LET’S CONTINUE TO BE THE GENERATION THAT INVESTS IN SOLUTIONS, CHAMPIONS EQUITY, AND BELIEVES IN THE POWER OF “WE.” - Jennifer Thompson, Chief Executive Officer
Letter from OUR CEO Dear Friends and Neighbors, This year marks a milestone that is both humbling and inspiring—United Way of Hunterdon County’s 40th anniversary. For four decades, our community has shown up for one another, proving time and again that when we are united, we are stronger. From the early days of grassroots campaigns to today’s innovative, collaborative programs, our mission has remained steadfast: to ensure that every person in Hunterdon has the opportunity to thrive. Our county is known for its natural beauty, rich history, and deep sense of connection. But the true legacy of Hunterdon lies in its people—the volunteers who give their time without hesitation, the donors who invest in their neighbors, and the partners who join us in building solutions to our community’s greatest challenges. Over the past 40 years, together we have tackled hunger, supported education, expanded access to healthcare, and created pathways for financial stability. As we celebrate this remarkable history, we also look ahead. On October 8th, 2025 we will gather for our 40th Anniversary Celebration—a night to honor our past, recognize the people who have shaped our journey, and share our bold vision for the next 40 years. This is more than a party; it’s a moment to recommit to building a community where every child, family, and senior can live with dignity, opportunity, and hope. I invite you to join us—not just for the celebration, but for the future we will build together. Let’s continue to be the generation that invests in solutions, champions equity, and believes in the power of “we.” The past 40 years have proven what is possible; the next 40 will define what is to come. With gratitude and anticipation, Jennifer Thompson, MSW Chief Executive Officer

ALICE IN HUNTERDON COUNTY
Our Neighbors, Our Community
In Hunterdon County, 26% of households are ALICE —Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. ALICE isn’t “other.” ALICE is us. They are our neighbors, friends, parents, and coworkers—hardworking individuals and families who make meaningful contributions to our community but struggle to make ends meet. From the county seat of Flemington to the most rural corners of Hunterdon, ALICE is woven into the fabric of daily life. They are childcare providers, healthcare workers, firefighters, farmers, bus drivers, and shopkeepers. They support our community’s infrastructure, often while balancing difficult financial trade-offs like which bills to pay or which prescriptions to fill.
ALICE HOUSEHOLDS WITHOUT CHILDREN Nearly 38% of ALICE households in Hunterdon are adults between 18– 64 years old without children. These young adults and middle-aged workers are striving to build lives here, contributing to our workforce and economy, while still facing financial constraints.
UNITED WAY Hunterdon County
ALICE OVER 65 A significant portion—44%—of Hunterdon’s ALICE population is over the age of 65. These are seniors aging in place, new retirees, and loved ones now living on fixed incomes. They are the parents and grandparents who built our community, yet they face tough financial realities in their later years.
ALICE FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN
ALICE IS DIVERSE
Although smaller in Hunterdon compared to other areas of New Jersey, about 9% of our ALICE households are married with children. These are the parents you see at school pickup and on playdates—young families planting roots in our towns, working hard to create stability for their children.
ALICE reflects the full diversity of our county. They live on Main Street and in farming communities. They are of different races, backgrounds, and faiths, yet share the common challenge of making ends meet in a county with a high cost of living.
WHY ALICE MATTERS ALICE is not invisible—they are the people who make our community thrive. They are the caregivers, educators, and essential workers who keep Hunterdon strong. Yet, despite working hard, ALICE families often fall short of covering basic needs. While safety net supports exist, gaps remain. That’s where United Way steps in—helping to bridge those gaps and ensure ALICE can thrive right here at home.
The message is clear: ALICE is not “other.” ALICE is us. And when ALICE succeeds, Hunterdon County succeeds.

