Welcome! I’m Colin, your Students’ Union President and chair of the UWESU Executive Committee for 2011/12. It’s a privilege to have been elected to represent the 30,000 students here at UWE. It’s my job to ensure that your views, opinions and experiences are represented to the University to guarantee a great student experience.

As your representative voice for UWE students I’ll be seeking your feedback on issues throughout the year, fighting to ensure that students get the best deal possible at UWE and making certain that your student experience is catered to you. Since 1971 UWESU has been serving and representing it’s members. UWESU has listened to it’s members and worked hard to implement many changes and developments throughout these 40 years and therefore is very proud to celebrate it’s 40th Anniversary with it’s current members!

Elections Members of the Students’ Union annually elect an Executive to represent the views of UWE students nationally and locally.

The Executive is made up of 5 full time positions and 9 voluntary positions. The Executive influence the direction of your Students’ Union and University and is a great way of being involved in making decisions that impact on your student experience. The elections take place in March when you will see all the candidates out campaigning for your vote. Who are the Reps?

Anyone can be a Student Rep! Reps for each course and level will be elected in the first few weeks of term. If you don’t know who is arranging this, ask a module or programme leader, or contact us at the email address below.

If you are interested in becoming a Student Rep you will receive training and support from the Students’ Union and will be able to get involved with lots of different aspects of the Union. So get in touch and we will tell you all the benefits of being involved!

What Do Student Reps Do? • Student Reps are your link to feeding back on your student experience to the University & Students’ Union.

• There are Student Reps elected for every level to represent your course and discuss issues with the Faculty staff.

UWESU Volunteering specialises in offering individuals, clubs, societies and networks the opportunity to set up projects, campaigns and events to benefit the local community. As long as it is led by students, we will help you along the way, and even give you the opportunity to apply for up to £100 to kick-start your idea. We also run one-off volunteering days in the local community including the Big Beach Clean and conservation projects. Hi I’m Olly Reid, your Vice President Education. As VP Education it is my role to support students and take the issues that students are facing as well as your ideas and suggestions to the University. I will be working with Terri Hammond, the Education Officer, to represent students on education issues, but we can’t do this without knowing what your issues and ideas are. We use the feedback you give to your Student Reps to influence the decisions the University makes and to shape the projects we take on over the year. Raise and Give (RAG) puts the FUN back into FUNDRAISING!

Fundraising

If you think you’d like to get involved in something fun for a good cause look no further than RAG. It is your opportunity to be part of a national network of students raising thousands of pounds for charity every year.

RAG is run by students like you and supported by UWESU staff. The RAG committee is looking for new members and your fundraising ideas to raise money! RAG support 4 charities each year but you can raise money for any charity of your choice.

Throughout the year RAG holds events such as bar crawls, speed dating, pub quizzes, city centre collections and raffles to raise funds. In 2010-11 students have put on events for St Mungos, Sparks, Teenage Cancer Trust, Terrence Higgins Trust, Heartful Dodgers, Coppafeel, Comic Relief, Read International and more! Sports clubs and society members have been successful in raising funds for their activities through events.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved throughout the year. Be involved in making UWE RAG bigger and better than ever before!

HALLS REPS Every year the Students’ Union, in conjunction with the University, facilitates the formal Halls Representative system in the Student Village and various other UWE managed accommodation across the city. These Halls Reps are your link to feeding back on the student experiences in the residences to the University, so whether they are accommodation issues, student campaigns ideas or social/sporting activities don’t forget that your Halls Rep is there to help!

Halls Reps are recruited at the beginning of the academic year so if you are interested in playing a bigger part in the UWE Community keep your eye out for more information during accomodation talks.

Hub Radio Heya! My name is Safi and I am your Societies and Communications Vice-President for this year. My job is to look after all of the societies by managing their budgets and supporting them in any events, fundraising and ideas that they would like to turn into a reality.

Societies at UWESU is a great way to meet people with similar interests and is a perfect way to learn new skills and have fun while you are at it. British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) is the governing body of University and College sport and you have the potential to represent the University in national competitions. This year there will be 43 teams from Badminton to Water Polo, participating in league and knockout competitions.

Weekend tournaments provide opportunities for other sports from Athletics to Windsurf.

UWESU Sport in conjunction with the University provide leagues and tournaments in several sports offering a competitive, fun and relaxed opportunity for all UWE students irrespective of ability. We’ll provide you with just about everything you need from first aid training to official’s courses.

So sign up on your own and we’ll put you in a team or come prepared with a group of mates.

How Do I Join a Sports Club?

Simply go to our website www.uwesu.org/sports Firstly you will need to register your details with UWESU and once you have purchased your UWE Sports Passport this will give you access to the 41 Sports Clubs we currently have on offer.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for then we will support you in establishing a club. Every single sports club is run for students by students. All our students are democratically elected to be on Sports Club committees – one day it could be you!

