A2. Why do you agree that you are satisfied with the Students’ Union? (students) Good prices, in the bars and shop. Good e-mail communication about part time jobs, events etc There is a wide variety to do - whether you prefer to chill and have a coffee with your friends, or have a pint instead! As well as being able to socialize there are places where you can meet with course friends to complete group work - fulfills the two most important aspects of student life! Lots of events going on, very big students union meaning attendance is always high has all the facilities available to satisfy my needs. there is always something new and exciting happening I have used the student union in the past and they sorted out my problem for me. The Students Union do whatever they can to make university an enjoyable, valuable experience They have helped me with all my needs and been very informative It is true that I have had just one interaction with UWESU when I picked up my NUS card, but it was pleasant, help was offered very fast and everybody was very friendly. Overall, it was a very satisfying experience. Great facilities available as well as daily events carried out across the year. I don't have any complaints to hand. There's always something to do and I'm happy with the way it operates. Because there is always a vibrant atmosphere, it is well organised in terms of elections and the staff are friendly. UWESU maintains good communications and plans a diverse range of activities Because the staff in the SU are very helpful. There are always lots of cheap events being arranged by the SU. The food and drink in the SU is so much cheaper than the food in the traders and this is also good. Glenside SU, although small, has everything I require from campus as a mature student. It's prices are reasonable (especially when compared with Traders), it's accessible and the office is always staffed when I need to see someone for information or advice. It's useful in allowing me to express my opinions and allows me to take part in the sports I enjoy. Loads of variety like Service is always very good, act well for students Because I have had no problems as yet so they must be doing everything correct I feel that the Union listen to my opinions whenever I give them and act on them to the best of their ability There are most of the services provided I would need. I am happy with the work that they have done but I believe that more could be done. It would be nice to see more of the people working for our student union and knowing what they are up to.

A2. Why do you agree that you are satisfied with the Students’ Union? (students) Student services are very approachable and easy to communicate with. The Students Union is a great asset to the university. However, sometimes the organisation can be a little off. Haven't used all the facilities but the ones I have seem fine. I am sometimes happy but sometimes the tables are all dirty and it's not well kept They held lots of events which is good for first years, the food and drink service is good and the su's layout, building, decor etc Most feedback from me is good, including the student ambassador, volunteer activities, emails of news from UWESU. Offers a lot of activities suitable for everyone Pretty good experience with them, what little interaction i had with the s.u seemed good. Good SU and facilities, lots of sports/activities Often it's not big enough for the number of students who pass through every day. Food prices are extremely high. You were good at organizing parties at the beginning of the year, your website is well done, your speech of presentation also. But you should focus also on priorities the NUS has which is lower education fees. A union is also there to defend social rights of students and I haven't seen much of this. I've had a few hostile experiences with the Dyslexic Support services here. I feel I am well represented as a student, and there are plenty of societies and clubs run by the Union. However, I feel there isn't a strong enough UWESU presence at Bower Ashton, and I feel that Frenchay gets much more attention The services it does provide are excellent; however, compared to some other universities, the range of services available are limited There's good communication and support with the student body but at times when having had to deal with the SU on behalf of a society committee there have been prolonged delays and inefficiency The service they provide is good but some of their charges aren't well explained, eg the uwe su card bought online cost the same as normal + a delivery charge, although you still had to pick it up from the su reception! I am at glenside campus and I do not feel that I have been involved in the union that much. I also feel that as Bristol is a big city I would rather go out in the city centre than at Frenchay. The student union does a great job at the university. However I think that they should address to students what it is they actually do and their responsibilities. I also believe that the students at UWE should be entitled to a shop that provides acceptable prices, as at the moment prices are high compared to other shops. As a student rep I can see the issues taken up and something is done about it Because I think that the uni is very well catered for students with everything walking distance from halls. It has excellent facilities such as the gym and the librbay.

2

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

A2. Why do you neither agree nor disagree that you are satisfied? Some positive aspects, such as wide variety of clubs and plans for new Student Union, but feel communication and interaction could be stronger. Have had insufficient involvement to give a valid opinion Because I haven't really needed to interact with them yet. I rarely actively use any of the SU services. I don't know what work has the student union done? The student union is always helpful whenever asking for help, however i feel that it is not a successful social place to be most of the time. I don't have much to do with the Students Union as on Glenside it appears they is a lot smaller input and the facilities are very poor for so many students. Could be improved. Better bars and other facilities would improve it. Do not have much involvement, so I cannot comment. Not too sure on the level of support or representation that is provided/given; so i cannot give a more definite answer I don't have anything to do with the union. Because I do not have most interaction with the union. It is not obvious to me where they can help me in my day to day Uni life. I don't have much contact with it, as I'm only on campus every third weekend. The prices are good and at Glenside the layout has recently been refurbished so it is a nice place to socialise However I do not feel that the SU at Glenside supports nursing students in this current difficult climate regarding cuts and changes to placements and difficulties in appropriate mentorship during placements. Food's terribly expensive. I feel that the Union could do something about this. Well I am based at the Swindon site so i do not really get much contact or involved much. I don't have a lot to do with them as I am a mature student who lives quite a way away from the University. Have not had much to do with the students union Because I cant take full advantage of everything it has to offer because there isn't much a huge presence of all other stuff ie sports and things at my campus. (bower ashton)