PROGRAMS BOARD TRAINING
Building Stronger Boards, Stronger Communities United Way of Hunterdon County’s Nonprofit Board of Directors Certificate Program Our Board of Directors Certificate Program equips current and aspiring nonprofit board members with the knowledge and skills to serve effectively. From understanding fiduciary responsibilities and strategic planning to navigating fundraising and advocacy, the program demystifies the role of a board member and helps participants step into leadership with clarity and purpose. Why is this important? Many passionate community members want to serve but feel uncertain about where to start—or how to best contribute. At the same time, nonprofits often struggle to recruit qualified, engaged board members who understand the scope of their role. United Way’s program bridges this gap, preparing leaders and matching graduates with nonprofits actively seeking board members. The result: stronger governance, more effective volunteer leadership, and nonprofits that can focus more energy on mission delivery rather than board recruitment and training. “This program gives people the confidence to serve and nonprofits the assurance that their board members are prepared for the work ahead,” says Jennifer Thompson, Chief Executive Officer, United Way of Hunterdon County. “When our boards are confident and prepared, our whole community is stronger.”
Who Should Participate?

HOLIDAY HANDS
SPREADING JOY THIS SEASON
Volunteer Opportunities
As the holidays approach, United Way of Hunterdon County is proud to launch Holiday Hands—a cherished program that helps more than 2,500 adults and children in our community celebrate with dignity, joy, and hope. Thanks to generous donations of gifts Holiday Hands eases financial pressures for ALICE families.
How It Works Each fall, United Way collaborates with the Hunterdon County Division of Social Services and other local agencies to identify families and individuals most in need of holiday assistance. After applications are submitted and processed, gift requests are shared with community donors who purchase items throughout November and early December. Gifts are then distributed at our Volunteer Center, ensuring every client is welcomed with compassion and treated with dignity. In a typical year, Holiday Hands provides more than $50 in gifts per person, creating brighter holidays for thousands of neighbors while fostering stability for families under financial strain.
Holiday Hands relies on volunteers to enhance the season. Opportunities include: Greeting clients and assisting with applications Processing forms and data entry Scheduling appointments and translating applications Shopping registries and organizing the Holiday Hands store Guiding clients during gift pick-up Decorating the store at the Volunteer Center Volunteers of all backgrounds—students, retirees, families, youth groups, or company teams—can sign up for shifts in October, November, and December.

From back-to-school events to leadership training, from youth wellness to groundbreaking mental health programs, our work is powered by partnerships, volunteers, and neighbors who believe in making a difference. Here are just a few highlights of how we’ve been United in Action this season:

Start School Strong Events
Nonprofit Board Leadership Program
This summer, families across Hunterdon County came together to kick off the school year with joy and connection. At our Start School Strong events, children received free backpacks and school supplies sponsored by ExxonMobil, enjoyed delicious food from Viva Mexico Restaurant, and joined in fun activities with Chick-fil-A Flemington and other local partners. Together, we built community, shared resources, and set kids up for success in the year ahead.
Strong communities require strong leaders, which is why we created Mission Control, a nonprofit board leadership program for volunteers. Participants receive training and resources, while nonprofits benefit from a database of credentialed leaders. Mission Control provides templates for success and strategic planning support, enabling organizations and their leaders to thrive. Courses are available in-person and online for those interested in joining a board or earning a certificate.
Children’s Yoga at DIY Flemington
United in Play: Behind the Scenes
Wellness starts young! Local kids had the opportunity to participate in a children’s yoga class at DIY Flemington, learning mindfulness, movement, and healthy habits in a fun, supportive environment. Programs like these help youth build resilience and confidence while connecting families to community resources.
Lights, camera, action! We recently filmed new educational videos for United in Play, the first-of-its-kind program addressing youth mental health through sports. This initiative removes financial barriers to play, trains coaches in mental health first aid, and creates kid-driven content on nutrition, mindfulness, and more
A big thank you to our partners—America’s Grow-a-Row, NJ4S Somerset/Hunterdon/Warren Counties, Getting Your Mind in Gear, HBA Basketball, and DVRR Jr. Terriers—for helping us bring this vision to life!

Jesse’s journey with United Way began years ago through a workplace charity campaign. Inspired to deepen his involvement, Jesse stepped into a leadership role on our Board of Directors, bringing both his passion and perspective to guide our work forward.
