UNIVERSIDAD TECNOLÓGICA NACIONAL (National Technological University) It is a country-wide public national university founded in August 19, 1948 with the name of Universidad Obrera Nacional (UON) (National Workers’ University in English). In 1959, during the government of President Arturo Frondizi, then it became Universidad Tecnologica Nacional. It is the only university in the country that has a federal organization and an academic structure whose main target is the engineering careers. Its administrative headquarter is located in Buenos Aires and it has 30 semi-independent branches of various sizes located all over the country, a High National Institute, an Academic Unity and aulic extensions throughout Argentina.

As well as the other public national universities, the undergraduate careers are free of charge and secular.

The UTN was founded for preparing professionals in the technology eld to accomplish the needs of industry without disregarding cultural and humanistic education. This type of education would make them easier to cope with the industrial management and society creating in them a social spirit a mutual comprehension in the relation between knowledge and work.

The UTN actively participates in the development of Argentina through its link with the productive system.

Institutional Characteristics The UTN has two characteristics that distinguishes itself from the rest of the national university system. It is the only institution whose academic structure is primarily focused on engineering careers.

It is important to highlight that 30.000 professionals from its 15 undergraduate careers have become engineers since the creation of the University- Law 14.855 in 1959. It has a federal character for covering every area of Argentina.

Its 30 Regional Schools are located in the Northeast of the Country: Chaco, Entre Rios,

Santa Fe; in the Northwest of the country: La Rioja, Tucuman; in the Center of the country: Federal Capital and provinces of Buenos Aires and in the south part of Argentina: Chubut, Neuquen, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego.

This shows a permanent and close link a fruitful academic exchange at national level with the regional productive systems.

On the other hand, the university geographic extension makes it capable of attract a large student body – 70.000 students – which is equivalent to more than the 50% of all engineering students of the country.

About Tucumán Tucuman is in the Northwest of Argentina. It is the most important province of the area from a cultural, economic and population point of view. It shares borders with Salta in the north, Santiago del Estero in the east and Catamarca in the south.

San Miguel de Tucuman is the biggest city and capital of Tucuman. It is known as the Jardin de la Republica (Garden of the Republic in English). It is the sixth higher city of Argentina preceded by Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Rosario, La Plata and Mar del Plata.

San Miguel de Tucuman’s growth has made itself surpass its original limits spreading it and forming the Great San Miguel de Tucuman.

According to the 2010 census, it was situated as the 5th city of the country.

Its historical importance is due to the Declaration of Independence proclaimed in it on July 9, 1816.

BRIEF REVIEW OF UTN-FRT (National Technological University – Tucuman Regional Faculty) From its very beginning in the 1950’s, the FRT (Facultad Regional Tucuman, Tucuman Regional Faculty in English) was conceived with the aim of training professionals to cope with the development in the industrial eld of Argentina. It is worth to remember that this institution was connected to one of the most relevant productive service and transportation operating up to the 1990’s, i.e., the railway workshops in Ta Viejo, Tucuman and also connected to the sugar mills.

During 2008, the “Week of Engineering” was inaugurated whose aim is to show researches, artistic productions related to technology, new trends in technology, national and international science and culture, ways of development in productive and industrial areas in Tucuman to students, teachers and public in general.

Nowadays, the UTN has experimented an increase in the student entrance rate. There are 6.000 students attending the undergraduate careers, 3.800 students in the technical careers, 390 students in the postgraduate careers and 4.500 students attending training courses and continuous courses.

From this management, we think that this growing demand of technological studies

requires an important development of strategies to much up to the demands of a globalized world that gives priority to an ever constant training in technological issues.

CIVIL ENGINEERING Degree: Civil Engineer Length of the career: 5 ½ years

Nowadays, the civil engineer solves problems of infrastructure in the areas of production of properties and services in general: buildings, factories, housing, bridges, roads, railway, waterways, ports, airports, hydroelectric use, watering systems, water distribution, alluvial defenses, industrial, rainwater and sewage drainages.

The security, maintenance, operation, modernization, planning, efficiency in the ecological control and replacement of infrastructure is the responsibility of the civil engineer. Each of these features go along with the analysis of technical economic aspects.

ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING Degree: Electronic Engineer Length of the career: 5 ½ years Intermediate Degree: University Technician in Electronics ( nishing the 3rd year)

The electronic engineering is a branch of the engineering that is based on electronics. It deals with solving problems related to control of industrial processes, power electronic systems, instrumentation, control and transformation of electricity to make many electric appliances operate. It also has applications in the industry, telecommunications and design and analysis of electronic instrumentation, microcontrollers and microprocessors.

Electronic Engineering is the practical application of the electronics incorporating not only theory and practice but also knowledge related to semiconductors as well as to many electrical devices. It also incorporates other elds of human knowledge such as drawing and planning techniques.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Degree: Electric Engineer Length of the career: 5 ½ years

The electrical engineer deals with the production of goods and services with high economical and technical efficiency having into account the environmental impact on the activity. There must be engineers with skills to operate state-of-the-art technologies adapted to the local needs, development of suitable processes so that they can be able to compete internationally, investigate and develop new technologies. This is done strengthening them with postgraduate training.

This career responds to the needs of training competent professionals so that they can perform technical and management functions in the area of generation, transmission, distribution and use of electrical power.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING Degree: Information Systems Engineer Length of the career: 5 years Intermediate Degree: University Systems Analyst ( nishing the 3rd year)

The systems engineer is a professional with a very strong analytical training which allows him to interpret and solve problems through the use of methodologies of systems and technologies of information processing.

Because of his training, this engineer is especially suitable for integrating the information that comes from different disciplinary elds concurrent to a common project.

