NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURG & DIRECTOR Anne Frank wrote her last diary entry on August 1, 1944 musing on the duality of her nature and how her “lighter superficial side” always won over her “finer and better side” in front of others. She describes this “finer and better side” as being “deeper,” “sentimental,” “nice” and “happy.” It is her fear of not being taken seriously that informs her decision to keep her inner-self secret; to disclose it only to Kitty, her diary. As Eleanor Roosevelt wrote in the introduction to Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, “it is [Anne’s] portrait which emerges so vividly and so appealingly from this book.”

Anne’s diary is, above all, the story of a teenage girl living under extraordinary circumstances; through it, we are given a glimpse into how the Nazi occupation of Holland affected a group of eight Jews hiding in fear and isolation. The Goodrich and Hackett dramatization of her diary concentrates two years of life in hiding into a two-hour Broadway

play for a contemporary (1950s) audience. Naturally, the diary had to be condensed, whole swaths of time had to be passed over and both the playwrights and Mr. Frank himself made editing choices with the sensitivities of the audience in mind. After all, 1955, the year the play premiered, was not so far removed from the events of the Holocaust as to warrant vivid reminders for the audience. 2015, which marks the 70th anniversary of Anne’s death and the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, is a much different story. The production you are about to see honors this Pulitzer Prize-winning play while also attempting to integrate a perspective informed by recent scholarship and the passage of 60 years. We hope, above all, to share with you the story of this remarkable young woman whose imagination, spirit and brilliance is far more enduring than any cruelty the Nazis could inflict.

TEXAS PERFORMING ARTS

CREATIVE TEAM LAURA BAGGS (Dramaturg) is a first-year Ph.D. candidate in the Performance as Public Practice Program. Baggs is an artist scholar who uses practice-based research to investigate gender and issues of in/equality.

As an artist scholar she works as a director, playwright, performer and dramaturg.

SCOTT BUSSEY (Technical Director) graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee with a B.F.A. in Technical Production for theatre. Bussey has been the technical director for the Ogunquit Playhouse, North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and Dallas Theater Company, among others. Most recently, he was the head of the carpentry department for Cirque du Soleil's production of Alegria at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, MS. Bussey has been the technical director for Texas Performing Arts at The University of Texas at Austin since September of 2000.

BEN CAMPBELL (Sound Designer) is a first-year B.A. Theatre and Dance major with a focus in sound design and is pursuing a certificate in Digital Art and Media through the Digital Arts Scholars program. The Diary of Anne Frank is Campbell’s first production at The University of Texas at Austin.

JULIE MAURY (Stage Manager) is a fourthyear B.A. Theatre and Dance major with a focus in stage and production management. Past management experience includes Peter and the Starcatcher and The Who’s Tommy at ZACH Theatre, as well as Wish and (UTNT) UT New Theatre at The University of Texas at Austin. Maury spent the summer working as a stage management intern for Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity.

After completing her Business Foundations Certificate from the McCombs School of Business and graduating in the fall of 2015, Maury plans to continue pursuing a career with Cirque du Soleil.

DAVID MOLINA-GARZA (Scenic Designer) began his career as a set designer in Monterrey, Mexico. He has worked in the fields of theatre, dance, music performance, musical theatre and corporate special events. He is a current M.F.A. candidate in Design and Technology with a focus in scenic design at The University of Texas at Austin. His work includes: Les Misérables, The Foreigner, The Imaginary Invalid, Orphans, Treasure Island, Don Gil de las Calzas Verdes, 1822 El Año que Fuimos Imperio and Hamlet. In the United States, his recent work includes Cenicienta, which was staged earlier this year at the ZACH Theatre in Austin, Texas.

MATT SMITH (Projection Designer) is a third-year M.F.A. Design and Technology candidate with a focus in integrated media for live performance. Most recently, his work at The University of Texas at Austin has included Ears, Eyes + Feet (2014, 2015), Das Lied von der Erde, the Texas Theatre and Dance 75th Anniversary Celebration and The Cohen New Works Festival installation, Chord (2015).

PO-YANG SUNG (Lighting Designer) is originally from Taipei, Taiwan. Sung graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) with a B.F.A. in Lighting Design. Sung designs lighting for theatre, dance and music, and is a third-year M.F.A. Design and Technology candidate with a focus in lighting design at The University of Texas at Austin. Before pursuing his graduate degree in the United States, he worked as a freelance lighting designer and assistant lighting designer in Taiwan.

