Our goal is to have the best possible medicine – next-generation medicine – for the residents of Virginia and people around the globe. We’re building a world-class facility that will compete with anybody…in terms of research, manufacturing, and treatment. PAUL MANNING, CHAIR AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF PBM CAPITOL, UVA PHILANTHROPIST
The Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology positions UVA at the very forefront of cutting-edge medicine such as cellular and gene therapies that revolutionize how diseases are treated and cured, and will foster an environment that inspires, supports excellence, and promotes discoveries and innovative healthcare solutions that move from the bench to the bedside prolonging and saving lives. The new Manning Institute will advance research in these areas for the benefit of patients everywhere and, closer to home, ensure that no Virginian needs to leave the state for even the most complex care.
“
This is the type of facility most universities can only dream of, and it will help us attract top talent and train the great biomedical innovators of the future. IAN BAUCOM, UVA EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & PROVOST
The Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology will bring together under one roof the high-tech research facilities and state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities needed to accelerate the development and testing of new treatments and cures. It will be home to researchers exploring new treatments to improve health on the cellular and genetic levels and provide a confluence of researchers and scientific leaders from all biomedical, engineering, and chemical sciences at the University of Virginia. The Manning Institute will advance research in these areas for the benefit of patients everywhere and ensure that no Virginian needs to leave the state for even the most complex care. It will facilitate collaboration among the bioscience ecosystem, including higher education, policymakers and government leaders, entrepreneurial enterprises, and other organizations committed to the pursuit of revolutionary medical breakthroughs. These partnerships will usher in new possibilities for the medical community and improve the well-being of individuals and populations.
At a Glance: •A $100 million gift from Paul and Diane Manning has propelled the University of Virginia to pursue funding to build a state-of-the-art biotechnology institute. • Additional funding for the facility comes from the Commonwealth, the University of Virginia, and other generous private donors. • T he Institute’s launch will fast track the development of new treatments and cures and transform how health care is delivered across the Commonwealth and beyond. •O nce fully operational, the Institute will generate hundreds of jobs directly, and potentially thousands indirectly, by drawing in biotech and pharmaceutical companies. • At 350,000 square feet, the building will be located in the Fontaine Research Park in Charlottesville, in close proximity to other medical research facilities, and with easy access from Route 64 and the Route 29 Bypass. • T he creation of a clinical trials network that leverages UVA’s existing statewide clinical network will provide Virginians with access to emerging therapies. •P artnerships with other research institutions in the Commonwealth will bolster the Institute’s research networks. •B uilding completion and occupation is anticipated in late 2026 and early 2027.

We are at an extraordinary moment in history, an era where treatment or eradication of so many human diseases is within our grasp. Here at UVA, we will be a driving force of a larger global effort that will accelerate the development of revolutionary new clinical therapies. DR. CRAIG KENT, CEO, UVA HEALTH
Research with Translational Impact
UVA will be a driving force of a larger global effort that will accelerate the development of revolutionary new clinical therapies.
In addition to accelerating new research, the Institute will allow UVA to expand its clinical trial offerings, making it possible for more people to access potential treatments as they are being developed – sometimes years before they become widely available. The Institute will allow UVA to capitalize on its existing strengths, such as immunotherapy, where the immune system is supercharged to defeat diseases such as cancer and neurological disease, and nanotechnology, which aims to improve human health using tools far tinier than the width of a single human hair. Nanotechnology, for example, can be used to enhance drug delivery, so that a drug is delivered exactly where it is needed and not to cells where it might be harmful – true precision medicine. Translational research performed at the Institute will aid in the development of new disease treatments through: • Gene therapy
• Cellular therapy
• Viral therapies
• Nanotherapeutics
• Immunotherapies
• Vaccine development
• Small molecule therapeutics
An Ecosystem of Innovation The launch of the Institute will also help UVA attract top talent and bolster funding for its research efforts. Ultimately, the Institute is expected to generate an “ecosystem” of innovation, discovery, manufacturing, and industry with benefits extending throughout Virginia and beyond, resulting in an economic impact that is anticipated to be substantial over the coming years. Attracting pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to the state, this facility will be a major hub for research, development, and manufacturing. This vibrant ecosystem of healthcare innovation could generate hundreds of jobs directly and potentially thousands indirectly, supercharging the Commonwealth’s economy.
