PROGRAM
The Old Maid and the Thief Gian Carlo Menotti
In a small American town of the 1930s, the lives of two respectable women are turned upside down by the arrival of a handsome vagabond. Miss Todd, a wealthy but lonely spinster, and her young maid Laetitia take in the charming Bob when he comes begging for food. Enchanted by his presence, both women compete for his attention — soon finding themselves lying, stealing, and breaking the law to keep him comfortable. When they discover that Bob may not be who he claims, their morality unravels in a swirl of jealousy and deception. Menotti’s witty and biting satire exposes the hypocrisy of “respectable” society, with humor, charm, and a touch of melancholy.
Intermission (15 minutes)
and the Night Visitors Gian Carlo Menotti
On a starry night long ago, a poor, crippled boy named Amahl lives with his mother in a humble home. When three mysterious kings knock at their door seeking rest on their journey to bring gifts to a newborn child, Amahl’s world fills with wonder. Though they have little to give, Amahl and his mother offer what they can. Tempted by the kings’ treasures, the mother’s desperation leads to a moment of theft — and forgiveness. In the end, Amahl offers his crutch as a gift to the Child and finds himself miraculously healed. Menotti’s beloved Christmas opera celebrates faith, generosity, and the transforming power of love.
