The Volunteer responsibility

PATRICK BUSCH 2026-27 Editor-in-Chief Arriving at a large, flagship school like The University of Tennessee can be overwhelming. Coming from St. Louis, Missouri, I showed up to a new city, in a new state, knowing nobody. It may take a little while, but sooner or later, UT will become your home, and you will find where you fit on campus.

The best advice I could give you is to get involved. Say yes to every opportunity that comes your way, because your time here will move quickly, and before you know it, you’ll be an upperclassman and then on your way out of this incredible institution. What UT offers is a community and experience unlike any other in the country.

The Daily Beacon is your guide to what happens on and around campus. Decisions are made every day, in offices and boardrooms across the state that affect you and your experience. Our team works day-in and day-out to track and report the news that matters to you: the Volunteer community.

We are the independent, student-run institution on campus providing a voice for all students and stakeholders. Pick up the paper every Wednesday morning when it gets dropped off in dorms, academic buildings and communal spaces across campus. Follow us on social media to see live updates of what’s happening. Read stories on our website to get a comprehensive understanding of the things happening to you.

You, the student, shape our environment. We want to hear from you when you have a question, a concern or want to better understand something in our community.

The cornerstone of a university is the sharing and discussion of wide-ranging viewpoints. Engage in challenging conversations with your peers. When you’re walking down Pedestrian Walkway and see a group tabling, stop by and see what other people believe. Be open to the idea that the other person might be right, that you might not have the full story.

Letter from the Managing Editor:

Everything you’ve heard is true (kind of) LAUREN HOLLADAY Fall ‘26 Managing Editor I have spent the past three days trying to figure out what to write in this letter — my first as managing editor.

More specifically, I have been trying to figure out what not to write — as in, how to avoid the clichés that usually blanket the college experience. It is the unfortunate truth, however, that college is basically a bunch of clichés wrapped and tied in a (Tennessee orange) bow. And I am here to tell you that, unfortunate or not, it is a hundred times more enjoyable if you embrace that.

I’ve learned that the older you get, the more clichés you encounter. “Time flies when you are having fun.” “Enjoy the small things.”

“Find your people.” “These are the best four years of your life.”

But I’ve also found most of these clichés to be true, regardless of how annoying they are to hear.

My time as an undergraduate has

gone by incredibly fast (even faster if you factor in my early graduation). There have been times — both good and bad — that I have felt were never going to end, but trust me, they do. Time truly does fly when you are having fun, and being a Vol is as fun as it gets. Embrace that, and be where your feet are — “you can sleep when you’re 80,” as my grandmother likes to say.

Your time here is limited. Get involved (yet another cliché), and do so early. Find a club or a team or a group of friends and make an effort to engage. Knoxville has so much to offer you, so take advantage of it.

Though college is a wonderful time to explore yourself and who you want to be, let me quickly contradict myself. Yes, find yourself, but I urge you, stay connected to others too.

Pour into people that pour into you.

Call your parents, your siblings and your long distance best friend. There is a balance to be found between navigating your newfound independence and holding on to your roots.

At the end of the day, learning

that balance is exactly what you are here for. I, unfortunately, can’t give you an exact science for being a Vol, but I can tell you that what you build here is entirely your own. No matter how your time in Knoxville unfolds, I promise that UT will begin to feel like more than a place you go to school. Let it.

Your time here is what you make it, so why not make it the best four years of your life? However long you are here, make UT your home — I know I’ve made it mine.

Hall basement at midnight, surrounded by my newfound family as we all shoved our faces in bowls of Rice Krispies for a cereal-eating contest, I had the feeling I was finally home.

If you’re one of the rare few who are completely ready to start this new adventure, I applaud you.

However, if you’re a part of the vast majority of those shaking in trepidation, I have one message for you: embrace the change.

The University of Tennessee is an immense source of opportunity.

Whether you’re exploring Greek life, signing up for intramural sports, or figuring out what extracurriculars to join, UT has a home for you. It may take longer than expected to find it, but it is there.

As you step foot on campus for the first day of classes, trustworthy Google Maps steed in hand, I encourage you to take a good look around at the uncharted territory before you. In this strange new land,

Letter from the Managing Editor: Embrace the change Change is hard. At the same time, it’s pretty spectacular.

When I was preparing for my freshman year of college, I felt an immense pit in my stomach as I imagined starting anew, hundreds of miles from home and my closest friends. As my parents helped me move into Stokely Hall in August, I remember questioning whether I even belonged at UT. However, for every freshman, there’s also one unmistakable moment where you think for the first time, “I’m going to be okay here.”

Mine came on the weekend before the first day of school. On the night of the Welcome Carnival, I expected a long, awkward evening of feeling out of place yet again. However, when I found myself dying of laughter in the Clement

You never know which random lab partner becomes your best friend, or which interest meeting you attend on a whim becomes your community.

Incoming Vols, I urge you to remember that not all fear is a threat.

Embrace the change, and one day soon, Rocky Top will be Home Sweet Home to you, too.

Letter from the Student Body President: “Everyone’s a member” CAROLINE MARCUS Student Body President New Volunteers, Welcome to Rocky Top, your new home.

This place is special. It’s more than just a campus, it’s a community. A Volunteer is something you are, and it is a continuous choice we make every day to serve, to show up and to care.

I came to UT as an out-of-state student knowing no one, excited but unsure. Looking back, I never could have imagined how much this experience would shape me.

The people, the opportunities and the community truly allowed me to grow, connect and find my place here.

Tennessee will pour into you just as much as you pour into it. I encourage all of you to take advantage of this, and build your own experience. So get involved, introduce yourself to the stranger sitting next to you in class and try something new. There is no better time than right now.

Our motto in the Student Government Association is “Everyone’s a Member,” and it truly embodies our mission. We are a space for every student on this campus, and exist to serve you. As an organization we work to meet you where you are at, and hear your voice, your unique experiences and your vision for our campus.

We intentionally advocate for all students, to make our campus better for every Volunteer. We are here to be a resource and support system for all of you. Whether you have concerns, an idea, or simply want a community to belong to, we are here for you.

Whether you’re from just down the road, or across the country, starting college is something that is new at some point in time for everyone. It is not uncommon to feel overwhelmed or nervous. Just know that there is space for you here in this community, for life. Make the most of every moment of it.

MYTH

“It’s so hilly and it takes forever to walk anywhere on this campus”

FACT

Almost every school building that freshmen living in the dorms may need to access is within a 15-minute walk.