Whether you live in private accommodation, at home or are studying on another campus you are welcome to join any of the events, activities or performances over the Welcome Weekend.

Music, food and entertainment will bring Frenchay and Glenside Campuses to life over the Welcome Weekend, and our Bower Ashton and St Matthias Campuses will celebrate with a Welcome Monday bbq. ‘Chill out’ and designated alcohol free areas will be provided for those students who would prefer a quiet space to relax in during the weekend.

We aim to make the transition into university life as easy as possible for all our new students, so we know our Welcome events are particularly important for our new international students who may be adjusting to a new country, language and culture.

The fun doesn’t stop after the weekend as a full schedule of events and activities continue throughout the Welcome Week alongside your faculty’s induction sessions.

St Matt’s

Frenchay Campus is the place where most students are based and thus where most of the activity happens. So during Freshers’ Week this is where all the major events take place; from the big Welcome Party, to the celebrated Freshers’ Fair.

Frenchay is home to most of UWESU’s services and in the UWESU building (F Block) you can find the Presidents, the Advice Centre, the JobShop, the Media Centre (home to the student newspaper, Western Eye, and the Hub radio station) and the Sports and Activities Centre (which caters for all sports and societies). If you feel like a drink or something to eat then UWESU offers two bars, Escape and Red Bar, and if you need to grab a snack or pick up a newspaper then there is the Union shop.

With its traditional English sunken lawn surrounded by fantastic 19th century buildings, St Matt’s is the Harry Potter campus.

Small yet perfect, close to the city, Frenchay and Glenside, we’ve got it all going on.

Grass pitches and a traditional gymnasium make it home turf to UWESU Sports Clubs and Martial Arts, but we’ve also got the Drama lovies, Philosophers and Politicians, so the bar is clearly the place for a vibrant evening whether you’re up for a theme night, live-music, quiz or open-mic night, film-club, an existential debate or just a quiet pint on our expansive sofas.

If entertainment or relaxation is needed the UWESU bars are open in the evening so join in the quiz nights, watch live football, play pool, see live bands or party the night away at the weekly events. The University has it’s bars, coffee shops, a refectory, 24 hour library, reception and IT labs.

Glenside You will find the Glenside Student Centre Bar the friendliest bar around; we have regular events ranging from quizzes, comedy nights and live bands. Glenside has Wi-fi access, 4 PCs for student use only, pool tables, plasma screens and a great garden. The bar is renowned for it’s great food so come and try one of our breakfasts or lunchtime specials. With no on-site cash machine, our bar offers cashback, we also have a shop in the Centre to purchase that sweet fix you might need, stationery items or a UWE Hoodie.

BOWER ASHTON Bower Ashton is the smallest of UWE’s campuses, so if it’s an intimate friendly atmosphere you’re after you won’t find it better anywhere else. It is home to the School of Creative Arts and is an eclectic and colourful community of more than 1,600 students and a close network of staff. It is situated on the edge of the beautiful parkland of the Ashton Court Estate and is close to Bristol’s city centre.The Students’ Union at Bower Ashton provides a bar, a shop and the office allowing you to access all the student union services including the Advice Centre, Job Shop and access to sports clubs and societies.

The JobShop is based at Frenchay, next door to the Advice Centre, but can also be accessed from the campus offices. It advertises jobs on campus and around the Bristol area - about 4000 a year in total. There’s jobs on campus such as shop and bar staff, whilst those jobs outside the University span a vast range of different opportunities such as office work, care work, retail, manual, call centres and lots more. If you register with the JobShop you will receive a free weekly email of all the current opportunities, so you will have a head start in looking for a suitable job.

YOUR VERY OWN LETTING AGENCY The main SU Advice Centre office is located on the 2F patio, next to the JobShop, at Frenchay and is staffed by two experienced advisers. We also have a third experienced adviser based at Glenside on a Monday and Wednesday, and at Bower on a Tuesday, during term time.

Things to do before you get here: 1. Sort out your paperwork - birth certificate, medical card, UWE acceptance letter and National Insurance No. 2. Make an appointment with your doctor to get vaccinated against Meningitis C. Everyone who hasn’t been vaccinated needs to do this, regardless of age and it will be easier to do through your own doctor.

3. Get a medical kit - all the student essentials - paracetamol, glucose tablets for energy, vitamin C cold treatment to ward off the usual bout of ‘Freshers’ Flu’.

4. Stock up on food for a week or two - to make sure you don’t spend valuable settling-in time wandering the aisles of Tesco!

5. Grab a cookbook and basic cookery equipment - whatever is provided in your house / flat is never enough.

6. Read your accommodation contract before you sign it! If in doubt contact the UWESU Advice Centre.

Managing your money at University can be difficult.

Living and studying can be a very expensive experience. Be prepared to have a blow out during Freshers! If possible try and save some money during the summer, as you may be spending quite a bit during the first few weeks with the possibility of moving into new accommodation, buying books, partying etc.
