Dear Prospective New Member, I am very excited to welcome you all to the University of Vermont’s Primary Recruitment 2021! This year, it feels great to be able to welcome you all back to an in-person recruitment after the past year of uncertainty.

In the recruitment process, you will meet strong and empowered individuals from six amazing organizations. The individuals in these chapters are leaders in their organizations and across campus. They are athletes at a variety of levels. They put their academics first and strive together and individually to learn here at UVM. These members are passionate individuals who focus on their philanthropic efforts that benefit a wide range of philanthropies.

In every round, you will have the opportunity to learn about the chapters’ values, siblinghood, and how they have grown in their membership. It is important in these rounds to be yourself and show these chapters your values and how you can grow through joining their organization and being at UVM. This recruitment process can be overwhelming at times, but other individuals are here to support you through it all! The Recruitment Counselors (Rho Gammas) are here to help you through recruitment with any questions you have or if you just need a friend to talk to. The Rho Gammas gave up their chapter letters almost a month ago to help you through this process so that you can find your own. Don’t worry though, they will be running home to their chapters at the end of Bid Night to join all the excitement!

In joining a sorority, you can find a second family like myself, and many other members have! I encourage you all to begin this process with an open mind and continue to keep your mind open as new possibilities open up to you!

Everyone on the recruitment team and every single member in each chapter are so excited to meet you and join you in your recruitment journey!

Sorority Recruitment Week First and foremost, please be on time!

For the first half of recruitment and Bid Day, all participants will receive the same schedule. On days four and five, you will be provided a personalized schedule for the day, which may not require you to be there for the entirety of that round.

You must make sure to be with your Catamount Groups 10 minutes before each round begins. Try to minimize bathroom breaks and ALWAYS let your Rho Gammas know where you will be going if you need to leave the group.

If you are having any difficulties, reach out to your Rho Gammas as soon as you encounter an issue so they can troubleshoot with you.

Prospective New Members are encouraged to eat before attending Primary Recruitment. During any breaks, you may step away and eat snacks (alone, being COVID-safe), but make sure you are back with your Catamount groups in time for the next event. Make sure you are taking care of your bodies, eating, resting, and getting enough sleep!

What toWear

Each day, we ask that you honor the culture of UVM and dress casually and comfortably. The sorority women and recruitment counselors will also be dressed casually.

Sorority Recruitment Schedule Day One: PNM Orientation,Wednesday, Sept. 22nd, 6:00-8:00 PM

At PNMO, you will get an overview of the sorority community at UVM, what to expect for the recruitment process, and some other helpful information to get any questions you may have answered prior to starting your recruitment experience! At this meeting, you will meet your Catamount Group and Recruitment Counselors (Rho Gammas)! They will get to know you a bit better and help answer any last questions you have. You will also get to know members of your Catamount group, who will be with for the first several rounds of recruitment.

Day Two: "How Will You Grow", Thursday, Sept. 23rd, 5:15-11:40 PM

On night 2, you will visit 3 out of the 6 chapters for 30 minutes each, with a 10 minute break in between. For these rounds, you will be with your Catamount Groups the entire time. In each chapter room, you will learn what makes each chapter unique and what distinguishes each chapter from another.

Day Three: "How Will You Grow", Friday, Sept. 24th, 4:30-11:00 PM On night 3, you will visit the remaining 3 chapters that you have not seen yet, for 30 minutes each, with a 10 minute break in between. For these rounds, you will be with your Catamount Groups the entire time. In each chapter room, you will learn what makes each chapter unique and what distinguishes each chapter from another. After this day, you will preference your chapters on your PNM Companion app.

Sorority Recruitment Schedule Day Four: "Philanthropy and Service", Saturday, Sept. 25th, 11:005:00 PM On Day 4, you will receive an individualized schedule based on your preferences as well as the chapters’. You will visit up to 4 chapters, and each chapter will share with you their philanthropy efforts and what types of events they hold to raise awareness to important issues in our community.

You will also watch a presentation that will educate you on the financial information for each chapter. The rounds on this day are 40 minutes each with 10 minute breaks in between.