There are a few exceptions, but the locations of the dorms and the layout of campus allow for a generally short, scenic walk from building to building.

As for the hills, it’s true that East Tennessee isn’t the flattest of regions.

But despite UT’s campus being surrounded by mountains, the most incline students typically encounter is the 93-step staircase to “The Hill.”

Although The Hill may appear daunting, it’s rare for most students to have to conquer it more than once a day. The trek also doesn’t add more than a minute or two to a student’s full journey.

MYTH

Throughout high school, students are repeatedly told by instructors and administrators that college professors won’t accept unserious behavior.

FACT

While it’s important to treat college faculty with respect, many professors appreciate having some fun from time to time.

Take Matthew Pittman’s social media strategy class, for one – in this course, students can expect TikToks, sweet treats and impromptu performances by the UT Singers while balanced with academically rigorous coursework.

This level of spontaneity and fun not only “flies” at UT, it’s also sometimes encouraged by professors to create a positive and engaging learning environment.

“You don’t have to go to class”

FACT

There are a lot of new freedoms that freshmen gain in college, and it may seem easy to take certain liberties with class attendance.

However, making sure to attend as many classes as possible is crucial for keeping good grades.

Students may be told they can skip as much as they want in college, but showing up to class is extremely necessary for academic success, and ensures you don’t miss out on key details and assignments.

“You have to sign your lease for the following year immediately”

MYTH

It’s true that there are times throughout the year when local apartment complex prices may fluctuate.

FACT

The race for freshmen to sign a lease for the following year as quickly as possible will seem urgent, but it’s unnecessary to give in to the peer pressure and sign a contract as soon as possible.

Also, remember that most leases end in late summer, so if you’re looking to get a fort house, it could be beneficial to hold off until they start to open up.

There are plenty of opportunities throughout the year for students to get good deals on housing throughout Knoxville, so signing a lease straight away is non-essential to ensuring affordable living.

How to survive the BRIDGET FLAHERTY Contributor Every UT freshman has been there – alone, standing lost in the middle of Ped Walkway as a sea of students surrounds you.

Google Maps buzzes in your hand, attempting to guide you to your next class. You turn down unfamiliar roads and pass unrecognizable landmarks, feeling as if finding your way around is impossible at this school. However, the combination of homesickness, new classes and the anxiety of what freshman year may hold will ultimately lead to a unique, exciting experience never encountered before.

But just like most new experiences, what you need is a bit of advice on how to adjust, especially to the intensity of college life for when you first arrive at the UT.

Work hard to build relationships early on Move-in day is a blur of boxes, bags, and even some blood, sweat and tears.

After your family drops you off, the last thing you may want to do is sleep six feet away from someone you might have just met. However, during the first week you have the opportunity to find a routine with your roommate and can get to the fun part of forging a new connection.

A solid relationship is always formed on mutual respect, so take this seriously when beginning your transition to college life at UT. Developing your roommate bond will help to keep the peace at home, but forming relationships around campus is equally as important. Throughout your first week, try out sitting next to a few different people in class to see who you click with the most.

There’s no need to stress over approaching new faces – everyone is just as

nervous and eager to make friends.

Finding your people isn't always a straight path. It may take time for you to find your closest friends, so don’t get discouraged, especially during the first week. The person you sit next to in your freshman year gen-ed could become your best friend for life, or maybe they’re just someone you can ask for class notes from when you’re sick.

Either way, putting yourself out there to connect with classmates that first week is never a bad idea. Trying to make friends will feel uncomfortable and awkward no matter what. Sometimes the friendships will work out, and sometimes they won’t.

Work hard to build relationships early on, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself to find your best friends during the first week at UT. No matter what, there is a whole campus of fellow Vols there to support you and help you find the people who feel like home.

BALANCE IS KEY From the moment you commit to a college, everybody in your life may start overwhelming you with advice on how to make college the best four years of your life.

The phrase “say yes to everything” is constantly thrown in your face and etched into your brain.

While this constant nagging can get repetitive, don’t write off this guidance too quickly. Like everyone says, college will truly be one of the most transformative periods of your life, and it should not be taken for granted.

If you want to join an organization you never had the chance to in high school, do it. If you want to flip the script on your introvertedness, start to take risks and talk to someone new each day. Stepping out of your comfort zone and into the unknown is terrifying, but sometimes, you just have to do it anyway.

This advice is great for getting you out of your bubble, but know that you can also take a step back and reserve time for yourself. Take the time to find your perfect balance between staying grounded and experiencing everything UT has to offer.

Gameday Ready on a Budget: Staying Stylish at Neyland Without Breaking the Bank Sophie Mehta, 2025-26 Audience Development Editor Your first gameday at Neyland Stadium as a student is nothing short of surreal.

Finally being able to be a part of that vivacious sea of orange, better known as the student section, means being part of tradition that goes beyond just sports. You are now part of a community that will make every Saturday in the fall for the next four years feel like magic.

With all this magic comes a little pressure. Everywhere you look, Tennessee fans and students alike are decked out in boots, checkers, vintage UTK pieces, and just the right accessories to pull everything together. Being around this can make you wonder how in the world full-time students are affording it, but we are here to tell you that gameday style is not nearly as expensive as it seems, that is, if you know where to look.

Rental Services

One of the easiest ways to keep up with the ever-changing gameday trends without overspending is by renting instead of buying. Platforms like Nuuly and Pickle make it easy to rotate multiple pieces in your wardrobe for a fraction of the price. Many of these platforms also offer student discounts and first-time deals.

Renting is especially useful for statement pieces that you may only wear once or twice, particularly for one-time gameday themes. It gives you an opportunity to experiment with trends you may not otherwise try. Most importantly, renting is a sustainable option. Instead of giving in to fast fashion, it extends the life of each piece and reduces waste.

Thrift Stores

Thrifting offers a creative way to build a gameday wardrobe on a budget, especially with so many great local options available here in Knoxville. Stores like Planet Xchange, Finders Keepers and French Fried Vintage carry a wide range of unique pieces at significantly lower prices than retail. Additional stores like KARM and Goodwill can provide unexpected finds you might not find elsewhere.

These stores are ideal for sourcing essentials like denim, simple dresses, and layering pieces, while also giving you the change to discover vintage UT merchandise that will add character to any outfit. Another game-changing advantage is that many of these stores will offer you cash or store credit for clothing you bring in, allowing you to consistently refresh your wardrobe.