3

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

A2. Why do you neither agree nor disagree that you are satisfied? I do not feel that I have much exposure to the activities of the SU to give a fully positive, or negative answer. Because I don’t know much about it Some nights are decent but the facilities are rubbish there are never any good events on. But the finance and student support centre within the student union is good Union doesn't seem to fully represent everyone, plus in my opinion full time officers paid way too much It does well in some ways, as in clubs and sports, but the actual system of improving things is a bit of a failure. At bower Ashton, almost nobody wants to put themselves forward as student reps, or campus officer, because nobody thinks it makes any difference. The student union cant really change anything, its up to the top dogs in UWE, at Spike Island, we really want more access to our studios, 24/7 access would be perfect, as many people work during the day and would come into the studio at night. But just this week, there have been people coming in to see if we are using the space effectively, and most likely they will try to take the space off of us, because it costs UWE money to rent it. Due to the distance between my campus and the main campus where the Student Union is mainly based, I have not been able to participate fully in activities/societies due to travel costs, meaning I have somewhat missed out on this experience. I know they are there, but I have not had to use any so don't know how effective they are I haven't had much involvement with the SU, however I do see interesting posts on my UWE homepage and within my inbox that, so I am on the fence. There could be a wider variety of societies on offer I think that the prices in the UWESU shop are a bit too high for the student budget and that food and drink in the SU bar is also overpriced for what it is, but the service provided is very good. Facilities such as the bars and cafe are good however involvement in things such as election and processes are limited. I am a distance learning student and do not use the union very much. Because the freshers events weren't very inclusive and didn't really cater for a range of tastes. It doesn't really feel like there is much of a student union presence at the Bower Ashton campus and people seem to feel very disconnected. It would be good if there were more events/society/groups outside of Frenchay as it feels as though the student union is more for the students there. The bus service is really not reliable and seems to run so that at times when people mainly need the bus there isn't enough room and then other times there are empty buses. the buses often don't turn up or are really really late even though other bus services in Bristol run really well. However the people who work in the student union place in Bower Ashton are mainly very nice and really helpful.

4

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended) A2. Why do you disagree that you are satisfied with the Students’ Union? (students) Because the only interaction that I have had with the student union is through the SU shop. At the Glenside Student Union there is a lack of activities and opportunities, especially at night we would like to have the Student Union open for longer to allow people of Glenside the chance to hang out together and meet new or people at Glenside. It's ok. Not brilliant. There aren't loads of societies or sports opportunities. There is a distinct lack of gluten free food provision. Or any food allergens provision. I have not had allot of dealings directly with the Union while at Frenchay this year. I have not attempted to contact the Union other than for beer, but I also do not feel the union has tried particuarly hard to interact with me. It feels distant, lack of two-way communication. SU activity is largely focused on Frenchay. Facilities at Glenside are minimal. Because 90% of the Students' Union activities and support take place at the Frenchay campus, and I'm a Bower Ashton student. I've written this in the surveys every years I've been at UWE (5 years, part-time, and nothing ever changes) The Su at Glenside is substandard in comparison to the su at frenchay campus The SU shops & bars are expensive, especially compared to other universities. Not enough events are going on in Glenside and when there is, it is soo badly publicize, that 1 or 2 groups of friends turn up. Plus the fact that the nights it is opened is reduced to one night a week is definitely not enough. I think it is better if it is open on a monday AND a friday. The opening hours are quite limited. The food options do not really cater for my dietary requirements (vegetarian and gluten free). The layout of the bar could be better as large queues form and when adding milk/sugar etc to hot drinks there is always a build up of people making it hard to do. The music played is bad! It would be better to play music that has more of a nice 'coffee shop' type feel in the daytime to encourage students to go in there, buy coffee, chat and maybe do some work. Hardcore dance at 11am does not make me want to stay there after buying my tea! The more upbeat and lively music could be played in the evenings. I think the services would be really good, but i think that it does not feel very accessible and from this can seem to look unfriendly, because of this I am reluctant to want to go visit it. This is due to not being able to know which is the right service. I have also found that they don't represent the different view points of the union. I feel that the events put on are not very well thought out or advertised especially considering the campus is so far out of town. I just feel that when some of the events are put on could be a little better thought out for example karaoke on a Saturday? Most people go out on a Saturday but they also enjoy a bit of karaoke so surely that would be better placed on a night where less people go out eg. a Monday possibly. Another event is £1.50 Fridays, I have so much fun at these but they just aren't very well advertised, at my friends university they have "Mad Fridays" and it is one of their busiest nights, but it is advertised everywhere and everyone is sent invites who have liked their page. I could probably go on for ages about the events side and things that could be done but I think I should stop now, I do however think other aspects of the union are fantastic, the shop is incredibly handy and

