Greetings from Dr. Annette Trimbee President & Vice Chancellor On behalf of our executive team, faculty and staff, welcome to The University of Winnipeg.

Your education here will leave you well versed in complex ideas, with an ability to critically assess and synthesize information. You will learn how to make better decisions and find creative solutions to challenges. These are skills that you will use in all facets of your life.

Our programs are intentionally interdisciplinary and I invite you to go outside your comfort zone and take a class in the humanities, in theatre, in business, or in the sciences. This is your time to stretch your mind and widen your horizons.

Connect and collaborate with others. I would urge you to consider joining a student group: there are more than 50 on campus to match your interests. Your ability to work with a wide variety of people will strengthen your leadership skills, and you will have a lot of fun.

The University of Winnipeg Academic Calendar The Academic Calendar is the source of all university regulations and requirements.

If you are wondering what courses to take for your degree, the calendar will provide you with all you need to know. It is available on the UWinnipeg website and the hard copy version can be purchased at Student Central.

Calendar Tips—Know the University of Winnipeg dates and deadlines including the last dates to drop courses and obtain refunds. (See Important Dates in this Resource Guide.) Set reminders in your calendar for your assignments and exams so you always know when things are due and you can avoid cramming for exams and staying up all night writing papers.

Career Services Career Service offers an array of services for students attending The University of Winnipeg, including career planning, job search strategies, feedback on resumes and cover letters, and interview skills preparation as well as an annual Career Fair. Students can utilize their services at any point during their education. Call for an appointment.

Counselling centre Personal counselling is available to any student currently registered at The University of Winnipeg in an undergraduate or graduate program. Counselling at UWinnipeg is a collaborative, conversational process where students can address any concern, difficulty, or dilemma. Services are free of charge and confidential. Counselling services also collaborates with others on campus to work toward positive mental health, wellness and resiliency of the campus community and oversees the Health and Wellness Peer Educators.

Diversity Food Services Diversity Food Services is our campus food service provider. They operate four restaurants and cafeterias on campus and their priority is to provide excellent food services to the students and staff of The University of Winnipeg and the surrounding community through a dynamic social enterprise. Their goals and objectives include offering wholesome, fairly priced, ethnically diverse food options; creating an attractive menu; and providing excellent customer service. The four restaurants they operate are : Pangea’s Kitchen, Café Bodhi, Elements Restaurant and The MALECÓN.

Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing have access to American Sign Language-English interpreting or transcribing (computerized note-taking) services for classroom lectures, labs, course related activities, student/professor meetings, and University sponsored activities.

Emergency Communications During an emergency on campus such as a power outage, blizzard, campus closure, fire or threat of any kind, we will post instructions on what you need to know using Twitter and Facebook and on our website. The Global Welcome Centre (GWC) The Global Welcome Centre provides academic programs and services to help newcomers to Canada succeed in post-secondary education. GWC offers a resource centre and computer lounge, and provides a range of workshops, classes and services to permanent residents.

Security Services Security Services provides a safe, secure learning, living and working environment for University students, faculty, staff and visitors. It offers the SafeWalk and SafeRide programs during the Fall and Winter Terms to escort students to their bus stop, car or home within a one-block radius of The University of Winnipeg.

Sexual Misconduct Response Team Sexual misconduct is a broad term used to encompass unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature including sexual assault and the threat of sexual assault, stalking, and sexual harassment.

University of Winnipeg students who have experienced sexual misconduct can call a 24-hour phone line to receive support from the Sexual Misconduct Response Team (SMRT).

SMRT connects students with resources to help with immediate concerns as well as refer them to ongoing counselling, academic or other campus supports.

Academic Concerns—We are here to help!

If you are taking a little longer to adjust to university studies than you expected, if your marks are not what you had hoped they would be, or if you are falling behind in your work, talk to your professor and/or meet with an Academic Advisor right away.

They can help you to problem solve and consider your options. Always address issues and concerns with your classes as soon as possible since academic terms go by very quickly and taking action right away can solve issues before they get too large.

Study Skills Workshops Study Skills workshops (Study Smart) provide advice and tips on essential study skills, such as note-taking, time management and reading strategies. Finding Information on the UWinnipeg Website If you are not sure where to find student-related information on the University’s website, go to uwinnipeg.ca and in the upper left hand corner, you will see a link called “Student”. Click on that link to find a comprehensive listing of resources for students.

Technology on Campus UW-Wireless Network—To find the encryption key (password), log in to WebAdvisor and click on Current Student. Look at the bottom of the right-hand column, under “My User Account,” to locate the password. Detailed instructions can be found here: uwinnipeg.ca/uw-wireless Printing and Photocopying—Printers and copiers, as well as pay stations, are available in the Library and the Uplink Computer Common (4th floor, Centennial Hall). Check your University Webmail for an email from the University with your Equitrac printing password. Your printing ID is your student number.

Computers on campus—Computers are located in the Library and Uplink Computer Common. In order to log in to any of the student computers on campus, you need to first activate or “claim” your University labs account. Go to myidm.uwinnipeg.ca to set up your account.

You will need your WebAdvisor user ID and password.

Detailed instructions are at uwinnipeg.ca/claim-id-process Nexus—To access your course materials online (handouts, assignments, etc.), go to nexus.uwinnipeg.ca and log in with your WebAdvisor user ID and password.

Note: Not all courses are hosted on nexus, so check your course outlines or ask your instructors.

Webmail—Check your University Webmail account regularly. This is the way that the University will notify you about important information, such as openings on wait lists, new sections/labs, cancellations or other changes to courses.

Moving? Keep us up-to-date!—Use WebAdvisor to make any changes to your address, phone numbers or personal email address. Log in to WebAdvisor, select Current Students, and then under Academic Profile, select Address Change.

Forgot your WebAdvisor user ID or password?—Click on LOG IN at the top of WebAdvisor, select What’s My User ID? or Forgot My Password, and follow the prompts.

You’ll be asked for your seven-digit student number.

Tips for your first year Find your balance Create a balance between academics and your personal life. Join a club or group and check out the University cultural and artistic life. Attend the Volunteer Fair in September to find an organization with which you may want to be involved. Check out The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA). Strike up a conversation with the person who sits next to you. In whatever way works for you, make connections with your peers.

All new students want to meet other students.

Take Care of Yourself Take care of your physical and mental health. You need to be healthy and energized to be productive and successful in your studies. Go to the gym.

Get some sleep. Build and maintain a support system. If you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to ask for help. See the list of services which can support you in this Resource Guide.

ParticipatE in Class Become engaged with your lecture material by getting involved in class discussions and joining or creating a study group. Prepare for each class by reviewing your previous lecture notes and by reading ahead in your textbook. Get to know your professors. They are real people who are interested in your learning and want to help you.
