Thefirstpieceoftherecitalis“Perlagloria”fromBononcin’sGriselda.BononciniwasanItalian Baroquecomposerandcellist,whowasparticularlywellknownforhisoperas.Theoriginalwritingof thisrolewasforthecastrativoicetype,butisnowtypicallyperformedbyasopranoina“pantsrole”. Thetitle,translatesto“forthegloryofadoringyou”andinthisparticularsceneintheoperaErnestosings thisariaindedicationtohisbelovedAlmirena,anddetailshisdeeploveforhereveniftheycannotbe together,thatlovewillpersist.

Withoutahopeofpleasure Itisvainaffection tosigh, Yetyoursweetglances: Whocaneveradmirethem, No,andnotloveyou? Iwillsuffer, Iwillloveyou, dear,deareyes.

Thenextthreeselectionsaretheworkofabrotherandsister,FelixandFannyMendelssohn.Fannywas theolderofthetwo,butbothwerebroughtupwithaccesstoexceptionalmusiceducation.Bothalsowent ontobecomerenownedcomposersandtalentedperformers.Thefirstpieceentitled“Erwin”was composedbyFanny,publishedin1847,itwasalsoapointofcontentionforafemalemusiciantohave publishedworks,soherfamilydidhavesomeapprehensioninherpublications,butsheeventually publishedover450compositions,someevenpublishedunderthenameofherbrotherFelix.Shehada varietyofdifferentstylesunderherbeltincludingstringquartet,pianotrio,orchestraloverture,four cantatas,onehundredandtwentyfivepiecesforsolopiano,andovertwohundredandfiftylieder.Felix Mendelssohnisthecomposerof“Abendlied”and“Minnelied”.Felixwaswellknownforhisworkas pianist,conductorandcomposer.HewasanotablepersonofinterestintherevivalofBach’smusicafter hisconductingoftheSt.MatthewPassionin1829.Likehissisterhealsohadawidearrayofstylesunder hisbelt,andisnowconsideredtobeoneofthemostpopularcomposersoftheromanticera.

ThenextselectionofworksisasetofthreepiecesfromEnriqueGranados“12Tonadillasen EstiloAntiguo”publishedin1912-1915,andsettothetextsbyFernandoPeriquet.Granadoswas aSpanishcomposerfromCatalonia,andwasanaccomplishedpianist.Hewrotemanyworksfor pianoincludingthepianosuite“Goyescas”whichwentontobecomehismostfamouswork. Howeverthe12tonadillasareregardedasGranadosmostimportantvocalwork.Eachofthe12 piecesinthelargerworktellsastoryaboutlove,thecompositionalsotookinspirationfrom scenesintheroyaltapestriesofMadridbySpanishpainterFranciscodeGoya.

ThefirsttwopiecesoftheEnglishsetarecomposedbyFranzJoseph’sHaydn.Haydnwasan Austriancomposerbornin1732.Hewasoriginallynotanartsongcomposer,butwasinspired bytheworkofAnneHunterandwentontocomposethefirsttwocanzonettasfromhis“12 EnglishCanzonettas”toherpoetry.Thefirstpieceofthesetentitled“TheMermaid’ssong”was settothetextofAnneHunter,andservesasa”vocalaccompaniment”tothepiano.Thispiece isalsoparticularlyinterestingforitsuseofwordpainting.ThesecondpieceintheEnglishset entitled“PiercingEyes“,thetextofwhichwaswrittenbyananonymouspoet,isregardedasone ofHaydn’smostpopularartsongs!Haydnonlypublishedabout40artsongs,andwasmore popularlyknownforhisinstrumentalworksandevenoftenreferredtoasthe“Fatherof symphony”,howeverhisvocalworksareincrediblywellwrittenandarecharacterizedbytheir lightandmorecollaborativefeeloftheaccompaniment.

ThelastpieceoftheEnglishsetisbyHerbertBrewer,anEnglishcomposerfromGloucester. BrewerlivedinGloucesterfortheentiretyofhislife,andwasachoirboyatGloucester Cathedralwhereheeventuallybeganhisorganstudies.Hespentmostofhiscareercomposing churchmusicandhis“Magnificat”and“NuncDimittis”inDMajorareinthestandardrepertoire ofAnglicanChurchmusic.Hewasarelativelyconservativecomposer,butdidcomposesomeart songs,including“TheFairyPipers”whichisregardedashismostpopularone.Thispiecewas alsofamouslyrecordedbyClaraButt,andhasbecomeapopularpieceintheartsongrepertoire.