5

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

A2. Why do you disagree that you are satisfied with the Students’ Union? (students) Facilities aren't that great, only basic, meaning that any nights they have on there aren't usually very busy. Also, it would be better if they put gigs on ther They are on my site for a limited time during the week, its when I'm in lectures - so I never get a chance to go in and see them about anything! I think the student union provides some support but has almost no activities and I wouldnt say it academically represents us at all. The student union on campus is either shut or extremely quiet most of the time. Bower Ashton has no real SU representative or participation. They have hardly any impact on my university life. I find it hard to understand what they do for students. It's all really vague. because at bower ashton there seems to be no real sense of any sort of student union and there is very little connection/relationship between the different uwe campuses Based at Glenside. Lack of facilities, limited societies and sports clubs. Quite pricey, no cash machine. The facilities at Glenside are lacking. The SU bar closes around 3pm everyday and there are no activities on campus They it in a bubble of the societies and their representation is just whatever the leadership says. However its only mostly disagree because their are some really nice and competent individuals. I am mostly satisfied with how it runs The staff are fine and courteous but not a good atmosphere at all and the food is absolutely atrocious- there is nothing being served there with any nutritional value. Other campuses have highly superior food being served and it's absolutely abominable that the only things being served at ours is junk food. It stops me and everyone I know eating there and therefore leads us to be very unhappy when we have long days at uni. It's worse than anything I was ever served in a school canteen. As the glenside campus is small the uwe campus services night out services are irregular and quite dull. Probably comes with the territory of a nursing campus! However the food and uniform services there are good as they arrested cheap. Dont see them doing much. No communication, mixed messages all the time I found that it wasn't a clear set up when joining university, as I was looking to join something music based, and only found out at the end of the year. Also the REDbar isn't great, which is a real shame for people looking to have a drink out, but not a rave. However, I do acknowledge that the sports side is probably where SU excells - but I haven't got involved with sports. The Students union is a farce, Especially regarding representation and welfare, in two years of having a welfare president the students union has gone back 10 years in the struggle to protect vulnerable students. Because when it come to the clubs offered I personally feel the 1st years where not informed of the types of clubs, how to join any and wat days clubs take place for example if every student finished early on one particular day of the week to ensure and give every one the chance to attend and participate in other activities which are not academic related

6

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

A2. Why do you disagree that you are satisfied with the Students’ Union? (students) I don’t feel there is enough done to get people into sport or to make students feel that they can approach teams after the trial dates at the beginning of term, it feels like if you missed the first week then you cant participate for the rest of the year. i was in a netball team in first year and my coach and some team mates made participation in the team so unbearable i had to leave and never joined a team at UWE again. i feel like i wasted some of my talent and this may have been reduced if there was a SU rep that wasn’t part of the squad to regulate or monitor the experiences members have, or just be there to seek advice. Satisfies all my needs - plenty of variety in terms of food, drink, nights out, societies etc. While the UWESU does some excellent work it is far too reliant on student drinking. One wonders if the 'Drink Responsibly' campaign on all event posters is one the SU could afford students to do. There where many promises told last year before we elected. and now all of sudden its like those promises don’t exist... you didn’t change anything The students union repeatedly fails to engage and mobilize students with regards to key interests, such as fees, loss of departmental staff, increasing class sizes, and consolidation of tutors. Unclear about the management structure and who is accountable. lot of people involved with the SU need a kick up the arse. Also the physical infrastructure is a joke Fails to uphold mandates and represent students' interests generally. Mostly incompetent. A2 Why do you say that? (N/A) I am a Swindon student, not much UWESU contact here in Swindon and the only problem I did attempt to raise with the union (about parking at Swindon) went down like a lead balloon. I didn't find it helpful to be told, "well you ought to try parking at Glenside". I am not based at Glenside so whats that got to do with the price of fish! Haven't used SU services yet I'm a distance learning student. Long distance learning, so only visit university once a month for a week. Don't tend to have anything to do with the students union. Because I never use it as I live a fair way from campus, plus we never see any of the SU near S block I do not live in Bristol so do not have to use the services of the su very much. I am a distance learner and have not used the Student Union Mature student, just come in for lectures, do not use it. Part time student, don't live on campus but far away, come in 4 days once a month for the course. I'm also a mature student and have no particular use for the union. Because i am not a member of the su and do not know what services are offered

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

E2. Why do you say that you will vote? (students) No point in having a union unless we vote on how we want it run and by who. The student union provides an excellent bridge between students and the university. Furthermore it provides the elected students with valuable work experience, which they can take on to their future careers. I want to take part in the university I have become a student representative for the first time this year and i feel it would be irresponsible not too and i previously haven’t because this wasn’t really explained to our degree groups So my opinion is represented and the most effective person can be selected Because i want a body that can represent the students I always vote I hate when people moan about who was elected when they have not bothered to vote themselves I think its important to take part in shaping the SU. I vote every year, especially for sports vp as this directly affects me and I think it is important to have a say in who runs the su I think it is important to have a word who is going to represent us. As a student rep, I feel that I want mine and other student’s input to be heard and the UWESU elections will help this. Because i think its important to have my point of view counted for, as a pose to moaning about it later in the year/next year Because I have the right to vote and express my opinion on who i want to represent me next year Because I was quite involved in it last year and so am likely to vote this year I feel that it is important not to neglect my responsibility as a vote-capable student I feel it's important to get involved with the representatives for students views, as they are the ones who ultimately have the power to change things for me. I like to vote in the election Because I know that change can not occur, to suit the needs/wants of students, if students are not willing to share the views. I believe the first step to contributing is showing your support, and voting. Important to use the right to have a small say in important issues within the University Students voice needs to be heard. Its our SU at the end of the day, Because its important to elect people you believe can make a change. Someone who cares for the student views. It's not based on popularity, but on ability and I feel strong that they should be focused eg campaigning for 2012 and tuition fees. I think it is important for as many people as possible to share their view so we all get what we all agree is the best from our SU I always vote. There is no point complaining that you don't like the winner if you don't even vote! Its' important for the Students Union to have correct representation, I am keen to see a person who I want in charge and get good representation

