As alumni, parents and friends of UWC Atlantic, you are all potential changemakers for a vibrant and unique community that nurtures bridge builders as its primary purpose - and as we ourselves continue to change and evolve as a College, we are looking to you to share in, and to help shape, our direction of travel.
A
s we take UWC Atlantic towards its 60th Anniversary in 2022, we are asking for your commitment to help us deliver the next phase of innovation. We are immensely proud of what we have achieved so far, but we know we can, and must, do more if we are to develop programmes, pedagogy and practice to meet 21st Century challenges, continue our pioneering educational tradition, nurture and harness the purpose and potential of a deliberately diverse student body and protect and preserve the fabric of our unique and magical campus in a sustainable way. Our focus is on our People, Purpose and Place.
Our People - improving the diversity of our student intake and our staff who bring another dimension to the campus Our Purpose - putting in place a transformational educational offering and inspiring others to adopt it Our Place - upgrading a unique medieval castle and its surrounding campus to provide the right ‘Laboratory for Learning’ It is a bold ambition. We do need to build on our strengths and develop support and we will be asking our alumni to help us achieve our goals, as that will be something we will all be able to celebrate. Letter from The Principal
I
am immensely proud of our story and of the powerful traditions of UWC Atlantic that have shaped the College physically, socially and intellectually. We continue to embrace the spirit of those pioneers who not only launched the College in 1962 and the UWC movement in 1967 but in 1968 co-created the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) which is now taught the world over. In a world more fractured and fragile than ever with environmental, political, financial and social change deepening the chasm between the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’, the IBDP has to evolve and work much harder. The challenges of the 21st Century - climate change, global migration of people, polarisation, extremism, inequality, intolerance, and natural resource depletion - demand people with radical, changemaking thinking who look to build bridges not walls. That mindset defines our students, alongside a passion to serve society in a way that is bold, forwardlooking and unrestrained. I am very fortunate to lead a unique College community that aspires to imagine and shape the world as it ‘should be’. At its foundation, UWC Atlantic was described by The Times as ‘the most exciting experiment in education since the Second World War.’ That experiment not only needs to continue, but needs to evolve. Aspiration and ambition is in our DNA, and we want to reclaim our leadership in experimentation.

We are already spearheading the development of the new IBDP and we want to ensure that we have the perfect environment - physically, culturally, socially and financially - to deliver it. I am passionate and excited about our ambitions for UWC Atlantic over the next decade. We want to do better and success will mean that we have created sustainable impact in a number of critical areas: with students, nurturing them with care, giving them authentic responsibility and ensuring that their personal journey with us is a transformative one; with staff, creating a culture and environment in which they can aspire to and achieve the highest standards; with alumni, empowering them to connect, engage and support in ways that are meaningful to them and which underpin the development of the College; and with the wider movement, actively living the UWC values and delivering to the UWC mission. Our goal is simple: to reclaim our leadership in values-based international education. We hope that with your continued support we will be able to achieve our ambition and to be able to share our success across our wider College community.

s we approach our 60th anniversary in 2022 and then look forward again to the next 60 years, we must continue to be guided by our three founding principles - to be an innovator in education, to provide opportunity to deserving students from around the world to access this education irrespective of ability to pay, and for this learning to take place in a unique and exceptional setting where the entire campus is the classroom.

We need to ensure we continue to build enduring circles of support, sharing and celebrating in order to sustain UWC Atlantic and to help us shape the world around us in the ‘way it should be.’

Essential Atlantic Essential Atlantic enables us to select and support a distinct and deliberately diverse student population drawn together from around the world based on their demonstrated promise and potential. This is our core mandate.
O
ur aspiration is to fully fund 50% of our students within the next three years and 75% in the next 10 years. We are reaffirming our commitment to our valued National Committee system, to admission based on demonstrated promise and potential, regardless of ability to pay and to scholarships based on demonstrated need. This is our beating heart and is what sets us apart. Your gift is central to achieving our ambitions, and supporting students to achieve theirs.

ÂŁ32,000 would contribute towards a scholarship for one student for a year
I am Patrick Oketcho, a student from Uganda, who benefited from a scholarship to UWC Atlantic, thanks to a College supporter and as part of an association with a local NGO. I am so grateful to the donor for being the changemaker in my life. It has allowed me to meet new people and create bonds I would never wish to break – and this within such a short period of time. With my UWC Atlantic friends from Japan and Canada, I returned to my native Tororo region to establish a farm to grow maize next to my old school. We want to encourage children to stay at the school, by ensuring they all have enough food to eat so that they can concentrate on their studies and develop into healthy adults, and by leading a programme of various fun activities. Thank you for your support.

