Welcome to Utrecht Summer School I am delighted to present to you the programme of Utrecht Summer School 2015. This year, we will once again be offering, a variety of academic summer courses that differ in subject, level and duration, to students from all over the world.

We are proud to present various new and challenging courses.

For example, the number of courses offered in the field of Law and Economics has increased considerably. We are pleased that our excellent cooperation with the Hogeschool Utrecht (University of Applied Sciences) and with the HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht) is yet again reflected in a number of summer courses. This year we will be working together with a wide selection of partners throughout the Netherlands. Furthermore, we are extremely pleased with the outstanding collaboration with our international partners and the resulting courses not only in Utrecht, but also in several other cities all over the world. International students at Utrecht Summer School will certainly find themselves in good company. In 2014, around 3000 students came to Utrecht to participate in one or more of our courses. With over 110 nationalities working and studying closely together, students learn to work in an international environment from the start, which is essential for scientists in an increasingly globalised world.

Here we are at the start of the 29th edition of Utrecht Summer School! I am very excited for you to see what the summer school has to offer in 2015. Our course offer is tremendously varied and contains over 200 courses, in all of the university’s faculties and ranging from bachelor to PhD level. Whether you are a PhD student concerned with medicine, a bachelor student with a keen interest in art history, or a student looking to learn the Dutch language and culture; we have a course that suits your needs.

Our course offer also contains an international part. Our cooperation ties with university abroad have grown, we are currently working together with universities in Italy, Germany, Russia, China, Costa Rica and more. What better way to study business than to visit the food- and agribusiness on site in Northern Italy? You can study the Renaissance art in Florence and study the behavior of tropical bees than at the National University of Costa Rica. We are also introducing a new course about the last developments in the financial industry, which will partly take place at the International Banking Institute in St. Petersburg (Russia).

In a rapidly changing world, the Utrecht Summer School also aims at offering an up-to-date course programme, where important issues such as the Financial crisis or Leadership in Healthcare are thoroughly studied and discussed.

Of course, your summer school experience does not have to end after a course of one or two weeks. Consider combining a few courses to truly get a feel for your subject. You can find some of our most well known combinations in this brochure in the form of ‘special tracks’. These tracks not only allow you to easily apply for a combination of courses, they also generally result in a substantial discount. If you are looking to combine a different set of courses, go ahead and mix and match to create the ideal course package.

Utrecht Summer School is not solely about studying. We offer student housing, so that you do not have to worry about finding a place to stay. We also offer an extensive social programme, so that you will easily meet other students.

The Netherlands The Dutch combine history and traditional culture with innovation, modernism and an international orientation.

While Holland likes to emphasize its highly industrialized features, the Dutch have not let go of their background, often making use of the possibility to go for a quiet stroll along the historic canals that run through town.

Holland, or the Netherlands The Netherlands is a kingdom. Its official name is the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It consists of the Netherlands itself and Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, in the Caribbean Sea. The country’s name in Dutch is Nederland, meaning ‘low country’ and referring to the fact that much of the land is at or below sea level. The Netherlands (Nederland) therefore means ‘low country’.

Today the Netherlands is also called ’Holland‘, a name that is derived from the names of two western coastal provinces, North and South Holland. These provinces were the most developed and wealthiest parts of the country in the seventeenth century and they played a dominant role in the country’s history.

Geography Holland is situated in the west of Europe and borders Germany to the east, Belgium to the south and the North Sea to the north and west. This small country lies at the point where the German, British and French cultures meet. What strikes people most when they first arrive in Holland is the landscape: the country is extremely flat. While there are some hilly areas in the southeast corner of the country, even these barely infringe on the broad, unbroken expanse of sky that is so characteristic of the Dutch landscape. Moreover, water can be found everywhere, in the form of lakes, rivers, canals and the sea. The parts of the Netherlands below sea level would be flooded if there were no dikes, dunes and other fortifications. Holland’s relatively small area of slightly over 41,000 square kilometers. With 16.5 million inhabitants a population density of 499 people per km2, the Netherlands is the most densely populated country of the European Union.