8

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

E2 Why do you say that you will vote? (students) Elections are important; otherwise you get the same old people with the same old issues dominating things. Feel it's important - have a responsibility to know what is happening on campus. I am not sure what the elections are regarding but when, and if, I find out I will make sure I make my opinion matter. I voted last year and so will probably vote again this year because I believe it is important to elect suitable people for the jobs. I wish to make sure I have a voice in my rights as a students, however I may be on placement and so may not be around to vote. You can't complain if you don't vote! The result of this election will directly affect my time in UWE It is important to vote in who will benefit the students here at UWE. I have already voted for a campus officer. I like to meet different people, find like-minded people. I will try to vote for the person I feel best represents my views. Opportunity to decide who will run SU Haven't heard too much about it yet. I want to voice my opinion on how the SU is run. I have done before and it's made easy on the website i would like to get involved but don’t know a lot about the elections at this time If their campaigns seem realistic and convincing to me, then I'll vote I think it's important to stay involved in an election that can have a direct impact on your student life, for better or worse. I feel as though it would benefit all studying at UWE Because I want to get more involved I feel that my vote should count as to who will be running next year! I would be interested in who was at the head of the union and what their plans would be though I am unsure what the processes for finding this out and taking part would be I feel like as I'm given the opportunity to vote that I would use it! Because I voted last year As I am in my first year I am not yet sure about how it works and who is running. The way the student union is run is something that affects my academic life, I want to chose the person who represents what I feel is important the most

9

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

E2 Why do you say that you will not vote? (students) Didn't even know there was an election. Don't know who the applicants are. Don't know what they will do/what they have the authority to change. I voted last year but have no idea what has changed. Last year of university so will not affect me Don't feel like it will affect me as im now in my final year. What previous electors have done different with the uni is unclear I don't really see differences year by year no matter who is elected It depends how good the candidates are. Also, I'm not sure how much difference one president/officer can make in their area in just one year. When you start uni it seems as though its only the efforts of previous presidents/officers that are relevant to you. Other than that I think its important to participate in the SU elections - the outcome can be the difference between a content student body and an discontent one. Positions really aimed at undergrad students Don't know enough about it, not been spoken to about it. I didn’t vote last year or the year before, so don't expect to this year I am not familiar with them and also don’t know who are they. it is better for me no take part on this instead of electing a person who are bad. Not very much involve and don’t know how to do it. In this economic climate, I am skeptical about the ability of the students union to make any changes of note, ergo it does not particularly matter who is in charge. I am a distance learning student so am not on campus most of the time. I never normally have an opinion on who is elected No Involvement I'm a part-time student in my final year so will not get to know the candidates nor will be at university when they are in post. Not interested I don't really know what the process is and I'm not sure about he election process I don't think it makes a great difference. Sorry to be such a skeptical person. It is not obvious to me how I will vote. whilst I see campaigners and I am aware the elections take place, voting isn't an integrated process. Also I have not been made aware of the previous impact elections have had on the policies that effect my education. I don't know who is running for elections or anything about them.

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

E2 Why do you say that you will not vote? (students) I don't really know what the roles entail and don't know how to choose the best candidate. Even if I vote for a person I have never met before, because they come to my campus for one hour and hand out lolly pops, I will never hear from them again, and they never support or help me in any way again. During every election period, I am bombarded with flyers or posters for candidates. There are so many to choose from that I prefer to avoid the decision. Similarly, I do not feel that my vote would change much in the university either. I do not feel particularly involved with my Student Union. I don't feel I have a stake in these elections It is unlikely I will find the time to read through the nominees manifesto Since the Union does nothing that affects me as a Hartpury College Student I see no point in wasting my time voting on a matter that will not concern me. Because they are likely to all be Bristol based and not relevant for Hartpury I have never seen a candidate that warranted voting for. SU doesn't really affect my life. None of the representatives seem to care a lot about Glenside SU. There are a lot of students on Glenside campus and the SU bar and shop are appalling. Its rarely open in the evenings, with very little entertainment. I have seen NO uwe students promoting a better Glenside su bar and shop. I expect I have to take my own initiative and since I enrolled in the final year I don't feel like a participant in the Student Union although I see and respect what you are doing. Used to be active at my previous university, now I'm focusing on my final degree show. If voting is easy I will! The union hasn't really made a difference to my student life I usually don't have enough information on what the runners for the SU are trying to do/change/achieve I choose to disassociate myself, as I don't feel SU politics have any impact on my University experience. Last years elections didn't offer any real change in the union (in my opinion). Never know candidates, more like a popularity contest. Person elected makes little difference, all do same job role. I don't know the people so how can I possibly know what they are like or what they are going to do. All you see is ridiculous posters plastered all over the uni and it gets annoying as they don't help who to vote for! Wouldn't know how to vote even if I wanted to. Tiny turnouts for positions only relevant to the student union. Have had nothing to do with it all three years. As we are not actually based at uwe Glenside we seem to have little involvement Don't know what it's for?!

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

E2 Why do you say that you are unsure about voting? (students) As I have not felt the responses from my voting in the last election. I don't believe, at this point, that the committee have affected the university in any possible method. I don't really know too much about it at the moment. I’m not too sure when they are or what they are Because I am not familiar with the candidates I am basically a distance learner and rarely use the SU, so I think it would not be a good idea for me to express a view on something i really know nothing about. Final year at UWE so won't affect me, but obviously want the students union to improve further to benefit UWE as a whole I'm still not fully sure about ow everything works, I will vote when I know more. I will vote depending on what each candidate has to offer. I don't know who to vote for or when you have to vote by I have to find out more and I'm very busy with my course. I haven’t been much info about this Have not heard much about it. It would be nice to have been sent some information about this via e-mail. I'm not at the University often enough for it to make a difference to me (as an Open Learning Postgrad) As I have only just joined the uni, I am unsure of who is running in the election at this point or how good these people are and so feel my vote would not be useful at this point I don’t know yet who the candidates are and what they have to offer, so I would need to find third information out first. Don't feel it'll make any difference. I want to because I want to have a point of view on what happens at Bower, but nothing happened last time and there’s not really a big presence for voting here - there should be events rather than just small talks where everyone can see and promotional stands or something for candidates. I'm not sure who I'm voting for at this point. Need to know more about the candidates I do not know the importance of the election. And I am not sure how the election of somebody affects my everyday life. It depends if I am approached by a candidate. Haven’t heard anything about it