KELSEY VIDIC (Costume Designer) is a second-year M.F.A. Design and Technology candidate with a focus in costume design at The University of Texas at Austin. Most recently she designed costuming for dance choreography by Yacov Sharir and Kate Watson-Wallace. In addition, she designed costuming for Poor Boys' Chorus.

CAST ELI WEINBERG (Mr. Frank) got his start acting in middle and high school shows in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Currently he is pursuing a B.F.A. in Acting from The University of Texas at Austin. Past credits include “Ted” in Enter a Woman, Pretty Enough, “Dennis Shepard” in The Laramie Project and “Despair Kid” in Kinderliminal.

After graduation, Weinberg plans to return to Chicago to start a theatre company or music venue and immerse himself in the Chicago theatre scene.

NATALIE PATTON (Miep) is a third-year student in the B.F.A. Acting program at The University of Texas at Austin. Most recently, she created and performed in Life, Love, and What I Lost: A Song Cycle, which was presented as part of the 2015 Cohen New Works Festival. Other roles include "Doreen" in Poor Boys’ Chorus by Brian Kettler and "Girl" in Tennessee Williams' Green Eyes. Patton will graduate in spring of 2017.

BAYLIE FIGUEROA (Mrs. Van Daan) is a second-year B.F.A. Theatre Studies major at The University of Texas at Austin. Most recently, Figueroa performed in Enter a Woman, Pretty Enough as "John" and in When the Rain Stops Falling as "Older Elizabeth Law." After graduating, Figueroa plans to teach theatre in a high school or middle school setting.

IAN PRICE (Mr. Van Daan) is a fourth-year B.A. Theatre and Dance and Radio-Television-Film dual major with a focus in acting.

He has recently been seen in As You Like It as “Le Beau,” When the Rain Stops Falling as “Henry Law” and “Virgil” in the World’s Greatest Adventurer Production’s audio drama, Night Warrior. Price plans to move to Los Angeles after he graduates to focus on becoming a voice actor.

ROBERT DI DONATO (Peter Van Daan) is entering his third year at The University of Texas at Austin. His past roles include “Flynn” in Purification (The Cohen New Works Festival, 2015); a member of the ensemble in Refugia (Texas Theatre and Dance, The Moving Company); and “Co-Worker” in Karlstad (UTNT (UT New Theatre)). Other work includes media programming for Into the Woods (Texas Theatre and Dance) and directing Eurydice (Eagle Co.), Pillowman (Eagle Co.) and The Beauty Queen of Leenane (Round About Players). Di Donato is a founding member of the Undergraduate Advisory Council.

IZABELLA ARNOLD (Mrs. Frank) was born and raised in Bermuda. Most recently, she performed in Operation Istanbul (The Cohen New Works Festival, 2015) and Esperanza Rising (Texas Theatre and Dance) as "Ramona." After graduating in May 2016 with a dual B.A. in Theatre and Dance and English, Arnold plans to continue her studies in the United Kingdom.

KRISTEN RANEY (Margot Frank) is a second-year in the B.F.A. Acting program.

Recent credits include “Mary” in Lyla School (UTNT (UT New Theatre)), “Celia” in As You Like It, “Abigail” in The Crucible and “Alice” in Alice in Wonderland.

ELLIE DUBIN (Anne Frank) originally hails from Los Angeles, California and is a second-year student in the B.F.A. Acting program at The University of Texas at Austin. Dubin recently played “Rosalind” in Texas Theatre and Dance’s production of As You Like It.

CHANCE STEWARD (Mr. Kraler) began performing in high school in the North Texas area. Most recently, he performed in the department’s production of As You Like It as "Orlando" and in After and Life, Love, and What I Lost as part of the Cohen New Works Festival (2015). After graduating in 2017 with B.F.A. in Acting, Steward plans to pursue a career in film.

JADON HATLEY (Mr. Dussel) began acting at Seminole High School. His most recent performances include As You Like It as "Oliver" and Kinderliminal as "Alex.�

Hatley is currently a second-year in the B.F.A. Acting program and plans to move to Los Angeles, California after graduation to further pursue acting.
