It is an exciting time at UTS, with the reaffirmation of our Affiliation Agreement with the University of Toronto, and the development of a Project Agreement for rebuilding the physical infrastructure of the school as part of the formal agreements. Our academic affiliation activities with the university continue to expand and provide fascinating opportunities for students and staff.

None of the above could have come to fruition without the commitment of our alumni, staff, students, donors, volunteers, and parents. Passion is what fuels the tremendous accomplishments we celebrate in this report. At UTS, our students enjoy the opportunity to pursue their passions and to develop their devotion to making meaningful contributions to the world. Our alumni recognize how UTS contributed to their own growth and are dedicated to ensuring a vibrant future for the school.

Our partnership with the University of Toronto helps to define our uniqueness as a school. WELCOME “This school helps bright minds unlock their true potential.”

December 15, 2015 marked the rebirth of UTS. After three years of negotiation, our new Affiliation Agreement and Project Agreement were unanimously passed by the University of Toronto’s Governing Council. The signing of these historic documents means UTS is able to stay in its current location, and renews our affiliation with the University of Toronto.

With this foundation in place it is time to solidify a framework for our upcoming capital campaign and realize a feasible financial plan to support this momentous undertaking. Early support has shown the strength of the culture of philanthropy here at UTS, a culture that I am happy to help foster. This is a time for all members of the the UTS community to step forward and strengthen UTS for its students — current, past, and future.

MAINTAINING A STRONG FOUNDATION I am happy to report that the value of the UTS Foundation (UTSF) as of May 31, 2016 was $44,687,701. When funds were transferred from the University of Toronto on September 12, 2007, to begin UTSF, the original value was $31,455,133.

Due to prudent investment management and generous gifts by UTS graduates and parents, UTSF has grown by more than $13 million, or 42% since its beginning in 2007, while making substantial annual payments to UTS for bursaries, scholarships, and prizes. This is good news.

Now that UTS is soon to embark on a construction project that will renew and enlarge the historic 371 Bloor Street West building, UTSF has agreed to make funds available to UTS for construction purposes. UTSF has already begun liquidating investments to have cash available when funds are required.

These funds will be repaid to UTSF over a reasonable time period from UTS fundraising activities. As well, UTS will pay a competitive interest rate to UTSF on funds made available for construction. These interest payments will allow UTSF to maintain its generous payments for bursaries, scholarships, and prizes.

UTSF is extrememly pleased to be able to support UTS as it embarks on a new and exciting project that will allow it to continue to provide to deserving students an education of which we are immensely proud.

This is my 18th year with UTS. This whole time my goal has been to ensure students have a rich academic experience combined with a ton of co-curricular opportunities that allow them to identify and develop their passion for something new. UTS is a great place that attracts great students, who bring their best in all they do.

Here are a few of the accomplishments from this year we are proud to celebrate!

UTS students came in first, third, fourth, fifth, seventh, eight, and ninth at the international business competition, ICDC.

Three UTS students have made the Canadian national debate team — the first time ever that three students from the same school have qualified for the team at the same time.

Three UTS students are off to the National Chemistry Olympiad Training Camp, which places them among the top 10 chemistry students in Canada.

UTS won gold and bronze medals at the Canadian Computing Olympiad, a competition open to the top 20 high school programmers in the country.

Gaudeamus de victoria UTS claimed first place overall at the Ontario Secondary School Classics Conference for the 21st consecutive year.

The UTS Kids’ Lit team won the national literature competition, and will be attending the International Finals in Auckland, New Zealand, this summer.

The UTS Bantam badminton team took home the TDCAA tournament trophy for the third season in a row.

Teacher Anand Mahadevan was recognized with the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Teacher Jennifer Pitt-Lainsbury received the Chemical Institute of Canada Beaumier Award for High School Teachers.

Six UTS teachers became EUREKA! fellows, embarking on advanced academic inquiry to contribute to developing best teaching practices.

UTS students won the Ontario Math Olympics for the fourth year in a row, and captured second place at the American Regional Mathematics League Tournament.

UTS students earned two first-places finishes and one third-place finish at the provincial Concours d’art oratoire, and a first-place finish at the national Concours d’art oratoire.

The UTS varsity girls soccer team competed at OFSAA and won bronze at the TDCAA championship.

The Ontario Sears Drama Festival awarded UTS students for their performance and direction of the original play How We Killed Ezra.

One UTS student secured first place with a perfect score at the national Michael Smith Science Challenge, and seventeen UTS students placed in the top 10% of all competitors.

Three UTS students were honoured at the German Consulate for their performance in the German Deutsches Sprachdiplom II proficiency exam.

