Emily, a second-grader facing academic challenges and frequent conflicts with her peers resulting in suspensions, carried a heavy emotional burden. She grappled with a tumultuous family situation, with her mother's struggles with addiction and homelessness leaving her with feelings of abandonment. Fortunately, an after-school program funded by United Way emerged as a lifeline for Emily.
The program's compassionate, trauma-informed staff crafted a thoughtful plan to help Emily gradually open up and heal. With their support, she not only caught up on her assignments but also started to engage in leadership initiatives and community service projects. Remarkably, since joining the program, Emily hasn't faced a single suspension.
Emily's grandmother attributes her remarkable turnaround to the program, noting that it has significantly boosted her self-esteem and confidence.

"I was having a hard time in school, making friends and the recent loss of my mother to diabetes added an extra layer of concern. Despite my reluctance, I joined a United Way funded wellness program. Starting with one day a week, I worked with tutors, took fitness sessions and joined activities to improve my social skills and manage emotions. I ended up going four times a week and saw major progress. I went from a D to a B- in math, my reading improved, I lost over 30 pounds and made some great buddies."
