Our Partners

Welcome to Utrecht Summer School I am delighted to present to you the Utrecht Summer School programme for 2018. This year, we will once again be offering a great variety of academic summer courses, to students from all over the world. Besides the courses that have proven to be popular over the years, new courses have been added to our programme. We are pleased that our excellent cooperation with the Hogeschool Utrecht (University of Applied Sciences) and with the HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht) is yet again reflected in a number of summer courses. This year, we will be working together with a wide selection of partners throughout the Netherlands. Furthermore, we are extremely pleased with the outstanding collaboration with our international partners and the resulting courses not only in Utrecht, but also in several other cities around the world. International students at Utrecht Summer School will certainly find themselves in good company. In 2018, around 4000 students came to Utrecht to participate in one or more of our courses. With over 125 nationalities working and studying closely together, students learn to work in an international environment from the start, which is essential for scientists and professionals in an increasingly globalized world. I hope you will enjoy reading this brochure, which is bound to contain something to your liking. I look forward to seeing you in Utrecht this summer.

Prof. Dr. G.J. van der Zwaan Rector Magnificus of Utrecht University

With great pleasure I present to you our summer programme of 2018. Thirty-one years ago, in 1987, we started with just one course on Dutch culture. Today we have over two hundred courses in all of the university’s faculties, ranging from bachelor to PhD level. Whether you are a PhD student concerned with medicine, a bachelor student with a keen interest in business, or a student looking to learn the Dutch language and culture; we have a course that suits your needs. Some of our courses contain international components. We work together with Universities in Italy, Germany, Russia and Estonia, with whom we offer unique programmes in art history, culture, history, and business. The Utrecht Summer School ambition is to offer an up-to-date course programme where important economic, social, cultural and political issues are thoroughly studied and discussed. Our courses deal with important contemporary subjects such as the Financial Crisis, Future Food, European Politics, Game Research, Future Deltas, Neuroscience and many other more. Many of the courses we offer are two weeks in length. Of course you are invited to combine courses to extend your experience and stay in Utrecht. Go ahead and mix and match to create the ideal course package for you. You can find our well-known combinations in this brochure in the form of ‘special tracks’. These tracks not only allow you to easily apply for a combination of courses, they also result in a substantial discount. This mix of a varied and academically challenging course offer, together with student housing and an extensive social programme ultimately results in a very exciting summer. Take your time and look through this brochure to find the course that will take you to Utrecht Summer School in 2018. Through our website you can apply and find more information on each course, our social programme and our housing options. Go ahead and have a look at www.utrechtsummerschool.nl.

The Netherlands The Dutch combine history and traditional culture with innovation, modernism and an international orientation. While the Dutch like to emphasize their country’s highly industrialised features, they have not let go of their background. They treasure the many historical buildings and monuments which can be found in the centre of the major Dutch cities, including Utrecht.

4

The Netherlands or Holland? The Netherlands is a kingdom. Its official name is the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It consists of the Netherlands together with the Caribbean islands: Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten. The country’s name in Dutch is Nederland, meaning ‘low country’ and refers to the fact that much of the land is at or below sea level. Today the Netherlands is also called Holland, a name that is derived from the names of two western coastal provinces, North and South Holland. These provinces were the most developed and wealthiest parts of the country in the 17th century and they played a dominant role in the country’s history.

Geography The Netherlands is situated in the west of Europe and borders on Germany to the east, Belgium to the south and the North Sea to the north and west. This small country lies at the point where the German, British and French cultures meet. What strikes people most when they first arrive in the Netherlands is the landscape: the country is extremely flat. While there are some hilly areas in the southeast corner of the country, these barely infringe on the broad, unbroken expanse of sky that is so characteristic of the Dutch landscape. Moreover, water can be found everywhere; in the form of lakes, rivers, canals and of course the sea.

The parts of the Netherlands below sea level would be flooded if there were no dikes, dunes and other fortifications. The Netherlands has a relatively small land area of slightly over 41,5 thousand square kilometres. With over 17 million inhabitants and a population density of 502 people per km2, the Netherlands is the one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

UTRECHT

Society Dutch society is made up of over 190 different nationalities living in its many cities and villages. For decades, the country’s historical ties with other parts of the world have brought people of non-Dutch origin to settle in Holland, which has given the Dutch the reputation of being generally open-minded, freedom-loving and tolerant towards foreigners. This cultural diversity has made Holland a place where knowledge, ideas and cultures from all over the world come together. Although Dutch is the national language, the majority of the population also speaks English and very often another foreign language, such as German or French.

