NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR The word “cyborg” might seem a perfect way to describe this moment of global isolation and daily life being carried out over Zoom. And you’d be right to say that you are already a cyborg. A hybrid creature with fluid boundaries, existing in a world where reality and virtuality are no longer distinct. But this would only be a beginning…

In the Ether (ongoing from 2016) explores cyborg and queer theory to imagine strategies for embodiment with and through technology, using dance as a mechanism to practice agency in our humantechno entanglement. We do this primarily by “hacking” or repurposing everyday technologies. Nothing here is unfamiliar; it’s how we use what’s available that queers reality.

The work of deconstructing a boundary begins with examining how it was constructed. The borders that keep us distinct from each other and parts of ourselves separate are too often built by systems tied to oppression. Boundaries constructed in this way tell us anything “Other” is bad-wrong-dangerous.

And so, we conform to those externally placed borders, expending energy maintaining them until we can’t imagine existing without them. The cyborg rejects this kind of dualism and takes pleasure in confusing those distinctions.

We use queering as a verb; an active state of imagining beyond this dominant reality. This is the real work of the cyborg: continually questioning, discovering, uncovering, reassembling and reimagining.

We do this with our bodies in multiple spaces, with and through our technologies, to understand ourselves as fluid creatures capable of holding great complexity and making great change.

Our work with In the Ether has been to willingly remain in the not-knowing of these proposals. To become comfortable in the unknowing of systems as they exist, building stamina to imagine beyond this current moment and co-creating new futures.

This iteration of In the Ether was realized through the collaborative efforts of our incredible design team, adventurous dance artists and my assistant directors Ginnifer Joe, Taryn Lavery, Mack Lawrence, Rachel Nayer and Erica Patricia Saucedo. Thank you for practicing fluidity.

CREATIVE Leah Benaim (Stage Manager) is a B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with honors and an emphasis in design and technology at The University of Texas at Austin. Recent credits with Texas Theatre and Dance include serving as stage manager for (Re)current Unrest (2020) and assistant stage manager for Not Omaha (UTNT (UT New Theatre), 2020). She also served as the lighting designer for Tales from the Globe (UT Shakespeare Company, 2019). Outside of The University of Texas at Austin, she has worked with Iconotheatrix as the stage manager for Chicago (2019).

Leon Cai (Web Developer) is a fourth-year B.S. in Computer Science major at The University of Texas at Austin. He has experience developing mobile and web applications.

Sara Chaney (Lighting Designer) is a fourth-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in design and technology at The University of Texas at Austin. Recent credits with Texas Theatre and Dance include the UTNT (UT New Theatre) productions of Not Omaha and Sow and Suckling (2020) and multiple projects as a part of The Cohen New Works Festival (2019), along with Evolution (2020) and Collective Repression (2019).

Jackson Cobb (Media and Website Designer) is a M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in integrated media for live performance.

He earned his B.A. in Digital Media Arts at Hamline University, where he designed integrated media for eight mainstage theatre and dance productions. He has designed media for the Minnesota State Fair, Cities 97.1 Basilica Block Party, local theatre productions, live corporate events and, more recently, virtual theatre events.

He’s also programmed theatrical projections for the Guthrie Theater, Theater Mu, Mixed Blood Theatre, History Theatre, New Dawn Theatre Company and Minnesota Public Radio.

Eliot Gray Fisher (Sound Designer) is an interdisciplinary artist pursuing a doctoral degree in Performance as Public Practice. His creative research focuses on performance, integrating emergent consumer technologies to explore their

influence on individual and social realities. He has composed music and designed sound for short and feature film, theatre and dance (described as “virtuosic” by the Los Angeles Times), created documentary and animated shorts, built interactive installations and written and directed several theatrical productions.

Georgina Garza (Web Developer) is a recent graduate from The University of Texas at Austin, where she pursued a B.A. in Dance as well as a B.S.A. in Computer Science. While at the university, she performed in multiple productions with Texas Theatre and Dance as a part of Dance Repertory Theatre, including Fall For Dance (2018, 2019) and Fortitude (2019). She has been seen in works by Rena Butler, Erica Gionfriddo and Charles O. Anderson, among others. She currently works as a software engineer for Stripe.

Erica Gionfriddo (Artistic Director) is a dance artist, educator and somatic researcher who believes in the intelligent body each of us occupies.

They are co-founder of ARCOS (arcosdance.com), whose ongoing inquiry probes the intersection of technology and humanity through rigorous interdisciplinary experimentation. Gionfriddo’s extensive experience with the GYROTONIC® method guides their pedagogy, which they bring in their capacity as assistant professor of practice in the dance area at The University of Texas at Austin and as a national teaching artist. Gionfriddo holds a B.F.A. in Dance Performance and Choreography from Shenandoah Conservatory and an M.F.A. in Dance from Hollins University.