1 2

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Perceptions and experiences (open-ended)

E2 Why do you say that you are unsure about voting? (students) I don’t know anything about the election or who is running!! The only involvement i have with uni is to come to learn 3 days a week. I don’t spend any more time here unfortunately! Do not know the candidates or anything about an election I don't know about it I don’t know enough about the elections to know whether i will or not. Depends how I feel at the time. I feel it is important to have strong student representatives in the union. However I also believe that one person cannot possibly represent an entire body of students on a single matter. I need to know more about them before I can consider whether to and who to vote for. Unsure of the procedure. I’m too busy with my work and placement to have time for researching what they stand for. Don't actually live on campus, limited impact to those off campus Unsure who the candidates are at this stage, so unsure as to whether I will have a particularly strong view on any of their campaigns. Dont know who candidates will be Depends if there is a worthy candidate. Like all slightly political thing they just say who they are not what they aim to do i come from hartpury and last year i felt that the people standing for election left hartpury out a lot I am a third year student and have never voted before and it has not affected my student life. I am a student rep and I think that is an important use of my time. I’m not sure what the elections are at this point Not sure if I can once I finish my course in 2 weeks time!! Don’t know anything about it I do not spend enough time at UWE to worry about the UWE Student Union elections.

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop Experiences

G1 What three words would you use to describe your ideal students’ union? (Students)

1

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop The future – Suggestions

G2. Do you have any ideas / suggestions for how the Students’ Union at UWE can improve? (students) Ask the mature student what they require and perhaps join the divide between the younger and the older students At the moment I have very little knowledge on the union units entirety and as such I have very little interest since it has really been affecting my life. So in my case the union needs to raise student awareness and interest. Better communication Better communication of ongoing union issues and activities, as well as a more visible presence at campuses outside of Frenchay. Better products in the su shop, such as food for allergies (friend has wheat intolerance, cant have too much sugar and yeast) Better provision of information/ promotion. Increased range of food and drink in the uwesu shop and bars (and cheaper prices). Wider range of music and other entertainment such as comedy for associated events and nightlife. Better relationships between different campuses and to improve communications between them Better times for dance classes as they are all on one day and I get out of lessons to late to attend them. Bring things to Hartpury college. We are supposed to be part of UWE but nothing happens here and we cant afford to travel all the way to Bristol for events. Just because we are a sports and equine college, doesnt mean all the events should be sports and equine oriented. Think outside the box to interest the animal behaviour students! especially since we are considered outcasts by the rest of the college, being the minority. By hosting more events on weekends. Cheaper prices Cheaper products in the SU shop. More development of Nina's health role. Cheaper sports memberships Communication Communication especially social networks like Facebook and twitter Create my themed events and involve students away from campus, express opportunities and events more clearly to all. Dissolve it and start from the beginning. Banging on about Student Fees makes no difference. Overall, I am happy to pay £9000 for an education I know will help me in the future. The repayment scheme is 10 times better than the previous one so stop thinking that you are representing the Students View. You talk about increasing employability. How about actually supporting the societies that focus on that whether they are SU affiliated or not. Do not waste time and work more efficiently.... do it today, not tomorrow Even after fresher’s fair there should be other avenues to make the students aware of their existence. Get rid of Traders! Have more students support their own University, instead of giving money to an outside company!

1

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop The future - Suggestions get students more involved with what happens in the student union. The main thing is that whenever there is something going on it isnt as well advertised as it could be. UWE is a huge campus, so the students union should keep that in mind when trying to communicate with students. get the library sorted, the furnishings are rather outdated Glenside - feels like a separate university from frenchay! Glenside -SU needs more seats at lunchtime!! Glenside could do with a lick of paint or something to make it look less like a dirty shed and more like an awesome SU! (to project on the outside what the vibe is like on the inside) Hosting more events - live music/bands - involving all students not just the ones live on campus I am in no position to give suggestions as I do not fully understand the role of Students' Union and I do not know exactly what I can benefit from this organisation. So I guess its communication. Not just a few talks to the freshers, we forget what you said pretty much right after you say "any questions?" Have an info point where we can go to and look for information. IE, the website. Everything we need to know should be on it, and I mean EVERYTHING. Answering our every possible questions, the who, how, when, where, why. Keep it simple, and keep it clean. This way it should be easily accessible and easily navigated by others. I don't feel I'm informed enough to make that kind of suggestion I have two ideas for the UWE Students Union. First of all, (because I'm a computer programmer) I would be happy to make a UWESU iOS app that students can use. Contact me: supertecnoboff@me.com. I think an app like this would attract more students to UWESU and would let more students know about the latest news, events, etc... The second idea I had is that I think UWESU, should try and communicate with students more, because until I filled this survey, I have never even heard of the UWESU presidents election..... lol. I think that students need to be pushed to be more involved with social events provided by the SU. I think that the addition of more events such as themed nights would make the SU far more enjoyable I think that the main bar needs a revamp downstairs to allow it to be more open and some how larger because for sporting events and busy nights there is not enough room for everyone downstairs, and too few tables. Perhaps a rota for menu choices as well to keep it fresh. I think there should be more events organised, bigger events more often I wish they stopped sending me emails about partying: it feels that that's the only thing they are there for. I think it gives the Union a bad image. I would like there to be a volleyball sports team running next year as this is a sport I will feel keen to take part in I would like to see the SU invite students to share their opinions on important matters - such as the new building - more prominently. I would also like members of the SU such as bar managers and VPs to be more committed to improving the student experience as opposed to just generating revenue. I'd promote the voting options more publically. Many people don't bother to vote; so more adverts and campaigns would help. Improving communication with students with regards to informing us about upcoming events far enough in advance so that we can choose to be involved if we wish. Integrate all campuses instead of excluding them

