The case asks participants to imagine that they work for the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). The agencies are seeking perspectives on ways to improve migrants’ lifestyles in South Africa, in the realms of access to healthcare, protection from discrimination, and migrant housing.

Migrants in South Africa face racial and economic tensions, a lack of access to quality housing and formal employment, a weak public health sector, and a healthcare system that struggles with high rates of communicable diseases. Meanwhile, migration policies remain cumbersome and bureaucratic, leading to less formal migration and more illegal migration. Participants can focus on one or several of these areas in their approaches.

The HSRC and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ long-term goal is to develop a

model design for the mid-sized South African urban center – a city that will relieve the burden on South Africa’s large urban centers and serve all citizens, migrants, and

refugees. GHCC participants will propose how they would use a $100,000 planning grant to achieve these aims within five-year timeframe.

Participating teams in the 2017 UVA GHCC are asked to create a proposal in response to the HSRC and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ call that is true to their internal strategic objectives and that builds towards an innovative, effective, implementable, and financially sound proposal to enhance migrants’ lifestyles that will be presented to a panel of judges representing the two agencies.

Welcome Address The UVA Center for Global Health (CGH) engages multiple disciplines across the University of Virginia as well as across cultural, economic, and geographic divides to focus on improving health and well-being. It is our honor to support the 2017 Global Health Case Competition which includes over 100 student participants, 12 outstanding faculty and guest judges representing multiple critical disciplines, and a diverse and dynamic group of mentors whose experience and guidance is essential. Â Â We are delighted and proud to welcome our research collaborator and friend, Professor Vhonani Netshandama whose collegiality, expertise and deep connections in her community make her an invaluable asset to this endeavor. In the spirit of collaboration, we welcome Professor Netshandama and each of you.