The acquired capacity let him strongly face the planning, development, direction and control of information systems.

This engineer has knowledge to administrate human resources that intervene in the development of information systems.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Degree: Mechanical Engineer Length of the career: 5 years

The mechanical engineer is trained in doing and producing goods and/or services. Argentina needs to restore and rebuild almost all its basic infrastructure which shows signs of obsolescence.

This engineer is also capable of improving and increasing the country’s industrial structure on modern technical and economical efficient bases.

This overview implies having engineers with a very high training level that can investigate and develop new technologies and also operate current technology to adapt them to the regional needs. The development of processes and machinery for an international competition is also a duty.

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IN EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY Length of the career: 2 years

Target audience The target audience of this career are tertiary and teachers of the UTN who want to have a university degree.

Graduate pro le These professionals have to design, supervise and coordinate educational curriculum programs which integrate the TICs. They have to advise the educational intuitions to use and production of resources. They have to develop different strategies of pedagogic view at the university. They have to do research tasks in the educational technological eld and participate in interdisciplinary teams. They have to elaborate educational material of different disciplines with the help of leading-edge technological innovations.

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IN HYGIENE AND SECURITY AT WORK Length of the career: 2 years

This career deals with the evaluation, analysis and implementation of systems that plans, organize and control the risks produced in the work processes which can affect the health, security and environment el the workplace.

Its aim is to train professionals who are prepared to play the role of Chief of the hygiene and security area of a company following the current legislation of work hazards proposing and solving problems.

UTN-FRT INVESTIGATION GROUPS

Nowadays, there are

28 PROJECTS of investigation and development (PID, Proyectos de Investigacion y Desarrollo in Spanish). There are

164 RESEARCHERS working in these projects.

CEDIA (Centro de Ingeniería Ambiental) CEDIA is a Center for Investigation and Development of Technologies to the relief and solution of environment problems which affects not only the natural resources but also the life quality of the urban and rural inhabitants of the area.

Its members are still developing projects related to: • the evaluation of environment impacts, • studies of the contamination of natural resources, that is, water, soil and air, due to industrial effluents, • the transformation and exploitation of the industrial effluents, • the development of different solutions for the treatment of contaminated water with arsenic, • the studies about electromagnetic contamination, • the application of renewable energies, • the behavior of society interacting with the environment.

The member of their center also take part in activities such as divulgation of their researches, advisory services in their corresponding specialties and the diffusion of issues related to programs about environmental awareness.

CIASUR Because the lower atmosphere affects the radio signals, the Research Center of the Lower Atmosphere and Radioatmosphere (Centro de Investigacion de Atmosfera Superior y Radiopropagacion, CIASUR in Spanish) has the aim of increasing the scienti c research of the lower atmosphere in order to contribute to the study of it. This is essential for the systems that use radio

signals such as HF communications, satellite positioning and so on. The results of the studies are of great interest for international institutions which want models of a general description of our atmospheric region as being part of the earth environment to evaluate the effects over vehicles and space experiments and radiopropagation studies and its applications.

GITIA The Research Group in Advanced Computing Technologies (GITIA Grupo de Invetigacion en Tecnologias Informaticas Avanzadas in Spanish) focuses in the development of arti cial intelligence based innovative technology of high impact on the socio-productive environment. The ubiquity of the information systems in modern life needs new paradigms for the design and implementation of the computing systems. They must be able to provide solutions in highly dynamic and distributed environments. GITIA, in this context, collaborates with international and national industries and scienti c centers.

INSTITUTIONAL ENTAILMENT AND TECHNOLOCICAL TRANSFER One of the strategic policies implemented by the UTN - FRT is the institutional entailment and the technological transfer in order to articulate the scienti c-technological knowledge with the service demands of the socio-productive sector and public organisms in the engineering eld.

The UTN - FRT created a Secretary which coordinates Computing Projects, Electronic Projects, Civil Projects, Mechanical Projects and Electrical Projects giving integrated solutions or speci c developments.

Recalcatti CULTURAL CENTER Engineer Juan Carlos Recalcatti Cultural Center This Center was opened on April 9, 2016. It has an amphitheater for 200 people, a pictorial room which can exhibits paintings as well as sculptures. Many notable national and international artists exhibited there such as, Litto Nebbia, Tony Levin, Don Vilanova, Raquel van Gelderen, Pablo Ivan Rios and Sergio Real.

Semana de la IngenierĂ­a (Engineering Celebration Week)

The Engineering Week began in 2008 in order to show the academic and research works done at the university. Then, cultural activities were incorporated to strengthen the personal development of technological students. When we refer to personal development, we remark on the origins of the Universidad Obrera Nacional (National Workers University) which was born with the aim of not only training students to be professionals but also to have a cultural training.

In the course of these annual events, the interests in scienti c progress and technological advances paved the way to have important national lecturers in the third edition of the event.

There were also cultural activities such as lectures about education and technology, concerts performed by provincial and national artists, exhibitions of visual art.

COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE The UTN - FRT Digital Newspaper called El Tecnologico ( The Technological Man in English) is a communicative and spreading tool of various academic, scienti c and cultural activities of the university. Its target is the community of th UTN – FRT and audience in general. It also deals with news of the latest advances of technology and national, international, public and private universities. It has a link to Radio Nacional Argentina (Argentine National Radio).

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES An intense cultural activity has been taken place for 8 years such as different aesthetic and artistic exhibitions, argentine popular and Latin music, jazz shows, cinema clubs and so on.

UTN-TV The TV program of the UTN–FRT The program has been on air for 10 seasons. It is on Channel 8, Telefe Group. The content of each program is related to institutional issues and it communicates the activities made by teachers, researchers, graduates and students.
