SHOWCASING UTSA MUSIC

FRIENDS -

Welcome to the February issue of Cadenza, our ne for the Department of Music at UTSA Among the most important are focused on recruitment of new graduate. While we are a considered a large music accrediting association (NASM), we must be dilige high quality students that make our programs so successful. This takes a coordinated effort from faculty, staff, and students. One example of this effort is led by Dr. Si Millican, professor of music education, who heads up our faculty Recruiting Committee. This group organizes the procedures and publicity for our annual recruitment activities, and also coordinates the audition days where prospective students hope to win admission and possible scholarship support to attend UTSA At the same time, our music ensembles (choir, band, and orchestra) have been on the road this semester to visit schools and meet prospective students Our Spring 2018 tours put our UTSA students and faculty into direct contact with over 2,000 student musicians from Houston to San Antonio to the Rio Grande Valley. Also, associate music department chair, Dr. Stacey Davis, works with music staff in handling the complicated admission and scholarship paperwork necessary to get these students in the door once they are accepted.

All of these activities require the support of our music faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends. While we admit dozens of talented music majors each year, we also lose out on many interested prospective students due to lack of scholarship and graduate assistantship funding If you are able to help us with this ongoing effort, please make a donation today to the UTSA Friends of Music

Thank you, and best wishes for a wonderful spring,

Go ‘Runners!

WHAT IS PERCUSSION CAMP?

E R C U S S I O N C A M P

The UTSA Percussion Camp is a week-long “total percussion” experience for both middle and high school students graduating 6th-12th grade in a day camp format. Our goal is to immerse students in the exciting world of percussion, helping them develop their technique and musicality, improve their sightreading abilities, and learn about new styles of music and instruments through interactive masterclasses and ensemble experiences.

Each day, students will attend hands-on masterclasses with UTSA percussion faculty on the following topics:

Snare drum and marching percussion fundamentals

Timpani and ear training

Keyboard percussion techniques

Jazz percussion and drum set

World percussion (Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Trinidadian music)

Students will directly apply these skills in a wide variety of ensembles, including small chamber groups, large percussion ensembles, as well as jazz and world percussion ensembles Each of these groups will perform on the final concert on Friday, July 13 at 4pm.

Students should have at least one year of experience studying music to participate in the UTSA Percussion Camp (band, private lessons, or similar)

Faculty

Michael Mixtacki - director, world percussion, percussion ensembles

Sherry Rubins - assistant director, concert percussion, steel band, percussion ensembles

Joe Caploe - jazz vibraphone and drum set

Ben Pyles – marching percussion