Inji Ha (Scenic Designer) is a first-year M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in scenic design at The University of Texas at Austin.

She recently received her B.F.A. in Theatre Design and Technology with a focus in scenic design and scenic work at Auburn University, where she designed sets for their 2019-2020 production season. Her work has previously been selected for several exhibitions in both Beijing and the United States.

CREATIVE Harrison Hayes (Scenic Designer) is a M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in scenic design at The University of Texas at Austin.

His recent scenic design credits include CREAM! and Ajax at Arizona State University and Series of Reflections at Binary Theatre Company.

Libby Jantz (Lighting Designer) is a third-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in design and technology at The University of Texas at Austin. Recent design credits with Texas Theatre and Dance include multiple works as a part of UTNT (UT New Theatre) 2020 and The Cohen New Works Festival (2019), along with Evolution (2020). She also currently works on the student lighting crew for Texas Performing Arts and is a lighting staff member at the Hogg Memorial Auditorium.

Ashton Bennett Murphy (Technical Director) graduated from The University of Texas at Austin Department of Theatre and Dance in 2018. Since graduating, she has been working full-time as assistant charge scenic artist and technical director at Texas Performing Arts. Murphy also freelances in and around Austin as a designer, content creator and scenic painter.

Benjamin Randall (Media and Website Designer) is a first-year M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in integrated media for live performance at The University of Texas at Austin. After time spent in software development, he now puts his creative efforts into realizing artistic visions through the newest technologies.

Randall is particularly interested in real-time generative media and interactive experiences.

Bill Rios (Lighting Designer) is a M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate at The University of Texas at Austin. He has been lighting productions for a number of years. He is currently a student in the 2020 Electronic Theatre Controls Fred Foster Mentorship program as well as the 2020 Don and Elizabeth Doyle Fellowship, recognizing demonstrated artistic ability in Theatre for Youth. Recent credits with Texas Theatre and Dance include: Spring Awakening (2019); Lloronx and Spillage (The Cohen New Works Festival, 2019).

Lindsey Thurston (Costume Designer) is a M.F.A. in Design and Technology candidate with a focus in costume design at The University of Texas at Austin. She has a varied background in costume design and costume technology and has worked as a costume crafts technician at the Utah Shakespeare Festival and the Utah Festival of Opera and Musical Theatre. Thurston has also participated in the apprenticeship program at the Phoenix Theatre (Phoenix, Arizona).

CAST Diana Acosta (Live Performer) is a secondyear UTeach Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She recently worked with The DASH Ensemble founder Gregory Dolbashian and Bombshell Dance Project creators Emily Bernet and Taylor Kinsey. This will be her first performance with Texas Theatre and Dance.

Lauren Akard (Social Media Force, Under the Hood Consultant) is a UTeach Dance major also pursuing a minor in kinesiology at The University of Texas at Austin.

Lizzy Blade (Live Performer) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, she started training in dance at age 14 at The Dancer’s EDGE. She has trained in various genres and has performed in multiple Texas Theatre and Dance productions, including Fortitude (2019), Evolution (2020) and Fall For Dance (2019), as well as Dance Action’s S.E.E.D. Additionally, she has performed in World of Dance Dallas with Redefined Dance Company. This is her fourth semester in Dance Repertory Theatre.

Venese Alcantar Medovich (Pre-Live Performer) began her institutionalized training at Colorado College. In 2012, she joined Ormao Dance Company. Alcantar Medovich was an artist in residence with Pantera Dance in Kazan, Russia and taught at the Kazan State University of Culture and Art. In 2015, she led Ormao’s educational residency in Beulah, Colorado.

Alcantar Medovich has exhibited work at the UCCS Galleries of Contemporary Art, OhrO’Keefe Museum of Art, Millibo Art Theatre and Colorado College’s Cossitt Hall. She recently returned to school at The University of Texas at Austin to revisit her study of the moving body.

Hanna Bailey (Live Performer) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major also pursuing a minor in business. She started dancing at age four and has studied a variety of dance styles. Throughout her training, she has worked with choreographers Kelli Barclay, Rena Butler and Marcus Jarrell Willis. She recently choreographed when we collide for Dance Action’s S.E.E.D. Bailey has performed in multiple productions with Texas Theatre and Dance, including Fortitude (2019), Spillage (The Cohen New Works Festival, 2019), Fall For Dance (2019) and (Re)current Unrest (2020), as well as Evolution (2019).

