In many ways the two years that students spend here is a curious intersection of very different life journeys.

Our students and staff come from all over the world, spend time here together in Montezuma, and then continue their journeys to college, career, family, and community.

In this issue of Kaleidoscope, you will encounter a number of journeys. Kavi’s journey from Iraq to UWCUSA. Noor’s journey from land-locked Montezuma to the wide-open sea, working with refugees and other displaced people. We look for journeys both like and unlike our own, perhaps to validate what we know and to imagine and understand what we don’t. Our students compare their journeys with each other when they arrive here. At first they ask “Where are you from?” With time they learn to refine the question, asking “How did you get here?” We know that how we make sense of our journeys and, more importantly, how we are moved by the journeys of others, deepens our humanity and increases our compassion.

I want to thank everyone who supports our students in their journeys to UWC-USA and beyond. There are so many stories of alumni sharing their expertise and resources, donors supporting specific initiatives, and parents encouraging students to make the most of their time here. Our journey as an institution wouldn’t be possible without them.

I hope you enjoy the stories in this issue of Kaleidoscope. I look forward to when our journeys intersect here on campus or on the road.

This spring, Noor received the 2018 Giulio Regeni Alumni Impact Award from UWC-USA. She was honored for her work with humanitarian issues ranging from gender-based violence in Nairobi, Kenya, to search-and-rescue missions on the Mediterranean Sea. Addressing graduates in May, she reminded them that migration is a natural phenomenon that has always existed, a phenomenon that is valuable in building bridges between people, nations, and cultures.

“You are part of those streams, of those routes, of the migratory existence of humanity. You are the living proof of migration’s undeniable significance in building peace,” she said at the commencement ceremony.

Peace-building for Noor started at UWC-USA when she met classmates from around the world who shared their stories and encouraged her to examine her own. Dutch traditions like Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), a prominent Christmas character, looked different when examined through the lens of global slavery. Crises like the IsraeliPalestinian conflict were more complicated than she expected.

After graduation, Noor saw that complexity firsthand when she visited classmates who lived in Israel and the West Bank. Later, she pursued two internships related to Palestinian refugees while she was a university student in Germany. Shocked by what she observed in a refugee settlement near Nablus, a city in the West Bank, she asked a university classmate to help her organize a conference that gave both Israeli and Palestinian speakers opportunities to share their views. A day before the conference, it was canceled because of pressure from a political group.

At that point, Noor recognized that not every community values uncomfortable, challenging conversations.

“At UWC, it made sense to have those discussions. In the real world, it’s difficult to live with gray. The physical and mental barriers between those two sides was too wide,” she says.

Still, the experience lit within Noor a desire to learn as much as possible about development and humanitarian work. She pursued her master’s degree in the field of public health and gender studies in Geneva.

“It was the first time I found something I was passionate about,” Noor says. “I loved reading about, learning about, and talking about

development issues.”

For her thesis, she spent six months in Kenya where she focused on sexual violence, interviewing police officers, survivors, and those who worked with them. She also interned at a Kenyan women’s hospital.

Noor’s work caught the attention of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, which hired her as a humanitarian affairs officer.

Her first mission was in Congo, with a standard MSF project: a hospital with several outreach clinics. The relatively calm post gave her room to learn the skills needed to bear witness and report on the impact of conflict, as well as advocate for the people affected by it.

As in Kenya, Noor listened carefully to the stories and soaked up knowledge from the Congolese, who made up 90 percent of the MSF staff. Those connections became valuable when she and a colleague, Per-Erik Eriksson of Sweden, were encouraged to set up an inaugural UWC national committee in Congo.

FUTURE-CHANGING COURSEWORK This fall, Jacob Martinez took his first college course. For many, that’s an expected milestone.

For Martinez, it was an unexpected achievement.

He’s a middle school dropout who is incarcerated at a state-operated youth detention facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“When I was younger, I never thought I’d make it this far, to be honest,” the 20-year-old says.

“I’m ready to take this next step and to keep pushing myself.”

Martinez has reason to be confident: He’s prepared. Last spring, he took a weekly class taught remotely from UWC-USA. The course, Transition and Future Planning, taught young men at Nuevo Camino Youth Center about education and work options for life after release. They practiced applying to community college and filling out job applications, among other practical career-readiness skills.

