DIVISION OF RECREATIONAL SPORTS

Divisional Overview 2012–13 For over 96 years, the Division of Recreational Sports has been a part of campus life. Nationally, the Division is recognized as one of the oldest and largest collegiate recreational sports programs in the country. What began as the Men’s Intramural Program expanded and evolved over decades to become one of the most popular programs on campus and an essential part of the Longhorn experience. Today, Recreational Sports features six distinct program areas – Intramural Sports, Fitness/Wellness, Sport Clubs, Instructional, Outdoor Recreation and Informal Recreation. Nine wide-ranging facilities offer over 500,000 square feet of indoor space and 40 acres of outdoor space.

The Division’s reach extends to students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, visitors and the general community who enjoy access to a comprehensive array of facilities, programs, services and special events. As testament to its popularity among students, 91 percent of the undergraduate population participates in RecSports and 96 percent say they would recommend RecSports to others. Overall, students and RecSports members accrue more than 3.6 million hours of participation annually while virtual visits to the RecSports website amount to one million each year.

As a unit of the Division of Student Affairs, RecSports supports and complements the University’s academic and public service objectives, assists in fulfilling its core purpose and values, and contributes significantly to the University’s disciplined culture of excellence. With these goals in mind, the Division partners with students, campus departments and agencies, as well as the general community, by hosting nearly 6,000 special events each year at RecSports facilities, including receptions, student orientations, meetings, dances, sports tournaments, college convocations, fundraisers and much more. In doing so, Recreational Sports provides environments that foster community building and creates opportunities that contribute to a personal sense of belonging. Meeting these objectives is essential to creating a sense of community among the diverse student population of more than 50,000 that inhabits the 350-acre main campus with 17 colleges and schools, and 24,000 faculty and staff.

As RecSports looks ahead to its 100th anniversary in 2016, it endeavors to continue to enrich the lives of students outside the classroom. It does so by promoting physical fitness, healthy habits and balanced behaviors, and by teaching meaningful life skills that cultivate involved and responsible citizens.

Highlights 2012–13 The Division of Recreational Sports had much to celebrate in its 96th year of providing programs and services to The University of Texas at Austin community. Along with opening a renovated outdoor facility, 91 percent of students participated in some aspect of the program. This all-time high participation rate contributed to the 3.6 million participation hours accrued and an increase in the number of facility reservations. RecSports reaffirmed its commitment to serving students and the University community by providing nine wide-ranging recreational facilities and six core programs, in addition to employing approximately 1,000 students in dozens of part-time positions. As a Student Affairs agency that serves the entire University community, RecSports continued to partner with various student organizations, collaborate with academic departments and campus agencies, and expand opportunities for fitness, service learning and special events.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES • Conducted an alternative spring break Service Learning trip to Grand Canyon National Park where students assisted in the removal of invasive species from the canyon. The trip was featured on the UT Web home page.

• Conducted five feed the homeless events in downtown Austin.

• Celebrated three sport club national championship teams: Rock Climbing (2nd consecutive), Quidditch and Men’s Powerlifting. The Tower was lit orange in honor of all three clubs on May 6, 2013.

• Increased the number of custom specialty fitness classes offered to Intercollegiate Athletics, residence halls and student organizations.

• Implemented a pilates reformer series in the new exercise studio on the lower level of Gregory Gym. • Successfully partnered with Student Government to offer “off season” basketball and flag football leagues. Both leagues filled to capacity and had waiting lists.

• Fall soccer team registrations totaled 259, resulting in the largest number in the history of the program.

• Offered a new “guard start” lifeguard training program for youth.

• Added a triathlon camp to summer youth camp offerings.

Service Learning

FACILITIES • Caven Lacrosse and Sports Center at Clark Field received a National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association’s Outstanding Facility Award.

• Initiated new expanded operating hours at Caven Lacrosse and Sports Center at Clark Field, Gregory Gym and the Recreational Sports Center.

• Completed the renovation of the Gregory Gym Climbing Wall.

• Completely renovated the Gregory Gym Main Weight Room with new equipment, flooring and control desk.

• Completed $2 million of infrastructure upgrades at the Recreational Sports Center including the replacement of air handlers, hot water heaters, a sound system and energy efficient lights in the gymnasium.