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop The future – Suggestions

Interact with the students throughout the year and improve publicity Introduce themselves to the students to course groups. It feels detached, more of a business than students representing fellow students. It' needs to find itself within Hartpury! Students don't relate to UWE, we are Hartpury students! We don't travel to Bristol so stop advertising those events to us as it becomes frustrating and exclusionary. Our college students have a better time than HE students because many of our social activities and recreational clubs are Bristol based. Keep up the good work? Make freshers more aware of its existence and services they provide make activities/events more public Make it mandatory for all Presidents to work the opening hours that the Students Unions is open. The opening hours need to be longer i.e. opening at 9am and closing at 5pm. The finance office needs to be open at the same time, and the need to provide more simpler statements, just like the statements that banks use, in order for societies and sports teams know exactly what money is coming in and going out. As Treasurer for the Bar School society last year, the 2011/2012 academic year, there were many times where I was left frustrated that either the VP Socs & Comms President wasn't at their desk as well as the complexity of the bank statement for the society, which left me as well as the Secretary confused about where the money was coming from and going to. Make it more clear to students about all that is on offer or how to find out what is on offer. modernise the SU bars (red bar & escape bar) More active in general college induction sessions. Clearer website home page - explaining how membership works and why it is important. More activities at Hartpury, most clubs you have to travel to bristol to utilize which is a challenge when you have no car More advertisment through out the Uni as I do not regulary visit the SU building Opening hours - letting students know what they are. Getting more people to the nonfrenchay sites. live music Operate more effiectively Perhaps by making changes in the university more publicised. Perhaps communicate the presidents etc more, provide better entertainment to persuade more than 1st years to attend the SU events at the on campus bars. Perhaps put monthly updates or newsletter through the doors of on site residents. get to know your presidents youtube videos Perhaps some refurbishments and a different approach on how to reach out with students. Flyers are never read but nearly always thrown in the bin and emails deleted without reading. Maybe playing a short Youtube video to students once a term before a lecture would be a more beneficial way of reaching out. Please improve the food. It really is so atrocious that that is all they serve. Presidents getting more involved in the activities of the SU, e.g. Sports/Societies/Networks.

3

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop The future - Suggestions Probably the single most important provision for me (that I am aware of) has been the food available at the Glenside bar. Good quality and value hot food and coffee is an important factor in making the everyday experience of working at Glenside enjoyable. Providing a lottery facility on campus and a swimming pool. Offering more off campus trips e.g trips to thorpe park etc... Putting on more free events Recognise that there are other campus' apart from frenchay Remember that Frenchay is not the only campus. Every student (dependent on academic year) at UWE are paying the same amount to be here so why shouldn't everyone receive the same benefits and experiences without being limited by location. Seek the views of everyone - not just those who shout loudest Sell meat products e.g. chicken in the SU shop Simplify online page involve more students do not create a clicks The jobshop - sometimes the job listings are null and void so someone ends up applying for a job that is no longer available. A little disheartening. So I think they should do regular follow-ups to find out what job listings are active The student union at UWE is a very good institution, compared to Salford SU, Man Met SU and Manchester university SU. I am aware that UWE works very hard to ensure the quality of its union and as such these suggestions are largely already being implemented to some degree. Increase its budget - the more power the SU has the more likely it will be able to improve Regularly publish clear information detailing everything the student union does and how people can get involved Create an awareness campaign with the sole premise of finding ways of making involvement in the SU as attractive as possible, and dispelling the belief that the SU is powerless or inefficient Make becoming a part of the union as inviting as possible (the more people involved the more accurately it will represent the needs of the student body) Ensure that freshers are made fully aware of the possibility and long term benefits of becoming involved Try and spread the word more regarding what you are doing. I have absolutely no idea!! Try to inform students better. Hardly anyone reads handouts, so try to do something interesting where students will listen and take in. Try to make it less cliquey. Wider variety of societies, longer opening hours for SU bars on smaller campuses (e.g. Glenside). Work on a more engaging and exciting identity and themes.

G6. Do you have any other suggestions or ideas for the new building? (students) A bigger shop for students, a self- serve food area a creative space so modern building new gadgets available. shop where you can buy student priced breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, An area where you can work and tables that are suitable for people with disabilities. The SU bar at Glenside has replaced all the tables with picnic tables and benches, there are completely unsuitable for use if you have a physical disability and the sofa's are so low to the floor that being an individual with a disability they are extremely uncomfortable and hard to get up from. An on site bank with several cash points, there are not enough cash points on campus. As mentioned earlier I wouldn't use this building due to my course being distance learning. However, from experience I know that the building has to have an appeal to all students and not just the vocal minority. It needs to be a safe environment with affordable food/drink both in terms of during the daytime (coffees, lunch etc) and a good value night out - not all students come from wealthy backgrounds. As said before i thing it should have achievements of what sports and other societies have achieved recently, this could be text, videos or pictures? Also a swimming pool if the building is big enough would be nice too... Basic microwave kitchen facilities. To bring food from home Be light, airy, open to all and clear signage. Bring the outdoors in; more real plants. Better chairs and tables to sit Big dance floor. Split the pub atmosphere and the club atmosphere like it is now, works well. Bigger dance floor at the bar. Lower food prices at the SU general food shop. Bookable area for people living near the uni Can a microwave be provided for those who bring in own food to warm up. Classical architecture, please. Modish novelties will look very tired in 5 years' time. Comfy and warm and good music! Comfy chill out coffee shop. Major fast food franchise. Creates a better first impression than the current 'office block' Different newspapers or magazine subscription. Students would be able to seat and read the papers that can be read only within the union's building. An area for smokers that is 1) protected from the rain 2) has tables set up 3) is not a place excluded from the building Ensure it is easily accessible and in a clear area that students will have to walk past to access most places in the University Ensure the products on sale are affordable.