Utrecht The history of the city goes back to 47 AD when the Roman emperor Claudius ordered his general Corbulo to build a defensive line along the river Rhine, which was the northern most border of the empire. One of the strongholds (or castellum) along the river was built at a crossing in the river and was called Traiectum (which means crossing place). In the local language this became Trecht, UutTrecht (lower-Trecht) and later Utrecht. At the place where once the castellum stood now stands the Dom Church built in the 13th century.

With no less than 70,000 of the inhabitants being students, Utrecht is truly a student city. Several canals crisscross the city and encircle the city centre. The Dom Tower is the focal point and the pride of the city: with a height of 112 meters, it offers a magnificent view over the city. To the south of the Dom is the city’s Museum Quarter. There you will find a varied offering of excellent museums in a setting of picturesque courtyards, unexpected small restaurants and delightful little shops.

Nowadays, Utrecht is a lively city in the geographical centre of the Netherlands. It is not only an important junction where traffic, trade, distribution and services meet and mingle, but is also a true knowledge centre. In addition to the Utrecht University, the HU University of Applied Sciences and the HKU University of the Arts, the city is also home to important research institutes and several other institutions of higher education. With its 350,000 inhabitants, Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands.

Along the canals there is a rare phenomenon, of which Utrecht citizens are extremely proud: the wharves. These wharves, which provide direct access to cellars, were used for the loading and unloading of ships and for the storage of goods in the Middle Ages. These days, they are mostly used as outdoor terraces for restaurants and bars. Sitting by the water, you can enjoy a drink or a meal looking over the decorative lit canal.

Utrecht Summer School The Utrecht Summer School started in 1987 with one course: Dutch Culture and Society. Accommodation Utrecht Summer School offers housing for its students. Usually students are accommodated in student residences, but in rare cases in hotels. The student residences are composed of single rooms (in rare cases double rooms), located throughout the city. All accommodations are situated within easily accessible distances from the various educational institutions. Some are located in the University campus ‘De Uithof’, and some in the city centre of Utrecht or its suburbs. All student rooms in the student housing are fully furnished. Depending on the accommodation, apartments include fully fitted kitchens. The rooms are single rooms (or in rare cases double rooms) with shared facilities of kitchen, toilet and bathroom. In the kitchen students can find everything they need to cook a nice meal. The Utrecht Summer School generally tries to house students enrolled from one course in the same accommodation. However, students enrolled in different courses might also be housed together in the same building. This gives you the great opportunity to meet international students from other disciplines. Additionally, a few Summer School courses will be conducted and taught at University College Roosevelt in the southwest province of Zeeland, in the city Middelburg. Also there, student accommodations are provided. More information about housing in Middelburg can be found on our website.

European Cultures and Identities

European Politics and Economy

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

Central to the course is the European Union (EU). This political partnership between 28 democratic European countries with almost 500 million citizens has become a major player in global politics. Students will be introduced to the history, institutional structures, current aims, and future challenges of the European Union. Lectures will discuss the historical background of the European Union and the various stages of integration. Other issues are the role of European leaders, the future political expansion of the EU, transatlantic relations, and the development of a shared foreign policy and development aid.

Have you ever wondered what makes Europeans ‘European’? During this course you will uncover the answers while staying in the beautiful medieval city of Utrecht. You will not only uncover Europe’s cultural pluralism, but also its varied identities that still exist today; despite the fact that the majority of the European countries are progressively collaborating on an economic and political level. Each of Europe’s countries and peoples still carry their own distinctive cultures, languages, political views, religions, and traditions. This course offers an introduction to Europe, a continent of great diversity.

The 20th Century: Europe in Three Wars

Introduction to Intercultural Communication

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

When asked about the twentieth century, most people’s first association are either Hitler or the Second World War. But during the twentieth century, Europe not just experienced one, but three horrific wars: the First and Second World War, and the Cold War that followed in their wake. Oftentimes, the first half of the 20th century has therefore been labelled “The Era of Violence”, and perhaps rightly so. But this century might as well be regarded as an age of rebuilding, transatlantic collaboration, and global connections, thus making the twentieth century much more diverse.

This course gives an introduction on basic theories regarding intercultural communication. These theories will be linked to different contexts, ranging from education and business, to migration and media. Drawing from different exercises and assignments throughout the course, we will finally focus on enhancing your own intercultural awareness and applying the theories to personal experiences with linguistic diversity and cultural otherness.