Local Boutiques

If you are looking for options that feel a little more curated, local boutiques in Knoxville are a great option, especially in a pinch. Boutiques like Pink & Proper, Apricot Lane and Lizard Thicket have gameday-ready outfits stocked, along with accessories styled to go with them. These boutiques have friendly staff who will help you style outfits, making the process a lot easier.

While these kinds of stores can be a bit more on the pricey side, planning ahead or shopping during sales can make them much more affordable.

Following these boutiques on social media can also help you stay updated on the latest arrivals and discounts.

Shopping at these local boutiques not only helps you build your wardrobe but also supports small businesses in the Knoxville community.

Online Finds

Another easy way to build your gameday look, especially if you have specific pieces in mind, is by shopping online through second-hand platforms like Depop, Poshmark and ThredUp. These platforms make it easier to find trendy pieces without paying the full price. Depop is great for vintage items, Poshmark is useful for more recognizable brands, and ThredUp is a low-effort option if you want something even more straightforward.

What also makes these platforms appealing is that they give you the option to resell your items later. If you buy something for a gameday and do not see yourself wearing it again, you can use a pre-filled listing and make some of your money back. These platforms offer a more sustainable way to shop, similar to rental services, since clothing is being reused and kept in circulation rather than constantly produced and discarded.

Swiping right on freshman year: A guide to your UTK mobile makeover GIA SCHEELS Contributor

When learning about an unfamiliar place, it can be stressful to figure out everything you need to succeed. It’s easy to get caught up and forget about useful mobile features that can get you up, running and ahead of the college game.

Here is a list of some essential apps to download and handy Instagram accounts to follow to help make your first year at UTK a little easier.

Apps to download Tennessee app

The University of Tennessee app is your one-stop shop for anything you might need as a student. You can access information and locations for dining, parking, bus and T-link transportation, and it includes a searchable map of campus with building names and labels. You can also access tickets, calendars, account balances and fees, the VolShop, grades and TREC memberships and activities. It is a must-have for all UTK students and covers essentially everything on campus.

Tennessee Athletics

The Tennessee Athletics app lets you purchase and access your student and regular tickets for UTK sporting events by linking your school Ticketmaster account. It has a schedule that covers all UTK sports games, and you can listen to or watch media from each event, including podcasts. It also publishes photo galleries and news stories surrounding sporting and other athletic events.

YikYak

YikYak contains the good, bad and just plain random goings-on around campus. It is an anonymous app where UTK students can join the campus community and post about current events and trending topics to share their opinions and pictures. You can often find quick information about campus and class updates, parking and weather.

Good Notes

Popular for organized, productive note-taking, Good Notes is an app designed for mobile class note-taking on iPhone or iPad. You can use voice-totext to transcribe lectures, create and draw graphs or charts, add folders and organize notes, summarize lectures and design presentations all in one app.

Grubhub

Grubhub for the University of Tennessee is a must-have if you plan to order food ahead for pickup or delivery from anywhere on campus. The app shows all available dining options when connected to your UTK email. It provides wait times, food discounts and offers, and it’s how you can order a Starship robot to deliver food to your dorm or other building on campus. You can switch between On-Campus Vol Dining and Off-campus dining options.

Accounts to follow @Your college and/or major account

Following your college or major’s Instagram account is essential for staying up to date on important updates and announcements at your school of choice. They highlight student and staff work and give insider information about the who’s, what’s and where’s that are going on. These accounts usually start with “UTK” in the username, followed by your school’s name. If you haven’t declared a major, check out the pages of some majors you are interested in!

@utkstudentlife

To follow along with on-campus events and student organization activity, the UTK Student Life Instagram account is the place to go. They highlight important events, students and resources you might need to stay in the loop around campus.

@utkhousing

The UTK Housing Instagram account keeps you up to date on housing announcements, important dates, resident assistant information and dorm news you might have missed. It is a great resource for first-year students and parents to see what’s going on with housing at UTK.

@downtownknox

Knoxville’s downtown is vibrant and social, filled with history and a variety of recreation. The Downtown Knox Instagram account covers all things downtown, including events happening across the city and local food and drink spots to visit. It’s a great way to engage with the downtown area and take advantage of all Knoxville has to offer.

@utkdailybeacon

The Daily Beacon Instagram account is a go-to page for everything you need to know about and around UTK, including news, arts and culture, sports and more. The page features short-form content of articles published on both The Daily Beacon website and in the paper, making all the important information easily accessible on your phone.

Unique Ways to Get Involved

ELLEN BURKETT Contributor Upon coming to Rocky Top, I had always heard there was a place for everyone.

The wide variety of clubs and organizations appeared to be a core of UT’s culture. Greek life and sports were all I really knew about, and if there was one thing I wish my freshman year self could’ve known, it’s that — although those are amazing parts of UT — there are so many other ways to get involved.

Ranging from the milk and cookies club to the UTK rock climbing club, there really are endless opportunities to find your place here.

Every student has a chance to find their place regardless of skill or experience. Clarence Brown theatre is the professional theatre here on campus, but first-year students who have a passion for theatre can audition and even perform in shows. And if that isn’t your thing, there are also many ways to get involved behind the scenes.

2025-26 freshman Truman May described his experience as welcoming and “an excellent representation of what the arts should be about.”

Not only did he meet many friends, but also mentors, who he says “have made his transition into campus life so much easier.”

In addition, UT has many musical groups such as choir, band, and orchestra. Even if you aren’t majoring in something through the college of

music, you can still join these groups, take lessons, or take classes.

Another fantastic way to get involved on campus is by church groups! UTK has an assortment of campus ministries, so it’s certain you can find your perfect fit. RUF (Reformed University Fellowship), is a presbyterian ministry that gathers every Tuesday at the Redeemer church where students can grab hotdogs, sing along to worship music, listen to a short sermon, and socialize with friends. The community is tight, and there are many friendly faces of the ministry who want to get to know you!

RUF is one of the bigger campus ministries, but if you are looking for something smaller, don’t fear! Vol Catholic / St. John XXIII is a catholic ministry on campus that is a bit smaller. They host a mass on Sunday evenings at 5:30 p.m., followed by a dinner cooked by volunteers.

Freshman Liz Dellorco, who has found her place at St. John, notes she was worried about trying a new church but now it feels like a home to her.