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop The new building

Fix up some of the smaller campuses instead of focusing on your all important Frenchay one. Flexible space is good, but ensure that people know what it actually is. A bar? Another core24? A cafe? Not sure how big its going to be so could be all of these but make sure people use it for the right things. Needs to be in a central place so that its active and not just sat there! Games room. Perhaps a few rooms where students in need could spend the night in cases of emergency. Have companies that can buy a space there. Maybe cheap hairdressers, or a local sandwich shop etc. Make it a place people want to go to. I already stipulated everything on the past section. Cinema with lazy boy chairs. Massage chair. I suggested a student book (during GDP activities in my first year) about the facilities available such as; the use of a microwave, hot water (drinkable, how to obtain lockers (something I have looked into and needed but have not been contacted again), somewhere secure to leave things (I had to climb 4 flights of stairs lugging heavy books and bags around because I couldn't leave it due to health and safety), somewhere comfortable and quiet to relax and contain the important contact information such as what the union does, who are our reps, who to turn to for help as there isn't anything that has all this contained info that might be helpful (an online could be made available so that you wouldn't have to incur printing costs). I think it needs to have generalised study areas, where they don’t need to be booked, somewhere you go do your work plug your laptop in and have a group of people, there aren’t enough spaces in the library to have a study session without booking it which is ridiculous I think it should contain more pool tables and other gaming equipment. Perhaps provide more entertainment night such as quiz nights etc. I think that it should be much bigger than the current student union and they should have more variety on the food available. I went to an event at Bath university which has three areas in it's SU bar, each with room for a dj. In the daytime it's used for socialising and eating, nighttime for night events. They had a night on each week (like the lock in) and then a special event every so often where known dj's would play. It was always packed and people got tickets way in advance. Involve the final year undergraduate and/or postgraduate students studying architecture at UWE in the design conceptualisation and the art students from Bower Ashton in furnishing the building with artwork and/or finishing. It'd be sweet if there were more book-able rooms for group studying like in the library (4th floor). It can get a bit distracting trying to work in a group with a load of people talking Keep the design light and open using sustainable micro generation techniques Keep the pool tables and maybe invest in some extra comfy chairs not so low to the floor Larger spaces to accommodate all the students Lockers, lots of students live outside the campus, and spend the whole day in school. There is no place to put their stuffs. For example, the heavy books, or sports wearing. If there is any lockers in the campus, that will be much more convenient. Look at the movements of people before placing bars. Red bar has almost no passing trade as students will either go through core24 or the wastefully large corridor underneath the bar.

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop The new building Lots of natural light. Be a place for people to go early in the morning, good coffee, fresh and healthy food for breakfast, natural lighting. A good space for people to start the day. A somewhat organic, hippy douchey cafe place that people like to go and start their day away from the fluorescent lighting and endless grey. Would be nice if the building didn't use colour like a primary school, but was kinda funky. Have it become an area for students to display work and collaborate. Make it as energy efficient and "green" as possible with the lowest carbon footprint in terms of construction and materials! If it can be made of organic hemp it should!!!!!!!! Make it as funky and as modern as possible. Greater effort to combine all SU. Great promotion deals Make it bigger with own area for sports teams. Swimming pool. Make it comfortable, not a sterile environment. Make it eco friendly Make it instantly recognisable to anyone entering the campus. advertise events, etc on posters and banners out the front or on the side of the building and around the campus Might be an idea to tell people about it?! More emphasis on career help and people to help 3rd years work loads and worries Needs to be modern -Students are paying £9000 a year for education, over 6000 more then last year, If you took £100 students (a small portion of those in UWE) you'd have over £600,000 to improve on on site facilities. -Needs to be something i can boast pop up shops, small and large music stages, cheaper coffee, games area Powerful computers that actually run the software that is needed for courses Promote it more to St.Matt, Bower Ashton, and Glenside students as a space for them to socialize and relax in, as I assume the new SU building will be on Frenchay and smaller campuses are often forgotten. Should be central to the university so students can find it easily and comfortable seating and more seating, colours should be more neutral because too much colour can make people feel discomfort. It should have a food court like the one zone near as this is more easier for students. Have automatic sliding doors as the doors in core24 always have a problem and this is hard for disabled students Smoking area maybe at the BACK of the building, alcohol areas seperate to the lounge areas, so the smell doesn’t stay in the carpets during the day time! Space and live coverage of sporting events e.g the six nations. Spacious and bright. Noise level zones ie. quiet zone for reading alone, chat zone for socialising etc. Stage for live entertainment from students/bands/singers/comedy/open mic nights. Lockers Cashpoint stop focusing on socialising and remember that students come to uni to STUDY , we have no individual study spaces which would be really useful for third year students who can't concentrate in the hive etc.