UTS once again placed first among 263 schools in Canada at the National Biology Competition.

UTS claimed first place at the Provincial Envirothon Championship for the third year running, and will represent Ontario in the North American competition.

I LIKE THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY HERE “There’s so much kindness and support, even when things get tough.”

I remember first coming into this auditorium, and how all the older grades welcomed me in, even though they didn’t know me. The sense of community and closeness here is nothing like what I expected.

Even during the stressful times of the year, the school creates a sense of support for students.

We bond over the challenges of homework and exams. Already, I feel like UTS has helped me become more compassionate.

I’m discovering what kind of classes I like, too. There’s a lot more expected of me in the classroom than I thought there would be, but the teachers and other students are always willing to help. I know this is a place where I can build my skills.

When I think about my future here at UTS, I’m most looking forward to getting to meet new people. This school is a serious commitment — one I’m looking forward to.

FOR ME, IT IS THE GOOD UTS MEMORIES THAT STICK “The big difference was the students.”

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I entered UTS, but discovered that school could actually be fun. The school was a refuge for people who tolerated well each other’s eccentricities. Their high level of activity helped one to ratchet up one’s own game. Most importantly, they were really decent people and good to be around — something I appreciate more fully ex post when we meet at reunions.

Having done a stint of teaching myself, I have come to appreciate the teachers I had at UTS, who really knew how to stretch you. You walked out of their classes feeling good.

When my son Robert had the chance to go to UTS, he hit it off right away with his highenergy classmates. The school asks a lot of him, and he keeps at it day after day.

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO UTS THAN JUST ACADEMICS “This school helped me realize how much I’m capable of.”

UTS places a lot of pressure on students. Yet, nearing the end of my time here, I believe that it has been worth it.

By valuing a diverse notion of achievement, this school helps students find what they are most passionate about.

You’re not solely defined by your ability to perform academically, but rather by the multifaceted value you bring to the community through sports, extracurriculars, and connections you make with students and staff.

It’s incredible to think of the opportunities I’ve had here, from being co-captain of the Varsity girls’ soccer team, and exploring local sustainability with the Environmental Action Committee, to starting a baking company with my friend.

Last spring, when I asked the school about organizing a conference centered around youth in Indigenous relations, the response was overwhelmingly supportive. Getting to work alongside dedicated peers to bring this idea from its primal stages to completion was a profound experience.

It’s really important to me to feel that what I’m doing is meaningful, and UTS has given me many such opportunities. In every endeavour, I knew I could count on unwavering support from my peers, teachers, and staff.

I’m looking forward to moving to British Columbia next year to study life sciences, and to seeing where everything I’ve learned these past six years will take me.

I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING “When I think of my time here at UTS, I think of one word: discovery.”

When I first came to UTS, I didn’t know what I was looking for. But I soon discovered that no matter what you’re interested in, there is a class or extra-curricular activity for you, and students all around you to help you be your best.

This is where you can find your passion. That whole idea of finding what you’re interested in, and then setting a road map to get yourself there — that’s UTS. I first started learning about business and finance through an extra-curricular business competition.

The senior students involved really mentored me and helped me shape my interest into a passion, and now a possible future career.

When I was looking into undergraduate programs, those same senior students, now university students themselves, were still there for me. It was so easy for me to plan the next step in my future, because of that alumni network.

I’ll miss the closeness here. I have been encouraged to branch out, extend beyond my comfort zone, and reach higher heights, all because of this supportive community.

IT’S A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHALLENGE. “As a teacher you get to have an impact, and I’m excited to be a part of my students’ journey.”

Even after 10 years of teaching, I know I’m going to be surprised on a daily basis here at UTS. Every time I walk in to the classroom, I know someone will have a question that will push me to think differently, and there’s this excitement that we get to learn something new.

I’ve seen UTS students reach out to experts in other countries, and make those connections to better understand new concepts. If you’re willing to take risks, and fail from time to time, and willing to engage, then UTS is the community for you.

My students are supremely passionate about what they want to learn. They are very hardworking, incredibly creative, and bring lots of energy to the classroom. My job is to help focus their learning and provide support, but it’s the students who bring so much to the table.

It is a privilege to teach here, getting to watch the seeds of leadership germinate in my students that will later bloom in adulthood. Most of my joy is watching them figure things out for themselves and learning by making mistakes.

THESE STUDENTS GO OUT AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. “In a nutshell, our students are amazing.”

I’m here for the one-on-one support these students need, but more than that, I’m here to help build a sense of community.

That sense of understanding, support and trust creates an atmosphere where students feel safe, heard, and inspired to push their own boundaries. We need to help our kids learn how to best manage their stress and anxieties so that nothing stops them from reaching their full potential.