Educate Atlantic Educate Atlantic will be used to help meet the current students’ educational needs and the College’s ambitious and exciting plans to develop the curriculum for future students.
W
e are currently re-imagining the International Baccalaureate to make it more relevant and resonant for today’s society. In doing so, we will become the ‘go to’ educators, the thought leaders, the pioneers for real change - passionate, engaged, creative and disruptive - setting a new, agile educational agenda that has real influence in today’s, and tomorrow’s complex and changing world. We want to set the pace and set the standard for others to follow.

£20,000 will help us to develop a pilot curriculum for collaborative place based, project based, mission based learning
I am Mikki Korodimou, Project Co-Ordinator for collaborative place based, project based, mission based learning. It is hugely exciting to be actively engaging with current students in the development of the College’s curriculum, through an exciting, experimental new prototype course and I am enormously grateful for the generous financial support we have received to date to get the programme off the ground. Offering an innovative approach to education, the programme emphasises experiential and project-based learning alongside a strong solutions-oriented and skills-development methodology, nurturing students as open-minded, empathetic, and resilient young adults who learn to think critically about the world around them and to apply cross interdisciplinary thinking to solve complex issues. It is an exciting and hugely impactful way forward. Thank you for your support.

e want our community to inspire - and to be inspired. UWC Atlantic is committed to strengthening the connections between current students and alumni, and alumni, their networks and the College - a virtual and purposeful networking circle. For example, we are developing a formal Mentoring Scheme to build awareness in students of new opportunities and new directions; to improve their confidence and skills; and to help them develop insight into life at their chosen university, or in their career.

We are expanding the opportunities for you to engage with us in a way that is meaningful for you and to support you in ‘living the UWC mission and values’. We are developing a new calendar of activities including lectures, alumni project weeks, a mentoring programme, Ideas Hubs and volunteering initiatives - all of which will strengthen relationships within the College community and contribute to our future success. C
apital Atlantic is a funding stream for the vital financial support we need to protect our historic buildings, to preserve the magical fabric of our beautiful campus, and to develop the projects that will enable us to build on and leverage those assets to ensure we have 21st Century living and learning spaces that can more effectively, efficiently and sustainably showcase the UWC Atlantic experience. A sense of place has always been at the core of the student experience at UWC Atlantic. Students from more than 90 countries come together every year to live and work in our unique ‘Laboratory for Learning’ and we are always striving to make improvements to the vital infrastructure to support our spectacular and unique 122-acre campus.
We are currently developing the concept of a new STEM Hub (in our world that’s Science, Technology, Environment and Mathematics); we are reimagining the Academic block as a ‘multi-purpose’ Academic Precinct to include 21st Century classrooms and discussion/ study spaces and developing an outdoor amphitheatre. We are renovating the Music Department (with a new Recording Studio and improved practice and performance spaces) and aligning this creative space to enhance our Arts provision. We have already made a start with the development of two new student residences, each designed to accommodate 48 students and houseparents, in a traditional Welsh Long House design contrasting with contemporary styled interiors. Accommodation for students centres around dormitory style bedrooms for four students, modern bathrooms complemented by bright, attractive study areas, day rooms and kitchens.

Green Atlantic £1,500 will fund our tree planting initiative across the campus to capture carbon and improve our air quality
G
reen Atlantic, is the heart of the College’s 10 year strategy, embedding sustainability and an eco-friendly approach into everything we do and ensuring we truly ‘live the UWC values’. We work closely with students on our Sustainability Committee (SUSCo) and indeed learn from them, on how to tackle life-changing environmental issues. We aspire to achieve sustainability best practice in everything we do - from more plant-based eating and more efficient waste recycling, re-use and re-purposing, to improving our energy use. We will also develop a more positive environmental footprint and be a responsible business role model for our students as well as an exemplar for sustainability within the wider community, promoting respect for the environment and our place within it.

I am Seraj Abo Sabbah, an Arab student from Palestine living in Lebanon. Thanks to the support of a UWC Atlantic donor, I secured a scholarship to the College, an opportunity that has allowed my dreams to come true. I have interacted with people like myself, refugees living in a South Wales refugee centre, and participated in a College Community Project in the Czech Republic supporting Roma children. I have realised that we don’t need to understand each other’s languages to help one another; whatever our colour, religion or language, we are all united by a common humanity, a desire for a better life and to make the world a better place. After two years at UWC Atlantic, I have become the world citizen that I was seeking in everyone’s eyes, and in everyone’s stories. The world is full of stories of people who are forgotten, people who have simple dreams. Whether we know each other or not, we can still help one another; despite the barriers between us, we can still do something to change the world. Without such an opportunity, I would not be in a position to continue my education in Canada. But it is so much more than that; I want to give something back to my community. My Chinese friend from UWC Atlantic and I returned to the refugee camp I grew up in, to work with my old school to teach students how to build a hydroponics system to allow the children to grow fruit to sell. The profits allow the school to purchase supplies and provide the children with a healthier diet. I held a camera for the first time at UWC Atlantic and I used my new digital photography skills to document the trip and give people a greater insight into life in a refugee camp in Lebanon.