SUPPORT SYSTEMS • Outsourced a Web redesign project with a local Austin company and launched the new Web in mid-August.

• Accepted the Dewar Endowment focused on an intramural golf participant.

• Installed the third round of Gregory Gym pavers.

• Opened Victory at Gregory Gym, a retail space managed by Luke’s Locker via a management agreement with Nike. Offered monthly programs to highlight Victory as a resource for fitness.

• Implemented an academic collaboration between Victory and a textiles and apparel class in the School of Human Ecology for students to evaluate the layout and make suggested changes for merchandising and flow of traffic. Video-conferencing was used to allow the Nike team to “see” the student presentations.

• Upgraded to Filemaker Pro 12, enabling all databases to run faster and function at a higher rate.

• Began using Absolute Manage for remotely managing software throughout the Division.

• Implemented electronic scanning and filing of accounting payment documents. Improved efficiency and supported sustainability efforts by reducing copier and paper use.

• Implemented new online processes for the I-9 form and background checks for new staff.

• Recognized four staff members at the University Staff Service Awards event for their combined service totaling 90 years.

Campus Collaborations 2012–13 The Division is committed to collaborating with students and the University community as a means of fostering strong relationships and serving as a good citizen of the University. The Sport Club Program provides opportunities for students to participate in recreational and competitive non-varsity sports with an emphasis on leadership development.

Develop effective leaders through Sport Club representative positions.

Added Texas Quidditch as the 45th member of the Sport Club Program.

Outdoor Recreation Program 2012–13 PURPOSE

HIGHLIGHTS

Comprised of Adventure Trips, Wilderness Leadership, the Climbing Wall and the Outdoor Center, the Outdoor Recreation Program facilitates the development of character and leadership in students through participation in adventure experiences.

Teach students how to participate in wilderness recreation ethically and responsibly.

Renovated the Climbing Wall.

Replaced entire 5 and 6-person tent inventory with 25 new tents in the Outdoor Center.

Foster and encourage an appreciation of and a sense of responsibility to nature and the outdoors.

Over 90 percent of the outdoor recreation staff participated in the service learning program.

Serve as the leader in providing the campus community with service learning opportunities that incorporate recreation and community service.

Service Learning and Outreach 2012–13 HIGHLIGHTS Successfully conducted two (of four offered) service learning adventure trips combining for a total of 400 hours of volunteer service. The first was the Spring Lake Clean-Up that hosted six students who removed invasive water hyacinth from the federally protected aquatic habitat on Spring Lake (contributing 40 hours of service). The second was an alternative spring break trip with Grand Canyon National Park’s Invasive Vegetation Management Program to remove invasive tamarisk trees from the banks of Roaring Springs creek totaling 360 hours of service. This trip was a featured article on the main UT-Austin website and remains a featured story on the University’s Know website.

Hosted six service projects collaborating with the Horns Helping Horns Program, the Helping Hand Home for Children and the Orange Jackets.

Six of these events were outreach programs for the Helping Hand Home for Children including the rock climbing and tower tour, paddle boarding on Lady Bird Lake, caving at Whirlpool Cave, canoeing on Lady Bird Lake, and two pool parties held during the summer at the Gregory Gym Aquatic Complex.

Hosted four Feed the Homeless Initiatives in which 60 students volunteered to prepare food and donate clothing to the homeless population of Austin compiling over 300 hours of service work. This initiative provided over 1,200 breakfast tacos, 120 pairs of shoes, and 200 T-shirts to individuals staying at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH).

Instructional Program 2012–13 PURPOSE Comprised of Safety Education and Aquatic Classes, the Instructional Program provides the campus community with non-credit educational classes that teach the development and application of skills.

GOALS Provide affordable emergency response education and training programs to RecSports staff and the campus community.

Offer sports and recreation classes that provide opportunities for participants to learn and enhance skills.

HIGHLIGHTS Aquatic offerings were expanded to include private swim lessons, youth instruction, and intermediate courses focused on front/back crawl and breaststroke.

Increased the number of student staff certified as lifeguard instructors providing for additional lifeguard classes and certifications.