Lindsay Ball (Cyborg Library, Live Performer) is currently a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She grew up in Sacramento, California and spent her summer and winter breaks training at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance. She graduated high

Brooke Bower (Social Media Force, Pre-Live Performer) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major.

This will be her fourth semester performing with Dance Repertory Theatre. Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, she has had extensive training in jazz, contemporary and ballet. She has danced in a multitude of performances with Texas Theatre and Dance including Fortitude (2019) and Fall For Dance (2019), as well as Evolution. Recent projects include performing in (Re)current Unrest (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2020), directed by Charles O. Anderson.

Cellise Brown (Pre-Live Performer) is a thirdyear UTeach Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has grown up dancing in studios and throughout public school. Brown has performed as a part of Fall For Dance (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2019) and Evolution (2020), as well as multiple performances as a part of The Cohen New Works Festival (2019).

Kennedy Cannon (Pre-Live Performer) is a third-year B.F.A in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has an extensive background in multiple styles of dance including ballet, modern, contemporary,

Bridget Caston (Under the Hood Consultant, Cyborg Library, Pre-Live Performer) is a fourth-year B.F.A. in Dance and B.B.A. in Management double major at The University of Texas at Austin. Caston began training at local studios in her hometown of Fort Worth. At 10 years of age, she planted her roots at Dian Clough West Dance Studio, studying under Dian West, Julie Ballew and Joy Atkins-Bollinger. Caston also spent summers training with American Ballet Theatre and under former New York City Ballet principal dancer, Jillana, in Taos, New Mexico. Recent performance credits with Texas Theatre and Dance include Fall For Dance (2019) and Fortitude (2019).

Jodi DeAngelis (Pre-Live Performer) is currently a fourth-year B.F.A. in Dance major with honors also pursuing a minor in health and kinesiology. After graduating, DeAngelis plans to continue creating art through movement and choreography that explores personal connections and social impacts.

Chloe Dupuy (Pre-Live Performer) is a second-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has trained in a multitude of styles and has been involved in performance ensembles prior to graduating from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

Makiah Galan (Social Media Force) is a thirdyear B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. He graduated from The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts. Galan has previously attended a community dance program called Xcape where he performed in Take the Stage with the Emmaus High School dance team, Musikfest, Sportsfest, Scottish Rite and Sands Casino. He was recently seen in Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2020).

Jordan Gilbertson (Social Media Force, Live Performer) is a B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has had an extensive career in dance performance and was recently seen in (Re)current Unrest (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2020).

Kalee Sue Gore (Production Coordinator, Social Media Force) is a fourth-year B.A. in Theatre and Dance major with an emphasis in dance performance and choreography at The University of Texas at Austin.

Allison Hamauei (Webinar Performer) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has an extensive background in dance, with training in a range of styles including ballet, contemporary, hip-hop and jazz, among others. Lisette Hotz (Social Media Force, Live Performer) is a B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She was recently seen in Charles O. Anderson’s (Re)current Unrest (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2020).

Sheila Jackson (Social Media Force) is a B.F.A in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has previous training in ballet and modern with Ballet Austin and Oregon Ballet Theatre. This is her second performance with Texas Theatre and Dance, following Charles O. Anderson's (Re)current Unrest (2020).

Matthew D. James (Pre-Live Performer) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. Originally from Fort

Mykaela Johnson (Pre-Live Performer, Docent) is a fourth-year B.F.A. in Dance major also pursuing a minor in educational psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. Recent credits with Texas Theatre and Dance include Transcendence (2018), Fall For Dance (2018, 2019), Fortitude (2019) and The Cohen New Works Festival (2019).

Madelyn Manlove (Cyborg Library, Webinar Performer) is a fourth-year B.F.A. in Dance major also pursuing a minor in kinesiology at The University of Texas at Austin. Josh Martinez (Social Media Force, Live Performer) is a B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. He has studied dance at Quenedit Ballet School and Ballet Austin with teachers Alexa Capareda, Lucy Record and Misha Tchoupakov. Recent credits include (Re)current Unrest (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2020) as well as projects with Quenedit Dance Theatre and Metamorphosis Dance.

Sarah Matney (Social Media Force, Live Performer) is a second-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has

an extensive background in dance training and performance. Her recent credits include dancing in Dance Action’s S.E.E.D. (2019) and working spotlight for Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2020).

Amanda Moogerfeld (Social Media Force) is a fourth-year B.F.A. in Dance major on the pre-medical track at The University of Texas at Austin. She went to a performing arts high school in Savannah, Georgia and trained predominately in ballet with the North Atlanta Dance Academy in Atlanta, Georgia. She has attended many ballet summer intensives, including the Kirov Academy of Ballet and the Boston Ballet School. Moogerfeld was recently seen in Fortitude (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2019) and choreographed for Evolution (2020).

