LOYAL TRUE ALWAYS
Welcome to the 151st commencement ceremony at The University of Tulsa.
Today marks a significant milestone in our graduates' lives as we celebrate their academic achievements and their journey into the future. The University of Tulsa is proud to honor our students' hard work, perseverance and dedication.
As they step forward to receive their degrees, we also recognize the invaluable support of family, friends and faculty who have contributed to their success. This ceremony not only symbolizes the culmination of years of study but also the beginning of new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. We are excited to see the paths our graduates will take and their impact on their communities and beyond.
Congratulations to the Class of 2026! Let us commence the celebration of your remarkable accomplishments.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT
Doctor of Philosophy, Honoris Causa
Ellen Adelson has been a longtime supporter and advocate of The University of Tulsa, reflecting a lifelong commitment to education and service. A clinical social worker, she has said her greatest reward is helping others reach their potential. That belief is reflected in her professional career, her four sons, and the many UTulsa students supported through her family’s endowed scholarships.
Adelson’s commitment to giving back was instilled by her parents and grandparents. She and her late husband, Dr. Stephen Adelson, funded or helped fund eight university endowments and played a key role in the creation of the Herbert and Roseline Gussman Concert Hall at the Lorton Performance Center. She has also demonstrated decades of strong support for McFarlin Library, helping ensure it remains a vital academic resource for UTulsa students and faculty.
She served on the UTulsa Board of Trustees from 1994 to 2020 and holds the title of trustee emerita. Adelson earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Oklahoma.
2026 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER & HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Doctor of Philosophy, Honoris Causa
Julius Tennon is an accomplished actor, producer and University of Tulsa alumnus whose career spans film, television and theater. He attended UTulsa as a student-athlete before receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1978. Tennon honed his craft in the Kendall College of Arts & Sciences, performing in productions such as “Othello” and “The Emperor Jones.” He has since built an expansive body of work with screen credits including “Friday Night Lights,” “Fame,” “Criminal Minds,” “How to Get Away with Murder,” “Air,” “G20,” and “The Woman King.”
Alongside his wife, Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis, Tennon co-founded JuVee Productions, a company dedicated to developing and producing stories from historically underrepresented voices. Deeply committed to mentorship and experiential learning, Tennon remains actively engaged with his alma mater, creating opportunities for UTulsa students to gain real-world experience in the entertainment and media industries.
The Outstanding Teacher Award is among the highest honors The University of Tulsa bestows. It can be won only once. Past winners have set a high standard that has made this honor coveted and respected, in large part because nominations must come from students.
Charles Brown Professor of Biological Science
Denise Dutton Applied Associate Professor of Philosophy
Matt Hindman Associate Professor of Political Science
The Outstanding Researcher Award is a lifetime honor. It may be received only once by an individual. The award is intended to honor career-spanning achievements, validated by recognition from the scholar’s professional field.
Stephen Galoob Professor of Law
Evren Ozbayoglu Professor of Petroleum Engineering
Eduardo
Faingold Professor of Spanish

ACADEMIC HOODS
Only those receiving master’s and doctoral degrees wear academic hoods. The red, blue and gold on each hood represent the school colors of The University of Tulsa. The trim of the hood is according to discipline and matches the tassel color, with the exception of the doctor of philosophy hoods, which are trimmed in royal blue. Among the faculty will be academic regalia in designs and colors representing a variety of degrees from other institutions of higher learning.
ACADEMIC
SASHES
Global Education Veterans
UTulsa acknowledges the invaluable global engagement experience of students who have either participated in a study abroad program during their time at the university or have traveled to the U.S. to study as international students. These students are distinguished by a red sash adorned with a globe.
Students who have served in the United States armed services wear sashes with stars and stripes indicating their status as U.S. veterans.
THE MACE
The grand marshal of ceremonies carries the mace, symbolizing authority. It features a pewter upper portion with die-formed shapes, hand-engraved surfaces, black onyx stones and The University of Tulsa seal. Its cocobolo wood shaft provides striking contrast. Designed by William R. Derrevere, it spans approximately 4 feet.

ALMA MATER
Hail to thee Alma Mater, gold and blue, Praise from thy sons and daughters, old and new. Pride in our hearts, our voices let us raise, Filled with devotion we will sing thy praise. Alma Mater, now we honor, loyal, always true, We will lift our voice in chorus. Hail to Tulsa U!
