Welcome to Utrecht Summer School I am delighted to present to you the programme of Utrecht Summer School 2011. This year, once again, we will be offering students from all over the world a variety of academic summer courses that differ in subject, level and duration. We are proud to present various new and challenging courses in our offer. For example, the number of courses offered in the field of medical and veterinary sciences has increased considerably. We are pleased that our excellent cooperation with the Hogeschool Utrecht (University of Applied Sciences) is yet again reflected in a number of summer courses. This year we will again be working together with a wide selection of partners throughout the Netherlands. Furthermore, we are extremely pleased with the outstanding collaboration with our international partners and the resulting courses in not only Utrecht, but several other European cities as well. International students at Utrecht Summer School will certainly find themselves in good company. In 2011, over two thousand international students have come to Utrecht to participate in one or more of our courses. With some 80 nationalities working and studying closely together, students learn to work in an international environment from the start - essential for scientists in an increasingly globalised world. Here we are, after the lustrum last year, at the start of another 25 years of Utrecht Summer School! I am very excited for you to see what the summer school has to offer in 2012. Our course offer is tremendously varied, with courses in all of the universityâ€™s faculties and ranging from bachelor to PhD level. Whether you are a PhD student concerned with medicine, a bachelor student with a keen interest in art history, or an international, looking to learn the Dutch language; we have a course that suits your needs. Our course offer also contains an international part; what better way to study business than to go the textile industry in Northern Italy? What better way to study Renaissance art than to go to the Uffizi in Florence? Of course, your summer school experience does not have to end after a course of one or two weeks. Consider combining a few courses to truly get a feel of your subject. You can find some of our most well known combinations in this brochure in the form of â€˜special tracksâ€™. These tracks not only allow you to easily apply for a combination of courses, they also generally result in a substantial discount. If you are looking to combine a different set of courses, go ahead and combine to create the ideal course package. Utrecht Summer School is not solely about studying. We offer student housing, so that you do not have to worry about finding a place to stay. We also offer an extensive social programme, so that you will easily meet other students. This mix of a varied and academically challenging course offer with student housing and an extensive social programme ultimately results in a very exciting summer. Holland The Dutch combine history and traditional culture with innovation, modernism and an international orientation. While Holland likes to emphasize its highly industrialized features, the Dutch have not let go of their background, often making use of the possibility to go for a quiet stroll along the historic canals that run through town. Holland, or the Netherlands The Netherlands is a kingdom. Its official name is the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It consists of the Netherlands itself and Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, in the Caribbean Sea. The country’s name in Dutch is Nederland, meaning ‘low country’ and referring to the fact that much of the land is at or below sea level. Today the Netherlands is also called ’Holland‘, a name that is derived from the names of two western coastal provinces, North and South Holland. These provinces were the

most developed and wealthiest parts of the country in the seventeenth century and they played a dominant role in the country’s history. Geography Holland is situated in the west of Europe and borders Germany to the east, Belgium to the south and the North Sea to the north and west. This small country lies at the point where the German, British and French cultures meet. What strikes people most when they first arrive in Holland is the landscape: the country is extremely flat. While there are some hilly areas in the southeast corner of the country, even these barely infringe on the broad, unbroken expanse of sky that is so characteristic of the Dutch landscape. Moreover, water can be found everywhere, in the form of lakes, rivers, canals and the sea. Holland’s relatively small area of slightly over 41,000 square kilometres is home to over 16 million people.

Society Dutch society is home to over 190 different nationalities living in its many cities and villages. For decades, the country’s historical ties with other parts of the world have brought people of non-Dutch origin to settle in Holland, which makes the Dutch generally openminded, freedom loving and tolerant towards foreigners. This cultural diversity has made Holland a place where knowledge, ideas and cultures from all over the world come together. Although Dutch is the national language, the majority of the population also speaks English and very often another foreign language, such as German or French. Mentality The Netherlands is a ‘self-service country’. The Dutch try to manage most things themselves, which makes them very independent and organized. Another distinctive characteristic of the Dutch is their openness and direct manner of

acting and speaking. You will notice that you can say exactly what is on your mind, as the Dutch are not easily offended. Dutch society is organized in a non-hierarchical way. For example, teachers tend to be very accessible and true interlocutors for their students. You will be on familiar terms with everybody in almost no time.