“Mass keeps me engaged, I love going with my group of friends, and I meet new people every time I go,” Dellorco said.

Lastly, Tennessee has many student media and film groups. Whether you love to write, make art/graphics, or are interested in film, there is an organization for you. Tennessee Club Sports Network (TCSN) is a student-run media organization that broadcasts and produces all

kinds of sports content. Whether you like to take photos for fun, or have a true passion for doing play-by-play commentating, TCSN works with all kinds of talents and gives real experience to students.

Caroline Murphy, a member of TCSN and a sports management major, wanted hands-on experience and a tight knit group of people who shared her interests.

“When I found out about this organization, I knew that I had to join. Learning how to photograph sports in the last year has been a journey.

I have learned a valuable skill that will help me stand out in internship and job applications,” Murphy said.

She can attest to the fact that even if she came in as a freshman with little to no experience, she was able to grow and explore her strengths in this club. Although she gained lots of experience, she “more importantly found a community who shares the passion for sports and a new hobby.”

The Daily Beacon is another organization that is open to all students where you can write, take photos, edit, design and more. Not only can you meet new friends and people with the same passions as you, but you can also use your talent and passion even with little past experience on your hands.

With that being said, there are even more ways to get involved at UTK. Whether it is artistic, sporty, religious or a random, fun club, there is a group of students that you will fit right in with!

Maximizing your meal swipe as a freshman KELA FIFER Contributor Leaning into college life comes with a learning curve. You have to find your footing in a new place, with new people, on an unfamiliar schedule and even a new lifestyle. Though these changes can be overwhelming and confusing, one thing doesn’t need to be: food. Understanding how to use your meal swipe when you reach Rocky Top can help ease some anxieties toward the unknown and help make your transition a bit smoother.

Meal Plans The university has made two main meal plans available to incoming freshmen: the Tennessee Unlimited 7 and Tennessee Unlimited 5.

By default, freshmen are put on the Unlimited 7 plan. This plan is best suited for students living on campus since it gives you unlimited meal swipes every day of the week, including weekends. However, if you find yourself away for the weekends, the Unlimited 5 is an alternative choice which provides you with unlimited meal swipes for weekdays only. When choosing which meal plan to get, a good course of action is to decide which option best compliments your schedule.

Meal plans not only come with meal swipes, but they also supply students with pre-paid funds called Dining Dollars. Those who choose the Unlimited 7 plan receive 300 Dining Dollars while those who enroll in the Unlimited 5 plan receive 400.

Dining Dollars provide students flexibility when it comes to their dining choices. With Dining Dollars, students have the option to grab a bagel and coffee at K-Brew, build a bowl at Choolah or even pick up a quick snack at a P.O.D Market in between your classes. Dining Dollars can be used across campus at a wide variety of Vol Dining locations such as coffee shops, restaurants and convenience markets, and a comprehensive list of dining locations can be found on the Vol Dining website.

Meal Swipes Now that you’ve chosen a meal plan, the next step is figuring out how to use it and where you’re able

to use it.

There are three main dining halls on campus that freshmen have access to: Rocky Top Dining Hall, Stokely Dining Hall and Southern Kitchen. The dining halls offer a broad selection of all-you-can-eat options.

Each dining hall adheres to the breakfast, lunch and dinner meal plan periods. During the weekdays, the breakfast meal period is from open to 10:30 a.m., lunch runs from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and dinner at 4:30-10 p.m. Dining hall operation times are subject to change on the weekends.

The provided freshman meal plans grant students the ability to swipe into the dining hall an unlimited amount of times during each meal period. Unlimited swipes make it easy for students to grab a bite to eat at any time that is most convenient for their individualized schedules.

However, there is one exception to this rule: Southern Kitchen. Scanning into Southern Kitchen during one of the three meal periods prevents you from scanning into any of the other dining halls within that same meal period.

Southern Kitchen also closes earlier than the other dining halls at 8 p.m.

Cash Equivalency If you’re craving something other than the dining hall or simply don’t have time to sit down and eat, using your cash equivalency is something you might want to consider.

With a meal plan, you are allowed a cash equivalency worth $5.50.

This equivalency can be used in the place of a singular meal swipe during one meal period. This means that when cash equivalency is used, you are unable to scan into the dining hall within that same period.

Cash equivalency essentially takes the place of a meal swipe.

Of note, not every campus dining establishment utilizes cash equivalency for every meal period. Chickfil-A, for example, only allows students to use cash equivalency during the dinner meal period.

Many students opt to use their equivalency at places such as the P.O.D. Market to pick up a quick snack, but they can be used at a variety of on campus eateries such as dining in the Student Union, coffee shops and even at the recently built Cumberland Food Hall.

ANSLEY GRAVES 2025-26 Managing Editor The T: Link When you get to campus, you’ll start seeing big orange buses everywhere — that’s the T-Link!

The T: Link’s operation hours run from 6:00 pm and 7:00 am every night during the school year.

The T: Link services shuttle on UT’s Main campus, Ag campus, Park & Ride locations and the Fort Sanders neighborhood to Grand Avenue (excluding the Cumberland Avenue Strip).

As noted on parking.utk.edu, No T Access ID is required, however, students should call ahead during weekends and other busy events where requests are at a high volume.

Pick up can be requested through UT mobile app’s transit icon.

Park and Ride The Park and Ride system allows on and off-campus students to park their car downtown and take public transit to campus.

Located in Garage B at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum (502 Howard Baker Jr. Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37915). Operation hours are weekdays between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

For commuters, the annual Park and Ride rate is $99 to park downtown, and for noncommunters, lots are located off campus and serviced by the T bus at lot locations listed on On Rocky Top

Lime & Bird Scooters Scooters can be found anywhere on campus or downtown. To locate one, simply download the ‘Lime’ or ‘Bird’ app to track a ping near you.

Additionally, Lime offers an e-bicycle option for short-term rental.

Biking Bikes can be operated anywhere and everywhere on campus with the proper registration and permits.

While the bike itself requires cost, students can buy used bikes at a local thrift store or Facebook marketplace for a discounted price.

To pick up a free permit, visit UTOP Bike Shop at TRECs or Parking and Transportation services.

Uber One membership An Uber One membership is eligible for any student with proof of enrollment and valid ID. Currently, memberships start at $4.99/ month or $48 a year.

With the membership, students can receive a 10% discount on groceries, zero dollar Uber Eats

delivery fees and discounts for rides ordered on campus.