Project Management, From Theory to Practice

Entrepreneurial Finance and Going Public

Economics and Management (HU)

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

Many changes in today’s competitive environment are managed as projects; unique efforts that require dealing with budgeting, deadlines, working with multi-disciplinary teams, personal strengths and weaknesses - all challenges a project manager needs to deal with. This course prepares you for this by combining a theoretical background with a practical approach to project management. You will learn about leading project management methods, work on project simulations in teams, and experience different factors that determine the successful completion of a project. Part of the course assessment is the PRINCE2® Foundation Exam, and you will be able to earn the official certificate.

The course is meant for students and practitioners with great interest in learning how start-ups and entrepreneurial firms attract funding through crowdfunding and forms of private equity (business angels, venture capital). We analyze how firms can bridge the moment between burning cash and becoming profitable (financial planning). Finally, we analyze how founders and early investors can exit the new venture through an initial public offering (IPO). We discuss why and how entrepreneurial firms go public. We analyze the entire transition process through which a private company becomes public by offering part of its equity to public shareholders. New Financing Models in a Changing World Economics and Management (HU) The course consists of two parts, of which the 2nd part will take you to St. Petersburg (Russia). Since the credit crisis in 2008, banks are focused on improving their image and balance sheets. The standards for providing loans have been raised so far that SMEs hardly can fund new investments. Also startups have difficulties in raising funds. This trend will continue and therefore small and medium sized companies are sourcing their funds in alternative ways. We also see other financial institutions starting innovations. In short the financial world is changing and new models of financing will conquer the world. Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice

Economics and Management (HU))

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

In a rapidly changing business environment, matters like user-experience and customer journey are of growing economic importance. Companies often struggle with these concepts, as it requires a completely different approach to designing products and services. Enter Design Thinking; a creative, holistic, multidisciplinary approach based on strong fundamentals where co-creation takes central stage. During this course, we will aim to change the way you look at the world; more opportunity oriented and less problem-focused.

The world changes and we need to redevelop what is made, how it is made, where to sell and how to distribute; all while taking into consideration the consequences for the world around us. Some entrepreneurial people start their own business, but we also need people who seek opportunities for improvement inside larger organizations in business, government, education, and health care. Entrepreneurship is all about creating value, not only in terms of financial returns, but also about improving social and environmental aspects.

Supply Chain performance in a globalized economy requires new approaches to maintain and improve a firm´s competitive edge for long term success. Part of this success can be achieved by aligning sourcing decisions and activities with supply chain partners. This supply chain alignment refers to collaborative demand forecasting, capacity and production planning, inventory management, logistics and pricing decisions. In order to join this course a minimum of working knowledge of MS Excel is needed.

More and more, companies are looking for people who not only understand their own academic discipline but also have a basic understanding of business and entrepreneurship. Strange? Not at all! Technology and Design (HU)

This course will provide both theoretical background and hands-on experience on Blockchain applications. It is important for organizations to continuously anticipate on technology developments that disrupt or impact their businesses. Blockchain technology enables organizations to develop their business models and processes in a revolutionary way.

Prototyping is an important part of product development. A prototype gives the developers and the client the actual feel of a product. The road to a prototype is usually one of discussing, planning, drawing and finally prototyping. When the prototype malfunctions or has imperfections time and money is spent without result. With Agile Prototyping we take you through a short-cyclic trial-and- error make process to get from idea to a fully functional prototype in a shorter time with less costs and less risks. Process Mining Information and Communication Technology (HU) Process mining is a data analytics technique to discover, evaluate or enhance business processes by analysing the data traces left behind during the execution of these processes. It provides insights based on the data captured in the process-supporting IT systems. Oceans are essential for maintaining life on earth. Their resources are increasingly important to the world economy; 90% of international trade is seaborne. The current regime for the oceans is built on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (UNCLOS). This framework convention divides the oceans in coastal state maritime zones and international areas. In all these areas the legal regime seeks to maintain a balance between the rights, interests and obligations of individual states and the international community’s interests. In this course, an intro is provided to the law that regulates the oceans. Prof. dr. Financial Law and Economics: the (Next) Financial Crisis and Europe

Corporate Governance after the Financial Crisis: a history repeating itself?

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

The financial crisis of 2008 shook up the world and was coined as the worst financial crisis since the 1930’s Great Depression. Only a year later, the European Sovereign Debt Crisis destabilized the financial market as it came out that the debts of some countries, like Greece, exceeded their GDP. Are these crises really over? Or is the next crisis just only one step away? By way of lectures, participation in workshops and writing a paper, participants obtain insight in these issues while formulating solutions for a more sustainable financial system.