Utrecht City The history of the city goes back to 47 AD when the Roman emperor Claudius ordered his general Corbulo to build a defensive line along the river Rhine, which was the northern most border of the empire. One of the strongholds (or Castella) along the river was built at a crossing in the river and was called Traiectum (which means crossing place). In the local language this became Trecht, UutTrecht (lower-Trecht) and later Utrecht. At the place where once the castellum stood now stands the Dom church built in the 13th century.

Nowadays, Utrecht is a lively city in the geographical centre of the Netherlands. It is not only an important junction where traffic, trade, distribution and services meet and mingle, but also a true knowledge centre: apart from Utrecht University and the HU University of Applied Sciences, it houses important research institutes and several other institutes of higher education. With its 300,000 inhabitants, Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands and with no less than 70,000 of the inhabitants being students, Utrecht is a true student city. Several canals crisscross the city and encircle the city centre. The Dom tower is the focal point of the city: with a height of 112 meters, it offers a magnificent view over the city. To the south of the Dom is the cityâ€™s museum quarter. There you will find a varied offering of excellent museums in a setting of picturesque courtyards, unexpected

small restaurants and delightful little shops. Along the canals you will find a rare phenomenon, of which Utrecht citizens are extremely proud: the wharves. These wharves, which provide direct access to cellars, were used for the loading and unloading of ships and the storage of goods in the Middle Ages. These days, they are mostly used as outdoor terraces for restaurants. Sitting by the water, you can enjoy a drink or a meal looking over the decoratively lit canal. In terms of culture, Utrecht is a real festival city, with festivals like the Spring Dance Festival, the Holland Early Music Festival, The Holland Animation Festival and the Dutch Film Festival. When not hosting a festival, Utrecht is the stage for â€˜Cultural Sundaysâ€™ - cultural events inspired by a location, theme or particular art form.

The Utrecht Summer School started in 1987, with one course: Dutch Culture and Society. In the last two-and-a-half decades, the summer school developed a broad selection of over 130 courses in virtually all disciplines Utrecht University and the HU University of Applied Sciences have on offer. In 2011, Utrecht Summer School attracted over 2000 students from over 80 different countries; as such it is the largest academic summer school in Europe. The programme is characterised by strong, academic courses in a variety of subjects. For most of the courses ECTS credits are rewarded.

Founded in 1636, the University is now a modern, leading institute enjoying a growing international reputation. In the prestigious Shanghai Academic Rankings of World Universities 2011, Utrecht University ranks 1st in the Netherlands, 12th in Europe and 48th worldwide.

HU University of Applied Sciences (HU) Hogeschool Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (HU) was founded in 1995, the result of a merger of several independent institutions. The HU is the third largest university of applied sciences in the Netherlands. It has over 38,000

Sports card The university sports centre Olympos offers a special membership card during the summer. For only € 17,50 participants of the Utrecht Summer School can make unlimited use of the tennis, squash, fitness and beach volleyball facilities in the months of July and August. Olympos Sports Centre boasts topclass facilities: it offers 4 squash courts and a well-equipped fitness centre. Outdoor facilities include two beach volleyball courts and nine all-weather tennis courts. The Olympos Sports Bar offers a varied menu of food and beverages at very reasonable prices. Students can also visit one of the parties or watch an exciting sports event on the big-screen TV.

Accommodation Utrecht Summer School offers temporary housing for Summer School students. The student

accommodations that are reserved for Summer School students are located throughout the city. All accommodation is situated within easily accessible distances from various educational institutions. They are in the University Centre the Uithof, in the city centre of Utrecht or its suburbs. All rooms are fully furnished and decorated, and include crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, cleaning materials and bedding. The rooms are either single or double rooms with shared facilities. In your residence kitchen you can find everything you need to cook a nice (Dutch?) meal. Summer School generally tries to house students from one course in the same accommodation. Students from other courses might be housed together in the same building as well, which gives you the great opportunity to meet

international students from other disciplines.