OPINION: Ranking iconic UT landmarks Greetings incoming freshmen! My name is Claire Thatcher and I am an opinions staff writer here at The Daily Beacon. While your first year of college may seem daunting, and you may find yourself stumbling around campus the first few days- have no fear. It will become second nature in no time. While you scramble to find your next class on Google Maps, let the following landmarks inspire you as you search. Let them remind you of the rich history of the school, the spirit of being a Volunteer and why choosing Rocky Top was the best choice you could have made.

The Torchbearer

The Torchbearer – an iconic symbol of Volunteer spirit, school pride and a guaranteed stop on your college tour.

The original design was proposed in 1931 by sculptor Theodore Andre Beck and was met with such backlash that protestors stormed the office of UT President Andy Holt. Apparently, the torchbearer wasn’t attractive enough to be the face of the University.

Beck made the necessary revisions, and ended up swapping a lantern for the now-signature torch – much more distinguished. A little grandiose for my Monday morning JMED class, and yeah, I wish he would put on some more clothes, but I respect the tradition.

Designed to inspire students to embody the Volunteer spirit long after college, the flame is literally inextinguishable. Through rain or shine, the Torchbearer reminds students that being a Vol is a commitment that never dies.

Smokey These statues are more than just Instagram photo-ops. There are 10 Smokeys on campus in total, each representing one of the real dogs chosen in the past to represent the mascot.

Located near Neyland Stadium, Smokey I represents the first dog chosen in 1953, during the halftime of a game against Mississippi State. Smokey II, located in Circle Park, was famously kidnapped by a group of students from the University of Kentucky in 1955.

And Smokey III, found on London Lake Boulevard, commemorates the longest-serving mascot (1965-76).

These statues are little reminders of the history and tradition that make Smokey the icon he is today – and of course that the University of Tennessee has the absolute cutest mascot in the entire SEC. I’m looking at you, Georgia.

Europa and the bull Europa and the Bull While the 2,645 pound bronze “Europa and the Bull” fountain may seem a little aggressive for McClung Plaza, I beg to differ.

The statue was cast in Sweden (ooh la la) and installed in 1968.

When UT acquired the cast, the agreement stipulated no additional statues could be made, making this one of just three in the world. It’s just us, Sweden and a little art school in Michigan.

Despite the amount of flip flops and khaki shorts that surround it daily, the statue lends a sense of sophistication to campus. And, of course, we have to dye the water orange every Homecoming.

The Rock In 1966, landscapers at the University of Tennessee uncovered a 97.5 ton rock. Its size intimidated contractors so they decided to leave it uncovered.

Over time that rock became “The Rock,”one of the most iconic landmarks on the UTK campus.

Located at the intersection of Pat Head Summit Street and Volunteer Boulevard, The Rock now acts as every UTK students’ personal message board. They can announce events, create art, make political statements – they can even demand the firing of head football coaches.

It’s all the best parts of college rolled into one – administration-permitted hijinks, the freedom to speak your mind and joining a long line of students that came before you that left their mark.

And if you ever want to know what’s on the rock, just tune in to its 24hour livestream.

Startling Whirlwind of opportunity Meant to represent the “labyrinth of dynamic possibilities” you experience in college, the statue has drawn its fair share of criticism since its unveiling in 2009.

The 20-foot aluminum structure sits at the top of a hill on Pedestrian Walkway. Every day, as I make the trek up Ped, I can’t help but wish it was a bench. Or a tree. Or one of those giant buckets they have at water parks that you can dump on your head by pulling a lever. Hey, it would be nice for hot days.

I’m not going to pretend to understand modern art, but nothing about this statue invigorates me about the dynamic prospects of college life.

A lot can happen in a year, especially on a bustling college campus with 14 colleges and schools, 50 Greek life chapters and over 40,000 students. Here are eight key headlines covering the 2025-26 school year’s top subjects, from Smokey to schoolwork.

Chancellor Plowman urges UT community to keep pushing forward in flagship address Every year, Chancellor Donde Plowman delivers a flagship address to UT students, faculty and supporters, unifying the campus community under common goals and accomplishments. Last fall, Plowman highlighted UT’s national-ranking academic programs and noted the progress of the university’s campus expansion projects. Plowman wrapped the address with a message to students, asking them to “pursue big, ambitious goals at a time when others are taking a more defensive posture.”

The ultimate walk-on: Tennessee’s new live mascot Smokey XII UT’s twelfth live Smokey mascot trotted onto Neyland Stadium’s Shields-Watkins Field for the first time in April for Tennessee football’s Orange and White game. The two-year-old Bluetick Coonhound underwent months of training for the prestigious appointment. His handlers say he loves treats and will bring a fresh personality to Neyland Stadium’s atmosphere.

New chemistry building marks biggest investments in Tennessee higher ed University and government officials broke ground for campus’s new chemistry building in September as UT continues to expand its Knoxville campus to accommodate bigger and brighter incoming freshman classes. The construction of the eight-story building comes from a $165.5 million government investment that Chancellor Plowman described as “crucial.”

Election day roundup: Knoxville’s winners and losers Local elections hooked Knoxville voters last November, with five Knoxville City Council seats up for grabs. Winners included District 1’s Karyn Adams, District 2’s Nathan Honeycutt, District 3’s Doug Lloyd, District 4’s Matthew DeBardelaben and District 6’s Denzel Grant. Knoxville voters also rejected Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon’s proposed tax increase.

Pride of the Southland names all-women leadership team for second time ever Tennessee football fans can expect to see women-led performances from UT’s Pride of the Southland Band this fall after the Natalie L. Haslam College of Music named two women the drum major and assistant drum major for the 2026-27 school year. Sydney Flenniken will serve as drum major, with Grace Dobrescu as her assistant.

Professors address rising political tensions on college campuses The nation saw political tensions hit extreme levels last year, especially on college campuses. Following tragedies and acts of violence, public affairs professors at UT spoke to The Daily Beacon about what students can do to fight political polarization. Professor Josh Dunn said it starts with “(making) friends with people you disagree with.”

UT to launch AI Hub late March As artificial intelligence encroaches on every aspect of higher education, UT is choosing to embrace the digital movement by building its own AI ecosystem, the UT AI Hub. The hub allows students to access premium versions of popular large language models to foster innovation and academic excellence.

Who will Tennessee football’s starting quarterback be?

A guide to the 3-man battle TREVOR MCGEE 2025-26 Sports Editor Hendon Hooker was the last Tennessee football quarterback to start two consecutive seasons.

