NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS Under the artistic direction of Andrea Beckham and Erica Gionfriddo, Dance Repertory Theatre returns to the stage in Fortitude, a concert celebrating the enduring spirit of dance and the strength of those called to claim it. One way to define the word “fortitude” is “courage in the face of adversity.” Our program strives to empower young artists with tools by which they can fortify their personal coherence in relationship to a complex existence so that they might function meaningfully within our ever-more intricate society. Dance as a practice is uniquely situated toward problem-solving, addressing the uncomfortable and maintaining courage in the liminal spaces between absolutes. The choreographers on this program have challenged the performers to move with courage before the outcome is clear, to honor individuality alongside community and to honor both history and future as means to understand this present moment. Through our outstanding faculty choreographers and renowned guest artists, Fortitude offers communities and histories of dance that have not always been in conversation on the concert stage, championing the enduring power of bodies in motion to spark across perceived divides. Institutional memory runs short in the university setting because of the continual entering and exiting of student bodies. Traditions help fortify us across these short generations. Haruka Weiser’s legacy in our community continues to be one rooted in celebration of our shared enduring spirit as dancers, artists, and humans. This year, head of dance Charles O. Anderson ignites her memory as the Haruka Weiser Endowed Excellence Fund in Choreography fellow, in a work that brings the entire Dance Repertory Theatre ensemble together in a tradition of communion.

Fortitude marks the second year of an ongoing celebration of the life and art of Haruka Weiser through a new work created in her name. This annual commission brings an important dance artist to campus to create a new work of dance art in honor of Haruka. This is made possible through the Haruka Weiser Endowed Excellence Fund in Choreography, an endowment created by students, alumni and friends to honor Ms. Weiser in perpetuity. Haruka was a B.F.A. in Dance major at The University of Texas at Austin at the time of her death in 2016. Her lasting gift to us is the world premiere you are about to see.

CASCADE: URGENCY IN THE FALL Choreography: Kirven Douthit-Boyd Music: “Night Flight” and “Groove Boxes” by Kenji Bunch performed by the Ahn Trio Costume Designer: Lindsey Thurston Lighting Designer: Austin Shirley Rehearsal Assistant: Sarah Jack Production Assistant: Jodi DeAngelis Cast: Lindsay Ball, Cellise Brown, Katherine Cornell, Andie Duong, Mykaela Johnson, Mackenzie Lawrence, Tori Loper, Madelyn Manlove, Avery Moore, Kyla Patton, Myrah Porter, Ashley Stone, Kayla White Understudies: Lizzy Blade, Ivana Castañeda, Carolina Azteca Sirias From the Choreographer I’m inspired by sound. I listen to music and imagine patterns of bodies sweeping through vast spaces. During the creative process, I love to explore an array of shapes and configurations of dancers that are both established and disrupted by movement. It is this method, in collaboration with the young artists, that inspires the narrative of my work. I always engage in dialogue with the dancers to create a special atmosphere during the process. The result (I hope) is a ballet with which all of the dancers can feel a deep level of connection.

SCAR Choreography: Andrea Beckham Music: “Sull’aria...che soave zeffiretto” and “L’ho perduta, me meschina” from Le nozze di Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras Licensed by Concord Music Group, Inc. Heals over the scarred place, makes a road” (Naomi Shihab Nye), among other things . . . love, liberty, equality, reciprocity, repetition, restatement . . . with the body as a conduit.

VOICES, SHE Choreography: Sandra Organ Solis Costume Designer: Hsiao-Wei Chen Lighting Designer: Austin Shirley Rehearsal Assistant: Emma Steelman Production Assistant: Bridget Caston Cast: Kelsey Bacic, Hanna Bailey, Alexandra Behar, Brooke Bower, Ivana Castañeda, Bridget Caston, Lilian Collins, Katherine Cornell, Gracie Davis, Jodi DeAngelis, Kolina Hocevar, Andreina Hurtado, Kaitlyn Jones, Tori Loper, Madelyn Manlove, Amanda Moogerfeld, Avery Moore, Antonia Neal, Addison Norman, Kyla Patton, Ana Samantha Rosas-Mantilla, Taylor Schmuelgen, Brooke Shore, Emily Tolson Understudy: Emma Steelman From the Choreographer This work is inspired by the waves of women, who—with their loving actions, heroic deeds, poetic words and artful songs—have inspired, empowered and uplifted our humanity with their presence in our lives: our mothers, daughters, sisters, queens, angels, fighters, dreamers and girls.

