NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

The “shock of recognition” — coined by writer and critic Edmund Wilson — is the best part of consuming art. It’s that moment of surprise, when someone else’s deeply personal experience stirs an inexplicable feeling in your own stomach; when empathy is achieved not just by seeing someone else in a new light, but recognizing that maybe, just maybe, they see you. At the start of his journey, Edward is fighting to be seen. He wants others to bear witness to his needs, to be nurtured and adored, to feel that his desires and passions are important and for others to hear his pain. What he learns, though, is that these “shocks of recognition” come only to those who are willing to connect to the world around them to bear witness to the experiences of others, to open their own eyes, first. It’s a story about perspective; it tells us that by opening our hearts to the pains and triumphs of those around us, our journeys become all the more vibrant and meaningful. What DiCamillo’s story does perhaps most powerfully, is make magic real. These characters make Edward’s life miraculous, and they do it in ways we can mirror. They give generously. They share vulnerably, even when the truth is terribly hard to name. They take in the stranger. They clothe the needy. They love deeply. I can’t think of a more poignant message for this moment. This production is brought to life by a team of artists who have imbued the fabric of this story with all the things they love. They’ve given it new life, so to speak, by leaning on the practices that give them that spark — that shock of recognition — in hopes it will help us see things in a new way, and thus, see ourselves. - Julia Kreutzer, Director

NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURG

You are about to enter a world shaped through the eyes, hear, and mind of a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. Every piece of this play is driven by the doll’s perspective, from his emotional state during his repeated discovery of new homes, to his exaggerated views of the clothing and accessories of his owners, to his literal visual perception, which is captured by an embedded live-feed camera. In approaching this play, the directing and dramaturgy team has trusted audiences, both young and adult, to play along with us. To fill in the in-between spaces of our stage and story as actors put on various characters, time flows quickly and the thoughts of a rabbit doll are voiced by a musician. I have found that often, as we age, humans can lose that fierce sense of imagination. Like some of the characters in the play you are about to watch, we lose our curiosity about one another and about the world, sequestering ourselves within our familiar orbits. We only see what is laid out explicitly, realistically, in front of us. Like Edward, we resist connecting the dots between us and the unfamiliar. I hope that the performance you are about to watch can be an opportunity for us to collectively embrace curiosity, deep feeling, abstract representation and imagination. I hope we can lean into the deconstruction and reconstruction of this story to attune to the beauty honed in the negative spaces. Despite its inanimate protagonist, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is a profoundly human story. It is about learning how to care for others and allowing yourself to be cared for. It is about perseverance and the labor of optimism. It is about the constellations of people, memories and places that we gather over our lives. - Georgia Beckmann, Dramaturg
