Our thanks to you The 2018-2019 academic year was unique in the history of UTS. The start of the school year is always one of new beginnings, especially so this year as we celebrated the move to our temporary location with a heartwarming "Hello Humbert!" community event. From our new neighbourhood we watched as our historic home at 371 Bloor St. W. became a construction zone and we eagerly witnessed its progress.

Although this year was one of great change, the life of the school continued with the same passion for knowledge as always, embracing creative disruption and consistently making progress related to our strategic directions.

As our students continued to show us their insight, initiative, and compassion, the parents, alumni, volunteers, and members from the entire UTS community showed support for the school in an unprecedented way, bringing the Building the Future campaign to $52 Million at the time of the groundbreaking ceremony.

Sometimes campaigns slow down near the end, but thanks to your enthusiasm, Building the Future is running at full steam.

OUTSTANDING Thanks to the hard work and passion of our students, parents, staff, volunteers, and donors, UTS celebrated many incredible accomplishments last year.

Here are just a few of them:

Raymond, Andrew, and Jason were selected for Team Canada at the International Young Physicists’ Tournament in Poland.

UTS won the Reach for the Top provincial championship for the third time in a row.

Pau won bronze and silver medals and Sam won silver and gold medals at OFSAA Track and Field.

UTS placed first in the Ontario Envirothon for the sixth year.

UTS was named the national champion in both the Fryer and Galois Math competitions.

A group of UTS students travelled to Japan as part of the Kakehashi (“Bridge”) Project and presented their experience to Consul-General of Japan Takako Ito.

At the Regional ECOO Computer Programming Contest, the UTS all-girls team placed 1st overall and the other UTS teams placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

XXIV For the 24th consecutive year, UTS captured 1st place at the Ontario Classics Conference.

The Girls Senior Volleyball team won silver at OFSAA.

Howard and David became the 14th and 15th UTS students to be selected to represent Canada at the International Math Olympiad.

Max placed fourth and Andrei was named the 2019 World Champion at the World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships.

Anna was selected to join Team Canada at the European Girls Math Olympiad, which went on to earn two bronze medals and two honourable mentions.

The UTS Badminton teams won the SSAF Championship banner and were named the TDCAA League Champions.

Jerry was chosen to represent Canada at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Hungary.

UTS claimed the national History Bee and Bowl championship for the fourth time.

Eric placed second, and Raya and Maria placed first in their categories at the Toronto Universities’ French Contest.

The UTS team won the Ontario Justice Education Network City of Toronto Mock Trial Championship.

Dr. Harkison was recognized as the most influential instructor of Anoop Manjuranth ’15, who won the prestigious J.E. Wallace Sterling Award for Scholastic Achievement at Stanford University.

Three UTS students earned Best Lawyer awards at the Superior Court of Justice Experiential Mock Trial.

Jessica, Annaliese, and Oliver took first place in three different categories at the Ontario High School German Contest.

Eric and David were selected for Team Canada at the International Physics Olympiad.

Sophie and Julie earned Best Delegate and Zahra received an Honourable Mention at the Rysensteen Model UN in Copenhagen.

The UTS educational experience bridges disciplines, creating innovative connections through the six core competencies of Character, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Citizenship, Collaboration, and Communication. Technology integration facilitates teaching and learning throughout the school.

Equity and Inclusion

UTS is proud of its merit-based admissions process, outreach strategy, and established financial assistance. Equity and inclusion are guiding principles in programs and practices throughout the school and our community represents a diversity of ethnic, socio-economic, gender, and religious identities.

Empowerment

Our dedicated and qualified staff of three counsellors, a student success teacher, and a social worker, along with a strong focus on student wellness, provide full-student support and in-school mentorship. A dedicated full-time administrator oversees student support and innovation, and a vibrant alumni and school community helps forge mentoring relationships to give UTS students a boost in their next step after graduating.

other parent volunteers. We plan events, fund student clubs and activities, and conduct workshops throughout the school year, while providing a welcoming venue for UTS parents to meet and share their experience.

UTSPA helps enhance student life in many ways, from funding clubs and student activities like Girls in Tech Conference, Model UN, Debate, Classics, DECA, and Day of Pink, and hosting and supporting events like the Graduation Reception, Open House, Parent-Teacher Interviews, wellness treats for students, pet therapy sessions during exams, and breakfasts for new parents. We also know the importance of preparing our children for their futures after UTS, which we do through our involvement in the UTS Summer Experiential Program, which placed 49 students with 18 different hosts across many specializations.

We aim to empower parents too, and so bring innovating speakers who explore topics like the future of work and education and how to make our children “future ready” in an ever-changing landscape.

UTSPA was also proud to earmark $25,000 of its funds to support the transition to the “new school” and all parents look forward to the school’s move back to its historic 371 Bloor Street location for the 2021-22 school year.

Positioned for the Future The value of the UTS Foundation assets at June 30, 2019 was $49,420,196, down from $69,419,068 at June 30, 2018. The decline was actually good news though, as the Foundation transferred $31,784,792 to the school from the Building Fund as the Building Project ramped up into full gear, along with $1,357,152 for bursaries, scholarships and awards. This was partially offset by $14,907,273 in donations and bequests collected during the year. $40,574,467 (more than 82%) of the Foundation’s assets were held in short term investments at June 30, 2019, which fully covered the remaining amount in the Building Fund as well as the $30,000,000 debenture committed by the Foundation to the school. The remainder of the assets are primarily invested in Canadian, US, and global equities.

The Foundation has worked carefully over the last several years to manage our portfolio to meet the cash funding needs of the Building Project, while also continuing to earn meaningful investment returns and to position the Foundation to continue to fund bursaries, scholarships, and awards in the future as we have done in the past. With a prudent investment approach and the incredible support from the UTS community for the Building the Future campaign, we have been able to navigate these waters and are well positioned for the future.

I’d like to finish by thanking Bill Saunderson '52 for his 12 years of service as the founding chair of the Foundation board. I’m privileged to have taken over from Bill and know I will have the full support of the rest of the board and the school to ensure we can continue Bill’s fine stewardship.

GRADUATING CLASS BURSARY PROJECT Since 2007, parents of graduating students have celebrated their children's graduation from UTS by making a gift to the Grad Class Bursary Fund in honour of their children. The Grad Class Bursary is endowed with over $230,000 which provides approximately $10,000 annually in financial aid to current UTS students. This year, many of the gifts in honour of graduating students were directed to our area of greatest need, the Building Fund.

We thank our families for giving the gift of a UTS education through donations totaling almost $100,000!