The Vols are three years removed from his tenure, seeing Joe Milton III, Nico Iamaleava and Joey Aguilar take the reins since. The search for a starting quarterback in 2026 will yield another new name for Josh Heupel and company.

After exhausting Aguilar’s eligibility — falling short in court for an extra year — and missing on notable quarterbacking names in the transfer portal, Tennessee opted to pull redshirt junior Ryan Staub from Colorado to join a room with redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and true freshman Faizon Brandon.

One of the three will be the signal-caller when the Vols kick off the season against Furman in Neyland Stadium on Sept. 5. Here’s a guide to each passer in the room.

Tennessee’s 2026 freshman class gem impressed in spring practices with his athletic 6-foot-4, 215-pound build that allowed him to become one of the nation’s best prospects.

That same frame will give him a boost over the elder MacIntyre. While MacIntyre has added approximately 20 pounds since arriving in Knoxville in January 2025, Brandon’s entrance stature is already nearly 15 pounds heavier with a similar height. That bulk is important in a physical SEC slate.

The true freshman missed a majority of his senior season in high school with a thumb injury, being limited to five games. He fully participated in spring practices after arriving on campus in January, concluding with an unofficial 6-for-16 statline for 36 yards in the spring game.

He carried the ball four times for 25 yards, but was sacked twice for a loss of 16 yards.

“I would say just taking it day by day, trying to learn as much as possible, take the coaching the right way,” Brandon said in March. “Whenever the coach is coaching somebody else, another quarterback, just listening to what he’s saying and just soaking (up) everything in it so I can make myself better.”

The coachability has left an impression on the rest of the coaching staff. Brandon, who turned 18 years old on June 1, has progressed quickly in a short period of time.

"For a true freshman getting here in January, seven weeks of offseason, what we did, and then hitting the ground in spring ball, through today, he's been really sound in what he's done — I think (in) the pass game, certainly," Heupel said after the team’s second spring scrimmage in April.

"There's a lot on our quarterbacks in the run game, too, and that's an area that, at times, can be the hardest part for our quarterbacks. But he's continued to progress in that.”

"There's still a lot left for him and everybody in that room for us to be what we need to,” Heupel said. “But, as a true freshman, certainly pleased with what he's done up until this point."

Though MacIntyre has a year of collegiate experience under his belt, Brandon’s sheer potential and tools land him a chance to earn the starting gig come September.

Tennessee’s lone quarterback with starting experience, Staub, comes as a transfer portal addition from Colorado. The three-year reserve has played in 12 career games, earning two starts.

In his true freshman season in 2023, Staub earned his first career start against Utah in the last game of the season. He completed 17-of24 passes for 195 yards, delivering his first career touchdown to Travis Hunter.

After redshirting his second year, Staub earned a second start in 2025.

Head coach Deion Sanders deployed Staub against Houston, going 19-for35 for 204 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Staub is 53-for-99 for 681 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions during his career.

In Tennessee’s spring game, Staub put forth the most impressive performance — though he faced the third-team defense for most of it. Staub delivered a 7-for-13 day for 130 yards and a touchdown. He launched a 72-yard score to a wide-open Carson Whitehead down the sideline on the first drive of the game.

“I mean, every day I’m still learning this offense just as they are,” Staub said in March. “I’m trying to grow and learn as much as I can every single day to be the best version that I can be of myself. Obviously, if I can help the room, if I can help the guys, that’s great, but I am here to compete. I’m here to be the best quarterback that I can be, and that’s my goal every day.”

Tennessee likely won’t decide a starter until game day creeps closer. The Vols did not announce Aguilar as their starter until Aug. 17, 2025, 13 days before the season opener.

When fall camp begins in late July, it will be another chance for the three-man battle to unfold, with one emerging as the starter by kickoff in September.

MACINTYRE

The early candidate to win the starting job is the only in-house candidate remaining from 2025.

MacIntyre hails from Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, Tennessee, where he garnered a four-star status from 247Sports.

MacIntyre’s first season with the Vols saw limited action behind Aguilar, who started all 13 games and passed for 3,565 yards.

That left the then-true freshman to appear in two games — ETSU and New Mexico State — as the team’s third-string quarterback to Jake Merklinger.

He finished the season 7-for-9 passing with 69 yards, leading one scoring drive against ETSU in September 2025 in his collegiate debut.

After the departure of Aguilar and Merklinger, MacIntyre stood as the only returnee. In the team’s spring game in April, he unofficially completed 15-of-22 passes for 122 yards and no scores while leading the first-team group.

“I feel a good bit more comfortable,” MacIntyre said. “I think a lot of that growth happened between practice one and practice 15, not necessarily between now and last year. Just a lot more comfortable and a lot more clear visions, operationally, getting in the playbook and once you have 15 days stacked on top of each other everything felt really clear.”

‘The heart of gameday’

Traditions to know before your first Tennessee football game ANNA REIFFER Contributor Aside from the athletics themselves, Tennessee sports culture is rooted in gameday traditions that bring unique energy to each game.

Vol Navy What started as a single boat quickly grew into Tennessee’s arguably most unique gameday traditions.

It all started in 1962, when former Voice of the Vols George Mooney boated down the Tennessee River to Neyland to skip the gameday traffic.

The rapid expansion of the fleet to 350 vessels prompted the City of Knoxville and the university to construct designated docking facilities at Volunteer Landing to accommodate the growing water traffic and “sailgating.”

Ranging from paddleboards to 100-foot yachts, “sailgating” typically begins on Friday nights, extending all the way up to kickoff on Saturday.

Vol Walk and March to the Stadium Thousands line the route stemming from the Torchbearer to Gate 21 of Neyland Stadium to witness the players and coaching staff walk toward their next trial.

The procession is led by select members of the Pride of the Southland Marching Band and the spirit squad, comprised of cheerleaders, the dance team and mascots. This event occurs exactly 2 hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, symbolizing the unofficial start of game day.

Following shortly after that is the full Pride of the Southland Marching Band, led by drum major Sydney Flenniken. A group 415 members strong, the Pride echoes the sounds of Rocky Top throughout the parade route, stopping at Pedestrian Bridge for their signature Salute to the Hill performance.

The Opening of the T Dubbed the “best entrance in college football” by ESPN sportscaster Kirk Herbstreit, the opening of the T is recognized by football fans around the country.