For Martinez, the class inspired him to register for one online fine arts course at a community college. He dreams of earning a degree in music.

“Just knowing there are lots of options out there in the world is helpful,” Martinez says.

BY CARL-MARTIN NELSON, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS Cesar Cervantes joined the UWC-USA community this summer as the new dean of experiential education and residential life. He comes to Montezuma with a strong background in both education and residential life having most recently served as the senior assistant dean of students at Colorado College.

Cesar and his wife Stephanie, along with their new baby daughter Isela, moved to Las Vegas this summer and are quickly making a home in New Mexico.

Originally from El Paso, Cesar earned a tennis scholarship and attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas playing varsity tennis all four years.

He credits his academic experience while at St. Mary’s with opening his eyes about the power of education and the importance of good questions. “As an undergraduate I started taking introductory philosophy classes. It was there that I felt for the first time that I had agency in my own education.

It was the first time I had real dialogue with my classmates and faculty members about questions—not just about answers—that opened up every possibility under the sun.”

Since his years as an undergraduate, Cesar has continued to refine his understanding of what makes a great education and the best ways to help students take responsibility for their learning and themselves. He sees himself as a person who supports students in their learning, someone who helps students evaluate or re-evaluate the decisions they make. “Community

Cesar grew up in a family with strong ties to Mexico and that background gives him a powerful perspective for his work with students coming from other countries. “I’m a self-proclaimed border boy. My parents were Mexican immigrants who came to the U.S. very young and saw opportunity, seized it, and instilled that value in their children.” He understands the challenges of being immersed in one culture at home and another at school. But at the same time, he also sees the opportunities this creates for students to be flexible, nimble, and able to question the power dynamics between different groups of people.

“One of the most important memories I have is of driving west out of El Paso on U.S. Interstate 10,” Cesar recalls. “I remember looking to the right and seeing the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) with gleaming buildings and remarkable Bhutanese architecture. It’s clearly a place of opportunity and possibility. Then looking to the left and seeing across the highway and the Rio Grande a community of extreme poverty. It just makes you ask ‘Why does it have to be like this?’”

These kinds of questions, and the pursuit of the answers, make UWC-USA a perfect place for Cesar at this point in his life’s journey.

Rachel wasn’t surprised to hear that Ian’s experience was basically problem-free.

“I think the success of his participation in the Wilderness Program is directly related to his ability to independently manage his sugar intake and insulin

Communities also experience hate through cruel and discriminatory policies: banishing immigrants and separating them from their families because they do not have papers; depriving the elderly, poor, communities of color and people with disabilities of health care; and threatening to send refugees home where they would face an uncertain future.

A ME R I C A N H AT E?

As I traveled the country and met with survivors in their homes, houses of worship, and community centers, I saw an extraordinary amount of pain, hurt, and suffering. But I also saw plenty of resilience, too.

Survivors are not recoiling or abandoning hope. They are coming together, rebuilding their lives, and advocating for a better future for us all. Their communities are following their example by reaching across divides, building stronger coalitions, and centering young people and women of color in the fight against hate and state violence.

Just weeks into my journey, I quickly learned that there is a spirit of love and joy in these communities that hate cannot destroy—a spirit that originates and endures because of the power of community.

This same community exists at the United World College in New Mexico. That’s why I accepted a fellowship in residence at the school just weeks before my book manuscript was due. I knew that the community, and the love and care they have for one another, would motivate me to complete my book American Hate: Survivors Speak Out. And that’s precisely what happened. When I taught class, the students would ask about hate violence and how they could help curb it. When I met with the school Amnesty International chapter, the students began planning a program on campus where their peers affected by the travel ban could share their stories. When I spoke at the school assembly about civil rights abuses, the students described their volunteer work in local detention centers.

Other times, it was more subtle. I can’t remember the number of times I saw students check in on folks who were sitting alone during a meal or otherwise by themselves.

Everyone felt included. Everyone belonged.

STUDENT JOURNEYS I left my home in the capital city of culture in the Kurdistan region of Iraq to attend the United World College–USA in New Mexico’s land of enchantment. My name is Kavi Othman Ali and I am a 19-year-old wanderer in search of meaning.