Society Dutch society is made up of over 190 different nationalities living in its many cities and villages. For decades, the country’s historical ties with other parts of the world has brought people of non-Dutch origin to settle in Holland, which makes the Dutch generally openminded, freedom loving and tolerant towards foreigners.

This cultural diversity has made Holland a place where knowledge, ideas and cultures from all over the world 8

come together. Although Dutch is the national language, the majority of the population also speaks English and very often another foreign language, such as German or French.

Mentality The Netherlands is a ‘self-service country’. The Dutch try to manage most things themselves, which makes them very independent and organized. Another distinctive characteristic of the Dutch is their openness and direct manner of acting and speaking. You will notice that you can say exactly what is on your mind, as the Dutch are not easily offended. Dutch society is organized in a nonhierarchical way. For example, teachers tend to be very accessible and true interlocutors for their students. You will be on familiar terms with everybody in almost no time.

Utrecht The history of the city goes back to 47 AD when the Roman emperor Claudius ordered his general Corbulo to build a defensive line along the river Rhine, which was the northern most border of the empire. One of the strongholds (or Castella) along the river was built at a crossing in the river and was called Traiectum (which means crossing place). In the local language this became Trecht, Uut-Trecht (lower-Trecht) and later Utrecht. At the place where once the castellum stood now stands the Dom church built in the 13th century.

Nowadays, Utrecht is a lively city in the geographical

centre of the Netherlands. It is not only an important junction where traffic, trade, distribution and services meet and mingle, but also a true knowledge centre: apart from Utrecht University and the HU University of Applied Sciences, it houses important research institutes and several other institutes of higher education. With its 300,000 inhabitants, Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands and with no less than 70,000 of the inhabitants being students; Utrecht is a true student city.

Along the canals you will find a rare phenomenon, of which Utrecht citizens are extremely proud: the wharves.

These wharves, which provide direct access to cellars, were used for the loading and unloading of ships and the storage of goods in the Middle Ages. These days, they are mostly used as outdoor terraces for restaurants. Sitting by the water, you can enjoy a drink or a meal looking over the decorative lit canal.

Several canals crisscross the city and encircle the city centre. The Dom tower is the focal point and the pride of the city: with a height of 112 meters, it offers a magnificent view over the city. To the south of the Dom is the city’s museum quarter. There you will find a varied offering of excellent museums in a setting of picturesque courtyards, unexpected small restaurants and delightful little shops.

The Utrecht Summer School started in 1987, with one course: Dutch Culture and Society. In the last two decades, the summer school developed a broad selection of over 200 courses in virtually all disciplines Utrecht University, HU University of Applied Sciences and HKU University of the Arts have on offer. In 2014, Utrecht Summer School attracted almost 3000 students from over 110 different countries; as such it is the largest academic summer

school in Europe. The programme is characterised by strong, academic courses in a variety of subjects. For most of the courses ECTS credits are rewarded.

Utrecht Summer School aims to provide its participants with an unforgettable stay in Utrecht and the Netherlands. Therefore, parallel to the study programme, a social programme has been set up which includes excursions, sports, social gatherings and festivities.

Utrecht Summer School is a cooperation between Utrecht University, HU University of Applied Sciences and HKU University of the Arts.

Higher education in the Netherlands The education system in the Netherlands is known for its high quality in education and research and its international study environment. In addition, with 1,560 international study programmes and courses, it has the largest offer of continental Europe. The Netherlands has two main types of higher education. Research universities focus on the independent practice of research-oriented work in an academic or professional setting, while universities of applied sciences are more practicallyoriented, preparing students for specific careers.

Within the framework of Utrecht Summer School, Utrecht University, HU University of Applied Sciences and HKU University of the Arts Utrecht offer courses in a wide range of topics on various levels.

Utrecht University (UU) With about 30.000 students, Utrecht University is the largest and the most renowned university in the Netherlands. Utrecht University is a research university comprising of seven faculties which collectively span the entire academic spectrum in teaching and research.

Founded in 1636, the University is now a modern, leading institute enjoying a growing international reputation. In the prestigious Shanghai Academic Rankings of World Universities 201, Utrecht University ranks 1st in the Netherlands, 15th in Europe and 57th worldwide.

