In 2011 student leaders within the community came together to create what we now use as our core values in order to set a standard for the community and ensure that our legacy as one of the oldest fraternal communities set the standard for developing lifelong leaders with the ability to collaborate and advocate for justice; contributing to positive change locally, regionally and nationally.

Through thick and thin your brothers will stand by your side just as you stand by theirs. We are upstanding members of the community, at home and abroad. The friendships you make here will last forever. The change you make here and in your futures will be carried with you. Here is where you learn what and who you stand for. Fraternities are a place in which you can find your brothers for life, and make an impact so much bigger than you ever thought. With that comes commitment.

RECRUITMENT TIPS

THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS WE WANT YOU TO KEEP IN MIND:

1. Get to know each of the chapters. Even though you are only joining one, building relationships is important.

2. Recruitment is about finding out where you belong, which chapter matches your values, which chapter will support you, and which chapter will hold you accountable to being a better you.

3. As you get to know the guys, communicate your interests and things you are (or were) involved in.

4. Go to events with an open mind and have confidence.

5. Talk about finances - what is included in dues and what isn't - if they have a facility are you expected to live-in? Do they offer a payment plan or scholarships?

6. Most importantly, If you have questions, Ask.

DEAR INCOMING FRATERNAL BROTHERS, I AM EXCITED TO WHOLEHEARTEDLY WELCOME YOU TO OUR FRATERNAL COMMUNITY. WHEN I WAS A FIRST- YEAR JUST THREE YEARS AGO I HAD PLANNED TO ONLY PLAY RUGBY AND GO TO THE GYM. OUT OF THE BLUE, I WAS INVITED TO A BASKETBALL RUSH EVENT AND WAS TAKEN ABACK BY HOW FRIENDLY AND OUTSPOKEN THESE INDIVIDUALS WERE ABOUT THEIR CHAPTER. SO I DECIDED TO GIVE IT A TRY. I RUSHED THREE DIFFERENT FRATERNITIES, AND I COULD SEE HOW PROUD EACH MEMBER WAS TO BE APART OF THEIR CHAPTER. AT FIRST, I WAS HESITANT, I WASN’T SURE IF IT WAS ALL FOR A SHOW -- MUCH LIKE WHAT I’VE HEARD FROM OTHER SCHOOLS. THOUGH AFTER BEING ON THE OUTSIDE, AND THEN BEING INCLUDED ON THE INSIDE, I COULD SEE THAT I WAS JOINING A GENUINE GROUP OF LIKEMINDED INDIVIDUALS. WHO NOT ONLY WORKED TO BETTER THEIR COMMUNITY AND UNIVERSITY; BUT ALSO THEMSELVES AS PEOPLE. IT IS FOR THIS REASON THAT I INVITE YOU TO EXPLORE FRATERNITY, BECAUSE GREEK LIFE AT UVM IS MORE THAN JUST INDIVIDUAL CHAPTERS -- WE ARE A FAMILY. TERMINOLOGY Bid: a formal invitation given by a fraternity asking a prospective member to join the chapter Big Brother: an older member assigned to assist a new member in his college transition Brother: a term used within fraternities when referring to other members Hazing: An abusive way of treating new members that can be in the form of physical or mental abuse, humiliation, or harassment.

UVM and the state of Vermont takes a strong stance against hazing as it is illegal and against the core values of the university and Greek Life

Informal Recruitment: the unstructured recruitment process by which chapters bring in new members, sometimes called "rush" Interfraternity Council (IFC): The governing body for all UVM fraternities Legacy: a prospective member whose immediate relative(s) were in a recognized fraternity at UVM New Member: a male-identified individual who has accepted a fraternity bid, but has not been initiated NIC: North-American Interfraternity ConferencePotential Potential New Member: a person participating in recruitment events

FAQs How much of a time commitment is fraternity participation?

Participating in a fraternal organization is like any worthwhile co-curricular activity - it requires a time investment. The benefit of membership in the fraternity community at UVM is the opportunity for a well-rounded college experience that includes learning how to balance academics, work, campus involvement and social commitments.

How much does it cost?

Each fraternities' dues vary depending on the chapter. At any recruitment events you attend you should ask for updated information and consider each chapter's dues while making your decision on which chapter to join.

How do I get in contact with a chapter?

You'll find the instagram account and contact information for every organization's Recruitment Chair.

What about unrecognized fraternities?

We care about the safety and health of our community members - unrecognized groups often do not follow policies which puts everyone involved at risk. For up to date information on which groups are recognized and in good standing with the university please refer to the UVM FSL website.

When are recruitment events?

You'll find a general recruitment schedule with each organization's first event. In order to attend any recruitment event you do need to attend the MANDATORYÂ virtual orientation session on September 18th. Sign up by going to go.uvm.edu/ifc What about academics?

All UVM fraternal organizations have GPA requirements to join as well as to maintain active membership. GPA requirements are set individually by each chapter. We expect all of our members to have a minimum of 2.5 GPA.

ANYONE INTERESTED IN JOINING A FRATERNITY AT UVM MUST HAVE: 1. Attended Fraternity orientation 2. At least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) (Does not apply to first semester first year students)

RECRUITMENT POLICIES THE SAFETY OF POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS AND MEMBERS IS OUR NUMBER ONE RESPONSIBILITY.

RECRUITMENT RULES: 1. Recruitment events will happen virtually to ensure safety during COVID-19.

2. The sale, advertisement and/or use of alcohol at any chapter house, sponsored event, or at any event that an observer would associate with any fraternity recruitment are strictly prohibited.

3. Women shall take no part in chapter’s recruitment activities.

4. All Recruitment events will be over by 11:45 pm

HAZING UVM unequivocally opposes activities that constitute hazing.

You will be held accountable for any hazing behavior you do by yourself and/or with others against a student or prospective student in connection to joining or maintaining membership in any organization affiliated with UVM. Unacceptable behaviors cover a wide range of activities that isolate, humiliate, intimidate or demean an individual, as well as other behaviors that can also cause mental or physical harm.

Hazing occurs regardless of the consent or willingness of a person to participate in the activity.
