Course Descriptions Business Research in Industry GBUS-7100 (3) Seminar / Discussion This course provides students with essential skills for conducting applied research in collaboration with industry partners. It addresses qualitative and quantitative research methods, ethical considerations in organizational data management, and the development of consulting style reports, presentations, and executive summaries. The course also emphasizes academic integrity and introduces responsible AI practices in business research. In the first half of the course, students acquire foundational methods, tools, and best practices, which they apply through case studies, presentations, and small scale research projects in the latter half of the course. Restriction: Students may not hold credit for both this course and GBUS-7110.
Leadership and Innovation GBUS-7120 (3) Seminar / Discussion Leadership and Innovation introduces students to the complexities of managing organizations during times of change. The ability of leaders to systematically encourage and enhance an organization’s human capital—to transform institutional knowledge into innovative products, services, and systems, and to use technology appropriately—is key to developing a sustainable, innovative organization. Students are introduced to the elements and attributes of innovation and change processes, as well as the types of leadership required to facilitate them. Students are expected to critically analyze academic papers and cases, discuss leadership across different organizational contexts, and examine the leadership implications of increased innovation, technological change, and operational transformation.
Introduction to Technology, Innovation and Operations Management GBUS-7200 (3) Lecture Through case studies, critical reviews of research papers, readings, student presentations, and group activities, this course equips students with core concepts in technology innovation and operations management. Topics include the foundations of technological innovation, an in‑depth understanding of how and why innovations occur, and why some innovations come to dominate others. The course also introduces students to issues in the design, planning, control, and improvement of manufacturing and service operations, preparing them for leadership roles in technology, innovation, and operations management. Requisite Courses: GBUS‑7100 and GBUS‑7120 with a minimum grade of B in each.
Business Strategy GBUS-7210 (3) Lecture This course introduces the tools used to assess strategy and the process of strategic management from the perspective of senior management. Students are provided with frameworks to diagnose and solve critical organizational problems using cases, exercises, discussions, and simulations across all functional areas. While the course emphasizes the senior management perspective, functional specialists are expected to understand the organization as a whole and how their roles contribute to organizational mission and objectives. Particular attention is given to the importance of technology and innovation in strategic decision‑making. Requisite Courses: GBUS‑7100 and GBUS‑7120 with a minimum grade of B in each.
Project Management GBUS-7220 (3) Lecture This course develops the knowledge and skills required to effectively manage workplace projects. Students learn the value of formal project management processes, as well as the roles and responsibilities of project managers. Best practices across all stages of the project management cycle are examined, including needs assessment, project selection and bidding, planning, budgeting and scheduling, implementation and communication, and project evaluation. These phases are explored in the context of ensuring strategic alignment and fostering innovation. Students also apply project management tools through case studies and applied projects. Requisite Courses: GBUS‑7100 and GBUS‑7120 with a minimum grade of B in each.
Descriptive Analytics GBUS-7225 (3) Seminar / Discussion This course introduces students to business analytics by providing an overview of descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics, with a detailed focus on descriptive analytics. Topics include big data, data visualization, descriptive data collection, random variables, probability theory, and business reporting. The course emphasizes experiential learning. Students: Conduct case analyses based on real organizations Gain hands‑on experience using descriptive analytics tools and software Participate in an integrative simulation that synthesizes course concepts into a final assignment
Strategies in Operations and Supply Chain Management GBUS-7230 (3) Lecture This course develops a framework that enables students to deepen their understanding of the linkages between operations, supply chains, and firms’ strategic market positioning. Students gain insight into how business processes shape operational functions and supply chain strategies, and how these contribute to competitive advantage. Emphasis is placed on concepts and tools fundamental to operations and supply chain management. Requisite Courses: GBUS‑7200 with a minimum grade of B.
Advanced Prescriptive Analytics GBUS-7235 (3) Seminar / Discussion This course enables students to develop skills in modeling, analyzing, and improving business processes and operational systems using simulation techniques and optimization models. The course centers on discrete‑event simulation, a powerful method for analyzing complex systems characterized by uncertainty and time dynamics. Students gain hands‑on experience transforming real‑world operational problems into quantitative models and generating reliable analytical results. Requisite Courses: GBUS‑7225 with a minimum grade of B.
