GREETINGS FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Dear Friends, As we reflect on this past year at United Way of the Coastal Empire, it is more clear than ever how much we accomplish when we stand together. We are stronger together than we are alone. This year reminded us of that truth in powerful ways, especially in how our community responded to Tropical Storm Debby and Hurricane Helene. During challenging moments, neighbors helped neighbors, partners stepped forward, and together we made sure families had the support they needed to begin to recover and rebuild.

That same sense of community and shared purpose guided how we strengthened our work over the year. We took time to listen, learn, and focus on what matters most for our region. We strengthened how we invest our grant dollars so those resources reach where they can make the greatest difference. We invested more deeply in data to help us understand needs and make better decisions. We expanded relationships with local businesses and growing industries so more families have opportunities to thrive. These efforts help ensure our work is thoughtful, grounded in real needs, and oriented toward lasting progress.

Bringing people together remained at the heart of everything we did. Throughout the year, volunteers, donors, and partners came together to serve in ways that made a real difference across our region. From meaningful hands-on volunteer work to signature events like our Community Fund Campaign Kickoff, Women Who Rule, and Turkey Trot, our community connected in ways that built relationships and raised vital funds to support causes that matter. These moments of service not only strengthened our region, they reminded all of us that when we show up for one another, we create hope and opportunity for everyone.

None of this work happens alone. With deep gratitude, we thank our Board of Directors, agency partners, donors, volunteers, staff, and the residents we serve for the trust, collaboration, and belief that make our impact possible.

Together, we laid a strong foundation for the years ahead, and we are inspired by what we will continue to achieve as we move forward united and stronger together.

Strategic Plan Our strategic plan, approved in March 2021, laid the foundation for our year-round fundraising and communications strategies and affirmed our commitment to a dual focus: providing a safety net for the most vulnerable and pathways for upward mobility so everyone can thrive.

Our strategic plan committee and dedicated staff have been actively advancing each priority of the plan. As we reach this mid-cycle milestone, we are assessing our progress and gathering insights to inform next steps. In 2025, our team began updating our approach by developing a strategic plan addendum, to be released in fiscal year 2026, ensuring we remain on track to achieve our goals by 2028.

Our partnership with United for ALICE strengthens our ability to make a meaningful impact with our funding and volunteer efforts. There are great opportunities ahead, and together with our partners and donors, we can rise to meet them and create lasting change in our community.

ALICE households earn above the poverty level but still struggle to afford basic things like housing, childcare, food, and transportation.

To increase community and state-wide understanding of those we serve, we partnered with United Ways of Georgia Association to become the 29th state to join United for ALICE. ALICE is an impact framework that delivers the data we need to better understand those in our region who are working hard but still living paycheck to paycheck, and are just one health crisis or major car repair away from catastrophe. Many people on whom our society relies everyday are identified as ALICE. They earn more than the Federal Poverty Level but not enough to make a modest household budget work. This ALICE partnership will turn data into action and reshape the dialogue on financial hardship.

211 Information & Referral Service Our 211 Information & Referral Service ensures community residents in need of support know where to turn for the help they need. United Way 211 Specialists are trained to identify and address the underlying root causes of a client’s problem(s) and connect them with a wide range of available resources that meet their needs.

211 connects clients with resources for food, healthcare, housing and utility assistance, employment services, veteran services, childcare, counseling, disaster assistance, and more.

This year alone, our team answered more than 8,000 calls where they were able to refer our clients to partner agencies, matching them with the resources that best fit their needs. Where there were gaps, our 211 and managed funds were used to support individuals with transportation, housing, and more.

The WOMEN UNITED® Transportation Fund provides women and caregivers throughout the Coastal Empire with dependable transportation so they can get to work, school, medical appointments, training opportunities, and other critical resources.

Miles Toward Empowerment

Determined to build a safer future for herself and her two daughters, one mother bravely left an abusive situation and planned to seek support out of state. While staying in a local women’s shelter, she faced one final barrier: her car needed repairs to make the journey. United Way stepped in, covering the repairs so she could take control of the road ahead and drive towards stability, surrounded by family and empowered by her own strength.

After months of determination and perseverance in her job search, a client finally landed the opportunity she’d been working toward. But without reliable transportation, she faced the risk of losing it all before it began. United Way stepped in, providing ride share credits so she could attend intake processing and confidently commute to her new job: empowered, employed, and on the road to stability.

Addressing Critical Needs Backpack Buddies

The Backpack Buddies program in Liberty and Long counties ensures that food-insecure students receive four meals to take home each weekend, providing essential support to help them thrive outside of school.

