Giuseppe Verdi wrote Don Carlo on commission for Paris Opera where it premiered in French 1867. It is based on Schiller’s play Don Karlos and is in a style perfected at Paris Opera the five act tragedy with obligatory third act ballet. The plot is built around the historic betrothal of Don Carlo and Elisabeth de Valois. Their love affair is eventually dissolved when a treaty requires her to marry Don Carlo’s father, Phillip II of Spain. In this duet, “Dio, che nell'alma infondere", Carlo’s father has just married Elisabeth and Carlo is seeking comfort at a monastery. His best friend, Rodrigo, enters after a longjourney and learns of his friend’s sorrow. The two friends declare their undying friendship.