Utrecht University offers a broad range of 45 undergraduate and 169 graduate programmes, the latter including many English-taught programmes. There are 10

more than 30,000 students at Utrecht University and 7,500 members of staff. Every year, more than 2,000 international degree-seeking students and international researchers stay in Utrecht for variable periods of time.

Utrecht University is linked to the names of many prominent academics among whom are Buys Ballot, Donders, Rudolf Magnus, Van Unnik and Freudenthal.

The list also includes Nobel Prize Winners such as Gerard ‘t Hooft from the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy.

HU University of Applied Sciences (HU) Hogeschool Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (HU) was founded in 1995, the result of a merger of several independent institutions. The HU is the third largest university of applied sciences in the Netherlands. It has over 40,000 students (including 1200 international students) with more than one hundred different nationalities. The HU offers a wide range of courses spread out over nine principal themes. Most of the 80 programmes lead to a Bachelor’s degree, and some lead to a Master’s degree. Several programmes are taught in English.

All courses are geared towards the practical aspects of the disciplines and the teaching is competence based with the emphasis on professional skills and work placements.

HKU University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU) HKU University of the Arts Utrecht is the largest educational institution for arts, culture and media in the Netherlands, and one of the largest in Europe. Located in Utrecht, HKU has 4000 BA, MA and research students taking part in nine bachelor programmes and six master

programmes of which three in English validated by the UK Open University.

Utrecht Summer School not only offers you a fine selection of interesting courses in all kinds of disciplines, it also intends to give the participants an unforgettable stay. Therefore we invite all students during the months July and August to an attractive social programme, which includes excursions, sports, social gatherings and festivities.

Accommodation Utrecht Summer School offers temporary housing for Summer School students or in some cases in hotels. The student accommodations that are reserved for Summer School students are located throughout the city. All accommodations are situated within easily accessible distances from various educational institutions. The accommodations are in the University centre ‘the Uithof’, in the city centre of Utrecht or its suburbs.

All student rooms are fully furnished. Depending on the accommodation, apartments either include fully fitted kitchens, or offer a system of room & board. The rooms are single or double rooms with shared facilities. In your residence kitchen you can find everything you need to cook a nice meal.

Utrecht Summer School offers a wide range of summer courses abroad. We are currently working together with universities in China, Russia, Costa Rica, Estonia, Germany, Italy and more. Social programme

To give you an impression; last year’s programme contained excursions throughout the Netherlands, night canoeing through the canals downtown Utrecht, a cycling tour through the countryside around Utrecht, a pub quiz, and (guided) trips to famous museums. These activities will provide the perfect setting for you to meet international students from other summer school courses and to get to know your class mates better! A full overview of all activities in 2014 is available online. You can book your tickets online to ensure your place!

The Utrecht Summer School generally tries to house students from one course in the same accommodation.

Students from other courses might be housed together in the same building as well, which gives you the great opportunity to meet international students from other disciplines.

Additionally, a few courses will be taught by and at University College Roosevelt in the south-west province of Zeeland, by the sea. Also in Middelburg we provide student accommodation. More information about housing in Middelburg can be found on our website.

Booking a private room If you want to be sure that you will be staying in a private hotel room, or if you want to bring a friend or spouse with you to share your room with, we recommend you to book a room in a hotel in Utrecht. We selected a few hotels for you, situated in the city center and where you can book a single or double room at special rates for students

Tour de France In the summer of 2015, the biggest and most famous biking event in the world will start in Utrecht: the Tour de France. The kickoff will be on Saturday 4 July with

Sports card The University sports centre Olympos offers a special membership card during the summer. For only € 14,50 (duration of 1 month), participants of the Utrecht Summer school can make unlimited use of sport and courses facilities.

Sportcentrum Olympos boasts top-class facilities: there are 4 squash courts and a well-equipped fitness centre.

Outdoor facilities include nine all-weather tennis courts.

The Olympos Sports Bar (Sportcafé Olympos) offers a varied menu of food and beverages at very reasonable prices. Visit one of the parties or watch an exciting sports event on the big-screen TV.

Courses Whether you are a bachelor or master student, a PhD candidate or a professional: the summer school offers a course on your level. In this brochure, the exact level is indicated for each course. The length of the courses varies from one week up to six weeks. You can make your own combination of courses that meet your personal requirements. For every discipline we suggest some “special tracks”, course combinations that proved to be successful during earlier editions.