Information Systems and Knowledge Management GBUS‑7240 (3) Lecture This course develops students’ analytical abilities to address issues related to information systems and knowledge management within organizations. Students examine the development, control, and management of organizational information and knowledge assets. Topics in information systems include IT governance, strategic capabilities of information systems, business process re‑engineering, system security, business continuity, and enterprise resource planning (ERP). In knowledge management, students learn strategies for managing individual, group, and organizational knowledge assets. Requisite Courses: GBUS‑7100 and GBUS-7120 with a minimum grade of B in each.
Strategic Management Accounting GBUS‑7250 (3) Lecture This course develops analytical skills related to financial decision‑making within organizations. Emphasis is placed on the role of accounting in planning, control, performance evaluation, and risk management. Topics include management control systems, decentralization, activity‑based costing, strategy mapping, balanced scorecards, value chain analysis, and strategic cost and profitability analysis.

Innovation Management GBUS-7260 (3) Lecture This course provides an understanding of the key concepts of technology and innovation, their relationship with the organizational environment, and their impact on management and organizations. Multivariate Data Analysis GBUS-7265 (3) Seminar / Discussion This course examines advanced applications of major multivariate data analysis techniques. Emphasis is placed on terminology, concepts, procedures, and statistical techniques used in data processing, analysis, and interpretation. All major techniques are illustrated through practical applications in business research and decision‑making contexts. Requisite Courses: GBUS-7225 with a minimum grade of B.
MiM Directed Readings GBUS‑7270 (3) Directed Readings This graduate-level elective course offers MiM students the opportunity to pursue independent and specialized study in areas such as management, innovation, technology, operations, or data analytics. The topic and course requirements are determined jointly by the student and the mentor and must be formally approved by the MiM Graduate Program Committee prior to enrolment. Directed Readings are conducted in a one-to-one format between the student and a faculty mentor. Requisite Courses: GBUS‑7100 and GBUS-7120 with a minimum grade of B in each.
Advanced Predictive Analysis GBUS‑7275 (3) Seminar / Discussion This course introduces the fundamentals of predictive algorithms and their application in business operations. Students learn how predictive tools function, how to deploy them effectively, and how to generate accurate forecasts. Emphasis is placed on identifying patterns in historical data and implementing predictive algorithms using R programming in realistic business environments. Graduate Capstone Course GBUS-7320 (3) Seminar / Discussion This course requires students to integrate theoretical concepts, principles, and applications from across the MiM program. Students demonstrate accumulated knowledge and skills through case analysis and a comprehensive final report submitted in written form and presented orally. Post-Graduate Work Permit International students wishing to qualify for post graduate work permits (PGWP) must complete more than 50% of their courses on campus taking in-person courses (as opposed to online) and must be enrolled as full-time students. There are sufficient courses offered in both specializations to meet this requirement. Frequently Asked Questions I) Program Q: When does the program start and how long is it? A: We offer one intake per year in August. Full-time students complete the program within 17 months, part-time students in 28 months.
Q: Do I have to attend the bootcamp in-person? A: Yes, attendance of the bootcamp at the beginning of the program is mandatory. This intensive bootcamp is 2 weeks long.
Q: Can I take the Master in Management online? A: Except for the bootcamp, the TIO stream can be taken online. Please note that exams may require in person attendance.
Q: I’m working. Can I still take this program? A: Absolutely. The program was designed with working professionals in mind. All our classes are either online or in-person evening classes.
Q: How many classes do I take per term? A: Full-time students take 2 courses per term and 2 courses in the bootcamp for a total of 10 classes.
Q: Is the program considered full-time for student loan and immigration purposes? A: Yes, it is! The MiM program considers 6 credit hours/term to be full-time.
Q: Does it qualify for a PGWP? A: Yes, it qualifies for a PGWP of up to 3 years.
Q: Can my spouse get an open work permit? A: Yes, MiM qualifies for an open spousal work permit.
Q: Do you offer a Co-op or internship program? A: Co-op and internship options are currently not available to MiM students; however, we will contact you with industry partners throughout your studies (networking nights, industry tours, career fairs etc.).
Q: Are there any designated breaks during the program? A: Because of the intensive nature of the program, there are no extended breaks except for short breaks in December, April and July.
II) Admission Requirements Q: What are the general admission requirements? A: Applicants should have an Honours, 4-Year, or equivalent baccalaureate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and an overall GPA of 3.0/4.5 (B) in order to be considered for admission to Graduate Studies.

