12 Ophelias received its professional premiere with Woodshed Collective in New York City under Teddy Bergman’s direction. It was developed at Vassar College, New Georges, New Dramatists and Baruch College. 12 Ophelias (a play with broken songs) is produced by special arrangement with the Playwright and Elaine Devlin Literary, Inc. 411 Lafayette Street, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10003.
NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR I was a green girl when I fell for Shakespeare; unsifted and honey-drunk on music. Like Ophelia, my love left me feeling singular and sacred, astonished by the potent force of language. My second love was resilient women; an ongoing affair that blossomed after watching my best friend disintegrate. Her love isolated her, restricting her space until she atrophied into something twodimensional and impossible to reach. She brought herself back from the dead—a jagged and painful path that shaped the abundantly complex, self-possessed woman I know today. Shakespeare shaped me and our love was good; expansive and three-dimensional. He taught me to think, feel and create. But the more I did those things, the more I associated him with my anger about how female narratives are constructed and perpetuated, with my loneliness as the only woman in rooms full of men. 12 Ophelias (a play with broken songs) by Caridad Svich, tells the story of a once-wretched girl whose love for a Rude Boy destroyed her. The play is a vibrant remembrance of my own first love, crammed full of visceral language, unabashed theatricality and human beings in all their filth and glory. This time though, Svich imagines the green girl and her rude boy as deeply-riddled heroes who might just be brave enough to love themselves.
