All the Places I’ve Never Been, 2004, acrylic, charcoal and gesso on canvas, 184 x 210cm

Introduction It is a defining moment in any artist’s career to have an important survey of their work. This exhibition, curated so perceptively by Sandra McMahon, has made it clear that Angus Nivison is one of the leading Australian painters. The substantial body of work that McMahon assembled, covering almost two decades and studded with monumental canvasses, presented a cogent picture of Nivison’s practice and its development. Nivison’s great skill with paint and brush was instantly apparent, as was the emotional charge of his creations. While the forms of landscape appear in his paintings, it was the feeling of landscape - that electric intensity of a storm breaking or the softness of mountains seen through mist - that most strongly affected his audiences. This exhibition would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and commitment of Sandra McMahon. Many thanks are also due to Gillean Shaw of Newcastle University Art Gallery and Jane Watters of S.H Ervin gallery, for presenting the show so well in their galleries. Thank you to Susie Burge, Elizabeth Fortescue and John McDonald for allowing us to reproduce their work in this publication. We especially thank all those who lent their works for the exhibition.
