ConcertoNo.1inAminor forCelloandOrchestra,Op.33 CamilleSaint-Saëns

Consideredamodernistcomposer, whenSaint-Saënswrotehis Cello

ConcertoNo.1 in1872,hewasstilla polemicname;evenHectorBerlioz oncesaid“Saint-Saënsknows everything,butlacksinexperience.” Laterinhiscareerhebecameknownas areactionaryintheFrenchmusical circles,whichbythenwereexperiencing theemergenceofStravinsky’savantgardeballets.Withoutanexpected orchestralintroduction,The Cello ConcertoinAminor immediately launchesthesoloistintoactionina completedeparturefromthetraditional concertoform.Itsfirstmovement beginsasasonataallegro,however afteraslowdevelopmentsection,itis interruptedbythesuddenarrivalofthe secondmovement,an Allegrettocon moto inthestyleofaminuet.Muted stringsandthealmostcomplete absenceoflowregisterinstruments givesthismiddlesectionatypeof music-boxcharmthatcontrastswiththe energeticclosing Allegro.Withthis Concerto,Saint-Saënsmasterfully createdasinglemovementworkthat hastheeffectofthestandardfast-slowfastthree-movementcomposition.A successfromtheverybeginning,the Concertowaswell-receivedasitwas perceivedasbeingfreefromSaintSaëns’modernisttendencies.