Discount on online courses of Elevate Health As a student of Utrecht Summer School, you’ll receive a 30% discount on all courses of Elevate Health, the online academy founded by Utrecht University and University Medical Center Utrecht. Housing discount If you combine two successive courses (including housing), you will get a € 60 discount. For every extra course you take, you will get an additional discount of € 60. This discount will be automatically processed in your account.

Combination discount Of course it is possible to combine successive courses.

Sometimes, combining courses will get you a special discount off of the total course fee. Please see the course descriptions on our website for detailed information. A number of general bachelor courses offer this discount.

an individual time-trial of 13.7 kilometers. The starting signal of the second stage will also be given in Utrecht on Sunday July 5th. This day the peloton will ride through the streets of our historical city toward Zeeland (a province in the south- east of the Netherlands).

Does your course start on Monday 6 July? Then you are very lucky, because you can join the Grand Départ! We give you the opportunity to arrive already on Friday July 3rd. Due to the time trail, it is not possible to arrive on Saturday July 4th. If you cannot arrive on Friday, we advise you to pick up your key on Sunday July 5th. More details about the exact timetables will be published on our website.

International combinations Thanks to our international partners, you can even plan a truly international experience by combining a summer course in Utrecht with a course elsewhere in Europe.

Give your summer an international touch by combining “European Politics” in Utrecht with a course on European integration in Tartu, Estonia. Or expand your knowledge on european art by following the special track “History of Art: European Highlights” which takes place in Florence, Utrecht and Berlin. Utrecht Summer School takes care of the transfer between the different locations! In this brochure we present various international programmes.

Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Discover Europe’s roots in this two-weeks course that takes you to the ‘Eternal City’: Rome, Italy. During this course you will make a voyage from Antiquity to the later Middle Ages, highlighting its politics, religious affairs and societal developments. See how these developments are also expressed in magnificent artistic accomplishments on its way.

Once the capital of the glorious Roman Empire; then rival to the Florentine Renaissance; birthplace of the Baroque and location of the Vatican, beautiful Rome is in various ways the ancestor of modern Europe. We will be studying Rome´s and Europe´s history from inside and outside the classroom, since many of its iconic places exist still nowadays. We will visit the tangible remains of the Roman era and discover the beautiful (early) churches which were transformed in later times by geniuses like Michelangelo and Bernini and unravel the politics behind these sights and works of art. You will certainly ´experience´ history this way!

Taking the beautiful city of Utrecht as a starting point, this course will take you on a journey that illuminates the rise of modern Europe from the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century. We will take the medieval city of Utrecht as a starting point to discuss the history of Europe and explore important political, religious and cultural themes during our lectures and various excursions.

This course takes you to some of the most crucial Dutch landmarks of the making of Europe like the Utrecht Cathedral, the wharfs and wealthy canal houses - still testifying to the incredible economic success of Europe in the Golden Age - , whilst the public parks and patrician houses attest to the rising bourgeoisie in the 19th century. Several historical museums in Utrecht, but also the cities of Amsterdam and The Hague are on the agenda, ensuring that you will be able to really ‘experience’ history during these two weeks!

The Making of Europe: The Long 20th Century Freie Universität Berlin (FUBiS) This course will be taught in the thrilling city of Berlin, focusing on the making of Europe from a 20th century perspective. You will not only explore the background and history of the World Wars and the era leading up to it, but you will also be introduced to the Interbellum, the Cold War, and the relations of Europe with Russia and the USA. Ever wondered what makes Europeans ‘European’?

During this course you will uncover the answers, discovering not only Europe’s cultural pluralism, but also its varied identities that still exist today; despite the fact that the majority of the European countries are progressively collaborating on an economic and political level. Each of Europe’s countries and peoples still carry their own distinctive cultures, languages, political views, religions, and traditions. During the two weeks in Utrecht you will engage with topics such as the emergence and construction of national identities, national identity versus European identity, the cultural heritage of Europe, and the processes of globalization and transnational collaboration. In light of these last topics we will organize a field trip to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts and the European Parliament in Brussels.