Courses Whether you are a bachelor or master student, a PhD candidate or a professional: the summer school offers a course on your level. In this brochure, the exact level is indicated for each course. The length of the courses varies from one week up to six weeks. You can make your own combination of courses that meet your personal requirements. How about a four week summer programme by combining ‘European Business Skills’ and one of our Management Games? Or you could opt for a 4 week combination of ‘European politics and economy’ and ‘Contemporary and International Conflict Management’. For every theme we suggest some ‘special tracks’, course combinations that proved to be successful during earlier editions.

This course offers an introduction to Europe, a continent of great diversity. Each of its countries and peoples carry their own cultures, religions, traditions and languages, yet the majority of them are now engaged in a joint project aimed at political and economic integration in the European Union. This course aims to introduce you to the main challenges and opportunities of this project. Students will analyse topics such as the emergence and construction of national identity and culture; processes of globalisation and internationalisation and their effects on local cultures; and different national approaches to social issues.

This course will examine how the Holocaust and other genocides affected European society. Which political, economic and social circumstances led to these crimes against humanity in modern Europe? How can we explain the recurrence of war-related violence in a globalized society? How did European societies deal with the genocidal practices of the twentieth century? Students will explore the many questions around the holocaust, genocide, and their long-term effects on society during lectures and seminar groups. The course will also include a number of excursions to the Anne Frank House and the Jewish quarter of Amsterdam, and to the site of the Westerbork concentration camp.

Tuscany and the Low Countries: Artistic Relations (1450-1650) The Dutch University Institute for Art History in Florence In fifteenth century Italy, Netherlandish paintings became prized collector items among wealthy Italian bankers and merchants who went to the Low Countries for business. They were struck by the extraordinary degree of realism northern painting exhibited thanks to use of oil painting. This course offers a unique opportunity to understand why Netherlandish painting made such an impression on Italian collectors and painters and to what extent Italian Renaissance painting was influenced by it. Topics that will be covered are: The Medici and early Netherlandish art (patronage); the impact of Netherlandish painting on painting in Italy, especially in Florence.

History of Art: Relations between Italy and the Netherlands SPECIAL TRACK

But in the 16th and 17th centuries, the ‘Northern’ style of painting was seen as very different from the ‘Southern’ one. Nevertheless, the way these modules are integrated into a working system has been novel as well as recent. Micro & Macro Variation in Language Faculty of Humanities (UU) In this course, linguistic variation across human languages is studied from two comparative perspectives. In the first part of the course students are introduced to the field of macro variation, the systematic study of the similarities and differences between the world’s more than 5000 natural languages. The second part of the course focuses on the study of micro variation – the study of language systems that are very similar, such as closely related languages, or dialects of the same language. We will look at micro variation from a syntactic point of view, and discuss the relevance of phenomena such as syntactic dialect variation for linguistic theory.

In this course, students will be taught the basics of the theoretical framework evolved from and based on Chomsky (1981). One of Chomsky’s main innovations was to give linguistics the formal tools to study language. The formal tools of generative linguistics enabled linguists to explore the complexity of sentence structure and sentence meaning. The theory accounts for the creativity of human language; the characteristic that makes human language unlike the communication system of any other animal. Topics covered will include phrase structure, complementation, case and theta-theory, and movement.

This crash course is meant as a basic introduction to statistical treatment of experimental data. Attention will be given to description of data and to basic ideas such as sampling, chance levels and hypothesis testing. Furthermore, the question of how to design an experiment that might prove/disprove your theory will be discussed. The programme is rather ambitious, so students should prepare the assigned chapters before coming to class. In class, the material will be discussed and we will go into some of the exercises. Migrants are increasingly seen as key agents in facilitating development transferring economic, social and cultural capital from destination countries to those of origin. However, it is still necessary to unpack some of the issues and to ask: Who are the migrants? What kind of development? Where does, can and should development take place? This course introduces students to key concepts and empirical research on global migration, mobilities and development.

This course aims to enhance your understanding of violent conflict and conflict management. The course deals with the recent cases of Gaza, the DRC and Sri Lanka as illustrative examples, but also refers to other conflicts around the world. You will learn to map and analyse contemporary conflict, and be introduced to theories that attempt to explain armed conflict. What are the challenges for a sustainable future? How can innovation address these challenges? How to understand innovation processes in energy and water management? How to manage such innovation processes? What can we learn from experiences in the Netherlands? These are the main questions that will be addressed in this course at the Department of Innovation and Environmental Science. We focus on Dutch practices of innovation and governance to work on a sustainable future. Examples are (alternative) energy and water management technologies in order to protect the Lowlands against a rising sea level and other consequences of climate change.

