to develop a fresh take on Stravinsky’s 1913 masterwork Rite of Spring. Music is the four-hand piano version of the Rite of Spring played by two Disklavier grand pianos. Dance faculty member Jurg Koch tackles the movement themes of the individual and society, regeneration, sexuality, nature, and culture. Costuming is by UW School of Drama professor Sarah Nash Gates.

Also on the program: a new work by Dance faculty member Jennifer Salk and School of Music faculty violist Melia Watras and a re-staging of Limon’s Dances for Isadora (1971), a classic homage to the mother of modern dance in America, Isadora Duncan, performed by UW Dance students and School of Music faculty pianist Dainius Vaicekonis, directed by Brenna Monroe-Cook and Limon Company alumni.

Kari Ragan, soprano, and Rhonda Kline, pianist, take recital programming into the 21st century with “Ah! Love But a Day,” a program crossing both classical and music theatre genres. Featuring works by Bellini, Stravinsky, and Douglas Moore alongside the contemporary music theatre songs of Jason Robert Brown, Frank Wildhorn, and Stephen Sondheim, this unusual recital will showcase dramatic operatic arias such as The Rake’s Progress, The Ballad of Baby Doe, and Les Contes d’Hoffmann interwoven with music theatre songs from The Last Five Years, Into the Woods, and Cabaret.

Also on the program: Jonathan Pasternack conducts Olivier Messiaen’s, Un Sourire and performances by winners of the Nov. 19 Concerto Competition.

Jazz Innovations Jazz Clinic Student jazz ensembles pay homage Ernie Watts to the icons of jazz with new arrangements of the classics and break new ground with original progressive jazz compositions.

The School of Music and Earshot Jazz present a clinic

by Grammy winning saxophonist Ernie Watts, known for his work with a range of top musicians, including Charlie Haden, Buddy Rich, Marvin Gaye, Frank Zappa, and the Rolling Stones. Watts also played tenor saxophone for 20 years as a member of the Tonight Show band under leader Doc Severinsen and performed on movie soundtracks for Grease and The Color Purple, among others. This event is part of the 2012 Earshot Jazz Festival.

The faculty musicians of the Jazz Studies Program go downtown for a concert at Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall. Sets by the Fred Radke Quintet, Michael Brockman, Tom Collier, Marc Seales, and the Cuong Vu Quartet will be followed by a group finale. This performance includes a special appearance by drummer Ted Poor, artist-in-residence at the School of Music during Fall Quarter 2012.

Meany Hall’s main entrance leads directly into Meany Theater. Enter Meany Studio Theater by taking the outside stairs at the northeast corner of Meany Hall to the sunken courtyard.

Disability access There is a ramp at the west (main) entrance as well as access at the School of Music’s northeast entrance.

Location The Walker-Ames Room is on the second floor of Kane Hall, in the northeast corner of the UW’s Central Plaza (“Red Square”).

Disability access An elevator from the UW Central Plaza Garage goes to the first and second floors of Kane Hall, and a ramp provides access at the east entrance to the Walker-Ames Room.

Notecards Great Live Music, Great Low Price The School of Music Notecard is a season pass to nearly all of the concerts presented by the UW School of Music in Meany Theater, Meany Studio Theater, Brechemin Auditorium, the WalkerAmes Room, and the Jones Playhouse.

Notecard prices for the 2012-13 season are $90 for the general public, $75 for UW employees and UW Alumni Association members, and $60 for students and seniors. With more than 80 Notecard concerts this season, it doesn’t take many to cover the cost of your pass!

A School of Music Notecard is convenient. You don’t need to get tickets in advance — just present your Notecard at the door of the theater at least 20 minutes before the event begins and you will be admitted on a seat-available basis. * Be sure to allow plenty of time for parking and getting to the concert location. Seating for Notecard events is not reserved and not guaranteed, so the earlier you arrive, the better your chance of getting a seat.

Notecards are not transferable, refundable, or replaceable. Please keep yours in a safe place.