In my city, I was a young and cheerful female activist who was both criticized and looked down upon because of my outgoing personality. I was always ambitious and thirsty for more challenges, anything that pushed my limits and deepened my already not-so-common ideologies. I had already experienced a lot for an 18-year-old in Iraq, including raising my two younger sisters to receiving multiple standing ovations and teaching myself to speak the Korean language. And then there was everything else in between.

I always felt that I was not destined to remain in one place for my entire life and that I needed a place to explore and to learn concepts that I couldn’t in my small hometown and environment. That includes internationalism, intercultural communication, developing a compassion for the world as one, and the like. That’s when UWC crossed my path and became my destiny.

I left my home, family, and culture, which I celebrated and was very proud of, to take on this new challenge that I had wanted so badly for so long. I just never knew such a thing actually existed, something so ideal for me. At least that is what I thought.

I took on this journey without gathering information about the place, people, or curriculum. I was ready to go but had some unmet expectations. Meeting people from around the world is not something one forgets to appreciate every single day at UWC-USA, but more important, expanding my perspective from a semi-global one to a global one has been very valuable.

My dorm, 7,000 miles away from home, eventually became a new kind of home I never thought possible. Difficult at first, I soon fell in love with my classes and what I was learning at UWC-USA.

CLASS OF 1995 Daniel (Dan) Darling published his first novel, Archaeopteryx. This novel is set in New Mexico and deals with justice issues surrounding border migration.

Eyal Block-Diamant lives in Yehud, Israel. Eyal is inspired by working with teenagers and believing he can make a difference in their lives by making them “look” and see things they would not see themselves.

CLASS OF 1996 Laura Anderson has been recently appointed the new head of the portfolio unit at Power Generation Services— Controls and Digitalization (PS CD). Laura lives in Florida and always gives credit to UWCUSA for her determination to succeed in the world.

Ariel Hearne Maddocks lives in Boston with her husband, Chris, and kids, Elliott and Claire. They had a great summer and loved a road trip through the Southwest after the Montezuma reunion.

4 Edgar Blanco-Rosete still lives in Barcelona, Spain. He stopped coaching football to spend all his free time with his daughter Vera (almost 2 years old). He also has a new job working for a casino system company in the marketing area. This past summer, Cindy Picard visited from Madrid.

He works as associate professor of English and linguistics at the regional university, and he enjoys teaching and occasionally traveling to conferences.

Last summer, he briefly met with Alexa Melkman ’99 and Yehia El-Decken ’99.

Julianne Fraser lives in Keene Valley, New York. Today, Julianne is inspired by teaching Spanish to elementary school students. “I see a kindergarten student in the hallway and they say, ‘Hola, Maestra!’ and it makes me smile!” she says.

7 Lena (Boesser-Koschmann) Pace got married in June to Devin Pace. He is an engineering student and the lab coordinator for the physics department at the University of Colorado in Denver. They live in north Denver with their new puppy, Stella, a rescued Doberman mix. Lena works for the National Park Service at the Intermountain Regional Office.

Pierre Monteux lives in his hometown near Cannes, France. While he is not fond of his job, he finds comfort in the mountains where he cycles often. In 2018, he had

a chance to travel to Australia and cycle with Dan Wilkins ’97 and Michele Kent. He also got a chance to ride in California and Utah after the reunion this summer in the United States. “Later this year, I hope to ride in the Reunion Island [in France],” Pierre says.

“Next year, I plan to cycle maybe in Peru and Scotland.”

The past four summers she has spent at UWC ISAK Japan as part of the Summer School team facilitating the leadership program, providing the students with tools to become self-confident and take charge of positive change. She now is looking into working in Tokyo, Japan for a startup focusing on making work life happier for individual fulfillment and company success in Japan.

CLASS OF 2012 2 Andrew Nalani delivered a speech about his story of transformation and what it means to be a young African changemaker at the Goalkeepers event. The event is convened by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as a campaign to accelerate progress toward the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). It occurs during the U.N. Summit in New York City. This year, the event highlighted the role that young people, activists, and educators play in advancing progress toward

the SDG, and Andrew shared the stage with Bill Gates!