On the one hand, cities are economic engines and centres of innovation and culture. They attract people to live, work and study. They are where new ideas emerge, where capital accumulates and where trends in culture, lifestyle and entertainment begin. On the other hand, major cities also have concentrations of poverty, social problems, unemployment as well as pollution, congestion and issues of affordability. While the benefits of urban life are plentiful, these challenges continue to grow. Introduction to Structural Equation Modeling using Mplus Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (UU) If you need to analyze your data in Mplus or if you want to know when to switch to Mplus, this introduction course is for you. The main objective of the course is to learn how to analyze several models with Mplus (e.g., path models, multiple group models, cross-lagged models, CFA, EFA, growth models, introduction to Bayesian models). No previous knowledge of Mplus is assumed, but prior knowledge of SEM, however not mandatory, will make this course more useful. On each day, the morning session consists of lectures, and the afternoon session of a computer lab where everyone can practice working with Mplus.

If you already know how to analyze your data in Mplus and want to learn more about the black-box of the program or if you want to know more about complex models, this course is for you. The course includes lectures on ‘the real SEM formulas’ (you do not need to know matrix algebra, calculus, or likelihood theory), parameterization in multiple group modeling, power in SEM, advanced introduction in Bayesian estimation, dealing with missing data, longitudinal designs and mixture modeling (latent class analysis, latent transition analysis, latent growth mixture modeling). Lectures are combined with computer labs where the topics of the lectures are applied on example data.

Currently, there are several methods to look at the mind/brain in action. Techniques like EEG/ERP, fMRI and recording eye-movements are widely used to address different kinds of scientific questions. For the social sciences, these techniques were initially almost exclusively used by experimental psychologists. Currently, however, social scientists with diverse backgrounds are becoming interested in the potential of these techniques for their research interests as well. More and more researchers use, or want to use, Mplus to analyze their structural equation models or multilevel models. We are honored that Prof. Muthén and Dr. Asparouhov will visit our university. In a threeday workshop new features are highlighted (e.g., multilevel/SEM with 3 levels, new Bayes features, causal effect estimation). Lectures are combined with computer labs where everyone can practice working with Mplus v7 (at least basic working knowledge of Mplus is assumed). On the third day there is also some room for individual consultations with Mplus experts. After these three days, the fourth ‘Dutch Mplus user group’ will take place where we learn about new developments and discuss solutions for typical Mplus problems.

Social research often involves problems that investigate the relationship between individual and society. The general concept is that individual persons are influenced by the social groups or contexts to which they belong, and that the properties of those groups are in turn influenced by the individuals who make up that group. Generally, the individuals and the social groups are conceptualized as a hierarchical system of individuals and groups, with individuals and groups defined at separate levels of this system. The appropriate analysis technique for such a hierarchical system is multilevel analysis. In this course the benefits of multilevel analysis are discussed. Some teachers find it difficult to deal with the changing classroom population. Although there is a growing recognition that teachers need to be trained to become equipped to teach effectively in inclusive schools, less attention is paid to the influence of attitudes toward inclusive education. This course focuses on future teachers’ attitudes towards the inclusion of children with SEN.

This course offers you a challenging introduction to conflict resolution and mediation skills. Most studies and professions require a vast amount of cooperation. In their cooperation, people frequently differ from opinion and hold different priorities. Although conflicts occur frequently, it is common for people to ignore them. At the same time, conflicts also offer a chance for unexpected possibilities. In this way, conflicts can also be great learning experiences. The aim of this course is to familiarize you with the backgrounds of human conflict behaviour and to develop and practice conflict resolution and mediation skills.

Geographical information experts deal with a wide variety of spatial information issues. In this course, students will have to combine soil, land use, topography and geomorphology data into one single map in order to indicate potential erosion areas. The course is a hands on course on GIS using ESRI ArcGIS (ArcInfo) and ERDAS IMAGINE. A wide variety of spatial data is used: digital vector and raster maps, aerial photography and satellite imagery.

