A Message from the President & CEO and Chair of the Board

Dear Friends,

We deeply appreciate your support for the United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region and the vital nonprofit agencies we fund. Thanks to you, we’ve achieved significant successes in providing access to healthy food, education for youth and struggling women, free tax preparation, legal services, and affordable housing for veterans in our community.

In the fiscal year 2022-23, our initiatives began with our 3rd annual Diaper Distribution, where over 100,000 diapers were donated and distributed to non-profits, thanks to the generosity of individuals, local corporations, and department stores. Following this, our School Supply Distribution provided essential resources for families with school-age children, enabling them to start the academic year prepared.

In September at our Community Breakfast we honored Kindness Champions, members in our community who had shown exceptional kindness to their neighbors. Our Community Champions, Andrew O’Grady, from the Mental Health Association of Dutchess County and Angela Jo Henze of the Mental Health Association in Orange County, Inc., shed light on the deep needs in our community for mental health intervention and the services their organizations provide.

With the use of Zoom more people are able to attend online financial literacy seminars, dealing with issues of household budgeting and the road to homeownership. Volunteer involvement at the 9/11 MLK and Juneteenth Days of Service were equalliy supported and the online Equity challenges for MLK and Juneteenth had enthusiastic participation by staff, friends and community members.

Our year culminated in the Celebration of Service, which honored Millbrook Vineyard and Winery. We were again overwhelmed by the support of sponsors and partners in our community. The highlight of the evening showcased the performances of two women vocalists, winners of the Talent United Contest.

Our first “Pull the Tank” event was held in June, where teams of 20 people were challenged to pull a WWII Tank 50 feet. The winner doing this in 17.8 seconds. 13 Teams pulled with all their might for a fun-raising event to fund programs that UWDOR supports for our veterans.

Thank you again for your continued support for the United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region, United in Purpose. to fighting for the health, education and financial stability of everyone in our community.

WOULD ONE DAY LOOK LIKE WITHOUT UNITED WAY?

United Way will always fight for the health, education and financial stability of everyone in our community.

Trauma-informed staff devised a plan, helping Emily open up gradually She was able to catch up on all her assignments and began participating in leadership projects and community service Since starting the program, Emily has not had a single in or out of school suspension. Volunteering Impact

VOLUNTEER:

Every hour, every minute you give helps someone in need. Through our online volunteer portal, United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region makes it easy for individuals and companies to ensure everyone finds their perfect volunteer “match.”

WHY VOLUNTEER?

According to a new study noted in Time Magazine’s article, “Why Volunteering is Good for Your Mental Health.” Not only is it a great way to give back, but a new study shows that volunteering provides important health benefits. Volunteering may “provide a sense of purpose ... while helping maintain social networks that are critical as people age,”

VOLUNTEERING IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY

Last year, we touched the lives of more than 214,688 individuals. Volunteers helped make that difference with 3,494 individuals contributing their time and talent. To continue to support our Dutchess and Orange communities, we are counting on you. Studies show that volunteer hours, valued at $28.06 per hour for each volunteer, add up and save donor dollars allowing more money to go to much needed services in our community.

WANT TO VOLUNTEER?

Visit our volunteer portal at donate.uwdor.org/Volunteer/VolHome.jsp to find the perfect match for you or contact our Community Impact team (ci-inbox@uwdor.org) for special opportunities and our Days of Caring! To help out year-round, email Rebecca Lull (rlull@uwdor.org) for our essential needs program.