Failing Corporate governance of financial institutions has often been mentioned as an important cause of the crisis. Consequently, having a deeper understanding how corporate boards are formed and how they act have become a topic of increasing importance. Do you want to know how corporations are directed and how we can make them perform better? This course will provide you with the answers! On top of that, we will visit the Euronext Amsterdam, the Dutch Stock Exchange, where you can practice your skills as a trader.

Many executives say they use M&A as a means to consolidate or expand the market position of their firm or increase its production efficiency. Most mergers and acquisitions, however, fail to create value, leading to the so-called ‘merger paradox’. By adopting a multidisciplinary and institutional perspective, this course aims to increase the understanding of merger determinants and effects, discusses key topics for value creation, and concludes with policy assessments. In addition, the participants will work on their negotiation skills during a workshop.

Health Law & Economics: The Necessity for Efficient Compliance

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

Why is healthcare compliance necessary or desirable? At a global scale, it may be suggested that it is. Notable examples, like the $1.7 billion Medicare fraud in the Columbia/HCA case, suggest that poor compliance may lead to significant monetary losses. Worldwide, other scandals reached the news, not only pertaining to fraud but also to other issues, like privacy and safety breaches, drug prices, and over-prescription of medication and services. This course gives insight into (the causes of) these problems – including the economic issues of an inefficient health care marketplace – and the preventative function of a good compliance plan.

n SPECIAL TRACKn Corporations and Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) provide excellent case studies for Law & Economics. This special track deals with these two subjects. This is a very suitable course for students who are keen to appreciate an international, non-mainstream, multidisciplinary and interactive approach to Corporate Governance and M&A. Prof. dr. Wilco J. International Human Rights Law: An Introduction

International Law from a Gender Perspective

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (UU)

Interested in learning about human rights? This oneweek introduction course focuses on the major features of international human rights law. It begins by examining the philosophical and political bases of human rights and then explores human rights documents and mechanisms for the promotion and protection of human rights at the international and regional levels. Human rights- based approaches for analyzing conflict and attempts to promote peace and justice will also be explored. Through lectures, interactive working groups, expert panels and excursion(s), participants will gain an understanding of the various elements – and their interplay – involved in this field.

Justice is to be done regardless of money, race, etc., but also regardless of gender. However, the law, including international law, is not a perfect system, and just like the people who made it, it is biased. This interactive, one-week course will look at law from a gender perspective, encompassing cis, gay, trans and intersex perspectives. The focus is primarily on human rights but will cut across other areas of international law, such as refugee law. Through lectures, excursion(s), and group assignments, topical issues will be explored and analysed, linking together theory and practice.

Bilingualism – Uil OTS

Evolution of Language

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

Ask someone their opinion on bilingualism and you're likely to hear statements such as: learning two languages from birth confuses children and impairs their cognitive development', 'Bilingual children can't speak either of their two languages properly' or 'You can only become bilingual if you start acquiring your second language as a young child.' Though common currency among the general public, each of these statements is in fact a myth. In this course, you will discover why this is the case as we review some of the most important findings from the research on bilingual children.

Humans have ‘language’, animals do not. In this course we investigate on the basis of what evidence we can make such a claim. What exactly is language? Can we can say that animals do not have a faculty for language? Does language development in humans differ fundamentally from that in other animals, like in chimps? When we compare the development in songbirds and humans, do we find surprising parallels, like the learning of complex patterns of vocalization? Central to this course will be the comparative perspective from evolutionary biology on language.

Introduction to Generative Syntax – Uil OTS

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

Faculty of Humanities (UU)

This course starts from the introduction of young children acquiring their native language (L1). Then it explores the acquisition of a second language (L2) after their childhood. Major issues, such as critical period, in L2 acquisition will be discussed. The course covers the development of phonemes, syllable structures, stress, intonation and words both in Li and L2. The acquisition of a variety of languages will be presented. During this course, students will learn how to analyze L1 and L2 data from literature and corpora.

In this course, students will be introduced to the basics of the theoretical framework evolved from and based on Chomsky (1981). One of Chomsky's main innovations was to give linguistics the formal tools to study language. The formal tools of generative linguistics enabled linguists to explore the complex system underlying sentence structure and sentence meaning. The theory accounts for the creativity of human language, the characteristic that makes it unlike the communication system of any other animal. Topics covered will include the major concepts used to analyze linguistic phenomena, such as phrase structure, movement, binding, and logical form.