Day Five: "Preference", Sunday, Sept. 26th, 8:00 AM-2:00 PM; 6:309:00 PM On day 5, you will receive another individualized schedule, once again based on you and each chapter’s preferences. You will visit up to two chapters, which have each set up rooms in either Votey or Innovation halls on UVM campus. When you meet with the chapter(s), you will learn what it is like to be a part of each specific chapter and understand what makes each chapter unique as well as understand ritual and how it is important to a values-based organization. Each round will be 60 minutes, with 20 minute breaks in between.

On Sunday night, you will meet at the Davis center to receive your Bid from your new Chapter! You will run outside to meet with your new chapter, and there will also be a Rho Gammas reveal where Rho Gammas will also run home to their chapters.

Your Rights in Sorority Recruitment As a prospective new member, you have the right to...

Be treated as an individual Be fully informed about the recruitment process Ask questions and receive truthful and objective answers from recruitment counselors and members.

Be treated with respect.

Be treated as a capable and mature person without being patronized.

Ask how and why receiving straight answers.

Have and express honest opinions to recruitment counselors.

Have inviolable confidentiality when sharing information with recruitment counselors.

Make informed choices without undue pressure form others.

The right to be fully informed about the NPC Unanimous Agreements implicit in the membership recruitment acceptance binding agreement (MRABA) signing process.

Make one's own choices and decisions and accept full responsibility for the results of one's own decisions.

What is the UVM College Panhellenic Association?

The UVM College Panhellenic Association serves as the governing body for the six national sororities represented here at the University of Vermont. The College Panhellenic Association is part of the larger governing body, the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC). The National Panhellenic Conference is an organization formed to promote and support sorority membership.

The UVM College Panhellenic Association is comprised of one elected delegate from each chapter and the nine sorority members who serve as Panhellenic Officers.

The executive board works together to form Fraternity & Sorority Life unity, provide a support system for all chapters, and to plan Fraternity & Sorority Life events. These events range from philanthropy and service opportunities to educational speakers to social activities.

Upon joining their chosen chapter, every student is immediately considered a member of the Panhellenic community which opens the door to endless opportunities for community engagement, educational programs, and fun events designed to help the members of our community meet and get to know their Panhellenic sisters!

What is a Recruitment Counselor?

Recruitment counselors, also known as Rho Gammas, serve one purpose: to ensure that you have a positive, safe, and enriching recruitment experience.

Recruitment can be overwhelming and choosing the right sorority chapter for you can be a tough decision. Rho Gammas are here to talk to you, to help alleviate any stress, and to answer any questions that you might have. If you wish to talk about your decisions, Rho Gammas are here to help.

Your Rho Gammas will leead you to each sorority chapter throughout the rounds of recruitment. Your Rho Gammas will keep you updated and informed of your schedule every day of recruitment.

Throughout the recruitment process, these women remain disaffiliated from their respective chapters. This is done so that Rho Gammas can better guide you and help you find your fit in our sorority community. Rho Gammas are here to provide you with an unbiased opinion and will not influence your preferences based upon their own feelings.

Rho Gammas have been specially selected from out sorority community due to their strong leadership, objectivity, compassion, and enthusiasm for sorority life. Please use your Rho Gammas to the best of your advantage- they're here for you! These people will be able to offer you advice and other valuable information about what awaits you when joining UVM's Fraternity and Sorority Life community.

Glossary

Here are a few words and phrases that you might hear throughout the recruitment experience...

Active Member: An initiated person who is a college student.

Alumna: A sorority member who has graduated or left college (plural: alumnae).

Badge: The pin of an initiated member.

Bid: A formal invitation to join a chapter.

Chapter: The local collegiate group of a larger inter/national sorority or fraternity designated by a specific Greek name.

Catamount group: The group you will visit each of the chapters with and check in with each day before the recruitment rounds begin.

Informal recruitment/COB: The unstructured recruitment process by which chapters bring in new members- usually happening mid-Fall or early Spring.

Initiation: A formal ceremony during which a man or woman begins full membership in an organization.

National Panhellenic Conference: An umbrella organization for the members of 26 people's inter/national fraternities, specifically charged with advancing the sorority experience.

New member: A person who has accepted a fraternity or sorority bid, but has not been initiated.

New Member Period: The time during which new members learn about their organization, its members, and their activities.

Ritual: A value-based esoteric ceremony that is traditional of a chapter. Rituals are kept a secret.

Sister/sibling: A term used by sorority members in reference to one another Sisterhood/siblinghood: The name that applies to sorority chapters and is characterized by a ritual, a pin, and a strong bond of friendship.
