Global Endowment

The UWC Endowment Fund Launched in January 2024, The UWC Endowment Fund is a dedicated financial management fund established to ensure a sustainable future for UWC scholarships.

Every year, UWC raises funds to provide scholarships for students, and many UWC Colleges have chosen to join the UWC Endowment Fund to make a pool of forever scholarships.

Fund Management The UWC Endowment Fund is managed on a not-for-profit basis by the UWC Endowment Management Investment Team, regulated by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority and overseen by an independent Board. The funds will be invested in financial markets with a target 7% growth and 3-5% distribution.

Inspired Giving

To ensure we can keep supporting students, the UWC Endowment Fund will become a perpetual source of funding and is open to all UWC Colleges, the UWC International Office and National Committees. It will enable us to build on our mission and maintain multi-generational equity by funding our scholarship programme into the future.

The UWC Endowment belongs to current and future students and will provide needs-assessed scholarships to deserving students in perpetuity.

In the first year, the UWC Endowment Fund has grown to almost $53 million USD. Our goal is to increase this to $300 million USD and to eventually reach $2 billion USD.

A major gift from long-term UWC supporters and philanthropists, Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo launched the UWC Endowment Fund.

The van Otterloo’s $13 million gift was provided to enable UWC schools and colleges and UWC International to launch or grow their own endowments funds.

If we somehow could find a way so that UWC could become several hundred schools with the same mission, with the same idea of bringing students together from all these cultures and backgrounds, education would enable a better world.

Our Goal $5 million The UWC Atlantic Forever Scholarship Challenge 2025 is a transformative fundraising initiative to create four scholarships at UWC Atlantic - forever.

Raising $5 million by 30th November will unlock $2.25 million in match funding and allow us to invest in the UWC Endowment Fund.

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the van Otterloo family and an anonymous donor, every gift received by 30th November will go even further.

We have already started this challenge. Jill Longson (AC’81 and Chair of our Board) and Colin Habgood have pledged a matching donation to encourage others to give.

The first $800,000 raised will be matched 100%, doubling every dollar - meaning every $100,000 donated becomes $200,000.

Additional donations on top of that, will still receive a remarkable 50% match, further amplifying their impact.

With this match funding, we have a unique opportunity to nearly double UWC Atlantic’s endowment funding and join together as a community to ensure a future where financial barriers never stand in the way of talent and potential.

The impact of a scholarship Growing up as an Afghan refugee, bloodshed was never far from Assma’s life.

In August 2021, Assma’s education was cut short when the ruling parties in her country and the laws on female education changed.

I was introduced to UWC by school friends, and when my application was successful to study at UWC Atlantic it felt like a ‘ray of hope’ came back into my life.

Receiving a scholarship to UWC Atlantic has allowed me once again plan for my future, to move on, restart my education and chase my dreams.”

Why endow scholarships?

Annual scholarship funding requires renewal each year and risks continuity in supporting students.

By making an endowed gift, you ensure scholarships are funded forever, fostering sustainability and leaving a meaningful legacy for future generations.

Who can join the endowment?

The UWC Endowment Fund is open to UWC entities only. Assets invested and distributions remain the property of the investing UWC entity. Tax-efficient giving may be possible for you.

The first-year highlights of the UWC Endowment Fund include: $1.1 million, the equivalent to 3% of the Fund’s average, was distributed to participating schools and colleges.

This will finance at least 50 fully-funded scholarships across the UWC system, enabling talented but financially constrained students to attend UWC.

Colin and I made this decision because we are deeply committed to ensuring the longterm financial sustainability of UWC Atlantic, particularly encouraging and supporting the deliberate diversity of our students that makes the UWC experience so special.