What I have observed during my three years at UTS is that our students are empathetic, compassionate, and interested in this world. That is seen through so many initiatives in school and beyond. One in particular is the annual International Day of Pink, which is a day where we all take a stand against bullying of the LGBTQ+ community, and bullying in general. While I brought this event here three years ago, it quickly became spearheaded by a student-driven group that grows each year.

Seeing our students take on the planning and implementation of this event makes it clear to all that our young people are the future change-makers of this world. The more we can foster that kind of inclusive community here at UTS, the more our students will feel empowered to action and the better this world will be.

I’m lucky that I get to teach physics, because I get to be the first person to show my students how bizarre the real world can be.

UTS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION “When I joined the UTS Alumni Association, I was excited to reconnect with the school that played such an important role in developing who I am.”

Over the past year, the UTS Alumni Association (UTSAA) has continued its efforts to improve its programming in order to be more relevant to as many alumni as possible by offering more varied and more frequent alumni events. The Association wants there to be something for everyone in the Association’s events offerings, which have included museum outings, movie nights, hockey tournaments, golf tournaments, the ever-popular trivia night and, of course, the highlight of the alumni calendar, the Annual Dinner. The Association has also sought to build on its reform efforts of the last several years, by launching a reenvisioned and re-invigorated Year Rep program that will see all classes have two Year Reps. Moreover, those Year Reps will

be equipped with the tools they need to be as effective as they can be in their roles.

The Association has also engaged in a thorough governance review in order to ensure that it adheres to best practices for a not-for-profit, membership-based organization. That review will begin to yield changes in some of the Association’s operations shortly. Finally, since today’s students are tomorrow’s alumni, the Association is working on leveraging technology to respond to the number one request of current students: connecting with alumni. The Association looks forward to deepening the connection between current students and alumni.

IT’S ABOUT FINDING BALANCE “I don’t need a reason to keep volunteering. It’s just right.

It’s what I had from my mentors, teachers, and colleagues and what UTS students today should have.”

I was able to attend UTS because of the bursary program. Every year I wrote a thank-you letter to the people whose generosity made my time here possible.

Fast-forward 22 years. I lived in Japan and Chicago, and finally moved back to Toronto just around the corner from UTS. That’s when I started giving back.

At first it was interviewing new students, supporting the bursary program, and getting more involved with the alumni community. Now I’m in my seventh year

volunteering with the Branching Out mentorship program, which connects senior students and alumni. Students can get very focused on grades, but the Branching Out mentorship program helps them build other skills and find an important balance.

That’s also one of the reasons I teach Taiko drumming to students after school. It helps them with their confidence and teamwork — ­ important skills to anyone’s success. I look forward to keeping my relationship with UTS and the students here for years to come.

BEING PART OF THIS CULTURE IS INSPIRING “This is a place where we showcase our students’ talents.”

There’s a lot going on in this building, both in the classroom and beyond.

Teachers and students take on a lot, and part of my job is to help them manage that.

My proudest moment this year has been getting to see the senior boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams finish strong. These are students I’ve coached since they were pretty much new to the school. From

that moment, I knew if they worked at it, they would succeed.

Our students are so engaged; it inspires me to do more and give back. With UTS being a merit-based school, all our students enter our school so talented. But when I see them take on something new, see how passionate they are about it — ­ that’s exciting for everyone.

UTS PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION “We are grateful to have this connection that enriches our lives so fully.”

The UTS Parents’ Association (UTSPA) is very proud to be a part of the UTS community.

Over the past year, we have enjoyed watching our students’ growth and development through their participation in various clubs and extracurricular activities funded by UTSPA. It’s been wonderful to sustain longstanding facets of the school like the Robotics Club, Debating Society, Classics Conference, and the school newspaper, and see newer additions to student life like the Let’s Talk Science Challenge, the Kids’ Lit Quiz and Brain Bee evolve into successful entities.

We have the enviable position of funding a multitude of student groups that energize our school with a spirit of incredible enthusiasm, dedication, and talent.

In addition, we have had meaningful involvement in important school events. Parents contribute their considerable time and resources to events such as the New Parent Reception, Graduation, Staff Appreciation, Curriculum Night and Open House. Through parent engagement, UTSPA’s bonds with staff and students are strengthened and a familial affection takes root.

Graduating Class Bursary Project Since 2007, parents of graduating students have celebrated their children’s graduation from UTS by making a gift to the Grad Class Bursary Fund in honour of their children. The Grad Class Bursary is endowed with nearly $170,000 which provides approximately $6,500 annually in financial aid to current UTS students.