Q: Do I need to have work experience? A: Yes, we require a minimum of 2 years in a managerial or leadership position.
Q: What are your English language requirements? A: Citizens of specific countries are exempt from the English language requirements. You can find the complete list of exemptions and requirements here: https://www.uwinnipeg.ca/future-student/docs/english-languagerequirements-policy.pdf Q: The mode of instruction at my university was English. Can I be exempt? A: We do not make any exceptions for studies completed at an English-speaking institution.
Q: How do you assess my application? A: Our committee will assess applications based on academic history, work experience, other relevant skills and general fit for the program.
Q: Can I send you my resume and transcripts beforehand to see if I’m eligible? A: No, our committee will only assess complete application packages received through the application portal.
Q: What documents do I need to apply? A: You will need to submit the following documents: Copies of all post-secondary transcripts Statement of intent Writing sample References English language requirements (if applicable) Identification/copy of PR card (if applicable) For more information, please contact graduateadmissions@uwinnipeg.ca.
Q: I haven’t attended university in years and do not have writing samples or academic references. A: If you have been out of university for some time and no longer have access to academic references and writing samples, you can also submit your statement of why you want to attend the program. If you wrote a formal report in your work or for your academic program, you could take an extract as an example of your writing skills. References do not have to be academic but can come from supervisors and colleagues who are familiar with your work and work ethic.
Q: When can I apply? A: Applications are open from November 1 to February 1 of every year for the August intake.
Q: The application portal is closed. Can I still apply? A: Due to increased visa processing times, we generally only accept late applications from students currently legally residing in Canada (work permit, PR, Canadian). You cannot apply while the portal is closed.
Q: Can the application fee be waived? A: We only offer application fee waivers under very specific circumstances (e.g. applicants who are re-applying due to visa delays). Due to the administrative efforts involved in assessing every application, the fee ensures that applicants are in fact serious about attending The University of Winnipeg.
III) Fees Q: Do I have to pay a deposit? A: International students will have to pay a $1000 deposit upon acceptance of their offer. The deposit will be applied to the first tuition payment in August and is refundable in case your visa is denied.
Q: Do I have to pay all my tuition at once? A: Full time students pay their tuition is paid in 5 installments: August, September, January, May, September.
Q: What if I like to pay all my fees at once? A: Some of our applicants like to pay the entire amount upfront. Please refer to “How do I make payments” for accepted payment methods.

III) Enrollment Changes Q: Can I change my stream? A: Stream changes will have to be approved by the committee and are generally not advisable after the bootcamp. Please direct your request in writing to mimchair@uwinnipg.ca
Q: I was accepted but I would like to defer to next year. A: Please send an email before July 15 to mim@uwinnipeg.ca, outlining your reasons for the deferral request. Every student can only ask for one deferral and approval is not guaranteed. Students will be notified at the end of July.
Q: What if I need to take a break? A: Students who wish to take a break from the program should consult with the program (mim@uwinnipeg.ca) and must apply for a Leave of Absence (LOA). IV) Minimum Performance Standards Q: Do I have to maintain a minimum GPA? A: Yes, you must maintain a “B” (3.0 GPA) average.
Q: I received a final grade lower than a “B”. What happens now? A: Students who receive one course grade of C+ normally will be placed on probationary status. If you receive a grade of C or lower, you will be involuntarily removed from the program. You will receive an official letter from the Graduate Studies department informing you about your probationary status or involuntary withdrawal. Q: What does “probation” mean? A: Probation means that if you receive a second grade of C+ or lower, you will be removed from the program. V) Academic Standards Q: What does “Academic Misconduct” mean? A: Academic misconduct include plagiarism, cheating and the unauthorized use of AI tools. More explanation can be found here: https://library.uwinnipeg.ca/borrowing-and-services/help-with-research/chatgptand-genai.html
Q: Am I allowed to use AI? A: Students should consult the course outline of every course and discuss the appropriate use of AI tools with their instructors.
VI) Appeals Q: I don’t agree with the marks or grade received in a course. What should I do about it? A: Students are encouraged to confer with their instructors first. If further resolution is required, students can file an appeal. Please contact the program at mim@uwinnipeg.ca to discuss your options.
