LATIN AMERICAN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME SUPPORTING LATIN AMERICAN STUDENTS AT UWC ATLANTIC

THE PROGRAMME Under UWC Atlantic’s newly launched 10 year strategy, we aim to build a deliberately diverse student population in respect of culture, nationality, socio-economic background, religious belief and physical ability. Thanks to one of the world’s most comprehensive scholarship programmes (the equivalent of 37% of our students are on a full scholarship), refugees, those from developing countries, regions of conflict, deprived and disadvantaged backgrounds study, live and learn alongside children of royalty, diplomats and entrepreneurs. We want to broaden and apply this distinctive educational philosophy and ethos within the Latin American countries including South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean to reflect the diversity of the regions’ youth. Our aim is to strengthen our Latin American Scholarship Programme and support talented but disadvantaged students to study the two year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at the college. We aim to support ten students per annum from Latin American countries on full scholarships at the college. These students will be identified and selected by our Latin American UWC National Committees. 2
STRONG FOUNDATIONS UWC Atlantic College has educated approximately 452 Latin American scholars since it was established in 1962 with many eventually returning home to live and support their communities.
Our alumni are also embedded in some of the most powerful organisations and political administrations in the world – from the Chinese and US Governments, to top banks and multinational corporations including the UN, World Bank, EBRD, Bank of Africa, Nokia, Royal Dutch Shell, Mizuho, to leading NGOs such as Medicins Sans Frontieres and VSO.
Recent graduates have been offered places at leading UK and US Universities and are determined to eventually return to their countries of origin.
The Latin American Scholarship Programme will allow the college to continue providing a transformative educational experience to worthy and deserving young people from this region who bring so much energy and life to our campus.

FINANCIAL PROPOSAL For the ten students we hope will join us for 2024 entry, the total value of the Scholarship Programme will be £814,680. This will include nine full scholarships and one partial scholarship. These costs would cover: Full board and tuition Annual return flights Exam fees Modest termly pocket money allowance Visa costs University admissions costs Other essential items like laptops and warm winter clothes Over the next 10 years we will aim to increase this figure as we work towards achieving the equivalent of 60% of students on a full scholarship. UWC Atlantic will assume responsibility for the coordination of the programme and manage all communications with UWC National Committees concerning student selections and admissions. We will also coordinate the financial management for the programme’s implementation.

CAN YOU SHARE OUR DREAM? By sponsoring a Latin American scholar at the college, donors will receive regular communications and an opportunity to share in your sponsored student’s progress. You will also be invited to join our Donor Circles and acknowledged in our Annual Review and other college publications.
AC is such an intense experience that very strong bonds are created with the people you love who are people capable of transforming a bad day into a beautiful one. I learned to listen to myself and respect my limits, to prioritise certain things over others, to live with people with habits and cultures totally different from mine and to value time because it flies.

SUPPPORT DELIBERATE DIVERSITY UWC Atlantic is resolutely committed to providing a strong scholarship programme, creating an authentically diverse student body which lies at the heart of the unique educational experience we provide. Over the next ten years, our aim is to ensure that 60% of our students are in receipt of a full scholarship. We have successfully created strategic and geographically-focused partnerships that allow for regular and sustainable presence at the college for students from Asia, Northern Europe, North America and the Middle East – with donors and generous philanthropists enjoying regular communication with individual students and sharing students’ progress and remarkable journies at the college. The strategy moving forward is to strengthen partnerships in support of scholarships for Latin American students at the college through our Latin American Scholarship Programme. We do hope that prospective donors will wish to work with us to grow its commitment to this continent".
