he University of West Alabama Receives Megan Montgomery oundation Grant to Continue Comprehensive Sexual Assault revention Program

heUniversityofWestAlabama(UWA)isthrilledtoannounce hereceiptoftheMeganMontgomeryFoundationGrant, otaling$10,000.ThisgenerousgrantwillfundTigerP.A.W. Prevention,Awareness,Well-Being),acomprehensivesexual ssaultpreventionprogram.Theprogram,initiatedbythe OfficeofDeanofStudents,aimstoeducateandempowerthe UWAcommunityinpreventingsexualviolence.

A Vital Initiative

Withalarmingstatisticssurroundingcampussexualviolence,theneedforeffectiveprevention strategieshasneverbeenmorecritical.TheTigerP.A.W.programwillplayacrucialrolein educatingtheUWAfamilyonhowtobecomeactivelyengagedinpreventingsexualassault. Througheducationalspeakersandworkshops,studentswillgaintheconfidenceandknowledgeto lookoutfortheirfriends,speakupaboutsexualviolence,andtakestepstoincreasepersonal safety."Thestatisticscontinuetobestaggeringconcerningcampussexualviolence,anditisupto ustoeducatestudentstobeapartofthesolution,"emphasizedByronThetfordtheDeanof Students."ThisgrantfromtheMeganMontgomeryFoundationallowsustotakesignificantsteps towardcreatingasaferandmoreinformedcampuscommunity."

Program Goals and Impact

TigerP.A.W.isdesignedtoaddressseveralcriticalareas:

TheimpactofTigerP.A.W.willbefar-reaching,notonlyequippingstudentswithessential preventiontoolsbutalsofosteringanenvironmentofmutualsupportandawareness.Byeducating studentsonthesevitalissues,UWAaimstocreatearippleeffectofpositivechangewithinthe universityandbeyond.

Looking Ahead

TheUniversityofWestAlabamaiscommittedtotheongoingdevelopmentandsuccessoftheTiger P.A.W.program.WiththesupportoftheMeganMontgomeryFoundationGrant,UWAispoisedto makesignificantstridesinthefightagainstcampussexualviolence.Theuniversitycommunity eagerlyanticipatesthepositiveoutcomesthisprogramwillbring,settingastandardforother institutionstofollow.

FREEAPPLICATIONFORFEDERALSTUDENTAID(FAFSA)

The2024-2025FreeApplicationforFederalStudentAid(FAFSA)isnowavailabletocompleteforthe 2024-2025academicyear!Thisapplicationwillcoverthefollowingterms:Fall2024throughSummer 2025.Theapplicationhasbeenreducedfrom108questionsto36tomaketheapplicationprocess easierforstudentsandparents.

TrellisServicescametocampustopresentaworkshoponhowtohelpstudentswiththeFASFAprocess. ThisworkshopwasopentoallUWAemployees,StudentWorkers,andHighSchoolCounselors.The workshopwasalsolive-streamedandrecordedtoreachalargeraudiencethatwasunabletoattendin person Theworkshopwasverysuccessful

EmilyrepresentedtheAdmissionsOfficeontheBOSSIIcommitteetoreviewandinterviewapplicantsfortheFall 2024class.

TheOn-CampusUndergraduateOfficenowprocessesallon-campusundergraduatetransientapplications. 21StudentAmbassadorsand5AmbassadoralternatesstartedtheirpositionsinJanuary.Theycompleted numeroustrainingsessionsthroughoutthespringsemester.Additionally,theyattendedanAmbassadorretreat withprofessionalstaffmembersMarch14-15inColumbus,GA.Ambassadorsparticipatedinascavengerhunt, wentwhitewaterrafting,andenjoyedlotsofgreatfoodandfellowship.

UWAHousingpartneredwithVividMediatocreatevirtualtoursofGilbert,Hoover,Reed,andPatterson Halls.Whilethetourswereshotandcreatedlastsummer,thesetoursbecameacrucialpieceofRoom SelectionthisSpring,givingstudentstheopportunitytoviewthevariedoptionswehaveavailablefor upperclasshousing.Inthepast,thestaffprovidedopenhouses,whichhadafewresidentsattendto viewhalls,butthesetoursallowedresidentstoviewoptions24hoursaday,7daysaweek,from anywhereintheworld.ThesetourswerealsohighlightedmultipletimesonUWA’ssocialmedia (specificallyUWABoundandUWAConnect),allowingforanevengreataudience.

COMMUNITYHIGHLIGHTS

InJanuary,severalstaffmembershostedprogramsfocusedontheNewYearandnewsemesterand planningforsuccess.SeldenRAsprovidedmocktailsandtreatswhileresidentswrotealetterwith theirintentionsfortheNewYearandthissemester.TheRAscollectedthem,andthenpassedthem outrightbeforefinalexamsattheendofApriltohelpthemseehowfarthey’vecome,whatthey accomplished,andmore.

Februarybroughtabouttrivianights–Valentine’sTrivia,BlackHistoryTrivia,UWATrivia,andmore. Inaddition,GilbertstaffcelebratedMardiGraswithaMasks,Beads,&TipsYouNeedtobring awarenesstobingedrinking.SeldenresidentsenjoyedMardiGrasanddiscussedsafetywitha MaskedPartyMannersprogram,givingresidentsthechancetopainttheirownMardiGrasmasks. Reed,Patterson,andSeldenhostedamulti-hallevent,RPSWars, toencourageupperclassstudent engagementinMarch,whileGilbertRAspairedwithUWACampusPoliceforWatchYourBooze. Campuspoliceofficersdiscussedandprovidedactivitiestohelpstudentsunderstandthedangers ofimpaired,buzzed,anddrunkdriving.

InApril,ourHousingteamhostedaSolarEclipseViewingParty,providingeclipseglassesand eclipsethemedfoodandmusictomorethan100students,faculty,andstaff.RAshostedavarietyof programsgearedtowardsstressrelief,fromBlastFromThePastColoringandPaintYourWorries AwaytoFinalExamSurvivalTips,MotivationOntheGo,andStressedSpelledBackwardsis Desserts!RAsalsotackledSpringCleaningandSummersafetythismonth

Ongoingcommunicationwithnewandreturningstudentsrequestinginformationabouthowtorequest accommodations. Accommodationbreakdowninthechartbelow.

Continuedeffortstoincreasestudentretentionisongoing. Theutilizationofafaculty/staffinitiatedearlyalert formhasbeenestablishedtoidentifystudentsthatmightbeatriskforacademicissueswhilehereatUWA. Studentsidentifiedarecontacted(inmanycasesbyaCARESadvisor)tohopefullydeterminewhatobstacles mightbekeepingthemfromperformingattheirbest. Thestudentisencouragedtomeetwiththeiradvisor(or assignedstaffmember)onceaweekforseveralweeksoruntilthestudentisbackontrack. Thelargestobstacle isgettingthestudenttoengagewiththeresource.

SERVICESTATION

SponsoredtheUWAServiceStationgearedtowardhelping studentsensuretheirvehicleissafefortravelasthey preparetogohomeforthesummer. Volunteerscleaned windshields,addedwasherfluid,checkedoillevels(offered recommendationonhowtocorrectifoilwaslow),and checkedtirepressureandadjustingasneeded. Inaddition, thevolunteerscheckedthetaillights,brakelights, headlights,andturnsignals. Thisserviceisofferednearthe endofeachsemester.