The Pride of the Southland marches toward the north endzone of Neyland Stadium, forming the Power T, while over 102,000 fans

roar.

With the first note of “Down the Field,” the T opens, and the team runs out, led by the live mascot, Smokey XII. Dark Mode The “Dark Mode” game debuted under controversial Vol football head coach Lane Kiffin in 2009 against South Carolina on Halloween.

The launch of black jerseys created an eerie atmosphere in Neyland Stadium, especially fitting for spooky season.

The Vols decidedly beat the Gamecocks 31-13 in the new threads, leading campus to buzz about the scene for months after.

Despite the success, the black uniforms didn’t see the field again until Josh Heupel assumed the head coaching position in 2021. Again facing the Gamecocks, the jerseys were paired with black pants and cleats to create a more cohesive look. In 2022, black helmets were added to complete the ensemble.

With the tradition becoming consistent, Tennessee athletics trademarked the term “Dark Mode” in October 2024. Following the trademark, Dark Mode games became a major marketing point for Tennessee, in apparel and entertainment alike.

Noah Halford, the assistant director of creative video for Tennessee football, earned a Mid-South Emmy for his “Venom” themed Dark Mode uniform reveal, cementing the theme’s place in college football.

Checker Neyland A relatively recent tradition, Checker Neyland began as a grassroots social media initiative in 2014 against Florida, when fans collaboratively turned Neyland Stadium into a large-scale checkerboard.

With alternating orange and white sections, the concept imitates the checkered end zones that have defined the field since the 1960s. Former Vol football head coach Butch Jones quickly endorsed the idea, and Tennessee athletics officially adopted it shortly thereafter.

The success of the modern theme has been added to other Tennessee sports, with men’s basketball adopting it in 2017, and baseball in 2021.

While the official date of this year’s Checker Neyland game is still

to be announced, it tends to occur during high-profile games. That means that the 2026 season could possibly see a checkerboard against LSU, Alabama or Texas.

Salute to Service Typically situated around Veterans Day in November, Vol football’s “Salute to Service” game is dedicated to the bravery of those who have served our country.

Active service members and student veterans lead the Vol Walk, and the Pride of the Southland Marching Band performs a dedicated halftime show full of patriotic music.

Designed in collaboration with the Tennessee National Guard, Vol football sports “Smokey Gray” uniforms, featuring steelgray color tones and detailed with military standard fonts.

Together, these traditions make up the culture of the Tennessee athletics scene, shaping the game day experience that unites fans across generations.

How Tennessee athletics fill the calendar year ANNA REIFFER Contributor

Commonly dubbed an “everything” school, Tennessee’s sports culture is year-round and integrated into every corner of campus.

With an abundance of sports in fall, winter and spring, there is always a sporting event to attend on campus.

Here’s the lowdown on the entertainment of each season.

Fall sports Football Under the bright lights of Neyland Stadium, Tennessee football kicks off the semester with excitement.

This fall, the Vols begin their season against the Furman Paladins on September 5.

Amid a three-man race for the starting quarterback role, the Vols are set to host many conference foes, including Alabama, Kentucky and LSU, among others. This fall is also going to be the first time since 1997 a Manning will touch the gridiron of Neyland, with Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns rolling into town September 26.

Volleyball Following a devastating season-ending loss against Utah State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, the Lady Vols return to Food City Center this fall with unfinished business.

The team lost 11 players -– over half the roster -– to the transfer portal and graduation, leaving them to rely on incoming transfers and high school recruits. With a strong veteran core of Caroline Kerr, Mackenzie Plante and Nia Hall, the Lady Vols are looking to make it back to the NCAA Tournament.

Soccer On the grass at Regal Stadium, the Lady Vols seek a comeback this fall after last year’s historic season.

The team achieved its first No. 1 national ranking on Sept. 9, 2025, after opening its season with seven consecutive shutouts.

recruiting class in the nation, while also signing SEC Freshman team selection and Florida transfer Kai Tsakiris.

Cross Country Along the banks of the Tennessee River, the Cherokee Farms Cross Country Course plays host to Vol cross country, featuring stars like Mary Nyaboke Ogwoka and Zouhair Redouane.

During the 2025 season, both Redouane and Nyaboke Ogwoka received SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 2, 2025, and later competed at the NCAA Championships in late November.

Men’s tennis In the fall, both the women’s and men’s tennis teams focus primarily on individual matches as they prepare for spring dual match campaigns.

Coming into fall 2025, the men’s team faced an inherent challenge, with only two returners on its roster.

Despite the significant turnover, the Vols found their way to the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in mid-October, with three players advancing to the Round of 32.

Women’s tennis Leyla Britez Risso paved the way for the Lady Vols’ fall slate, reaching the semifinals of the ITA Regionals in mid-October 2025.

In November, she reached the Round of 32 in the ITA South Sectionals.

Women’s Golf Tennessee women’s golf delivered a standout fall, highlighted by a team win at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Cherokee Country Club.

Freshman Madison Messimer and senior Manassanan Chotikabhukkana led the charge with top finishes, while the Lady Vols made history with three different individual medalists in one season.

The team also opened strong at the Cougar Classic, tying a program record with an 11-under round on the way to a runner-up finish.

Men’s Golf Tennessee men’s golf surged through fall 2025, highlighted by a season-opening win at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate and steady performances against top competition.

Strong individual efforts from

Lance S i m p s o n , Jackson Herrington and Reed Lotter fueled the Vols, setting the stage for a rise to the national Top-15 in the spring 2026 season.

Winter Sports Men’s basketball Under lifetime-contracted head coach Rick Barnes, Vol basketball advanced to their third consecutive Elite Eight appearance in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.

Despite losing several key players to the transfer portal, Barnes has beefed up the roster.

Several stars, including 3-point phenom Tyler Lundblade from Belmont, among others like Notre Dame transfer Jalen Haralson and Cal transfer Dai Dai Ames, the Vols have addressed scoring to supplement a defensive-minded system from the top.

Women’s basketball A hot start to the 2025-26 season turned into a disappointing ending, with the Lady Vols getting eliminat-

ed by NC State in the Round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament.

Following the devastating loss, every player on the Lady Vol roster entered the transfer portal, leaving head coach Kim Caldwell without a team. In return, the portal has come in strong for the Lady Vols with the addition of players from Liberty, Stanford and a handful from SEC programs as the team seeks to rebuild this winter.