Ana Dougherty is currently a research and impact associate with Global Partnerships. “I am working for Global Partnerships through the Princeton in Latin America Fellowship,” she says.

“I conduct site visits, research, and impact analysis for social investments designed to expand opportunity for people living in poverty across Latin America and the Caribbean.”

In addition to the growth and development of our students and programs outlined in the president's letter, we have much to celebrate at UWC-USA. With everyone’s help, we had another successful Annual Fund campaign, with the Davis Family Challenge Grant providing an additional $2 million for scholarships and programs. And special thanks to our growing alumni community: Since 2014, alumni giving has increased by 33 percent, the average gift size has increased by 12 percent, and participation has ranged from 27 percent to 36 percent.

We are starting to look ahead to the 50th anniversary of UWC-USA and how we can ensure our school is better, stronger, and can deliver the UWC mission even more effectively in the next 50 years.

I know that our 50th is still 14 years away, but we will need that time to do justice to our mission and the challenges we face. To stimulate our thinking over the past year, we have done important work in three areas: • Our strategic plan – with a focus on strengthening our program and the UWC experience and the role that everyone needs to play.

• A master plan for our campus – evaluating how we make our aging campus more sustainable and mission-aligned. And making sure our significant annual maintenance expenses are being put to good use.

• Outlines of a capital campaign – beginning to understand the financial implications of staying sustainable and relevant over the next 50 years.

Over the coming months (and years!), you will be hearing more about these plans. And we will be looking for your guidance, creativity, and support as our thinking evolves.

In today’s world, UWC is needed more than ever. And we need you to make sure UWC-USA is leading the way. So please stay engaged, give us your thoughts, visit the campus, live our values, and spread the word.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

G R E E T I N GS FRO M M O NT E ZU M A! The past year has been excellent in three very specific ways.

First, we graduated another wonderful cohort of bright, motivated students. These future citizens and leaders are ready to take on a variety of important challenges. They will do so with courage, confidence, and compassion. We celebrate their accomplishment and wish them well as they launch!

Second, our work to strengthen our foundation is gaining momentum. We committed to greater alignment of mission and resource allocation through restructuring, salary reduction at the leadership level, a compensation and market study to guide decisions around equity and income inequality, zerobased budgeting to assess expenditures more strategically, and targeted staffing at the program level. As you'll read from the treasurer's report, financial sustainability is a top priority of the Board of Trustees. So too is living our mission in the administrative decisions we make every day.

Our multiyear financial projections are healthier, too. Careful attention to expenditures combined with the generosity of our faculty (100 percent giving to the Annual Fund!), staff, alumni, friends, and board made a real difference this past year. So did new friends to UWC-USA. The Davis family has challenged us to give more and do more on behalf of our students and the

movement. We take this wonderful challenge seriously. We are inspired and determined to live up to the confidence it expresses. It feels great to be pulling together when the world seems to be moving apart.

On the program side, we streamlined experiential education for greater impact on our students and communities. Going forward, we will focus on four “signature programs.” Why? So our students can experience the power to make a lasting difference right where they are. Wherever they are. Wilderness, Constructive Engagement of Conflict, Arts and Culture, and Sustainability will be our students’ proving ground. So will residential life, where we are focused on social and emotional learning and restorative justice programming as important pillars of a diverse community dedicated to peace and the conditions that make it possible.

Third, we are laying the foundation to innovate for impact. As Steve mentions in his letter, we began work this past year on strategic, campus, and campaign plans. All focus on mission alignment. All focus on sustainability. All focus on creating a powerful and empowering place-based UWC-USA experience.

In the coming year, we will develop these plans. We will need your help, and we will reach out to get it. Stay tuned for exciting opportunities to give back by thinking forward!

There are many other ways we are gaining momentum as a school, a community, a movement. I have enjoyed sharing our forward motion with alumni and friends as I travel. I have also enjoyed hosting people here in Montezuma this past year.