During the 20th century, Europe not just experienced one, but three horrific wars: the First and Second World War and the Cold War that followed in their wake.

Oftentimes, the first half of the 20th century has been labelled “The Era of Violence”, and perhaps rightly so.

But this century might as well be regarded as an age of rebuilding, transatlantic collaboration, and global connections, thus making the 20th century much more diverse than one might assume. This course offers you an introduction to the history behind the political landscape of Europe. Central in our focus is the European Union (EU), a political partnership between 28 democratic European countries with almost 500 million citizens, that has become a major player in global politics and economy. You will gain insight into the history of the European Union from the 1950’s, the collaboration between the partnering countries, current political and economic issues in Europe, and learn about EU’s institutional structures and their current aims and future challenges. During lectures you will further your knowledge on the political and human geography underlying Europe’s politics, and discuss the workings of the European Union, the process of integration and EU’s transatlantic relations.

To make this all more tangible, a fieldtrip is included in which you will visit the European parliament under expert guidance.

The Age of Anne Frank: Holocaust and Genocide in Modern Europe Faculty of Humanities (UU)

Anne Frank, the teenager who was forced to go into hiding in war-time Amsterdam, probably more than anyone else gave a face to the six million victims of the Holocaust. Her diary became one of the canonical texts of the twentieth century, and it is still felt to address the universal drama of persecution and human dignity. Anne Frank was exceptional, although, sadly, no exception. This course will explore the figure of Anne Frank and unravel the psychological, sociological, historical and legal dimensions of genocide in modern Europe. What were the motives of the perpetrators?

How did European societies deal with the genocidal practices of the twentieth century? Students will get to know the world renowned figure of Anne Frank more in-depth and explore the many questions around the holocaust and genocide, and their long-term effects on society. You will be taken on a number of excursions, for example to the Anne Frank House and the Jewish quarter in Amsterdam, and the International Criminal Court and the Peace Palace in The Hague.

This course deals with the effects of European Competition Law on the behavior of businesses in the European Union (EU). An effective common market within the EU requires a fair and undistorted competition. Hence the European Commission (EC) vigorously attacks cartels. A recent example is the ‘cooperation’ between 7 seven international groups of companies – Chungwa, LG Electronics, Philips, Samsung SDI, Panasonic, Toshiba, MTPD (currently a Panasonic subsidiary) and Technicolor (formerly Thomson) – which fixed prices, shared markets, allocated customers between themselves and restricted their output. In this case the European Commission imposed a total fine of € 1.47 billion in 2012.

Colony development of the honeybee can safely be inspected by the students. Survey Research: Design, Implementation and Data Processing Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (UU) Changes in technology and society strongly influence modern survey research. This course covers the essentials of modern survey methodology and analysis and is organized by the Department of Methodology and Statistics in collaboration with Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Topics include state of the art survey design, questionnaire construction and testing, modes of data collection, including online surveys and mixed mode design, data processing- and survey analysis techniques, as scale and index construction and the use of administrative data. Survey Research: Statistical Analysis and Estimation Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (UU) The course is based on a total survey error perspective and discusses the major sources of survey error.

Participants will be presented with tools for detection and adjustment of such errors. Analysis methods are introduced using both SPSS and R. Topics include complex sampling, nonresponse adjustment, measurement error, analysis of incomplete data and advanced use of administrative data. Special attention will be given to the analysis of complex surveys that include weighting, stratification and design effects. This course is organized by the Department of Methodology and Statistics (UU) in collaboration with Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

R is rapidly becoming the standard platform for data analysis, and is able to perform an enormous range of statistical procedures not available in other statistical programs, such as SPSS. This course offers an elaborate introduction into statistical programming in R. Students learn to operate R, make high quality graphics, fit, assess and interpret a variety of statistical models and do basic statistical programming. The statistical programming in this course covers plotting, regression models for linear, dichotomous, ordinal and multivariate data, multilevel data, repeated measures, and basic bootstrapping and Monte Carlo simulation techniques.

In addition, students will follow one of three more specialized programs that focus on 1) sustainable food production, 2) healthy food in an urbanized world or 3) next generation food-related behavior.
