Dear Friends,

Welcome to Dance Repertory Theatre’s Equinox.

An equinox marks the moment when the sun crosses the celestial equator and day and night stand in near perfect balance. Light and dark meet as equals, reminding us that life moves in cycles of expansion and contraction, action and rest, shadow and illumination.

This moment invites reflection and renewal. It asks us to consider what we are ready to release and what we are prepared to begin. It is a threshold between ways of being where introspection meets expression.

The choreography in this concert reflects a process of becoming. The works move through tension and release, through challenge and recovery, drawing on the power of community and the strength of the individual. They speak to standing together through challenge, finding connection through shared experience and making it work no matter what, often arriving in playfulness and joy.

This production brings together faculty choreography, student works, live music and original compositions in a shared offering of creativity and care. It is both a showcase and a conversation, an opportunity for emerging artists to step into the light and for all of us to gather in the presence of embodied storytelling.

We invite you to enjoy this moment of respite. To breathe. To recognize something of yourself on stage. To remember a time in your own life when balance felt fragile or triumphant. To laugh. To reflect. To celebrate.

Thank you for being here with us,

5, 6, 7, 8—

FROM THE CHOREOGRAPHER

Loosely inspired by Carl Jung’s theory of the collective unconscious, Shadow Puppets is a work that attempts to uncover and make sense of the various “selves” that culminate in the outward facing individual. This inner exploration is visualized through the mechanics of shadow puppetry, a choice that further mixes a child-like sense of curiosity with a state of deep self reflection. The work recognizes the fear of obscurity, asking whether we control our psychological shadows or if they control us.

FROM THE CHOREOGRAPHER

In our digital age, plagued by unprecedented levels of academic, financial and sociopolitical stress, we drift away from true connections to our bodies and experiences of living. Screens, addictions and obsessions numb the pain we choose not to feel. Is it possible to reach a state where our minds occupy the same time and space as our physical forms? I am here explores how fostering connections to our physical bodies and communities can remedy this rapid descent into dissociation.