Highlights included hosting Shelby and Gale Davis at graduation and welcoming the largest reunion ever back to Montezuma this summer. Shelby and Gale inspired all of us. It was great to meet alumni, their families, and many faculty and staff who have since moved on from UWC-USA. Hearing the ways they continue to live the mission was energizing and made me feel grateful to be part of the UWC movement. Our UWC community is awake to the challenges of this moment in world history. UWC is the answer. It is up to us to speak it loudly.

Thank you for making this important educational experience possible for so many young people and for helping us to launch another cohort of changemakers poised to make a positive difference in the world.

FINANCIAL REPORT

G R E E T I N GS FRO M H O N G KO N G , In the first letter I wrote as treasurer two years ago, I addressed a number of important details about the finances of UWC-USA. Specifically, I drew attention to the following facts: • Delivering a UWC education is simply expensive. The annual cost to educate a single student for one year is over $50,000.

• The tuition that students pay only covers a small share of the cost of the program for that student; the remaining two-thirds are paid for by our Annual Fund and generous donors like Shelby Davis and our alumni and friends.

• UWC-USA historically was balancing its budget in part by deferring spending on major capital projects. These are projects that only get more expensive as they wait to be addressed.

I am pleased to report that we have made significant progress in all three of the areas in this fiscal year (2017-18) for the following reasons: • With the support of a remarkable number of alumni and friends, we met the Davis Family Challenge Grant for the first year. Because we raised more than $2 million in our Annual Fund in 2018, we were awarded a $2 million match through the generosity of the Davis family. The Annual Fund is accounted for as part of the Gifts to Operations.

The Annual Fund increased by an amazing 17% over last year. This represented an amazing 17 percent increase in giving over last year.

• Under the leadership of the administration, the school developed an even greater costconscious mindset that resulted in a seven percent reduction in total operating expenses.

• Despite an increase in capital expenditures (related to deferred maintenance), our cost-conscious mindset has helped us realize a small budget surplus of $29,933.

Achieving financial sustainability while delivering a high-quality education has always been a key priority for the Board of Trustees, and we are encouraged that we are taking strides in the right direction. As long as we continue to match the Davis Family Challenge Grant, we will have four years to achieve long-term structural financial sustainability. As we look ahead to our 50th anniversary, however, we still have a tremendous amount of work to do. We know that to fully fund our scholarships and our operations—especially after the Davis Family Challenge Grant expires in four years—will require additional fundraising for our endowment. Further, the recently completed campus master plan indicates even more funds necessary to provide a space for our students to live, work, and learn.

UWC-USA was one of the very first International Baccalaureate (IB) schools in the United States and has been offering IB teacher workshops since 1992. Each summer, more than five hundred teachers participate in seminars led by workshop leaders employed by UWC-USA to help IB teachers from around the world. “We are essentially pioneers in IB education in the U.S.” says Eyad Shabaneh, Director of the IB Teacher Training Programs. “With growing interest in the IB curriculum, we continue to have strong enrollment.”

While the educator program is located off campus, students from around the world attend the Global Leadership Forum (GLF), a recognized UWC short course in Montezuma. The 50 students who attended this summer came from 16 countries and were led by eight staff members. Jason Brewer, GLF director, believes that the program is an important feeder program for the UWC movement. “The students who attend GLF are interesting applicants for the Davis Scholarships here at UWC-USA and for National Committees around the world.”

Each summer, GLF participants work on the school’s farm, hike in the mountains, complete projects with other teens from around the world, and develop community projects that they implement when they return home.

The Bartos Institute for the Constructive Engagement of Conflict provides students with the skills to mediate differences between people with different backgrounds— a fundamental skill for a UWC student. The arts and culture program helps students learn about and explore the cultural differences between community members and challenges them to find new ways to express their values and experiences. Sustainability is central to the UWC mission, and an important part of our work is to become good stewards of the world we inhabit. And Wilderness provides opportunities for students to challenge themselves, develop leadership skills, and cultivate a keener appreciation of the natural world.

The best one will balance what you wish to accomplish for yourself, your family, and your charitable interests in your overall estate and financial plans.

BEQUESTS The simplest way to make a planned gift is to name UWC-USA in your will.

You can make a bequest of a certain dollar amount, a particular piece of property, a percentage of your estate, or a “residual” (what is left after making specific provisions for loved ones).