Backpacks of Love

In collaboration with New Beginnings Church and Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, this program delivers weekly backpacks of food to Bryan County Public School students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. This initiative ensures that these students have enough to eat over the weekend, supporting their well-being outside of school.

Canady’s Coat Drive

This year, we proudly continued our partnership with Canady’s Heating & Air for their fifth annual coat drive, ensuring warmth for children in need across our region during the winter months.

Car Care Clinics

Owner of S&P Automotive Specialists, Victor Gaylord, launched quarterly car care clinics to empower community members with essential vehicle maintenance skills. This initiative had five participants this year, helping them stay on the road and maintain employment.

Churches United

In a unique collaboration between United Way and local churches in Effingham County, this initiative combines resources to support housing, utilities, food, transportation, and other critical needs for vulnerable community members.

United Way handles intake and application processing, while participating churches provide financial assistance based on need and available resources. The program ensures that those in need receive timely and appropriate support.

Rental Housing Assistance Fund - RHAF

The Savannah Affordable Housing Fund, Community Housing Services Agency, and United Way of the Coastal Empire have joined forces to support Savannah renters.

Together, we are helping residents secure the rental, security, and utility deposits needed to move into housing, while also providing short-term assistance to prevent eviction or utility disconnections for those at risk. This includes support to help individuals rent a home or avoid eviction and utility interruptions.

Landings Military Family Relief Fund

Administered by United Way, this fund offers rapid financial support to military families during emergencies. It addresses needs that often fall outside standard military resources, including emergency financial crises, food vouchers, therapeutic devices, transportation, and more.

Thanks to Mr. Bob Mock’s generous pledge of $1 million, United Way of the Coastal Empire continues to address housing needs in Bryan County. This historic gift has helped fund essential support for residents facing housing challenges, including rental and mortgage assistance, partial down payments, emergency shelter, and more.

Recovery doesn’t stop after the immediate crisis. United Way of the Coastal Empire is committed to walking with our neighbors every step of the way, long after the headlines fade. Junior Achievement Colonial Group Discovery Center United Way of the Coastal Empire proudly supports the Junior Achievement Colonial Group Discovery Center in Savannah by providing a dedicated storefront where students can explore the values of philanthropy and volunteering. The center offers a dynamic simulation of adult life, teaching essential business and finance skills. Specializing in high-impact programs, the JA Discovery Center enhances financial literacy and career readiness, fostering an entrepreneurial spirit and preparing students for success in a global economy. This partnership aligns with our Strategic Plan Bold Goal to advance Financial Skills for Success.

In the last year, the JA Colonial Group Discovery Center served 12,653 students from 48 schools and nine counties.

Capacity Building for Nonprofit Partners Agency Executive Council (AEC)

United Way of the Coastal Empire’s Agency Executive Council (AEC) brings together the organizational leaders of our funded agencies. As a key forum for connection and shared leadership, the AEC fosters collaboration, encourages the exchange of insights, and strengthens the collective capacity of the nonprofit organizations driving impact across our region.

United Way Learning Circle

United Way Learning Circle (formerly the Gulfstream Learning Series) offers free sessions designed to support nonprofit leaders at any level. Made possible by Gulfstream, these workshops feature trainers from the Georgia Center for Nonprofits covering critical topics including board governance, social media best practices, HR strategies, grant writing, digital fundraising, and finance basics. This past year, 118 attendees participated in eight sessions, gaining valuable insights to strengthen their organizations.

Galaxy Digital

United Way invests in a volunteer management software called Get Connected by Galaxy Digital that helps nonprofit partners grow their engagement and community impact. The platform allows nonprofits to post volunteer opportunities online, making it easy for individuals to find and sign up for opportunities that match their interests.

Young Leaders Board Readiness Program The Board Readiness Program leads select members of United Way Young Leaders through a series of training sessions to prepare them for nonprofit board service. Graduates are connected with local nonprofits seeking board members.

Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) Nonprofit Leadership Symposium

United Way joined with many dedicated nonprofit leaders of color to design a program specifically for BIPOC executives. This nonprofit and career development program offers free training on topics such as sustainability strategies, marketing, public relations, board and staff relationships, and more. In FY25, United Way convened program alumni to reconnect, share insights, and continue strengthening leadership across the nonprofit sector.

03 CONNECT VOLUNTEERS TO CAUSES in our area that create a positive impact on our community Volunteers are at the core of United Way’s many volunteer projects and initiatives throughout the community.

They provide vital services to people in need, such as making meals for individuals experiencing food insecurity, tutoring students, cleaning up litter, meeting regularly with older adults for socialization, and more.

Volunteer contributions are essential not only to the success of these programs but also to United Way’s overall mission.