Typed functional programming languages allow for the development of robust, concise programmes in a short amount of time. The key advantages are higherorder functions as an abstraction mechanism, and an advanced type system for safety and reusability. This course introduces Haskell, a state-of-the-art functional programming language, together with some of its theoretical background, such as typed lambda calculi, referential transparency, Damas-Milner type inference, and functional design patterns. We will quickly move on to applications of functional programming, concentrating on topics such as language processing, building graphical user interfaces, networking, databases, and programming for the web.

The Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Spinoza Institute in Utrecht rank among the leading institutions in the world in the field of theoretical physics. The course in Theoretical Physics offers a blend of advanced undergraduate material in thermal and statistical physics, quantum mechanics and electrodynamics. A computer project is also part of the coursework. In addition, there is a lecture series by Utrecht researchers on current topics in various fields of theoretical physics ranging from condensed matter to high-energy physics and quantum gravity.

The circulation in the atmosphere and in the oceans is at the heart of the climate machine. Geophysical fluid dynamics, dealing with the properties of flow in a rotating system, forms the core of the summer school. A systematic treatment will be presented, and numerous exercises will help to master the material. Furthermore, there will be a series of lectures on more specialised topics like chemical cycles in the climate system and their interaction with radiation, glaciers and climate change, coastal processes, etc. Students will participate in small research projects on these topics and will report on the results.

Poisson 2012: Summer school and conference on Poisson Geometry Faculty of Science Poisson 2012 is the 8th event of a series of biennial meetings on Poisson geometry and related topics. Poisson Geometry lies on the cross road of Mathematical Physics and Geometry. The objective of the course is to provide the student with insight in the principles and important issues of environmental and occupational epidemiology. Topics that are covered include time series analyses, assessment of dose-response relationships, use of geographic information systems in exposure assessment, retrospective cohort studies, ecological studies, (correction for) measurement error in exposure and interpretation of studies on mortality (life expectancy versus body counts). Theory will be illustrated by current and emerging topics like climate change and electromagnetic fields.

This course focuses on the chemical principles underlying protein structure and function and how proteins form an assembly of ‘molecular machines’ that work together to sustain the living state. We will explore how proteins ‘know’ what shape they should fold up into following their synthesis, how they cluster into dynamic macromolecular complexes, and how these complexes communicate to form ‘social’ networks that enable cells to move, replicate, signal, and execute other vital processes. The students will be introduced to advanced methods in structural and molecular biology for decoding the cellular protein machinery at atomic resolution, and examine how malfunction of specific components can lead to systemic failure and disease.

Molecular Mechanisms in Cancer

This course focuses on the translation of basic research knowledge and developments into clinical practice in the UMC Utrecht Cancer Center. For this purpose various departments from the University Medical Center Utrecht and Utrecht University will introduce their lines of cancer research and the recent developments in detection and treatment of cancer. Both molecular and technical developments will be discussed. The course will focus on requirements for successful clinical and translational oncology, like multidisciplinary collaboration, taking into account the central position of the patient.

This course focuses on the molecular mechanisms that turn a normal cell into a cancer cell. We will explore the regulation of cell cycle progression, the control of transcription regulation and the signaling networks that enable cells to execute vital processes such as growth, division and migration, and how malfunctioning of these processes may lead to tumour formation and metastasis. The students will be introduced to state-of-the-art methods in molecular cancer research and strategies for developing drugs to halt the formation of tumours.

Tick identification and molecular recognition of pathogens in ticks are key elements in disease outbreak investigations and field surveys. In this intensive practical laboratory course of 2 weeks students perform PCR combined with Reverse Line Blot (RLB) hybridization. RLB is a robust technique, wherein up to 40 different tick-borne pathogens can be detected simultaneously. This technique allows for the discovery of novel pathogens. BioBusiness Faculty of Medicine (UU) in collaboration with AMC Knowledge of the business field and the current market is important for all researchers in the rapidly growing Life Sciences area, but especially for those who consider starting or just started a career in industry. This international summer school is set up for PhD, postdocs and MSc students with a background in Life Sciences to support their career (orientation) in industry and to increase their understanding of business aspects of life sciences.