Swim and dive This season, both the men’s and women’s swim and dive teams saw great success, both achieving fifthplace finishes in the NCAA Championships.

Individual honors for the women included Camille Spink and Desharne Bent-Ashmeil, SEC Swimmer and Diver of the year, respectively, along with Jillian Crooks, who took the SEC title in the 100-meter backstroke.

As for the men, Bennett Greene claimed the SEC Male Diver of the Year honor, also claiming the bronze medal for the 1-meter springboard in the NCAA Championships. Gui Caribe took home the silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle at the NCAA Championships, narrowly missing the national title.

Indoor track and field The UT indoor track and field teams closed out 2026 with momentum.

They capped off their season with a top-20 national finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships and a record number of athletes competing. Big moments included a fifth-place pole vault finish from Cade Gray and a blazing 4x400-meter relay that took third in the nation — one of the fastest times in school history.

Spring sports Baseball Tennessee baseball, a national-championship-winning program in 2024, assumed new reigns with Josh Elander for 2026.

Inconsistencies plagued the Vols during the season, but highs included a three-game sweep at No. 9 Mississippi State. It included the first 30-plus-win season for a Tennessee skipper in his inaugural season.

Softball Tennessee softball began the 2026 season with a program-best 25-0 start, surpassing a 2006 record. It was a season highlighted in the circle, with star performances by the trio of Sage Mardjetko, Karlyn Pickens and Erin Nuwer.

Following the Lady Vols’ 3-1 victory over South Carolina on April 2, senior pitching phenom Pickens received one of 17 golden tickets to the Athletes Unlimited Softball League. She became the No. 1 pick in the AUSL draft on May 4 by the Caroline Blaze.

Outdoor track and field Tennessee track and field is off to a fast start this outdoor season, ranking in the national top-15 programs following the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational.

On the track, Javonya Valcourt ran a 50.86 in the 400-meter, ranking fifth in the NCAA, while her teammate, Dana Wilson, set a new Tennessee freshman record in the women’s

100-meter with a time of 11.14.

In field events, Cedricka Williams set a school record of 60.57 meters in the discus throw, ranking No. 2 nationally, and Cade Gray claimed the pole vault title at the Tennessee Invitational, clearing 5.66 meters.

Men’s tennis Tennessee tennis wrapped up the 2026 season in a trench it’d like to avoid.

The Vols put together just one SEC win, while dropping the final seven matches of the year. Head coach Chris Woodruff will have to rally troops to put together a better result than the 10-18 record the Vols had in 2026.

Women’s tennis Alison Ojeda’s tennis program has become a postseason staple.

After a Final Four appearance in 2024, the Lady Vols returned to the Elite Eight in 2025. While the 2026 season ended in the Round of 32, Ojeda’s program continued to be a consistent presence on the court.

The Lady Vols just missed out on hosting an NCAA Regional, ranking in the national top-20, while earning key wins over ranked opponents like LSU and Texas during the season.

Rowing Throughout spring 2026, the Lady Vols have consistently been ranked among the top rowing programs in the country, with many boats being undefeated through their first few regattas.

During the Rocky Top Invite in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the Lady Vols swept all seven final rounds to take the team title.

Men’s golf Tennessee men’s golf had an upand-down season, but two of its individuals highlight the program.

Sophomore lefty Jackson Herrington competed in the 2026 Masters, representing UT on the sport’s biggest stage. He followed Lance Simpson, who competed in the 2025 U.S. Open — marking a pair of rostered golfers who have competed in a Major tournament in the past year.

Women’s golf Under the guidance of head coach Diana Cantu, the Lady Vols had a transformational year in 2026.

Women’s golf claimed its first-ever SEC Championship with a match-play win over eighth-ranked Auburn. Kyra Van Kan sank the championship-winning putt on the 17th hole.

Tennessee inks new apparel contract with Adidas, will depart Nike after 12-year partnership partnership

ALEX SARKIS Asst. Sports Editor Tennessee is returning to Adidas as its main apparel supplier, entering into a 10-year contract with the brand after extension negotiations between the university and Nike couldn’t reach an agreement.

Adidas and Tennessee will once again join forces, having previously engaged in a long-term agreement from 1995 through 2014 before the school switched to Nike. The new partnership will begin July 1, 2026.

“There is no denying the resurgence of Tennessee Athletics, powered by the greatest fan base in all of sports,” Tennessee Director of Athletics Danny White said in an announcement. “Our strong licensing numbers, impressive television ratings, and sold-out venues all reflect this. Adidas recognized our potential and responded with one of the best apparel deals in the history of college sports, prioritizing Vol Nation and the Tennessee brand.”

reluctance toward getting involved in the proceedings. The logo that graced the uniforms of Tennessee’s 1998 national championship football team and back-to-back women’s basketball title winners will look to prioritize student-athletes in the financial space. Every athlete will be exposed to Adidas’ NIL Ambassador Network, a program that allows each to pursue their own NIL benefits. The brand is already in the process of forging deals with various Tennessee athletes.

This aspect of the new partnership was one of the driving forces that brought the Vols back to the three stripes.

“Adidas is establishing a new standard for investment in NIL with this partnership that will sustain UT’s powerful athletics program as the university continues competing for championships for years to come,” Adidas Vice President of Sports Marketing Chris McGuire said in an announcement.

In terms of uniform and brand design, the influence is set to stay in the hands of Tennessee Creative. Adidas plans to collaborate with the university’s in-house design team when working towards the latest Vols’ looks.

“Adidas has assured us that the existing design

ethos of Tennessee Athletics is critically important to their ambitions for our brand,” Tennessee Deputy Athletics Director Alicia Longworth said in the announcement. “We see immense potential in leveraging Adidas’ legacy in culture and sport to further enhance the work of collegiate athletics’ most talented creative team.”

Tennessee will join Texas A&M and Texas Tech as the most recent institutions to make the jump to the German-based brand. The Aggies entered into a five-year contract worth $47 million back in 2022, while the Red Raiders locked up a decade-long deal with $50 million in total product allotment.

The current contract with Nike yields Tennessee $1.2 million in base compensation and $4.5 million in annual product allotment until the agreement expires on June 30, 2026. The adidas era will officially begin the following day with the start of the new athletics year.

“This partnership provides us with a significant advantage in the ever-evolving landscape of college sports,” White said. “We take pride in our fan base and the competitive edge they offer us.

We refuse to partner with someone who does not feel the same way.”