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop The future

I1 Do you have any other comments you would like to feed back to the Students’ Union? A generally great student's union :) A questionnaire is a good idea As I am a mature student with responsibilities at home (ie children) and I live in Swindon I do not get to SU at often as some but would still like to hear about any changes or improvements to the facilities available. As part of the student union newsletter, could there by an environmental column, to inform the general public about current environmental issues, how they can help and what UWE is doing to reduce its environmental impacts and increase sustainability. Could not be more disappointed. Currently doing a very good job, would like to see the SU expand and grow, whilst maintaining the level of involvement with students DONT FORGET GLENSIDE!!!!! Don’t put the reception in the new building on the fifth floor Don’t take spike island away from fine art and share it with other subjects, there’s not enough space as it is....despite what the site evaluation this week might have shown... Enjoy the rest of your day! Events need to be advertised more/better. For the new build - would be great to encourage more student participation. From the business background I study, seems like an amazing opportunity to witness first hand what big projects like this are like to organise and I think a lot of other disciplines could learn a lot from witnessing this process close up. Hopefully new computers will be added to NEW building, as current LABS rooms are too crowded. Hub Radio is a great asset not only to the Student Union but also to the University itself I am impressed with the events and social areas as a new student. I appreciate being asked my opinion about the future of the SU :) I didn't understand how to answer the first set of questions on this questionnaire properly. I do not have any other comments. I don't know how to offer improvements, describe the students union or have a full opinion on it, as I don't fully know what it has to offer, or what it does, what it is for etc. I don't mind filling in these surveys, as long as there is some evidence the information given is actually used.

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop The future I don’t like being bombarded with emails, the occasional one a week maybe is good. but more often than that and its annoying and so I don’t even bother opening them before I delete them (think I’ve actually unsubscribed now from some of them). Would prefer to find things out other ways (website, posters). I feel it is unfair that the Students' Union has chosen to undertake this research now, as a token effort once the new building has already been designed. It would have been far more useful to both students and the SU if information had been gathered well in advance of the design stages. However I do appreciate there are a lot of areas that the SU excels in that have not been mentioned in this survey. I feel they are doing a really good job I have no further comments. I haven't used the full potential of the union (e.g guidance, employment, etc) so i don't have many opinions on these I hope to be doing my masters and /or LPC at UWE so I am able to see and make use of the new SU! I hope to see improvements soon and I am interested to hear news on the new building. I know the union is looking to become more of a campaigning Students' Union, something which a lot of students support so engagement with students on issues is vital to ensure the right messages go out and therefore encourage more students get involved from a diverse range of backgrounds. I think that the SU shop where it currently is should stay, or a smaller version of it stay, in its current place. The new SU building is very far from a lot of buildings eg the science department. If people need lunch quickly then there should be somewhere with a wide range of food choices near by. I think this is the main downside to the new SU building-its quite far away from a lot of buildings. I think the efforts you make to include students in the union are very good. I think the SU is doing a good job and I would like to hear more about all the work that you all put in. Make the SU more visible for other things than Red Bar and Escape. I think within the survey I've provided all of the relevant feedback that I'm able to and would like to Mature students feel a little left out. Maybe include Hartpury students a bit more? Otherwise nothing thank you :) Maybe rebrand a particular division of the SU specifically for Hartpury More funding for sports! More international students who can speak Cantonese. Most of the friends I have made on the course are my age or similar and none of us know too much about the students union My campus is Weston College, there was no option to pick that so I just picked the first one. You shouldn't ignore students who aren't in the main three campuses. I have no idea what UWESU even is because I don't study at one of the main campuses. I feel left out.

UWESU Strategic Planning Workshop The future

Nothing that I have already said :) On the whole pretty good but more can be done to integrate campuses together, remember that not all students are 18 years old and to keep the bar (Glenside) open past 3pm as sometimes its nice to get a drink after lectures are over. Once again, I would just like to iterate that I think UWESU needs and iOS app. The app can help promote UWESU, students offers, news and more. I would be more than happy to develop the app as I am a computer programmer. Organise more events to bring the students together Over all I’m pleased with the presence of the Students Union on my campus Overall a good SU providing a range and variety of facilities Overall I really like it, I can't really complain. I guess it's just a communication thing. Please ensure there is entertainment every night e.g. more parties, club themes, bar ideas. Please keep us in the loop, whether it be through a facebook group, an email or a poster with bullet points of the meeting minutes so we can see what you are aiming to improve and then we can put ourselves forward to help! :) Please upgrade the radio studio, and make one available on Bower Ashton campus again please. Please, try to reduce the prices at the cafeteria. They are ridiculously high. A student should not pay 4 to 5 Pounds for a lunch meal. That is not reasonable. Radio and Newspaper need improving Remember you are working for the student and your thoughts should always be on them. There is good cheap food it is just hard to find! Think I have provided some helpful comments, can i win now? :) Thinking back to the electoral process, I don't feel comfortable voting for someone based on 1 poster, or 1 picture and one paragraph of text I've read about them. I'm only happy making an informed decision, so would need to hear a lot more from the candidates. This has been a very thorough survey. I think you have asked all the right questions. I think most of all, being a student at Hartpury, I already feel very disconnected from UWE. I do not know much about the union I don't even feel like a student of UWE. I have never even been to UWE's main campus! Perhaps this is partly my fault i should seek out more info on the matter but when I think about it I reallt haven't heard much or seen much info on my campus. I do not know how it works, what it's really there for or who is running it.