In addition to hands-on volunteer service: More than 250 dedicated leadership volunteers serve on more than a dozen advisory boards and committees, providing expertise in fundraising, marketing, and grant decisions. Their combined efforts play a crucial role in strengthening our community and advancing United Way’s mission.

Local businesses partnered with United Way to collect and distribute donations to support our community by collecting school supplies for our local students, diapers and wipes (this benefitted Shelter from the Rain), toys and wishes for the holidays (Salvation Army Angel Trees), coats for our youth (Canady’s Coats for Kids drive), canned food (Second Harvest), pet supplies, hot weather kits, and even medical supplies!

Volunteers even came together to fulfill a local 4-year-old cancer survivor’s wish for a playset at her family’s home in Richmond Hill. This effort was made possible through the Make-A-Wish Foundation and volunteers from Gulfstream.

This fiscal year (FY25), nearly 4,000 individuals contributed to our community through volunteerism. Their dedication and impact continue to strengthen our communities and advance United Way’s mission.

THE COMMUNITY FUND CAMPAIGN Dr. Yancy Ford, United Way of the Coastal Empire’s 2025 Campaign Chair and Effingham County Schools Superintendent, championed this year’s campaign theme, Educate. Elevate. Unite.

“Education is the foundation for brighter futures, but we can’t do it alone,” said Dr. Ford. “In order to elevate our students, neighbors, communities, and this region, we need everyone in the Coastal Empire to unite.”

Dr. Ford’s role in leading this campaign reflected his dedication not only to education but also to the well-being of families throughout the Coastal Empire region.

EVENTS Campaign Kickoff

United Way of the Coastal Empire kicked off the 2025 Campaign on Thursday, September 5, at a high-energy luncheon held at the Savannah Convention Center with more than 750 community leaders in attendance.

More than 50 students from Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, and Long counties participated in the Kickoff event, representing students across United Way’s service area. In keeping with Dr. Ford’s commitment to fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration, superintendents from the five-county region also participated in the program.

Additional themed kickoff events followed in Bryan, Effingham, and Liberty counties, where the energy at each gathering helped engage even more supporters across the region.

Campaign Celebration

United Way of the Coastal Empire announced the successful results of its 2024–2025 Campaign during a press conference at the rooftop at Perry Lane Hotel, celebrating the impact of community support and recognizing top corporate partners. Led by Campaign Chair Dr. Yancy Ford, the Educate, Elevate, Unite campaign raised over $8 million to support local needs, including $4.9 million for the Community Fund, $1.2 million in designated workplace and individual gifts, and $2.9 million in additional funding from grants, managed funds, disaster relief, and other restricted sources.

Women Who Rule

The 2025 Women Who Rule event, chaired by Suzanne Kirk, honored Stacy Jennings as the 2025 Woman of the Year. With 1,000 supporters in attendance, it was our largest event yet, raising an incredible net total of $105,000+ for the Women United Transportation Fund. Turkey Trot

Our 16th annual Turkey Trot was another record-breaker! Thanksgiving morning brought our largest turnout yet, with more participants than ever before. The 2024 event sold out at 1,800 participants and generated the highest fundraising total in the event’s history. Thanks to this remarkable growth, we raised $52,787 for the Community Fund.

ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY The Alexis de Tocqueville Society, named after French diplomat Alexis de Tocqueville, honors his insights on American society and philanthropy from his 1831 visit, later captured in three volumes entitled Democracy in America. Though he spent only nine months in the United States, he observed profound truths about American society, particularly the spirit of generosity and commitment to the common good. His belief that advancing the common good creates opportunities for all remains true today. Thankfully, the Tocqueville Society’s leadership givers share this belief and contribute profoundly to the Coastal Empire.

LEGACY GIVING Herschel V. Jenkins will always be remembered for the good he did in his lifetime that still benefits the Coastal Empire today, many decades later.

Jenkins was a founder of United Way of the Coastal Empire. A former publisher of the Savannah Morning News and the Savannah Evening Press, Jenkins was a community building pioneer who believed in the importance of working together to achieve great things. Jenkins’ dedication to his community was evident by his involvement in key United Way volunteer positions, serving as third Board Chair and fourth Campaign Chair.

In 1955, Jenkins set aside a trust of $500,000 for United Way which has now grown to nearly $20 million. The principal of this irrevocable trust will remain untapped, but a percentage of the income it generates covers a significant part of our United Way’s administrative and fundraising costs, depending on investment performance.

Because of his vision and generosity, we can assure our donors that most – and sometimes all – of their donations are used in service to the people of the Coastal Empire.
