Senior Companion Program
Forthepastnineyears,Earnestine hasbeenasteadyand compassionatepresenceinthelife ofMr.Barber,anelderlymanwhois blindandlivesalonewithlittle familysupportnearby.Throughthe SeniorCompanionProgram,what beganasavolunteerassignment quicklyevolvedintosomething muchdeeper agenuine,lifechangingfriendship.
Atfirst,Earnestineprovided essential,practicalsupport.She accompaniedMr.Barbertomedical appointments,helpedwithgrocery shopping,andranerrands,tasks thathadbecomedauntingand overwhelmingforhimtomanage alone.Overtime,theseregular outingsbecamemorethanroutine, theybecamemomentsof connection.Whatoncefeltlike choresbecameopportunitiesfor laughterandreflection.
Earnestinedidn’tjusthelpMr. Barberlivemoreindependently shehelpedrestorehissenseof hopeandconfidence.Shebecam aconfidant,asourceof encouragement,and,inMr.Barb words,“abeaconoflight”during someofhismostisolatedyears.
Camwasjusta5thgraderwhen OpportunityTribe’sFunClubsfirst aunchedeightyearsago Atthe ime,hisprincipalrecognizedboth hisstruggleswithreadingandhis untappedpotential,andinvitedhim ojointheprogram Through engagingliteracyactivities, mentorship,andasupportive environment,Cambegantogain confidence notjustinreading,but inhimself Moreimportantly,he foundasenseofbelonging
Fastforwardto2024:Camhas graduatedfromhighschoolandis nowthrivingasascholarship studentatUTPB,fullyembracing campuslife Reflectingonhis journeyduringagraduation interview,Camshared,“Iwouldn't sayIwasreallylookingforafamily, butIgainedone Noonewould everimaginethatsomethingyou're badat,likereading,couldbring somethingsoglorious!”
ForCam,FunClubmarkedthestart ofalifelongconnectionwithhis OpportunityTribefamily.That connectioncamefullcirclelast summerwhenhereturnedasan intern,eagertogivebackand inspirethenextgeneration.
Equine/Hippotherpy Program
Justsixmonthsago,athree-year-old boydiagnosedwithAutism SpectrumDisorder(ASD)began receivingservicesatMCRC.He initiallystruggledwithsocial interaction,transitions,andoverall engagementinactivities. Everythingbegantochangewhen hisOccupationalTherapist introducedHippotherapyintohis treatmentplan.Injusttwomonths, thetransformationwasremarkable. Transitionsthatoncecausedstress becamesmoothandseamless Oncewithdrawn,hebeganchatting eagerlywithstaffandsidewalkers, arrivingexcitedandreadyto participateineverysession.His physicalprogresswasjustas impressive hisbalanceandcore strengthimprovedsignificantly, allowinghimtotoleraterear-facing andside-sittingpositionsonthe horse,somethinghecouldn’t managebefore.
Perhapsmostheartwarmingisthe emotionalgrowth.Hismomhas beenoverjoyedtoseeherson’s confidenceflourishJustthisweek, heproudlytoldhisOT,“Ican’twait toridemyhorse!”

69volunteerssupportedtheinitiative
UnitedWayofMidland’sProjectBlueprintisapremierboardleadershipprogram dedicatedtofosteringexcellenceandinclusioninnonprofitgovernance.The programensuresthatMidland’snonprofitsectorreflectsthediversevoicesand talentsofourcommunity.
Thisyear’scohortbenefitedfromexpert-ledsessions,hands-onmentorship,and meaningfulengagementwithlocalnonprofits.Scholarsalsogainedfirsthand leadershipexperiencethroughvisitstotheMidlandCityCouncil,MISDSchoolBoard, andMidlandCountyCommissionersCourt.Theprogramculminatedinthe3rd AnnualBoardFair,wherescholarsconnectedwith13organizationsforpotential boardservice,followedbyagraduationceremonyhonoringtheirachievements

TheninedistrictawardsincludedElementaryTeacheroftheYear, SecondaryTeacheroftheYear,UnsungHero,RookieTeacherofthe Year,VeteranTeacheroftheYear,CampusoftheYear,andafew specialityawards
InSeptember,UnitedWayofMidlandhosteditsfirst"WeekofCaring"Food Drive.Throughouttheweek,communitymemberswereencouragedtodonate foodatvariousdrop-offlocationsacrossMidlandInaddition,severallocal businessesjoinedtheeffort,hostingtheirowncollectioneventsOver3,000 non-perishablefooditems(1,300pounds)and$2,500weredonatedtobe distributedacross9localfoodpantries,ensuringthatitreachesfamiliesin needthroughoutourcommunity!

TheExecutiveDirector(ED)Seriesisapremiertrainingprogramdesignedto empowernon-profitleaderswiththeknowledge,skills,andstrategiesneeded todrivemeaningfulimpactFacilitatedbytheUnitedWayofMidlandand generouslysponsoredbytheBryantFamilyFoundation,thiscomprehensive professionaldevelopmentinitiativesupportsleaderswithintheUWMservice area,equippingthemtostrengthentheirorganizationsandadvancetheir missions
In2024,theEDSeriesservedapproximately65+non-profitleaders representingover20+non-profitagencies,fosteringcollaboration,growth, andlong-termsustainabilityacrossthesector.
InNovember,theUnitedWayofMidland’sCommunityImpactCoalition andSeniorLifeMidlandco-hostedanIntellectualandDevelopmental Disabilities(IDD)trainingforfirstrespondersandcommunitymembers. Withapproximately100attendees,thetrainingfeaturedexpert speakerSteveSlack,anationallyrecognizedadvocateandinstructorat WestVirginiaUniversity’sCountryRoadsprogram. SpecialprogramssuchasTheRollingBaristas,FriendshipHouse,and MISD’sEncoreAcademyplayedakeyroleinsupportingtheevent. Attendeesengagedinmeaningfuldiscussions,enhancingtheir understandingoftheskillsandtalentswithintheIDDcommunity