Avery Moore (Cyborg Library, Webinar Performer) is a fourth-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin also pursuing a minor in business. She received vigorous training in dance while attending the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. Most recently, Moore was seen in (Re)current Unrest (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2020), conceived and directed by Charles O. Anderson.

Briah Napier (Pre-Live Performer) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. Napier is from Houston, Texas and graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where she trained with numerous choreographers and dance faculty members.

She has been seen in Texas Theatre and Dance’s Fortitude (2019) and Fall For Dance (2019) and was involved in works by Charles O. Anderson, Erica Gionfriddo and Rena Butler, among others.

Ellie Newton (Social Media Force, Under the Hood Consultant, Cyborg Library) is a B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin with an extensive background in dance. She was recently seen in Charles O. Anderson's (Re)current Unrest (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2020).

CAST Maya Parker (Pre-Live Performer) is a B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. This will be her first performance with Texas Theatre and Dance.

Claire Pencsak (Social Media Force) is a B.F.A in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has an extensive background in dancing and costuming. This is her first performance with Texas Theatre and Dance.

Ciera Ray (Pre-Live Performer) is a B.F.A in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, Texas. She has worked with artists including Gregory Dolbashian, Peter Chu and Manuel Vignoulle.

Denise Rodriguez (Under the Hood Consultant, Cyborg Library, Live Performer) is a B.F.A in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin.

She has an extensive background in dance.

Ashley Stone (Live Performer) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major also pursuing a minor in social work at The University of Texas at Austin.

A Houston native, Stone has studied ballet from the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus. She has had the opportunity to work with choreographers Erica Gionfriddo, Kriven Douthit-Boyd and Mackenzie Lawrence. She has previously been seen in Texas Theatre and Dance’s productions of Fortitude (2019) and Fall For Dance (2019).

Skyler Tepedino (Social Media Force) is a B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin.

She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in 2019.

There, she performed with choreographers Ida Saki, Jennifer Archibald and Peter Chu, among others. Tepedino has studied ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, lyrical and Latin ballroom.

Emma Valdez (Webinar Performer) is a B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She has been dancing since the age of six and has received training in various dance styles including ballet, tap, hip-hop, modern and contemporary.

Anna Valdman (Docent, Pre-Live Performer) is a B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She trained at KJ Dance in Plano, Texas throughout high school and travelled during summers to attend intensives, including Batsheva Dance Company Summer Course in Israel and The Protégé Movement in Canada. She has also performed with Bombshell Dance Project.

Sarah Wales (Pre-Live Performer) is a thirdyear B.F.A. in Dance major also pursuing a B.S. in Exercise Science at The University of Texas at Austin. Originally from Dallas, she has performed with dance companies Bombshell Dance Project and SoulEscape. In addition, she has performed in several shows with Dance Repertory Theatre and has danced and choreographed for Dance Action’s S.E.E.D. She has worked with choreographers Raphael Xavier, Manuel Vignoulle, Maleek Washington, Charles O. Anderson and Stephanie Martinez.

Jenna Weatherbie (Social Media Force, Live Performer) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major also pursuing a pre-physician assistant certification. Since the age of 12, she has received training in multiple styles of dance from professionals Jonathan Guise, Patrick MacDonald, Christa Oliver and Nicole Wesley.

She has performed in the 2019 American College Dance Association Conference, Dance Action’s S.E.E.D. and Charles O. Anderson’s (Re)current Unrest (Texas Theatre and Dance, 2020).

Camille Wiltz (Social Media Force, Cyborg Library, Live Performer) is a second-year B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin. She grew up in Plano, Texas where she trained at Dance Industry Performing Arts Center and graduated from Plano Senior High School. Wiltz has worked with choreographers

CAST Micaela Taylor, Mark Caserta, Mikey Morado, Jess Hendricks, Loni Landon and Sidra Bell, among others. This will be Wiltz’s first performance with Dance Repertory Theatre.

Gracyn Womeldorph (Social Media Force) is a third-year B.F.A. in Dance major. Before coming to Austin, Womeldorph trained for many years in Dallas where she was a member of the Dallas Repertoire Ballet. Womeldorph has worked with choreographers including Charles O. Anderson, Dorothy O’Shea Overbey, Erica Gionfriddo, Chaz Buzan and Scott Jovovich, among others. Womeldorph has recently been seen in Texas Theatre and Dance’s productions of (Re)current Unrest (2020) and Fall For Dance (Dance Repertory Theatre, 2019), as well as Dance Action’s S.E.E.D.