SOMETIMES: LIFE–GATES & KEYS Choreography: Raphael Xavier Music and Sound Design: Raphael Xavier Costume Designer: Austin Alvarez Lighting Designer: Austin Shirley Rehearsal Assistant: Carolina Azteca Sirias Production Assistant: Christian Leal Cast: Makiah Galan, Ginnifer Joe, Becky Nam, Jesse Quezada, Sarah Wales Opening solo: Kialond Bronson-Smith, Matthew James, Christian Leal Understudies: Kialond Bronson-Smith, Christian Leal, Carolina Azteca Sirias From the Choreographer “...the point of Xavier’s work is how [the dancers] subsume their individual styles into a group effort that’s less about showing off and more about exploring the essence of breakdancing.” —The Boston Globe My goal is to continue moving as I mature in a form that’s associated with the youth. As I pass on my technique of the Breaking form, I think about the longevity, sustainability and accessibility of the dance. It’s about taking apart, deciphering, decoding, putting back together and finding solutions for the individual goal. That’s what Breaking is for me. As long as I can Break things I can make things.

PULSE Choreography: Bridget L. Moore Costume Designer: Hsiao-Wei Chen Lighting Designer: Austin Shirley Rehearsal Assistant: Matthew James Production Assistant: Raquel Baron Cast: Raquel Baron, Cellise Brown, Kennedy Cannon, Katherine Cornell, David Cruz, Atticus Griffin, Madelyn Manlove, Avery Moore, Briah Napier, Antonia Neal, Addison Norman, Kyla Patton, Skylar Phan, Mario Alberto Ramirez, Khorii Tinson, Emily Tolson, Kayla White Understudies: Matthew James

REFLECTS/REFLEX Choreography: Erica Gionfriddo Music: “Mitosis by Eliot Gray Fisher Costume Designer: Stephanie Fisher Lighting Designer: Austin Shirley Rehearsal Assistant: Alexandra Behar Production Assistant: Kialond Bronson-Smith Cast X: (Performing March 6, 8, 9 (7:30 p.m.), 13 and 15): Hanna Bailey, Lindsay Ball, Bridget Caston, Makiah Galan, Georgina Garza, Mykaela Johnson, Brooke Shore Understudy: Sarah Wales Cast O: (Performing March 5, 7, 9 (2:00 p.m.), 10, and 14): Raquel Baron, Allison Hamauei, Sarah Jack, Mackenzie Lawrence, Briah Napier, Skylar Phan, Ashley Stone, Azari Sumbler From the Choreographer A small square of light encloses a group of dancers. A relentless rhythm demands they stay in motion. Bound by time and space, they must discover whether a breakthrough is possible alone and when they must act together. When our reflex is to conform, can reflective thought break an unproductive cycle? When the conscious confines us, can intuition unlock new spaces? And what if the processes of asserting our individuality is the same process by which we find community?

PAUSE

IDỌ̀BÁLẸ̀ Choreography: Charles O. Anderson Costume Designer: Lindsey Thurston Lighting Designer: Austin Shirley Rehearsal and Production Assistant: Andie Duong This piece developed and performed by the entire ensemble of Dance Repertory Theatre. From the Choreographer Remembering Haruka… She has been gone longer than I actually knew her… but she is indelibly etched into my memory. Every time we bring back an old memory, we run the risk of changing it. It’s more like opening a document on a computer—the old information enters a surprisingly vulnerable state when it can be edited, overwritten or even deleted. It takes a while for the memory to become strengthened anew through a process called reconsolidation. Memories aren’t just created once, but every time we remember them. This spring, Haruka Weiser would have graduated from our dance program. This piece is my humble attempt to offer her a ceremony to mark that occasion. Idọ̀bálẹ̀ is the Yoruba concept of showing respect upon greeting and leaving. It reflects a cyclical process and reverence for life and death. I chose this title in dedication to Haruka and her classmates. We often think of showing respect to our elders, but since Haruka’s untimely passing I have been confronted with the passing of so many young people and have taken strength and inspiration from the resiliency and bravery of their peers.
