Presented by Mieko Ozeki, Sustainability Projects Coordinator, and STAR Communities intern Daniel Baker '15 at the 2015 Smart & Sustainable Campus Communities in Baltimore, MD on March 31, 2015.
Session Description
Similar to AASHE’s STARS, the STAR Community Rating System is a comprehensive sustainability certification program specifically designed for local governments. Both rating systems utilize selfreporting, multi-tiered systems, and have unique obstacles to overcome for participating institutions and communities. This panel presentation will illustrate lessons learned through a collaboration between the University of Vermont and City of Burlington, Vermont to become a STAR Member Community. Presenters will discuss how this kind of mutually beneficial relationship with local community can improve process efficiency, reduce costs, enhance the university’s educational reach and curriculum, and improve “town-gown” relationships.
